They are mainly, US sociology with ingredents derived from Euopean sociological schools. Nothing Asian.

In Taiwan, my majoring in Sociology was assigned by the national entrance exam scores. The climate at that time, from my recollection, was quite similar to this governer's concens. Students should not know how to open their brain, release their mind (Ya, Taiwan was under Martial Law from 1949 to 1987, the world longest martial law imposed on Taiwanese people. The One-Ruling-Party controlled everything for fear of the CCP regime's invasion..). And the college professors just read through yellowish lecture notes which were older than my age.

Jo, glad you know that. During late 2015 to 2016, our department's sociology sections were reduced, replaced by Psychology. I preferred to teach Soc for Psy.

Mary, I agree. Reminds me of a tiny story. One semester, a student took my sociology at the very last mintute. After a couple of sessions, she came to me and said, "In fact, Sociology is quite interesting, not like they told me- better to choose Psychology instead of Sociology." I asked, "Why did they tell you so? " She said, "Just some common friends. They felt that Sociology was not good for human life." She also mentioned that her relatives were very religious, and Sociology was not good for them.

Well... Religion tneds to be concervative but can also play the liberating roles..., depending on whom/what is behind it...

In Taiwan, I majored in sociology. It was not a matter of personal choice, nor an expression of any privileged individualism. It was assigned based on my entrance exam scores (before the educational reform). It wouldn't be embarrassing to admit that my understanding of the subject was shallow. One of the main reasons could be Taiwan facing severe threats from the CCP regime, worsen by the ruler's enacting Martial Law around the Island, college professors (at NTU) often perfunctorily reading through lecture notes which were older than I was. There were no teaching evaluations, nor “publish or perish” expectations to "excite" them.

At Madison, time ran fast and my 2-year scholarship which I earned from Taiwan, was expired. Again, I did not have enough time to exam my understanding of Sociology. Then due to an opportunity to teach locally, I found a school closer by to continue my educaation - UMN, not sociology any more, but learning technology. (Since I taught at a tech college, it might enhance my "survival rate" as an instructor at this school which was the first time to hire a non-native English speaking Asian since 1912.)

Then I started a dual role as a full time faculty and part-time student.

So how could I teach sociology with great sense of joy? In the end, from my recollection, I owed that possibility to my students. Their doubts and questions pushed me to delve more deeply into reading and thinking. For example, when I talked about individal in the social contexts, most people seldom having the luxury to make an absolute personal decision. Then, one of my students raised his hand, " My joining military, be honest to you - 100% from my free will! Nothing affected me to make that choice!"

You know, this was a tech college. 85% of students came from working class or disadvantageous families.

This is a society that prides itself on “individualism.” Many people seem to believe in it wholeheartedly—and that, in fact, was one of the most challenging aspects of teaching sociology.

I did not explain why I joined the military in Taiwan. Most people hold certain views at people joining military, no matter what, except, the princes or princesses of royal families.

Recalling that time, my parents were aging and ill, and universal health care was little more than an impossible dream. For families with limited means, one had to stay strong—or pray not to fall ill. My grandparents died without opportunities to access medical treatments, which was quite common around people like us.

Meanwhile, Taiwan, under the rule of Chiang Kai-shek and his son, faced the looming threat of the CCP. Many young people were drafted or recruited into military service. Military budgets were always the priority of the national spending (like now...) During that hard times, I had just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, but the job market was far from welcoming.

The military, however, offered something crucial : access to medical care for cadets’ parents, without the crushing burden of hospital bills. At the same time, the nation herself stood at a moment of natioal security crisis - the bigger threat from the CCP regime.

And so—almost inevitably—I found myself in the military - for 8 years. Later, I won a scholarship to study at any English speaking country. I chose the US. - a great nation at that time.

(Note. Later - from 1995, the Universal Health Care ACT prevailed. Many world health organizations predicting it wouldn't last for 10 years. Bankruptcy was inevitable - from the Capitalism's Caculator. But, see, what happens, Taiwan has been ranked the world number one in enacting high quality of universal health care policy for 7 years.)

one of the three primary constitutional methods to oust a sitting unfit president from office. Impeachment/conviction and resignation seem less workable.

This is the Preface of the book:
Inspired by the bond I share with my feline-best-friends and the joy of studying Laozi’s Tao Te Ching/Dao De Jing (道德經), I wrote Meow De Jing (貓的經).

A certain spiritual affinity exists between the nature of felines and the essence of the Tao/Dao, which compelled me to bring this book to life. There are eighty-one chapters in the Dao De Jing. I translated each chapter based on the original text with minor modifications from the feline’s perspective.

The original Dao De Jing text and its English translation are attached in Appendix A, decorated with some of my artwork.

1. the feline's perception and interpretation on Laozi's Dao De Jing (or Tao Te Ching).
2. a translated Laozi's Dao De Jing in English along with the original text.
3. some poems born from sorrow and joy over years of living together.
4. added with my artwork.

Total, 140 pages. This is my 4th published book.

A note for reference:
Today, publishing personal work and projects has become far less complicated, particularly through self-publishing. Most people can now do it—whether they have something meaningful to share or simply wish to make a living from their work.

For most of my career, I used to think that self-publishing was not a real option for my work, particularly for formal academic papers like my these, dissertation and other scholarly work.

My eventual interest in it actually grew out of my students’ learning process. I am obliged to them.

It began with my teaching in 2001 at a local university and later at a technical college. Many of the subjects (e.g., Sociology, Diversity Studies, Development Psychology, Government, and Art) I taught were rather abstract, for examples, social stratification, different forms of social mobility, cultural capital, the myth of meritocracy, the Northern versus Southern Renaissance, modern versus postmodern art, and similar topics. Because of this, Dewey’s “learning by doing” approach proved especially useful—though it sometimes required a bit more time to get job done.

For more than twenty-two years, I guided students through hands-on projects in all of my classes—individual projects as well as collaborative team work. By the end of each semester, students produced tangible pieces such as collages, portfolio books, and other printed works. Some projects were individual, while others were group or capstone projects.

Occasionally, students or groups would give their projects to me as gifts after grading. Over time, I accumulated quite a number of them—eventually more than I had space to store. In 2005, I decided to ask students to begin using design software to compile the semester’s work into digital formats.

I explored various applications and conducted my own experiments to understand their functions. Students were initially free to choose whichever software they preferred. However, technical issues soon arose from using different platforms across multiple classes. Eventually, I decided to adopt Bookemon’s software, which at the time I found relatively user-friendly and reliable.

I devoted about half of a class session to guiding students step by step on how to assemble their work digitally, and I also offered technical support after class when needed.

The software provided an easy tool, free storage, and the ability to publish finished work online. I therefore encouraged students to publish their projects—or other creative work—whenever possible.

Through this process, I became familiar with the platform and its straightforward publishing workflow. As a result, many other online publishing companies seemed less appealing to me.

Moreover, I am not an established writer, and pursuing publication through major publishers would likely involve many hurdles.

I thank this nice tool, which doesn't mean that I endorse this app. It is just a nostalgic feeling reminding of good old days connecting students and me during those teaching-n-learning years.

One more thing: The publishing base fee can be a little bit higher. Most of my previous students came from working-class families (similar to mine,) so printing in physical format can be less affordable - I think.

Also, with the Almighty AI genii roaming everywhere now, the publishing affair is another new story...
