Now what if we are going to modify the sound that will play something like "Good Day Adam, how are you?" upon starting up the computer? Will it be nice if you play a sound recording or a narrated text when your computer starts? That is absolutely cool right? This is no trick and will not do harm in your computer as we are only going to put a program in the startup folder of your operating system. And if you wish to remove it, you can just delete the file anytime. So here is the procedure.

Making a Custom Sound on Computer Startup

a. Open notepad and paste in the following code (choose only one of the codes)

for narrated voice copy :

Dim speaks, speech
speaks="Welcome, Please wait for a moment to prepare your computer"
Set speech=CreateObject("sapi.spvoice")
speech.Speak speaks

for a recorded wave sound copy :

strSoundFile = "C:\windows\Media\Notify.wav"
Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
strCommand = "sndrec32 /play /close " & strSoundFile
objShell.Run strCommand, 0, False

(test if your script plays the sound by clicking it)

b. Save the copied file as "chstutorial.vbs" where chstutorial can be replaced with any name you like and also maintain the quotations in saving the file.

NOTE : If you used the recorded wave sound file, make sure that the you put your wave file to the target directory ex: "C:\windows\media\my sound.wav" where my sound.wav is your customized sound file.

c. Now you have your visual basic scripts ready, copy that file to to the startup folder. Below are listed where the startup folder should be found in the default installation of your operating system.

for Win Xp, navigate to :
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

for Win Vista and Win 7, navigate to
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

d. Disable your default startup sound by going to the "Control Panel", "Sounds and Audio Devices", "Sounds Tab", in the Program Events find "Windows Startup", under Sounds option, choose under drop down option "No Sound". Alternately, you can also just look for the wave file you wish to play on startup even without using the VBS script above. This is simple but now you know you have options which to take. :-)

By the way, the sound will of course only play upon startup.

How to Directly Download Facebook Picture Album with Right-Click

Can we really do that?! TESDA's NC examinations are held to evaluate the work quality of our country's technical-vocational workers. But this evaluation however is used to get quality workers by most of the employers both local and foreign. If you won't be keying for a technical job, you don't have to be a TESDA certified worker. But if you want to have a high paying technical job abroad, a TESDA certification is a MUST. Most employers abroad will only hire TESDA certified workers.

As for computer hardware servicing technicians, it is a MUST. If you are a self professed computer technician and wanting to have your own computer shop, you can not register your shop if you or your worker is not a TESDA Computer Hardware Servicing NC II certified. And if you want to get employed abroad, remember that foreign employers prefer CompTIA+ passer or equivalent like TESDA Computer Hardware Servicing NC II Certification. Since Computer Hardware Servicing NC II examination is readily available, take the exam today and be a computer hardware servicing nc ii certified technician!

Is there a formula or hint to pass Computer Hardware Servicing NC II Exam?

There's none. Why? Because the examination is not definitely the same but strictly follows TESDA's Assessment regulations. How can it not be the same? Because it greatly depends on how a TESDA Assessor conducts the assessment.

Even though the way how the assessment will be conducted is not the same, the regulations are the same. I took the computer hardware servicing nc ii exam a couple of years ago and now that I applied for as an Assessor, the exam is still the same in 2006 and 2010. Here is a list of how things were laid for in the examination.

System Unit Assembly and Disassembly

Occupational Health and Safety Precautions

- Observe this all throughout the examination

DOS Commands (not the true DOS)

- You will be needing this to install win 98

WIN XP Installation

- Installation of the Operating System in another partition aside from C:

Dual OS Installation (we had Win 98 and XP SP 2)

Partition Sizes and Software Installation

- Changing the default installation directory of the applications to be installed

Theoretical Questions both written and oral

- You will be asked about identification and functions of the system unit peripherals and components, troubleshooting techniques and approaches.

Mock Troubleshooting

- You will be given an intentionally defective system unit and identify the trouble and diagnose it

Networking

- You will be crimping a network patch and connect a computer in a network using a switch and share a network printer.

Documentation

- You will be writing down how you did things in the assessment specially with the assembly and disassembly of the system unit and of the mock troubleshooting.

Report

- Make a summary report of the entire assessment.

I just want to make clear that the list provided for is not definite as what will come out in the computer hardware servicing nc ii exam. But sure it does give you a little hunch how the examination will be.

During the examination, you are required to observe troubleshooting safety. Have your own tools and installers (best if you have utilities and driver packs alongside). Use proper troubleshooting attire. Befriend your assessor - he/she wants to help you pass if your deserving enough.

And to be able to pass the examination, you should have adequate theoretical and actual knowledge on computers and computer troubleshooting. The examination revolves on the aspect of computer troubleshooting, so you must have at least some experience in fixing computers to be able to "see" the real world of computer troubleshooting. If you don't have a previous knowledge in fixing computers, see this wonderful blog with lots of examples on how to troubleshoot computers with video, boot, virus, and other computer related problems for free.

For me, file and driver backup should also be included in the exams. As well as employing vista, win 7, and ubuntu for installation. Soldering and voltage testing for power supplies must also be included in the examination. And there are a lot of things to be included yet in the examination.

A newer package of examination should be given by TESDA for the newer computer hardware servicing nc ii technicians but it is also great to have that old package to make passing of the examination easier. :-)

Keyboard Shortcuts for Ubuntu

You can actually see the keyboard shortcut for Ubuntu if you navigate to System> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts on the main menu. You may have your own picture or any favorite picture to be placed as the background of your USB flashdrive. This is done by putting or copying your picture in root directory of your USB Flashdrive or thumbdrive. Also to be copied is a file called "desktop.ini" file. Follow the steps below to have your USB Flashdrive or thumbdrive a cool picture background!

Adding a Picture in your Flashdrive

1. Copy a picture into your flashdrive. Remember the filename and the file extension of your picture as picture may come as "my pic.jpg" or "my pic.gif"

2. The best picture background for your USB Flashdrive is a picture having a solid plain fill like white, black, dark blue, or any other safer colors. Having high contrast picture as a background can only cause a "trashy" look and will make you find or select your files difficult.

Adding the Desktop.ini file to your Flashdrive

1. Open Notepad by pressing Win+R then type inside the box "notepad" (without the quotation)

2. As the Notepad window appears, copy the following codes below

--- start copy

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]

iconarea_image=my pic.jpg

iconarea_text=0x75F85B

--- stop copy

click to enlarge

"my pic.jpg" should be replaced with the name of your picture and its file extension

"0x75F85B" if the text color in Hex. We can have our faces or any image as an icon instead of that boring default icon for your USB Flashdrive. This USB Flashdrive trick can have your choice of a customized icon that can either be downloaded or use Iconfx to create you own customized icons. Follow these simple steps to create one great customized USB Flashdrive icon! This USB Flashdrive trick is simple yet rocks!

Using MsPaint to create the icon

1. We will first create a customized icon. A 32x32 pixel icon can be simply made using Ms Paint. To open Ms Paint, press Win+R then type in "mspaint" (without quotes)

2. What we will be doing in this example is to "create" a Recycle Bin icon. We will simply copy its image by showing the desktop (Win+D) then press the "PrintScreen" button of your keyboard. Pressing the "PrintScreen" button will copy the full screen image by which we will be pasting this image in MsPaint later.

3. Go to the MsPaint Window and press CTRL+V to paste in the image of the whole screen. Use the "Select" tool to crop an image of the pasted picture. As said earlier, We will be using the Recycle Bin image as the icon. Crop the Recycle Bin image tightly.

4. After finishing to crop, press CTRL+X then CTRL+N to open new Ms Paint Window and press CTRL+V to paste in the newly cropped image. Set the image attribute by pressing CTRL+E and type in 32 for the width and 32 for the height and click OK. Save the file in your USB Flashdrive root directory with the filename as "my icon.ico" (with quotations ~ don't ask! :-] ).

5. Next is to make an Autorun.inf file. Go to "Run" or press Win+R, then in the box type in "notepad" (without quotes). In your notepad window, copy the following code:

start copy

--------

[autorun]

icon=my icon.ico

--------

end copy

6. Save this file in your USB Flashdrive root directory as "Autorun.inf" (with quotations)

7. Remove your flash drive and plug it back and there you go! :-)

Using the Downloaded Icon

1. Download your favorite icon and save it in your USB Flashdrive.

2. Copy the following code and save it as "autorun.inf" (with quotations)

start copy

--------

[autorun]

icon=my icon.ico

--------

end copy

3. Replace the "my icon.ico" to the name of your downloaded icon name. Ex "face.ico"

4. Unplug then replug your USB Flashdrive and see what happens!

If you want to create your own icon use IconFx.

Hope you like this USB Flashdrive trick!

How to Set System Restore in XP

Setting System Restore should be practiced before making any changes in your computer specially if you're dealing with the registry. What is needed in System Restore is the a little space of your hard drive (which by the way you can adjust the size by going to system properties, then to the System Restore Tab) and choosing a Restoration Point. So, here it is done.

1. Go to "Run" and type : %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

2. The restore dialogue box appears and it will ask you what task will you perform. You should choose "Create Restoration Point".

3. Then you are asked to write a restoration name. You can just write anything like "Before changing the registry" or something like that. Then click the button "Create". Wait for a minute or so then you're done!

4. So if ever you made something like editing the registry or installing a game or other software and made your system to crash, then you can just revert by rolling back the action using System Restore. To do so, open System Restore ( Go to "Run", type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe) and as the System Restore dialog box appears choose "Restore my computer at an earlier time". Just follow the instructions then.

Preventing Programs to Run on Startup

We usually prevent programs to run at startup using the msconfig (go to "run" then type msconfig). We can also prevent some programs to run at startup using the Registry Editor. Before editing the registry, be sure to have it backed up and have set system restore. Here's how we prevent programs to run at startup.

1. Navigate to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

2. At the right pane, you will see listed programs that run at startup. You can remove a program or programs by simply clicking right on the program string value and choose delete.

3. Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

Turning On or Off XP's Removable Drive Autorun

Autoruns are used by virus coders to launch their virus via removable drives. So please be careful in doing so because sometimes the effects are irreversible.

2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer\ "NoDrivePathAutorun"

3. Click twice on the "NoDrivePathAutorun" and you should see the default string value of 95 0 0 0, just change the first value 95 to 91.

4. Restart your computer.

Changing the Default Location for Program Installation

You always wanted to change or customize the location of the programs you are to install. Perhaps if you'd like to put the programs you are to install in a folder called "My Programs" in another directory other than C:\ like D:\. To be able to do this, we must make some changes or "tweaks" in the registry. Just follow the simple things below to get the job done nice and easy. :-)

1. Go to Start then click "Run". In the open field of "Run" type in without quotes "regedit" and navigate to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

2. Look at the left pane of the Registry Editor window then search for and open "ProgramFilesDir".

3. In the "Value Data" box change the default installation location by typing in the new location for Prgram Installation like D:\My Programs

4. Log off or Restart your Computer.

Try installing a new program and see if the program installs in D:\My Programs. :-)

Blocking Websites using Hosts File in Vista or Xp

Do you like to restrict your friends or a brother or sister access certain websites? You may not have to use third party programs to do the job. Whatever reasons you have to block a site or websites, I'm glad to share this tut I have learned from others. Share this tut as well or refer this blog to others. If you have another way to block a site, please do share it to us.

Blocking Websites using Hosts File in Vista or Xp

1. Let us assume we are going to block our blogsite http://www.clhidohardware.blogspot.com from any web browser you have. If we are to block a specific site, we must indicate the possible urls a user might write on the address bar like clhidohardware.com, http://clhidohardware.blogspot.com, wwww.clhidohardware.blogspot.com. These possible urls must be screened or filtered from the Hosts File.

2. Go to "Run" and type in "cmd". And in the command prompt type this in without quotes net user administrator /active:yes . This will give you administrative rights to be able to do the tweaks.

3. Go to "Run" from the Start button and type in "Drivers" ( without the quotes )

4. As the Drivers window pops out, go to folder "etc".

5. Inside folder "etc", open file "Hosts"

6. Open file Hosts with notepad.

7. Do you see "127.0.0.1 localhost", add up below it like:

127.0.0.1    www.clhidohardware.blogspot.com
127.0.0.1    http://clhidohardware.blogspot.com
127.0.0.1    clhidohardware.blogspot.com

8. Save the file. Try opening a browser and type in either of the three urls to test if it screens the address. If it opens, then it hasn't able to block the urls you entered in the Hosts file. Try using 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1 in the Hosts file.

Hope you successfully screened off the sites you wish to block. :-)

Hiding and Preventing Access to Your Hard Drive using "Group Policy"

Preventing Access to Drives in My Computer Using Group Policy

Hiding Drives in My Computer using group Policy

There are times you need to hide a drive in your computer or prevent other people from accessing it. This is very useful if the computer you are using can also be accessed by your co-worker or your family members and you wish they can't see the drive where the contents are or simply they won't be able to access a certain drive. That sounds so good right? You won't be needing any third party programs to do the trick! All you need to do is follow these simple instruction. And then later, you will be able to do the hiding and preventing access to your hard drive like a breeze.

A. Press Win+R, as the "run" box appears type in "gpedit.msc" without quotes.
B. The Group Policy window should now appear. Navigate to User Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Windows Explorer then on the Left Pane of the window search for " Prevent Access to Drives in My Computer " and click radio button on "Enabled" and below the options select the drive you wish to Prevent Access from using the Drop Down Menu and click "OK"

C. If you want to Hide a certain drive in My Computer, look for "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" which is just above the "Prevent Access to Drives in My Computer" option. Again, all you need to do is enable the option and choose the drive you wish to hide.

D. Press F5 Key and you should see the results immediately.

If you have problems with this, please comment. :-)

Change and Replace the "Start" Button Text with your name

( Tested on WIN XP -= Use trick at your own risk! =- )

Have you ever wanted to to change the word "Start" in the Start Button of Win XP but could not figure out how? Changing it is so easy, you dont have to be a geek to do so. All you need to have is a program called Resource Hacker and a brain to follow some instruction. Sounds easy right?

What we are going to do is to change the text which happens to be "Start" of the start button. We can only do this so if we alter the text of the explorer shell ( explorer.exe ) with the help of ResHack ( Resource Hacker ). Then after doing so, we need to change the string value of the Shell by typing in the name of the edited explorer.exe file. Lets get started!

A. Download the Resource Hacker Program and save it on your desktop.

B. After successfully downloaded ResHack, we will navigate to the system32 folder of the Windows Directory. We can easily access the directory by opening "Run" and type in "%systemroot%" without the quotes. It should display something like c:\WINDOWS or D:\WINDOWS but by default the root is C:. Once you are at the WINDOWS directory, look for the file named "explorer.exe" and create a backup of it and save it on your desktop.

C. Now, we need to terminate explorer.exe by ending its process at the Task Manager. Click right on the taskbar and then t "Task Manager". Alternately, you may use key combinations as CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. Go then to the "Processes" Tab and look for explorer.exe. Once explorer.exe is found, click right on it and choose "End Process Tree"

D. We now need to open Resource Hacker. Go to "Applications" Tab, then to "New Task" which is situated at the lower right portion of the window. Once clicked, you will see a "Create new task" window. Noticeably, a "Browse" button should be clicked and navigate to your desktop and click on ResHack to open it.

E. Editing of Explorer.exe will now be possible using Resource Hacker. To do so, just go to "File", then "Open" and locate the Explorer.exe file in the C:\WINDOWS or the WINDOWS Directory of another partition.

F. In the left Panel of the Resource Hacker, navigate to "String Table". Inside "String Table", go to Folder 37 then click on 1033. On the right pane, double click on the word START of line 578 and once START is highlighted type in any word you wish to replace it like Clhido. Then Click on the "Compile Script" button then go to "File" and click on "Save as" to save the edit as "testing". Exit

G. Again, go to "Task Manager" and open "New Task" then type in "regedit" ( without quotes ).

H. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon then double click on the "Shell" String Value and replace "Explorer.exe" to "testing.exe" then click ok.

I. Log Off or Restart Computer

J. Comment or link this blog to help share the trick. :-)

http://clhidohardware.blogspot.com

Changing Windows Properties Logo

Sometimes, you want to make some personal touches on your Windows System Properties Box with a big label of your name. Luckily windows grants us to make these changes by simple creation of the logo and some ini file for additional info about the label. I got this great tweak from the windows help central page and laid out things very easy for to follow. So here it is.

A. First you need to create two things, your bmp logo and the info. Your logo should have a size of 180 x 120 pixels (180 for width and 120 for height ) and save it as a bmp (bitmap). You can make out a logo plainly from mspaint. ;-) Then, save your logo as oemlogo.bmp

B. Now having a 180 x 120 bmp logo, make an oem info by copying the text below. Do edits on the text below to suit your personal touches. Open notepad ( press win+r then type notepad ) then copy below

=== start copy below ===

[General]

Manufacturer=Windows Help Central

Model=ShowCase

[Support Information]

Line1=" "

Line2=" For tricks and other help:"

Line3=""

Line4=" This part will change the info wgich is customizable"

Line5=" Windows XP Tips by clhidohardware "

Line6=" You may add something here..."

Line7=""

Line8=" write your email here.."

Line9=" or your number maybe...."

Line10=""

Line11=""

Line12=" http://www.clhidohardware.com/"

=== stop copy ===

Save this file as "oeminfo.ini" (weird but please include the quotations") and choose "all" in the file type. You can find the contents of your ini file if the Support Information button is clicked.

C. Now having the two files, copy both the oeminfo.ini and oemlogo.bmp files.

D. Press Win+R and in the "open" box, type in system32

E. Make a folder in drive c: . Let us assume we'll make a folder called "drokz"

B. Locate the picture and the file you wish to "merge" (kay dili man jud siya i-merge mao akong gibutangan ug quotations) and copy those two files to the folder you have just created in c:. Let us assume I have secret.txt and clhido.jpg files.

C. Inside the folder with the copied files, click right on the secret.txt and add choose add to "secret.rar" (will later become "secret.rar")

D. Press Win+R then type in "cmd" (without quotes) to open the Command Prompt.

E. In the command prompt, type in "c:" ( if your already at c:, type in "cd\" to bring you to the root directory )

F. Go to your your folder by typing in "cd drokz". Once already inside directory "drokz", type in "dir" to check if the two files are available.

G. Once available, type this in : "copy /b clhido.jpg + secret.rar" ( /b indicates the binary file switch )

H. Your Done! :-) You may now delete secret.txt and secret.rar from folder "drokz" of Drive C:. You may not be able to see secret.txt anymore but you know it is already "embedded" in the clhido.jpg file.

To extract the hidden file from your Picture

A. Click right on the picture ( clhido.jpg ) and select "Open With" then click "Choose Program" then finally select WinRar.

B. You will then see a winrar window and see inside it the file secret.txt and you may extract it then. :-)

Do Comment if something goes wrong.... :-)

FREE VOCATIONAL TRAINING COURSE CLHIDO

CLHIDO FREE VOCATIONAL HARDWARE SERVICING COURSE

The City Livelihood and Home Industries Development Office (CLHIDO) is offering different free vocational courses for aiding the unemployed youths and adults in Dumaguete City.
