Update: PageRank Status extension for Google Chrome v3.0

I just updated PageRank Status extension for Google Chrome to version 3.0, it's compatible Chrome stable 4.0 and Chrome dev/beta 5.0 now. I have uploaded it to official Google Chrome Extensions Center, you can direct install this extension from here.

PageRank Status is a Chrome SEO extension for webmaster. With this extension, you can view the Google PageRank and Alexa Rank of the current web page, quick access to Whois, Alexa, backlinks and indexed pages in a popup window.

How to install PageRanks Status Extension

Make sure your Chrome version >= 4.0 or dev 5.0
Visit PageRanks Status Extension
Click Install button
A Confirm Installation dialog shows, click Install button.

Note: If you want view the Google PageRank in toolbar icon like above screenshot, you must install Chrome dev/beta version. The current stable version of Chrome doesn't support for this feature, you must click the toolbar icon and then view the PageRank in the popup window.

Google Chrome: New Security Features

Google has announced a number of security enhancements that "make it easier for developers to build secure web sites", writes Adam Barth, one of the software engineers working on the project. Some security features have already been implemented in other browsers, including Firefox and IE and in significant add-ons like NoScript.

Chrome Security: Strict-Transport-Security

Strict-Transport-Security lets a high-security web site tell the browser that it wants to be contacted over a secure connection only. That means the browser will always use HTTPS to connect to the site and will treat all HTTPS errors as hard stops (instead of prompting the user to "click through" certificate errors).

Chrome Security: Cross-Origin Communication with postMessage

postMessage API provides a richer interaction and more secure communication between frames, and enables the creation of more secure versions of existing gadgets.

Chrome Security: CSRF Protection via Origin Header

The Origin header is a new HTML5 feature that helps you defend your site against cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks. In a CSRF attack, a malicious web site, say attacker.com, instructs the user's browser to send an HTTP request to a target server, say example.com, that confuses the example.com server into performing some action.

Chrome Security: ClickJacking Protection with X-Frame-Options

First introduced in Internet Explorer 8, X-Frame-Options is a security feature that lets web sites defend themselves against clickjacking attacks. To defend against clickjacking, a web developer can request that a web page not be loaded inside a frame by including the X-Frame-Options: deny HTTP header. X-Frame-Options is implemented in Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, and Safari 4.

Chrome Security: Reflective XSS Protection

This feature protects against a type of cross-site scripting (XSS) attack. IE8 introduced an XSS filter which checks if a script that is about to be run is also present in the HTTP request for the page, which is a strong clue that it is an XSS attack. The XSS filter is similar to those found in Internet Explorer 8 and NoScript. Google is implementing their support in the WebKit rendering engine which has some technical advantages and also allows other WebKit-based browsers, such as Apple's, to get the same benefits.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language used to enable programmatic access to objects within both the client application and other applications. It is primarily used in the form of client-side JavaScript, implemented as an integrated component of the web browser, allowing the development of enhanced user interfaces and dynamic websites. Google Chrome uses V8 JavaScript Engine (an open source JavaScript engine developed by Google in Denmark).

How to enable/disable JavaScript in Google Chrome?

However, JavaScript and the DOM provide the potential for malicious authors to deliver scripts to run on a client computer via the web. Some users want to disable JavaScript for security reason. In the old versions of Google Chrome, there is no way to disable/enable JavaScript in Google Chrome as you can do with other browsers by changing a simple setting in its Options dialog. We must add -disable-javascript parameter to Google Chrome shortcut by manual.

With the latest 4.1 Beta update, Chrome has been implemented more controls for JavaScript, plug-ins, cookies, etc. Now, you can directly enable/disable JavaScript in the Chrome Options dialog. To change this option, please follow the steps below:

Click menu Tools -> Options.
Click Under the Hood tab, then click Content settings button.
Click JavaScript tab, there are three options:

All all sites to run JavaScript (recommended) - Enable JavaScript in Chrome.
Do not allow any site to run JavaScript - Disable JavaScript in Chrome.
Exceptions - add JavaScript a white list or black list.

Click Close button

Note: JavaScript is commonly used by web developers to make their sites more interactive. If you choose to disable JavaScript, you may find that some sites don't work properly.

Google Chrome Downloads Extension

If you want to access Chrome Downloads Manager window, normally, there are three ways:

1. Cick the menu "Tools -> Downloads"

2. Press key "Ctrl + J"

3. Type chrome://downloads/ in the address bar

However, pressing Ctrl+J is just so hard, clicking menu or typing commands takes a "long time", so I developed a simple Chrome Downloads Extension for lazy man: visit Downloads Manager directly by one click from the toolbar. :-)

Install Chrome Downloads Extension

I have uploaded this extension to Google Extensions Center, to install Downloads Extension in your Chrome browser, just follow the steps below:

Click Install button
A Confirm Installation dialog shows, click Install button.

What is cookie?

A cookie (also tracking cookie, browser cookie, and, HTTP cookie) is a small piece of text stored on a user's computer by a web browser. A cookie consists of one or more name-value pairs containing bits of information. A cookie can be used for authentication, session tracking (state maintenance), storing site preferences, shopping cart contents, the identifier for a server-based session, or anything else that can be accomplished through storing textual data.

A tracking cookie may potentially infringe upon the user's privacy but they can be easily removed. Most modern browsers allow users to decide whether to accept cookies, and the time frame to keep them, but rejecting cookies makes some websites unusable. To protect your privacy security and manage your cookies data in Google Chrome, please do following steps.

How to manage cookies in Google Chrome

Launch Google Chrome, click the Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Under the Hood tab, then click Content settings button.
Click Cookies tab, as it is shown in below screenshot:

Select one of the following:

Allow local data to be set - This option is selected by default. It lets first-party and third-party websites set and receive cookies on webpages you visit.
Ask me when a site tries to set data
Block sites form setting any data - Prevent all first-party and third-party cookies from being set. This will prevent most sites that require you to sign in from working.

To view or delete a cookie data, click Show Cookie and other site data button

How to adjust spell-checker settings in Google Chrome

In computing, a spell checker (or spell check) is an application program that flags words in a document that may not be spelled correctly. Spell checkers may be stand-alone capable of operating on a block of text, or as part of a larger application, such as a word processor, email client, electronic dictionary, or search engine.

Google Chrome has a built-in spell-checker to automatically check what you're typing into web forms and text fields. This feature is enabled by default. To adjust Spell checker settings, please do following steps:

Click the Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Under the Hood tab, then click Change font and language settings button.
Click the Languages tab.

Select the "Check spelling" checkbox if you want Google Chrome to automatically check your spelling.
Select the language you want to use in the "Spell-checker language" drop-down menu. The default Spell-checker language is English.

Add a new word to the dictionary

You can right click the word in the text field, then select Add to dictionary.

Note: The current version of Chrome doesn't support for removing a word from the dictionary.

The high-CPU-usage problem is still happening for some users in Chrome Dev 5.x or Chrome 4.x. There are many discussions about this problem in internet forums or newsgroups (You can search "Google Chrome + CPU usage" in Google).

To solve this problem, you can try clearing your browsing data.

Solve high-CPU-usage problem in Chrome: clear browsing data

To clear browsing data in Google Chrome, please do following steps:

Windows and Linux instructions

Click the Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Personal Stuff tab (If you are using Chrome Dev version, click the Under the Hood tab).
Click Clear browsing data.
Select the check boxes for the types of information you wish to remove.
Use the "Clear data from this period" menu to select the amount of data you want to delete.
Click Clear Browsing Data.

Mac instructions

Select Chrome > Clear Browsing Data on the menu bar.
Select the checkboxes for the types of information you wish to remove.
Use the "Clear data from this period" menu to select the amount of data you want to delete.
Click Clear Browsing Data.

How to add Google Buzz to my Google Apps account?

Google Launched Google Buzz some days ago. Unfortunately, it isn't added to Google Apps account. There's no definite word as to when, just "within a few months". :-(

Google enterprise blog said:

Within a few months, we also plan to make Google Buzz available to businesses and schools using Google Apps, with added features for sharing within your organization.

There is a discussion in Google help forum:

Answer: can I use buzz from my margaret@heavybubble.com mail? (which has business gmail service set up)

A reply from Google Employee:

Hi all,

Just letting you know that I've passed all of your feedback on to our product team.

Unfortunately, turning on a new feature like this for an Apps account is a little different from turning it on for a Gmail account.

When enabling this in Apps, we need to provide other administrative controls, like allowing it to be turned on/off at the domain level, security restrictions (who you can and can't buzz to) and the like.

This will definitely be available some time soon, and we appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Chrome OS Tablet UI Design Exploration

While its primary focus is netbooks, Chrome OS could eventually scale to a wide variety of devices. Google’s Chromium.org site contains visual explorations of how a Chrome OS tablet UI might look in hardware.

On tablets, the UI would be adjusted to handle larger touch targets. Initial explorations have maintained the same basic chrome layout, but enlarged the controls. Icons could be placed above tabs to provide larger, square targets. Panels would be placed along the bottom edge and could be opened with upward dragging motions.

Google to stop supporting old browser - Internet Explorer 6.0

Google has announced it will begin phasing out support for Microsoft’s nearly decade-old Internet Explorer 6 web browser. Beginning March 1, IE6 users will start to find Google’s Web based applications and services - starting with Google Docs and Google Sites - will stop working well with Internet Explore 6. I am a user of Google Apps, I received a notification email from Google Apps team 2 days ago:

Dear Google Apps admin,

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience. We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

What are Chrome extensions?

Extensions let you customize Google Chrome with features you like, while keeping your browser free of clutter that you don't use. This feature added in Google Chrome 4.0 stable version, it's a great way to add more features and functionality to the browser.

Extensions Requirements:

Windows: Google Chrome 4.0 stable version

Linux: Google Chrome beta version

How to get/install Chrome Extensions?

Visit Google official extensions gallery by visiting https://chrome.google.com/extensions.
Browse or search the gallery for extensions. Once you find an extension you want to install, click its link to go to its home page.
On the home page, you can see quick statistics and user comments about the extension. Click Install to download the extension.
A dialog will inform you about the data and functionality that the extension will be able to access. Click Install to continue.

You can also download the extensions from other third sites (Ex: Download Extensions from ChromeFans.org). If you download an extension from outside the Google gallery, you'll be asked to confirm the download in the Downloads bar.

How to disable extensions

If you'd like to temporarily turn off an extension, disable it on the Extensions page. Click the Tools menu, select Extensions, then click Disable for the extension you'd like to temporarily remove.

How to uninstall extensions

Click the Tools menu, select Extensions, then click Disable for the extension you'd like to completely remove.

Tips: To visit the extensions page, you can also type chrome://extensions/ in the address ba.

Google Chrome 4.0 released: extensions and bookmark sync

Google has released 4.0 version of its web browser "Google Chrome", it adds two of the most sought-after features: extensions and bookmark sync.

Chrome extensions have been available in the beta release for about a month now, but now you can get them in the stable version. There are over 1,500 extensions in Chrome extensions gallery and you can install them on the stable version of Google Chrome.

Here is what the Official Google Blog says:

Extensions let you add new features and functions to your browser. Some provide one-click access to some of your favorite web applications like eBay and digg, or news and information sources such as NPR and Time.com. Others are useful tweaks for performing common online tasks such as browsing photos, getting directions or shopping.

Bookmark sync is a handy feature for those of you who use several computers — say, a laptop at work and a desktop at home. You can enable bookmark sync to synchronize your bookmarks on all of your computers so that when you create a bookmark on one computer, it's automatically added across all your computers. This means that you won't need to manually recreate the bookmark each time you switch computers.

How to manager your Chrome Extensions?

To manager your Chrome Extension, just type "chrome://extensions/" in the address bar (or click the Tools -> Extensions menu), as it is shown in below screenshot:

Some extensions may have additional settings that you can edit. Click the Options button (if active) for the extension to see these settings. If you want uninstall a extension from Chrome, just click "Uninstall" link.

How to enable bookmark sync

CLick the menu Tools -> Synchronize my bookmarks, then sign in to your Google Account in the dialog that appears. If you've already enabled the sync feature on another computer, you'll see a prompt asking you to confirm that your different sets of bookmarks should be merged together. Click Merge and sync to finish the syncing process.

Google Chrome extension: everymark - everything search on bookmarks

Ofer Affias sent me a Google Chrome extension named everymark that developed by him. when clicking the icon, a nice popup will appear, populated with a list of all your bookmarks and their links, whenever you start typing search terms the list will shrink to contain only the relevant bookmarks.

This extension allows to instantly bookmark every page which interests you (no need to find which folder suites best, just bookmark it), while retrieving the page afterwards becomes a breeze - just search the keywords, and open it.

How to get the Chromium OS/Chrome OS source code

Google released Chromium OS open source project. The code of Chromium OS is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions. In this tutorial we will see how to download the source code for the Chromium OS project.

Note: If you just want to see the code, you can browse or search the source code repository.

Method 1: Download Chromium OS Source Code directly (cannot commit changes)

Please download the tar.gz file and unpack it into a local directory called chromiumos:

File size: 232 MB

Method 2: Using Git to get the source

Get the chromium depot tools. Make sure they are earlier in your path than any other gcl binaries on your system.
Install git onto your local machine:

sudo apt-get install git-core

Get a copy of the Chromium OS repository.

mkdir [chromiumos]
cd [chromiumos]
gclient config http://src.chromium.org/git/chromiumos.git
gclient sync

Note: This process may appear to hang while downloading the kernel source. It may take anywhere up to 10-20 minutes before you get more feedback.

Directory structure of Chromium OS source code

The following document details the source tree hierarchy you are likely to encounter while developing for Chromium OS:

repo

This directory contains the build dev packages that are listed in the repo_list_dev.

src

The main src directory. All files that are built and end up in the final Chromium OS image are located here.

build

This directory is created when you build from inside the chroot environment.

images

Has built images from our build_image.sh script in folders by corresponding build numbers

The x86 directory (and others, once we support different architectures) has the local_packages that are created from all the individual make_pkg.sh's within platforms and third_party

common

Contains includes and libraries for logging and flags.

package_repo

Contains text files that list the packages used in building a Chromium OS image.

platform

Contains all Chromium OS packages that are created completely for Chromium OS.

scripts

Contains the many necessary scripts to help you build a Chromium OS system.

tests

Google has opened up its gallery for developers to share Chrome extensions, a step that soon should make it easier for people to customize the open-source browser. If you are a developer, you can upload your extension here. If you are looking to find and install extensions, please check back here soon.

The Google programmer and "gallery master" Lei Zheng shared details in a blog post - Extensions: One Step Closer to the Finish Line. You can find all the info to write an extension in Chrome Extensions Developer Documentation. Once your extension is ready for the gallery, you'll need to upload a zip file of your code and an icon that helps users distinguish your extension. You'll also have the option to submit text, screenshots and/or YouTube videos that describe the functionality of your extension. All types of extensions are welcome in the gallery, provided they comply with Google Chrome Gallery Developer Agreement.

The XML Tree extension for Google Chrome has been updated to version 1.20.

What is XML Tree extension for Google Chrome?

It's a simple extension to view XML files in a user friendly format with opening and closing nodes.

XML Tree extension v1.2 updates include:

1. Display xpath in tool tip (onhover) and text box (onclick) for a specific element.

2. Allow file:// protocol in manifest.json so local files will also get rendered.

3. Display element/attribute namespace declarations in opening element tag.

4. Updated inline xslt to be a truly well-formed/valid stylesheet.

The open source version of Google Chrome OS was released on last week. If you don't want to wait until next year to see what's going on with Chrome OS, then follow this guide to get the Chrome OS and install it on your computer.

After Google announced the availability of the Chrome OS / Chromium OS source code, a GDGT engineer - Jon Ursenbach, immediately got to work on compiling the code and then got an instance of Chromium OS running in a virtual machine.

Now, you can download a copy of the virtual machine here (300MB compressed / 700MB uncompressed) at http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/.

You'll need VMware Player (or VMware Fusion for Macs) to get it running. VirtualBox (a free cross-platform virtual machine created by Sun Microsystem) can also use VMware VMDK images, but it isn't always perfect.

Some helpful tips about installing Chrome OS

To use the vmdk file, open VMware and create a new virtual machine. One of the options will be to use an "existing virtual disk." (In VMware Fusion, this is the last option below, "use operating system disk" and "use OS disc image file.")
Make sure your VMware is set to use bridged networking, rather than NAT.
You need a Google account to login to Chrome OS / Chromium OS.
If you don't have VMware, you can use VirtualBox (supports for Windows / Mac / Linux).

I created a bookmarket to download YouTube Videos in Google Chrome on Oct 05, 2008. However, many readers leave comments to tell me that the bookmarklet can't work fine since last month.

I just checked the YouTube site and noticed that YouTube modified the video parameters. If the old bookmarklet can't work on your Chrome, please use this:

Google released Chromium OS open source project on Nov 19, 2009. The code of Chromium OS is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions, it's a lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. According to Google, Chrome OS, will be about web apps, not desktop apps - in other words, the entire user experience will take place within the browser.

Chrome OS Web applications with the functionality of desktop applications

1. Enhanced functionality through HTML 5: offline modes, background processing, notifications, and more.

2. Better access points and discovery: On Chromium-based browsers, Google have addressed the access point issue by allowing applications to install shortcuts on your desktop.

3. Tab bar: While the tab bar is sufficient to access existing tabs, it's creating a new primary access point that provides a list of frequently used applications and tools.

Google has officially announced that they need developers, partners and the open source community to get this operating system ready for use by next year. Yesterday Google released Chromium OS open source project. The code of Chromium OS is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions. The Chromium OS project includes Google code base, user interface experiments and some initial designs for ongoing development.

Here is what Google says:

First, it's all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.

Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn't trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer.

Chrome OS is basically built around a web browser just like Google Chrome. It means if you see Chrome OS, you would see everything inside Google Chrome Browser. You can check out more from the below video.

So what do we really have? Sounds like some kind of a modified browser that will run web application.

Regarding to Google, "Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier". Unfortunately, Google Chrome is using a client_id variable which is unique for every Chrome user, and which can be used to create exact user profiles of a user's actions while using Google Chrome. More information about Chrome unique ID, there is an article from Google official document: General privacy: Privacy, unique IDs, and RLZ.

To protect your privacy and remove the unique ID of Google Chrome from your computer, there is a FREE tool that developed by AQLSoft.com - Chrome Privacy Protector, it automatically deletes the unique Client ID before each run of Google Chrome.

Guidelines: Remove the unique ID of Google Chrome from your computer

Download Chrome Privacy Protector from AQLSoft, and then install it.
Close all Google Chrome windows that it is currently launched.
Launch Chrome Privacy Protector, and then click the "Remove unique ID now" button to anonymize your Google Chrome.

Google has announced more cool artist themes for Chrome on October 5, 2009. Google invited leading artists, architects, musicians, illustrators, filmmakers and fashion and interior designers from across the globe to create artwork. Google just posted a video to YouTube to promote its new theme library for the Google Chrome browser, you can view the video at Google Chrome Themes YouTube Channel. The themes, which are designed to give your browser’s skin a splash of color and personality, were developed by famous artists and designers.

The video in the link shows some of them off, but be sure to watch until the end, when the browser skin literally explodes out of the video frame and takes over the page. Once the video is over, there’s more cool page-skinning trickery to be had — the video player window turns into a theme browser you can click through, altering the design of the YouTube page itself.

So this is clearly not the real beta it just seems like that because they put it on google sites.

How to install Google Chrome for Linux and Mac

Google Chrome is only released for Windows platform(Windows XP/Vista/7). For other platforms it is still in development stage. There is a development build available at Chrome Dev Channel.

Install Google Chrome on Mac

Requirements: Intel CPU; Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later.
Download: GoogleChrome.dmg

Install Google Chrome on Linux

Requirements: Intel Pentium 4 / Athlon 64 or later CPU; 32- or 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 or later, or 32-bit Debian 5. Support for other Linux distributions is planned; unpacking the .deb files by hand may work.

Note: Installing Google Chrome will add the Google repository so your system will automatically keep Chrome up to date. If you don't want Google's repository, do "sudo touch /etc/default/google-chrome" before installing the package.

For 32-bit systems: google-chrome-unstable_current_i386.deb
For 64-bit systems: google-chrome-unstable_current_amd64.deb

Remember, Dev channel browsers may still crash frequently. See bug-reporting-guidlines-for-the-mac-linux-builds before reporting problems in Mac or Linux Dev channel builds.

The Adobe Flash Player is software for viewing animations and movies using computer programs such as a web browser; in common usage, Flash lets you put animation and movies on a web site. Flash player is a widely distributed proprietary multimedia and application player created by Macromedia and now developed and distributed by Adobe after its acquisition. Flash Player runs SWF files that can be created by the Adobe Flash authoring tool, by Adobe Flex or by a number of other Macromedia and third party tools.

Why you need to uninstall Flash player?

Sometimes the application loses it's functionality due to various reasons, we need uninstall and then re-install the newest version.
Some peoples don't like the Flash video elements on there browser(Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc..), they want a clean browser, NO FLASH.

Uninstall Flash Player from Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer

You can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller. To remove Flash Player, simply download and run the appropriate uninstaller for your system using the steps below:

Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller, save to your local folder:

For Windows: uninstall_flash_player.exe
For Mac OS X, version 10.4 and above: uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg
For Mac OS X, version 10.3 and below: uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.2.dmg
For Mac OS 8.x, 9.x: uninstall_flash_player.hqx

Quit ALL running applications, including all Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or other browser windows, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, or other Messengers.
Run the uninstaller. This will remove Adobe Flash Player from all browsers on the system

In Google Chrome, the Omnibox feature combines a browser’s address bar and search box into one single area at the top of the browser window. You can also use it to bookmark websites and see security information about your current webpage. Here are all the ways you can use the address bar:

1. Go to web address

Type the URL of the web page (e.g. http://www.chromefans.org), then press Enter key or click the Go to ... icon button at the end of the bar.

2. Search the web

Enter a search term there, and you'll generate a search that hits your default search engine:

3. Create a bookmark

If you come across an interesting webpage that you'd like to revisit at a later point, click the star icon to create a bookmark.

Edit the bookmark's name in the Name field.
By default, the bookmark is filed in the bookmark folder that was most recently used. Use the Folder drop-down menu to choose where you want to store the bookmark.
Undo the addition of the bookmark by clicking Remove.
If you want to change the bookmark's URL, click Edit. Other, click Close to add the bookmark.

4. Search your bookmarks and browsing history

Whenever you type in the address bar, Google Chrome automatically searches your browsing history and shows you websites in your history that match what you've entered. The address bar can also automatically show you suggestions of related search terms and websites.

Google Chome 3 released: Gets themes, improved Omnibox & better new tab page

Just after the first year of Google Chrome, Google has released Chrome 3.0 on 9/15/2009 (Version number: 3.0.195.21). According to Google, Chrome's JavaScript performance has improved 150% since the release of the first beta and by more than 25% since the last stable release. The new stable version will also feature Chrome's new Safari-like New Tab page, an improved Omnibox and better HTML5 capabilities, as well as support for Chrome themes.

There is still no official release for Mac or Linux. Both of those builds are coming along nicely, but it appears we’ll now have to wait for Chrome 4 before we see these versions.

Google lists HP, Acer, Asus and Lenove among Chrome OS partners

Google Chrome OS is a project by Google Inc. announced on July 7, 2009. It's based on Google's Chrome web browser and the Linux kernel. It will initially be targeted at Netbooks, and is set to be released during the second half of 2010.

One day after the official announcement of Chrome OS, Google announced several partners, who would be developing devices with Chrome OS or supply components. The list displays a vast regional spread among PC vendors, from the world's largest PC maker, HP (Hewlett-Packard), Lenovo (China's biggest PC vendor), and two of Taiwan's top vendors, Acer and Asus (Noticeably absent was Dell).

Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Freescale, all makers of ARM-chips, were also named, as was Adobe, supposedly for support of Flash, without which a net-aware device would be of limited use. According to Google, this was merely a preliminary list, and many more cooperations are being discussed at the moment. Noticeably absent from this list were Intel and Dell.

How to enable or disable JavaScript in Google Chrome?

Updated on Mar 10, 2010: The Chrome 4.x has been added an option to enable/disable JavaScript in Options dialog. So we needn't change the Chrome shortcut parameter by manual. I re-wrote a new tutorial about enable/disable JavaScript in Chrome, please click here to view it.

Some people want to disable JavaScript for security reason. Unfortunately, There is no way to disable/enable JavaScript in Google Chrome as you can do with other browsers by changing a simple setting in its Options dialog. We must add -disable-javascript parameter to Google Chrome shortcut by manual. In this tutorial we will see how to turn JavaScript on/off with following 4 steps:

1. Right click the Google Chrome icon in your desktop, then click Properties.

2. Click Shortcut tab.

3. Add -disable-javascript parameter in the Target field.

4. Click the OK button.

How to manage my downloads in Google Chrome?

Download a file in Google Chrome

When you download a file from a website in Google Chrome, a downloads bar appears at the bottom of the tab where you can monitor the progress of your downloading file. If you're downloading an executable file (such as files with .exe, .dll, or .bat extensions), first accept the download by clicking Save on the downloads bar. This step helps prevent malicious software from automatically downloading to your computer.

To view your downloads history, click Tools menu, then select Downloads, open the Download page (you can also press the hotkey Ctrl + J or type chrome://downloads/ in the address bar), as it is shown in the screenshot:

Pause a download

Open the Download page, click the Pause link for the download.

Cancel a download

Open the Download page, select the downloaded file, then click Cancel.

Clear download history

Open the Download page, click the Clear all link.

Change the default download location for Google Chrome

By default, Google Chrome sets your download location to /Documents and Settings//My Documents/Downloads. To set a specific location, please follow these steps:

Click Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Minor Tweaks tab (or Under the Hood if you're using Google Chrome Beta).
Click the Browse button in the Downloads section and choose a download location.
If you'd rather choose a specific location for each download, please check the Ask where to save each file before downloading option.
Click the Close button.

Automatically open downloaded files

If you want files that have the same file type as the one you're downloading to always open after they're done downloading, click the menu arrow next to the file button in the downloads bar, then select Always open files of this type, as it is shown in the screenshot below:

To prevent potentially malicious files from automatically downloading to your computer, this option isn't available for executable file types, such as those with .exe, .dll, or .bat extensions.

The Chromium (Chrome developer version) extension system is in active development. It is not yet ready for use by the general public. To launch extensions for Chrome, you should install a Chrome developer or beta version, and then add --enable-extensions to your Chrome command line

How to uninstall an extension?

To uninstall an extension, please do following steps:

Navigate to chrome://extensions.
Find the extension you want to uninstall.
Press the Uninstall button, as it is shown in the figure.

Google released the design documents of Chrome theme since Chrome 3.0 beta, according the new specification, themes are packaged as extensions (click to see the extensions documentation for how to create and sign a CRX file). With the old way, the the developers must modify the default.dll file manually, it's very inconvenient.

I just re-built all Chrome themes that developed on September 2008 with new specification, all themes compatible Chrome 3.0 beta now. To install these themes is very easy, just download as a .crx file to your computer, the theme will be applied immediately (require Google Chrome 3.0+).

Google Chrome official themes gallery

Google just released Chrome Themes Gallery, there are 29 official themes currently. Themes require Google Chrome 3.0+, if you want to apply these themes, please download and install Google Chrome 3.0 (BETA) first.

To apply the themes in Chrome is very easy, there are all in .CRX format, just click the Apply Theme button, it will automatically install.

Steps to add a theme

Click the Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Personal Stuff tab, then click Get themes in the Themes section to see the gallery. You can also go to the gallery directly by visiting http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/themes/.
Preview the different themes in the gallery by clicking their links or thumbnails. When you find a theme that you'd like to use, click the Apply theme button on the main gallery page.
The theme is downloaded as a .crx file to your computer. Confirm your download by clicking Save for the file in the Downloads bar.
The theme will be applied immediately. If you change your mind, just click Back to default in the message that appears at the top of page to go back to the classic Google Chrome theme

Steps to remove a theme

To go back to the classic Google Chrome look and feel, just apply the Classic theme from the Themes Gallery. Alternatively, you can go to the Options menu to reset your theme:

Click the Tools menu, then select Options.
Click the Personal Stuff tab, in the Themes section, click Reset to default theme.

You'll see the classic blue theme again.

Ivan posted an article [HowTo] Install Chromium (Open Source Google Chrome) On Ubuntu in ivankristianto.com, this tutorial will show you how to install Chromium (Open Source Google Chrome) with 6 steps on Ubuntu:

1. Edit you repository list, open /etc/apt/sources.list file with this command:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. Add this to the end of the file, after that safe and exit:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

3. Now add the GPG key, use this command:

sudo apt-key adv <code>--code>recv-keys <code>--code>keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xfbef0d696de1c72ba5a835fe5a9bf3bb4e5e17b5

4. Update the source list with this command:

sudo apt-get upgrade

5. Install Chromium, with this command:

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

6. That’s it! To use Chromium go to Applications > Internet > Chromium Web Browser

What's Google Chrome portable? It has all features available in the main Chrome browser but requires no installation - just unzip the files in a folder and launch it, you can carry it on a USB driver or if you are behind a corporate firewall and can’t install it via internet.

Jaxov found a way for installing Adobe Flash Player into your portable Google Chrome, please follow these steps:

2. Download plugins.zip.

3. Extract plugins.zip in the same directory in which Portable-Google-Chrome.exe is placed

What is incognito mode (private browsing)?

If your Google Chrome is in incognito mode, pages and files you view in the incognito window won't appear in your browser history, download history or search history, all new cookies are deleted after your close the incognito window.

Regardless of this potential failing, users should remember that any files downloaded to local folder will still remain on your computer.

Moreover, remember that ISPs can and do store information about your surfing habits, which could make that ‘incognito’ surfing session on Google Chrome a little less incognito than you might think.

How to turn incognito mode

To turn on incognito mode, you can press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shirt+N, you can also follow these steps:

Click the Tools menu.
Select New incognito window.

A new window will open with the incognito icon .

Google Chrome contains many new features that can be harnessed by developers and webmaster to deliver a better end-user experience. The JavaScript virtual machine used by Google Chrome also, the V8 JavaScript engine, has features such as dynamic code generation, hidden class transitions and precise garbage collection. This means that you can create more complex and more intensive AJAX applications with fewer speed and processing constraints with V8 engine.

Test your website in Google Chrome

If you are a web developer or webmaster, there are several useful tools to help you test your website in Google Chrome:

JavaScript Debugger

Click the Page icon, and then select Developer > Debug JavaScript to open the JavaScript Debugger window. You can also press the hotkey Ctrl+Shift+L. Type help for a list of commands. There is an article Sample debug session with Google Chrome JavaScript debuger from alexatnet.com.

JavaScript console

JavaScript console is a component of Google Chrome web inspector that analyzes the JavaScript code and any script errors associated with a specific webpage element. To launch JavaScript console window, click Page icon, and then select Developer > JavaScript console (or press Ctrl+Shift+J).

Web Inspector

Right-click on any component on a web page and then select Inspect element to launch the web inspector. You'll be able to see the elements and resources associated with the component on which you clicked, including a hierarchy view of the DOM and a JavaScript console.

Task Manager

Use the Task Manager to get details (memory, CPU, and network) about all running Google Chrome processes, or to force a misbehaving tab or application to close. To open the task manager, click the Page menu icon, then select Developer > Task Manager (or press Shift+Esc).

New way to package Google Chrome extension

Google Chrome Dev version was updated to 3.0.193.0, there have been some breaking changes in the way Google Chrome installs an extension since version 3.0.189.0, this is a very important update, Chromium Team has been changed the way to package extension.

Extensions are packaged as signed zip files with the file extension "crx" (eg myextension.crx). With the old way, you must install Python 2.6+ on your computer and then download chromium_extension.py to package the extension. The new way needn't Python 2.6+ and chromium_extension.py, just do following steps:

1. Close all your Chrome windows.

2. Open a command line.

3. Type: /chrome.exe --pack-extension=

If you've developed an extension, you can learn how to repackage your extensions for Chrome v 3.0.189.0 in the packaging doc on Chromium developer site. Note that your extension ID will now be your public key, so you'll have to change any code that uses that.

If you're using an extension someone else has developed, you will have to reinstall it once the developer has repackaged it (as described above). We've already updated our sample extensions.

PageRank Status was updated to 2.0

I just updated PageRank Status to version 2.0, it's compatible with dev version 3.0.189.0 and 3.0.193.0 now.

Google has finally confirmed that it will be releasing an operating system - Google Chrome OS. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Sundar Pichai posted an article at Official Google Blog to talk about Google Chrome OS:

We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Intel Is Working With Google on Chrome OS

"We work with Google on a variety of projects, including elements of this one. We've been privy to the project for some time," said Nick Jacobs, Asia-Pacific spokesman for Intel. He declined to elaborate on the extent of their relationship.

Intel has also been seeking more support for its drive to put microprocessors into smaller devices, led by its Atom microprocessor, the most popular netbook processor. Google said Chrome will launch first in netbooks, in the second half of next year.

Chromin Frame is a Firefox add-ons that developed by Zero Fire, it places the tab bar at the top of window, and replaces the title bar and window frame bringing it closer to the Chrome look. The Chromium extension system is in active development, now's the time to start trying to build and test Chrome extensions. It is not yet ready for use by the general public. However, there are some simple and nice extensions since Google announced design documents for Chrome extensions^{[1] [2]}.

If you want to use these extensions to enhance your Google Chrome browser, you should download and install Google Chrome developer version (which is still only a developer preview release), and then right click the Google Chrome icon in your desktop, click Properties to open the Properties dialog, and then click Shortcut tab, add -enable-extensions parameter in the Target field, as it is shown in following figure.

How to add Bing search engine to Google Chrome

Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search and MSN Search), codenamed Kumo is the name of Microsoft's new web search engine, designed to compete with the industry leaders Google and Yahoo!. Bing is a replacement for Live Search, and it went fully online on June 1, 2009. The default search engine of Chrome is Google. You can manually add or edit search engines on Chrome.

To Add Bing search engine to your Google Chrome, please do following steps.

Guidelines: Add Bing search engine to Google Chrome

Click the Tools menu, then then select Option

Click the Basics tab.
Click the Manage button in the Default search section. The Search Engines dialog box opens, then click the Add button on Search Engines dialog box.

You can also right-click the web address area on the address box and select Edit search engines to open the Search Engines dialog box.

Provide the following information. You can directly copy/paste them to the fields in Search Engine dialog

Name - Bing Search
Keyword - bing.com
URL - http://www.bing.com/?setmkt=en-US&q=%s

Click Ok button, then select Bing Search in the search engines list, click Make Default button.

Click Close button.

I wrote a PageRank Status bookmarklet on Oct 07, 2008. However, it's based JavaScript plugins and not a really Chrome extension. Google announced extensions for Chrome on May 12, the developers can develop and test Chrome extensions now.

I just developed a PageRank Status extension, it's a really toolbar extension that automatically shows Google PageRank of the current web page. With this extension, you can view the Google PageRank and Alexa Rank of the current web page, quick access to Whois, Alexa, backlinks and indexed pages in a popup window.

Google announced extensions for Chrome on May 12. Hyder Alamgir just sent a E-mail to me, he wrote a Digg This Chrome Extesion, nice and simple.

Now, you can download this simple Digg This extension with following steps. Keep in mind, it requires Chrome 2.0 (which is still only a developer preview release):

Google Chrome: 11 short films about a browser

Google recently launched a video campaign to market Google Chrome, this video includes 11 short films (mostly animated) that tell us what Google Chrome is all about.

Google Chrome Team invited some creative friends to make short movies about Google Chrome, and then watched as they came back with dozens of interesting ways to portray the browser. The short films creatively demonstrate Chome’s capabilities in the simplest way possible, so that even a non-techie could understand. Artist and illustrator Christoph Niemann wrote to Google Chrome Team about his approach. He said:

Instead of thinking of what I wanted to show, I tried to think about what I did NOT want to show. I realized that when I use a computer or browse the web these days, the one thing I do NOT think about is... a computer.

There was a time when I knew the meaning of every single item in my system folder and had to wisely allocate RAM to an application before burdening it with a complex task. Dealing with a computer has become much simpler these days (if everything works), but much more difficult and complex (especially if it doesn't behave) — almost like dealing with a living creature.

I wanted to find a simple metaphor that explains what a browser does, without showing a screen, a keyboard, the letters WWW, pixels, zeroes or ones.

A Working Pre alpha build of Chromium browser for Linux is available in PPA repository, chromium is open source engine behind Google Chrome. Chromium for Linux has GTK based interface which looks and work like windows interfaces.

Install Chromium package on Ubunt

Run following command to install Chromium package on Ubuntu:

Sudo apt install chromium-browser

PPA for Ubuntu Chromium Daily Builds maintains Ubuntu daily builds of the Chromium browser which is maintained by a bot, so it contains completely untested builds.

Google Chrome shows the thumbnails of the visited web pages from the new tab page. However, many peoples want to remove the thumbnail images for the privacy reason. There is a good news: Google Chrome's Dev channel has been updated to 2.0.174.0 in April 16, 2009, it supports for removing thumbnails from the New Tab Page (feature still in development).

Google Chrome extension tutorial for developers

The Chromium extension system is in active development. Google published a Chrome extension HOWTO tutorial for developers. However, it is not yet ready for use by the general public. The majority of the APIs are not implemented yet, and there is no UI, no autoupdate system, etc.

There is a Getting Started tutorial for Chromium developers, it shows how to create a simple extension that shows Hello, World! in Chrome. First of all, you will need to be using either the developer channel of Chromium or else a recent trunk build.

Extensions currently have very Greasemonkey-like functionality: you identify which web pages should be modified, plus JavaScript to be added to those pages. By default, the extension's JavaScript runs after the page loads, but you can specify that the extension's JavaScript should run before the page loads. Right now, you can only load one JS file, but that could change in the future. You also can't currently load Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), but that might also change.

The Chrome extension manifest, which has metadata about your extension such as name, version, etc., looks much simpler to me than how Firefox wants extensions to be packaged. That's a big plus in my book, because you spend most of your time writing code and not worrying about packaging up your plug-in. On the down side, I didn’t see any support for internationalization, which is one of the benefits of Firefox's more comprehensive way of packaging up plugins. Another limitation of the current Chrome extension spec is that you can’t do much other than modify pages via JavaScript. And I didn’t see a way to introduce new widgets into the actual “chrome” of the Chrome browser.

Create a directory to hold the code. This example assumes the directory is ~/chromium, but other names are fine.
From a shell in the Terminal, execute the following commands:

$ cd ~/chromium

$ gclient config http://src.chromium.org/svn/trunk/src

To download the initial code, update your checkout as described below.

To build Chromium on Mac yourself, you need Apple's developer tools, a reasonable level of comfort operating Xcode, a modicum of terminal-fu.

Note: If you only want to look at the source code on your own machine, you'll need at least 1.6 GB of hard drive space available. (Somewhat less for Linux, since it already has some of the dependencies installed.) If you want to build it, you will need just under 10 GB of space, including all the object files and executables.

I am a VC++ developer so I am more concerned about the application"s memory and resource problem. I just made a simply test for Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer, the result shows some interesting data.

Testing Environment

OS: Windows Vista Enterprise

Memory: 4 GB

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

Browser: Google Chrome 1.0.154.48, Firefox 3.0, Internet Explorer 7.0

The testing report

I started Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, they didn't open any web pages at that time. The GDI object and number and memory size of the browsers:

how can I use google images within google chrome without making it my default search engine? In google, it's right there and you can choose "images". I don't use it all the time but it's nice to have there when I want it. I don't want it as my default seach though. Is there a way to put google images on the bar under the URL box? So you can just click on it?

I just wrote a Bookmarklet to set a second search engine in Google Chrome, it will show a dialog box lets you enter the search keywords, and then locates to Google Image search engine:

Make sure your bookmark shows on browser(Click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar)
Drag and drop the below link in your bookmarks

Thats it and you are done!

Now, you can use Google as your default search engine and Google Image as your second search engine. To search Google Image, just click the button in the bookmark bar, enter the search keywords and then click OK, as it is shown in the figure:

What is Bookmarklet?

A bookmarklet is an applet, a small computer application, stored as the URL of a bookmark in a web browser or as a hyperlink on a HTML web page. The term is a portmanteau of the terms bookmark and applet. Whether bookmarklet utilities are stored as bookmarks or hyperlinks, they are designed to add one-click functionality to a browser or web page. When clicked, a bookmarklet performs some function, one of a wide variety such as a search query or data extraction. Usually the applet is a JavaScript program.

Google Official Blog: What happened? Very simply, human error

Google by now blogged about it, saying:

"This site may harm your computer" on every search result?!?!

What happened? Very simply, human error. Google flags search results with the message "This site may harm your computer" if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We maintain a list of such sites through both manual and automated methods. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to come up with criteria for maintaining this list, and to provide simple processes for webmasters to remove their site from the list.

We periodically update that list and released one such update to the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here's the human error), the URL of '/' was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and '/' expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file. Since we push these updates in a staggered and rolling fashion, the errors began appearing between 6:27 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. and began disappearing between 7:10 and 7:25 a.m., so the duration of the problem for any particular user was approximately 40 minutes.

The Google Chrome version 1.0.154.46 release comes to fix the problem with sending mail with Yahoo! Mail, it includes a workaround that changes the user agent string in order to make the browser work with Microsoft's Hotmail.

If you've been using the --user-agent switch to use Hotmail, you can remove the switch from your shortcuts with this release.

Everyone with the stable and beta version of Google Chrome will be eventually updated to version 1.0.154.46 or you can also update on demand by going to the Tools (wrench) menu, selecting 'About Google Chrome' and checking for updates.

There are strong differences between developer versions (not automatically upgraded, unless user has explicitly opted to subscribe to the dev channel) and beta versions (which were automatically upgraded prior to the release of version 1.0.154.36). On January 08, 2009 Google introduced a new release channels system, whereby now there are three distinct release channels : Stable channel, Beta channel, and Developer preview channel. All previous Dev channel users are moved to Beta channel, the reason is that now the new Dev channel builds will be less stable and polished than what Dev channel users have been getting during Google Chrome's Beta. Now the stable channel will be updated with features and fixes once they have been thoroughly tested in the Beta channel, and the Beta channel will be updated roughly monthly with stable and complete features from the Dev channel.The Dev channel is where ideas get tested (and sometimes fail), and it can be very unstable at times.

Google Employee Shawn posted a guide in Google Discussions on Jan 15, 2009, there is a solution to fix the problem that can't reply to or compose new email when using Hotmail in Google Chrome.

You can test it out by downloading the developer build from here http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel/ or you can wait until the next time your Google Chrome automatically updates. If you do choose to test out the developer build, please do following steps:

1. Download and install Developer Build of Chromium.

2. Right-click Google Chrome shortcut icon.

3. Click on Properties

4. In the Shortcut tab, replace the content of Target field with the following. Be sure to change with your user profile name:

"C:/Documents and Settings//Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/chrome.exe" --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1 Safari/525.1"

5. Click OK

The default search engines of Chrome is set to Google Search. You can manually add or edit search engines on Google Chrome. To Add YouTube video search engine to Google Chrome, please do following steps:

Click the Tools menu, then then select Option

Click the Basics tab.
Click the Manage button in the Default search section. The Search Engines dialog box opens.

You can also right-click the web address area on the address box and select Edit search engines to open the Search Engines dialog box.

Add YouTube video search to Google Chrome

To add a new search engine, click the Add button on Search Engines dialog box.

Provide the following information:

Name: Nickname for the search engine.
Keyword: This field is optional. Fill out this field if you want to create a text shortcut for the search engine.
URL: Type the URL for the search engine into this field, insert %s in the URL where the search terms should appear.

To add YouTube search engine to google chrome, you can directly copy/paste them to add your Google Chrome:

Name - YouTube
Keyword - YouTube
URL - http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%s

Choose YouTube search engine as default search engine

Click the Tools menu, then then select Option
Click the Basics tab.
Select the YouTube from the Default search drop-down menu.
Click the Close button.

In the Google Chrome beta version(released on Sep 2008), many Hotmail users complained that they can't reply to or compose new email in Hotmail when they using Google Chrome. Today is Jan 15, 2009, Google Chrome has been out of beta and the official version is 1.0.154.43. I just checked my Hotmail account, unfortunately, some of the Hotmail functionalties are missing/not working in Google Chrome still.

However, Hotmail works fine in Safari. Safari and Chrome are both based on Webkit. We wish Microsoft developers to fix this problem ASAP.

Microsoft released Windows 7 Beta in the last week, it includes 32 bit and 64 bit version. I installed them on my computer today. The Google Chrome works fine in Windows 7 32 bit, but gets error in Windows 7 64 bit:

Check online to see if solutions are available for the Microsoft website. If solutions are found, Windows will automatically display a website that lists steps you can take.

Click the Compatibility tab, check option Run this program in compatibility mode for, and then select Windows Vista.

Google Chrome's Dev channel has been updated to version 2.0.156.1. There are too many changes to enumerate specific bug fixes. but here are some of the highlights:

New version of WebKit

WebKit is the open source code Google Chrome uses to render web pages (HTML and CSS). 1.0.154.36 used basically the same version of WebKit as Safari 3.1, but the WebKit team has made a lot of improvements since that was released. 156.1 uses WebKit version 528.8 or, more precisely, revision 39410 from the WebKit source tree.

Form Autocomplete

Google Chrome remembers what you've typed into fields on web pages. If you type in the same form again, it will show any previous values that match what you've typed so far. You can disable Form autocomplete on the Minor Tweaks tab of the Options dialog.

Full-page zoom

Previously, page zoom (Ctrl++ or Ctrl+-) increased or decreased only the text on a page. Zoom now scales everything on the page together, so pages look correct at different zoom levels.

Spell-checking improvements

You can now enable or disable spell checking in a text field by right-clicking in the field. You can also change the spell-checking language by right clicking. To enable spell-checking in a language, add it to the list of 'languages you use to read web sites' in the Fonts and Languages dialog ([Wrench] > Options > Minor Tweaks > Fonts and Languages). Note that Google Chrome doesn't have spell-checking dictionaries for every language you can add to this list.

Autoscroll

Many users have asked for this and (thanks to our WebKit update), we now offer autoscrolling. Middle-click (click the mousewheel on most mice) on a page to turn on autoscroll, then move the mouse to scroll the page in any direction.

Docking dragged tabs

When you drag a tab to certain positions on the monitor, a docking icon will appear. Release the mouse over the docking icon to have the tab snap to the docking position instead of being dropped at the same size as the original window.

Import bookmarks from Google Bookmarks

The [Wrench menu] > Import bookmarks & settings... option now has a Google Toolbar option to import Google Bookmarks. The bookmarks get imported into your Other bookmarks folder. The bookmarks are not kept in sync; the import process simply reads in the current set of online bookmarks.

Google Chrome Bookmarklet: PageRank Status Checker V2.0 released

Updated on Jun 01, 2009: The current developer version of Chrome supports extensions since May 12, 2009. I developed a PageRank Extension for Chrome, it's a really toolbar extension that automatically shows Google PageRank of the current web page.

On Oct 2008, I developed a Javascript Plug-in that allows Google Chrome users to check the Alex Rank and Google PageRank of the page you are browsing. It's a bookmarklet(a bookmark containing JavaScript) in practice, you can also use it in FireFox, Safari, Inetnet Explorer or other browsers.

Because Google Chrome current version doesn't support for Google Toolbar and Alexa Toolbar, so it's a lot of vistors of PageRank Status Checker. Unfortunately, Alexa blocked my server IP since Dec 2008. When you check the PageRank, the page always shows Server Busy. :-(

I just modified the server script and released version 2.0, this version uses Widgets method to receive the Alexa data, it works fine now.

If you are a web designer or a webmaster, you should check browser compatibility before publishing your web pages(Example: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc..), you also want to know what is the most common screen resolution? If you don't test your pages using different screen resolutions, your page may be stretched to fit a large screen, or be cropped to fit a small screen.

When I built my first personal web site in 1999, the majority of visitors (58%) arriving my site used a display resolution of 800x600, 22% used 1024x768. This situation has changed, and today, 28% used 1024x768, 2.5% used 800x600.

I just released a new site - ScreenResolution.org to collect the screen solution information from internet users. it shows the screen resolution of your current monitor, provides screen resolution realtime statistics since Dec 12, 2008.

Google released Chrome beta on Sep 02, 2008. In just 100 days, Google has just announced that Google Chrome is ready for real consumers on real computers by cutting off their “beta” sign from the new browser.

The new version of Google Chrome including following features:

Better stability and performance of plug-ins (particularly video).

Video and audio glitches were among the most common bugs fixed during the beta period.

Even more speed.

Google Chrome starts up fast, loads pages quickly, and just keeps getting faster.

Bookmark manager and privacy controls.

Digital magazine provider Zinio offers up the current issues of 23 magazines - including U.S. News & World Report, Popular Photography, PC Magazine, Technology Review, Macworld, Elle, Car and Driver, Outside, Playboy, Penthouse for free full-browsing by iPhone users. However, you can change the non-iPhone browsers User agent string to that of iPhone and you will be access them for free. :-)

What is User-agent?

A user agent is the client application used with a particular network protocol; the phrase is most commonly used in reference to those which access the World Wide Web, but other systems such as SIP use the term user agent to refer to the user's phone. Web user agents range from web browsers and e-mail clients to search engine crawlers ("spiders"), as well as mobile phones, screen readers and braille browsers used by people with disabilities. When Internet users visit a web site, a text string is generally sent to identify the user agent to the server. This forms part of the HTTP request, prefixed with User-Agent: (case does not matter) and typically includes information such as the application name, version, host operating system, and language. Bots, such as web crawlers, often also include a URL and/or e-mail address so that the webmaster can contact the operator of the bot.

If you are using Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, you can modify the user-agent string through add-ons or registry, it's very easy. Unfortunately, Google Chrome doesn't support externsions yet and the user-agent doesn't store in registry. You must directly modify the chrome.dll - open chrome.dll in a Hex editor, search Google Chrome User-agent string and then overwrite it.

How to Change Google Chrome User-agent String

To change Google Chrome User-agent string, please do following steps:

Launch a Hex editor program(Example: Abdio Hex Editor). I'm a VC++ developer so I launch Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.
Once you have installed Google Chrome on your computer, please open following folder with Windows Explorer:

Windows XP:

C:/Documents and Settings/{User Name}/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/{Ver Number}/

Windows Vista:

C:/Users/{User Name}/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Application/{Ver Number}/

On my Vista computer, the folode is:

C:/Users/Andrew/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Application/0.3.154.9/

Please close Google Chrome if running, and then backup chrome.dll file in above folder.
Open chrome.dll with binary mode. In Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, press Ctrl + O hotkey, choose chrome.dll, then click Open With button, choose Binary Editor on the dialog.

Search user-agent string for Google Chrome:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT %d.%d; en-US) AppleWebKit/%d.%d (KHTML, like Gecko) %s Safari/%d.%d

Overwrite user-agent string. The string for iPhone is:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543 Safari/419.3

Note: If the length of iPhone string exceeds the original string of Chrome, DO NOT INSERT ANY STRING in chrome.dll. The replaced string in my chrome.dll file is:

Mozilla/5.0 (IPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebkit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/

Save chrome.dll, and then launch Google Chrome browser. If you start Google Chrome failed after saving changes, please restore chrome.dll from backup.
Type about: in the address bar to confirm if the user-agent has changed.

You can also visit http://www.HttpUserAgent.org, it will show your user-agent string online.

Export Google Chrome bookmarks data file: Synchronize your bookmarks

The current version of Google Chrome supports for importing bookmakrs from Internet Explorer, FireFox and other browsers. You can just click menu Tools | Import Bookmarks and settings to complete the importing task. Unfortunately, if you want to move the Chrome bookmarks to a new computer, you will notice that Google Chrome does not yet have a way to export bookmarks. :-(

There is a FAQ in Google Chrome help:

Bookmarks: Export bookmarks

This feature is not available at the moment. If you imported your bookmarks from another browser, your data should still be available in the original browser.

If you search "Export Google Chrome bookmarks" in Google, you will find some programs to help you synchronize the bookmarks. However, there is a easy way to do that, you needn't install any programs!

Once you have installed Google Chrome on your computer, please open following folder with Windows Explorer:

Windows XP:

C:/Documents and Settings/{User Name}/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/

Windows Vista:

C:/Users/{User Name}/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/

In that folder, you will find a data file named Bookmarks:

You can directly backup this file. To Synchronize your bookmarks to a new comptuer, just copy the file to the same folder on your new computer, and then restart Google Chrome, all of your bookmarks will now be there!

Google released Chrome on September 2, 2008. I just noticed that today is November 11 :-) , Google’s Chrome Browser was two months old. My blog ChromeFans.org was online on September 11, to this day exactly two months as a whole. I checked the access reports of my site and found some very interesting data.

With IE or Firefox, we can install Google Toolbar and Alexa Toolbar to check the Google PageRank and Alex Rank. Unfortunately, the current version of Google Chrome doesn't support any extensions such as Google Toolbar and Alex toolbar. To install Chrome Google Pagerank Plug-in, please do following steps:

The way A:

Make sure your Google Chrome browser always shows the Bookmarks bar. If not, click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar.
Drag and drop PageRank Status to your Chrome bookmarks bar.

The way B:

Make sure your Google Chrome browser always shows the Bookmarks bar. If not, click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar.
Right click on the bookmarks bar, and then select Add Page.

In the Name field, enter "PageRank Status" or something you will remember, then for the URL field paste:

Install Google Chrome Plug-in: Download YouTube Video/Movie in Google Chrome

Install this Javascript Plug-in is very easy, please do following steps:

Now, the Javascript plugin is installed in your Google Chrome. Go to the YouTube video you want to download, when it starts playing click your "Download YouTube Video" bookmark and you will see the .flv file start to download in Google Chrome's download status bar.

Lots of people still have Windows 2000. Some people have Windows XP or Vista at home, at work it is Windows 2000, - corporate users are much more conservative. Some people use Windows 2000 because they don't like the look of Windows XP. they prefer the classic Windows Logo, and the classic theme.

Why is Windows 2000 not supported?

I think perhaps because:

Today is 2008.
Windows 2000 Server's mainstream support ended June 30, 2005. While extended support will be available until July 13, 2010.
We are already going from Windows XP sp3 to Vista, and the next OS is being designed.
Update: On the comment #1, the webmaster of surfchrome.com said that's less than 1%(0.72%) of visitors used Windows 2000 to visit his site last month. I just checked last month stats of ChromeFans, only 0.45% used Windows 2000:

Windows XP: 62.54%
Windows Vista: 21.95%
Mac OS : 1.63%
Windows 2003: 1.05%
Windows 2000: 0.45%

Good news for Mac and Linux users: CrossOver Chromium

Google has announced plans to support native Mac and Linux versions of Chromium, but they have yet to be released. The folks at CodeWeavers have successfully built a version of Chromium, Google Chrome's codebase, for non-PowerPC Intel Macs. they named it CrossOver Chromium.

The description of CrossOver Chromium from Codeweavers.com:

CrossOver Chromium is a Mac and Linux port of the open source Chromium web browser. CrossOver Chromium is available for download from CodeWeavers, free of charge.
