After a lecture on meiosis today, I thought about this possibility and felt so original and bad ass only to find out others thought of it before me. While it sucks that I'm not quite as smart as I hoped, I'm still pleased that this is being researched. Imagine, random fertilization x 2!!!! Now that's bad ass. One draw back I would fear is a second wind of eugenic's like tyranny, where some people in the 1984 future (well, maybe 2084) control not just our mating habits, but the gametes that are allowed to survive!!! bum bum bum....

Oh shoot, I hope I didn't just give away my second idea; sci-fi genetic engineering novel in a police state society.

Hi Mayank,

I've reactivated Resources, but beware, some of the information may be dated. You will find the excel file with the list of chromosome locations helpful for drawing the ideograms. I used a StdDraw library in conjunction with these coordinates to draw the chromosomes.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the great post, its very helpful.
As a Bioinformatics Masters student in Germany, i also need to generate ideograms for some genomic locations for my current academic research project. However, until now, i haven't really been able to find any open source java libraries to do this. Do you know of any ? If not, could you please provide your code ?

Also, the link to the Resources section doesn't lead up to anywhere. Could you fix that, please?

Thanks !
Regards,
Mayank Kumar
