Continue reading]]> On February 28th, our Sophomores Narayan C., Sujatha C., Alex Y., Chloe L., Emily L., Alyssa W., and Freshmen Eric C. and Isaac S. proudly represented Camas High School at the 2026 BPA Regional Science Bowl held at the University of Portland. The teams performed exceptionally well, winning all of their round-robin games and advancing to the double-elimination round in #4 and #5 place out of 16 teams.

Continue reading]]> Recently, class of 2024 Magnet alumna Madi Williams published research in the Life journal on peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Through a collegiate program called MedRamp, her team analyzed data on genetic mutations across patient groups and compared variations by ethnicity and gender, with the goal of better understanding how the cancer occurs across populations in order to improve prevention and treatment.

What stood out to Madi the most wasn’t just the research process, but the broader impact that it could have. “We’re looking at the whole person and all of the factors that could contribute,” she says, “so that was exciting, and we hope to help more people in the future with that data.”

With her research published, Madi has accomplished an incredible milestone in her academic career. When asked what prepared her most for this experience, Madi emphasizes that the Magnet program played a major role in helping her feel comfortable with the research process by teaching her important skills such as structuring a research paper. She also greatly appreciates the variety of research projects she completed in high school through Magnet that helped pave the path toward the research that she decided to pursue in college.

Beyond academics, Madi highlights the importance of connection within the Magnet program. “I think Magnet classes and the experiences you have help you make connections with your teachers and ask questions to learn more about subjects you’re interested in.” These relationships gave her the confidence to reach out for support and take initiative, skills that continue to shape her college experience today.

Today, Madi continues to build on her strong foundations beyond the classroom. Whether it’s through conducting public health research on childhood stability and long-term health outcomes or competing as a Division I rower, her work reflects the same excellence and initiative that she has always demonstrated.

Continue reading]]> Senior Tenzin Kelsang was recently awarded the University of Washington’s Presidential Scholarship. Approximately 12-15 incoming freshman receive this scholarship each year, which provides a $10,000 scholarship renewable for all four years of undergrad.

Tenzin says that receiving this scholarship means a lot to him. His Tibetan identity has always been a central part of his life, and his essay was written on Tibetan outreach and the work he has done to support his community.

Through Students for a Free Tibet, he protested Tibetan uprising day on March 10th. He also volunteered at the Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association, where he taught kids how to write and speak Tibetan and how to play the dranyen, a traditional Tibetan instrument.

“My mom was born in India, my dad moved from Tibet when he was six,” Tenzin explains. “They went to school in India, and came to the United States in 2000.”

Tenzin hopes to honor their legacy through his work. “I wanted to help shed light on their struggles,” he says.

Continue reading]]> Our very own students Alyssa Wong, Chloe Luo, and Liya Zhao recently won the 2025 Congressional App Challenge for the 3rd Congressional District with Can-Screen, an app that helps users screen for cancer and explore educational resources. The competition is provided by U.S. House of Representatives to encourage students to pursue computer science, and practical technology solution building  for the community.

Can-Screen was developed as the trio’s freshman year research project. They were inspired to pursue the topic in order to increase accessibility to cancer screenings. “Everybody has a story to tell, a personal connection about cancer,” Alyssa said. “Cancer screening is so important, but people don’t even know that they’re supposed to be getting this screening and that they’re eligible.”

The trio acknowledged their AP biology teacher Brianna Abraham and Banny Wong, Alyssa Wong’s dad, who is a gastroenterologist at Vancouver Clinic, for supporting them through the process and providing guidance based on their expertise. Chloe reflects on the experience, emphasizing that “If even one more person gets cancer screening because of our app, it would mean so much to us, and all the late-night debugging will have been worth it.”

Over 13,800 students from across the country submitted 4,600 original apps focused that on different world challenges.  As winners, Wong, Luo and Zhao have the opportunity to showcase their projects to Congress, staff and industry leaders in April on Capitol Hill.

Continue reading]]> Recently, our sophomore students have been busy reading Lord of the Flies (LOTF) in their MST Honors English class. This debut novel by British writer William Golding follows a group of schoolboys who are stranded on an island after a plane crash. With the progression of the story, civilization crumbles and chaos reigns.

As students analyzed the themes of the novel, Mr. Greene gave them a chance to experience island competition with a survival challenge (where luckily, no lives are at stake). Over the course of 3 weeks, groups participated in a series of LOTF themed challenges that included songwriting, PSAs, and choreographing interpretive dances, all while competing for extra credit and glory. Congratulations to the winning group! Their final challenge performance is linked below.
