Woken by the alarm clock trilling some faux-harp.

It’s a warm day and I fall down a brief Major Lazer and Buraka Som Sistema rabbit hole while finding something to listen to while working.

Spend a while listening to my Spotify Discovery playlist, which seems to have a few more gems than usual this week.

The kids in the school opposite my flat seem to be doing some sort of drumming and singing workshop. Good for them, but my headphones go back on.

Someone shares a link to a mix by Kris Wadsworth on Soundcloud so I listen to that for a bit but decide it’s not what I’m after.

Head to the gym, which means podcasts on the way there and back, and drum and bass to soundtrack some of the heavier lifts.

Back to work accompanied by Michael Kiwanuka’s new album, which I’d added to my ‘New stuff to listen to’ playlist.

And that’s it for another year.

This is what Harkive is.

I’m doing some quite tricky work today, and handing things over to someone, so I’m not expecting to listen to all that much while I’m working today. That said, here’s a running account:

Mr Fine Wine’s Downtown Soulville show while reading on the tube. It’s a radio show that I get as a podcast every week.
While having some lunch I watched a 60 Minutes interview with Eminem that had showed up on Reddit.
The new Ratatat album, Magnifique, via Spotify.
The new album by the bird and the bee, Recreational Love, also via Spotify.
Wilco, Star Wars. Also on Spotify.
Someone tweeted about how their niece (Holly Macve) has been signed to Bella Union and will be touring with John Grant. Listened to one of her demos on Soundcloud.
Listening now hijacked by Soundcloud. Listened to Major Lazer’s cover of Lost by Frank Ocean then a DnB playlist from UKF.

I spent the morning working from home with Spotify to keep me company (headphones on because laptop speakers are rubbish).

Chet Faker’s ‘Built On Glass’ has been sat on my New stuff to listen to playlist for a while so I put that on. It’s later moved over to the Good stuff 2014 list.

The 'New stuff…’ list is usually populated from within Spotify these days, via Spotify’s New Releases page and a couple of apps - any Decent Music and Pitchfork.

Sometimes recommendations creep in and, when they do, it’s via Twitter. For example, Lyle Bignon mentioned that Jungle’s debut is available so I added that to the list. That went to the 'Good stuff 2014’ list too.

I also listened to Royksopp & Robyn’s 'Do It Again’ and Owen Pallett’s 'In Conflict’.

Work was interrupted by lunch (watched a saved video on Vimeo - no music) and a bus down to the Southbank Centre - talky podcasts while walking, Mr Fine Wine’s Downtown Soulville while reading articles.

Meeting done and back to Owen Pallett and then some S. Carey before a tweet from @cybrum mentioned Gotan Project, which made me think of St Germain (possibly also influenced by an email asking me to proofread a short French translation). I queued up a few tracks from Tourist, which was played everywhere when I lived there many years ago.

Work done, I wandered down to a meet-up (talky podcasts on iPhone) and after that caught the bus home (Mr Fine Wine).

Interesting to note that, as compared to last year, radio plays a much smaller part in my day. Otherwise, my musical processes are much the same.

How to listen to your Instapaper articles as a podcast

I listen to podcasts when walking around. If I’m sat on the bus or tube I read things I’ve saved to Instapaper. Thing is, I’ve always got more Instapaper articles than podcasts - in fact my saved articles are pretty out of control at this point.

I’ve just discovered how to turn newly saved articles into a podcast. Here’s how:

Sign up to SoundGecko.
Sign up to IFTTT and enable an email or Gmail channel if you haven’t already.
Use this Instapaper to SoundGecko IFTTT recipe. It takes an RSS feed from Instapaper and turns that into emails (you can email articles to SoundGecko - you can add RSS feeds too, but I couldn’t get this to work directly). You just need to add your Instapaper RSS feed and a ‘To address’ to get the recipe to work.
Getting an RSS feed from Instapaper is trickier since the redesign but this video will show you how to do it. You can either get a feed from your unread items or just from a particular folder.
The 'To address’ should be go@soundgecko.com (info on the FAQ page if you need it).
To listen to your transcribed articles, download the SoundGecko app or subscribe to your SoundGecko feed via your podcast app of choice (I like Downcast on the iPhone). You can get your feed from the account preferences page.

A few notes:

Once you’ve listened to an article via SoundGecko, you’ll still need to go into Instapaper to archive or delete it.

On SoundGecko’s free plan there’s a limit of 4,000 words per article. If you’re regularly hitting that cut-off then $2.95/month to upgrade is presumably worth it.

If you use Pocket, adding an RSS feed might be more straightforward. I’ve not tried that though. In any case, on the free SoundGecko plan you can only add one RSS feed, so sending things via email would get you round that limit.
