It's very common in the technology and energy industries to refer to talent in terms of A- and B-Players. We know that A-players are the best of the bunch, the top performers, the rockstars while B-Players reside on the second tier along with everyone else.

We all agree that they are somehow special, but how do we really define A-Players?

When I asked this question during our management meeting this past week, a healthy debate on the topic ensued. I was shocked by the vast disparity of opinions. After only a few minutes, it became apparent that we at Cimation and (I assume) others within the industry each have our own opinion about what makes someone an A-Player. Obvious explanations were tossed out there, which ranged from employees that generate the most revenue, to those that work the most hours, or those that consistently demonstrate top technical performance. A few of us believed that A-Players foster successful relationships with key clients while others held that the ability to maintain professionalism in an organization without rules warrants the designation. Others thought that A-Players were simply entrepreneurial individuals who expressed the desire to step into management or other top wealth creating positions.

Of the definitions thrown out there during our meeting, none were quite right. We certainly had a list of potential A-Player attributes going, but it didn’t satiate my appetite for a truly definitive understanding of the term. It would be easy to leave it at that and say, “To each their own,” but that's not acceptable. We need to pinpoint whatever it is that truly sets these individuals apart from the rest of the pack so that we can better identify them during the recruitment process. As we strive to build a company culture that revolves around A-Players, we better understand and agree upon what the hell that means if we're going to hire the right people and ultimately head in the right direction.

Before I build up the A-Player pillar, it is important to know that I don’t think A-Players are perfect. They certainly aren’t superior in all aspects of business and some missteps (albeit infrequent) are expected and acceptable. After all, they’re only human. But where B-Players tend to flounder, A-Players know how to fail smart and learn from their mistakes. Moreover, no two A-Players are ever exactly alike, and each displays qualities that make them special in their own unique way.

But all A-Players have some things in common. In my opinion, and a biased one at that, A-Players are defined less by their tangible performance and more by their DNA. I don’t mean that they are all related, but that they demonstrate innate qualities that simply propel them above the rest. They are naturally great stewards of the company that consistently represent its core values without ever being explicitly shown how. They desire creative challenges but aren’t dissuaded by the unglamorous. They don’t discriminate with their time or focus only on what they are passionate about. Everything (regardless of their level of personal interest) is executed to the best of their ability simply because it is a reflection of their desire to succeed. A-Players despise the status quo, challenge the rules, embrace change, seize opportunities, and disrupt the competition. Regardless of whether their styles are flagrant or conservative, they are judged by their impressive results and not by how those results are achieved.

In short, A-Players are the game-changers, the individuals that positively and dynamically affect the direction of your business.

When I’m seeking to test the above criteria and determine if someone is really an A-Player, I ask myself a simple question: if they threatened to leave my organization, would I do everything in my power to make them stay? If the answer is yes, then I have an A-Player on my hands.

Look around you and ask yourself that question. What type of employees dominate the ranks in your team? If the answer is B-Players, then perhaps it’s time to reevaluate your people strategy and make room for the A game.

On the sunny afternoon of April 26th, Cimation’s Lafayette office hosted its 2nd annual Crawfish Boil. Attendees included clients from various segments of the energy industry along with current employees from the Lafayette, Metairie and Houston offices. Together, they tore through more than 350 pounds of crawfish in a little more than three hours. Impressive work!

Between second and third helpings of crawfish, clients and employees also engaged in some healthy competition, splitting their time between games of horseshoes, bean bag toss and ping pong.

Congratulations to the lucky winners of our prize draw and to our grand prize winner, Mr. Curry Satler of LLOG who walked away with a brand new iPad!

Also, special thanks to Crawdaddy’s On-Site Catering for providing the excellent food and to the local folks from Parish Brewing Co. for bringing choice refreshments.

The Cimation Nation is happy to welcome Jeff Walsh as Director of Industrial IT. Jeff joins us from Harris Corporation and will work out of our Houston office.

Jeff was with Harris Corporation for the past three years. Most recently, he was the Global Engineering Manager at the Harris CapRock Communications Division, where he oversaw the integration of major capital projects, performed due diligence for acquisitions and new ventures and managed the engineering and capture management teams. Jeff brings a wealth of technical and operational experience to our organization and will be focused on managing the growth of the cross-office Industrial IT business unit and supporting the Industrial IT team in pursuing opportunities to broaden its service portfolio. Jeff has a track record of capturing and executing large-scale programs, has extensive international business experience and adds strong commercial and financial skills to our team.

Prior to Harris CapRock, Jeff was with the Harris RF Communications Division as an International Systems Engineer and Stratos Global (Inmarsat) as the Engineering Manager for their systems integration business. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a primary emphasis in Electrical Engineering and secondary emphasis in Atmospheric Science and Mathematics. He is also a Certified Engineer in Training.

When asked about his new role, Jeff said, “I am honored to be a part of Cimation Nation. This is an unbelievably exciting place to work in one of the world’s strongest industries. We’re expanding Industrial IT’s geographic footprint, and I am especially looking forward to working with the team to develop some highly-differentiated offerings that will further reinforce our position as the market leader.”

Welcome, Jeff, to the Cimation team!

With Jeff’s introduction comes the news that Luis Luque will be moving into the position of Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) for Cimation. As the CSO, Luis will be responsible for assisting the executive team with evaluating, developing and communicating strategic initiatives across all of Cimation’s Business Units. Although he will continue to act as a technical advisor on some strategic accounts, Luis will also be focusing on long-term business development opportunities and company culture initiatives.

As Luis steps into his new role, leadership responsibilities for the Industrial IT group will transition into Jeff’s very capable hands. “With his technical expertise and project development experience, I am confident that Jeff will continue to expand Industrial IT’s presence and offerings,” Luis said.

Luis, who cofounded Cimation in 2009, will have a guiding hand in shaping the company’s culture and trajectory. “I am excited to work closely with key clients to map their current and future needs. As ever, collaboration is key, and I will work with Cimation’s all-stars to develop innovative solutions that meet and exceed expectations at every level.”

We’re excited for what the future holds and wish Jeff and Luis every success in their new roles!

A town, a state and a country are reeling from the explosion in West, Texas. What was originally broadcast in the news as a relatively innocuous fire in a Texas fertilizer plant quickly escalated when highly flammable anhydrous ammonia combusted. In terrifying video captured by local passersby, we come to truly understand the magnitude of this event, which has already been compared to the Oklahoma City bombings. In the wake of this disaster, our hearts go out to our fellow Texans who have woken up this morning to a town changed beyond recognition.

We are faced with a list of unanswered questions that will only grow as the investigation and recovery continues in the hours, weeks and months to come. Why were schools, homes and nursing facilities so close to a plant dealing with volatile chemicals? How many people are injured or dead? How will this small Texas town recover from such a devastating blow? And, most importantly and most universally, why did this happen, and how can we keep it from happening again?

The finger pointing has started already, and reports blaming the incident on the plant’s safety and risk management programs (or lack thereof) have already begun to emerge. This morning, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) imposed a fine on the plant in 2006 for failing to implement a risk management plan. Obviously they could have corrected these issues and put risk management protocols in place at some point over the past 7 years. But regardless, it’s clear that something went horribly wrong, and the people of West, Texas are paying the price.

While we wait for official results of the looming formal review, we can’t help but be reminded of the link between automation and safety. Automated safety and control systems remove the potential for human error from potentially dangerous situations, ensuring that any issues are reported and automatically addressed. While these systems can be difficult to design and expensive to implement, it’s much more costly not to mitigate the risks.

Automated systems can also allow plants to employ fewer human resources onsite, which can save lives in case of an accident. With the right systems in place, the same processes that once required in-person vigilance can now be monitored and regulated offsite. In a recent article published in Pipeline Magazine entitled “Pipeline Remote Operations: The Human Factor,” Cimation’s Tom Shephard points out that human responses and limitations (termed ‘human factors’) are “critical component[s] in all safety programs.” Without understanding these limitations or implementing controls that fill in the gaps, issues that compromise safety will inevitably occur.

In the past, we’ve seen several fertilizer plants delay controls upgrades or skip more rigorous safety evaluations. In contrast, the energy industry requires rigorous safety evaluations such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Hazard and Operability Studies to determine potential hazards associated with industrial processes. Once completed, the information gathered through these evaluations results in better, more comprehensive, often automated systems and protocols that ultimately protect employees and bystanders.

Safety should be every company’s first priority, regardless of industry. It just so happens that closing technology gaps often support that goal. Consider a detailed PHA, followed byHAZOP and any process or control related steps like Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), procedure rationalization, control room management and other topics covered in more regulated industries. All of these steps help guarantee safe work practices and undoubtedly could have helped minimize the damage in West.

Although we don’t yet know the cause of the explosion in West, we hope that this tragic event will serve as a wake-up call for the rest of the industry and push safety to the top of everyone’s corporate agenda. In the days to come, we must all work together to guarantee that future tragedies are successfully averted.

Some malware was directly downloaded (hidden in other files) over satellite networks whilst others was brought aboard via workers’ infected laptops and USB drives. As noted by the Shauk “the worst-case scenario could be catastrophic.”

In terms of offshore cybersecurity, things just got real.

Malware can be spread easily online, and it’s important to note that systems are equally vulnerable to accidental and purposeful infection. All it takes is someone downloading an infected email or connecting a virus-laden USB to a computer linked to operation controls. You don’t have to be ‘attacked’ to be vulnerable.

Today’s offshore platforms consist of interconnected systems running, monitoring and recording hundreds or thousands of calibrations each minute. These systems are just as complex as those found in any other industry and just as vulnerable.

Experts believe that the most likely effect of a malware infection is forced downtime off-shore. While this may sound benign, it should not be taken lightly. Just a few hours of forced downtime could mean millions in lost production and targeted attacks could have longer lasting, more devastating consequences.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 40% of all intentional cyberattacks in 2012 were against the energy industry. This all adds up to the possibility of process control and network-connected systems, even those offshore, being specifically targeted. The consequences could be disastrous especially if safety systems or critical process systems are attacked.

In the past, people in the industry assumed offshore oil rigs and platforms were relatively safe in their isolation. After all, what is a better deterrent than miles of open ocean? But as communications systems advance, the isolation of offshore drilling platforms no longer holds the protective power it did in the past. The real challenge is how to prevent unwanted malicious software from affecting the critical systems offshore that have been left to languish until now. Much like their onshore counterparts, operators of rigs and platforms offshore should start working now to identify weaknesses and take a proactive stand against possible infections.

As today's systems become increasingly complex, companies often balk at the associated costs of researching and developing solutions that actually get at the heart of the problem. But the truth is that simply installing firewalls and other related IT security systems are often not defense enough. It takes genuine expertise in the field of cybersecurity to develop specialized solutions that secure valuable infrastructure. These solutions develop from the needs and reality on the ground as well as a deep organizational commitment to IT security. The reality on the ground also means that those in charge of critical assets must look ahead as prevention for future threats is often as important as current ones.

Just weeks ago, Forbes ranked Cimation number 22 on its second annual America’s Most Promising Companies list. Now, we’re accelerating front leg momentum in each of our operating regions by focusing assets on areas of potential growth.

As part of our business strategy, we consolidated our operating offices into two geographical regions, West and East, and created executive level positions to oversee each region. Carl Fangue has been promoted to Vice President of Operations & Strategic Development, Western Region and achieved Partner status in the company. Carl will relocate to Denver to effectively support his new role.

Matt Soulier has been promoted to Director of Operations, New Orleans where he will assume Fangue’s responsibilities for the New Orleans Business Unit.

“We are thrilled Carl will be taking up a key, strategic role in the Western Region. It’s a valuable and rare cross-pollination opportunity that will allow a legacy employee like Carl to impact a new, fast-growing operation,” Cimation CEO Jonathan Klein said. “Following Carl’s relocation, I am confident that the New Orleans operation will continue to flourish under the expert management of Matt Soulier, who has long been a valued member of the Cimation team.”

Fangue echoed Klein’s enthusiasm saying, “I look forward to contributing to Cimation’s expansion in the Western Region. Our Denver-based team, led by Director of Operations Rob Crow, has done a terrific job thus far of supporting our clients’ efforts, recruiting top talent and building the Cimation brand in the West. This strong foundation will be vital to future success as our operations and business development teams build upon our existing reputation and maximize our growth in this key market.”

And Soulier added, “I am excited to serve as Director of Operations for Cimation’s New Orleans office. In the coming weeks, I will work directly with Mr. Fangue to provide a smooth transition for our employees and excellent service to new and existing clients. I anticipate continued growth as we look to capitalize on the resurgent Gulf of Mexico and growing shale developments throughout the region. We will also pursue market diversification by expanding services to include new segments of the energy, chemical and manufacturing industries.”

With talented individuals like Carl and Matt at the helm, we look forward to even greater success in the weeks and months to come!

But this is more than a mere abstract possibility. A recent report published by information security company Mandiant demonstrated that an organized group they call APT1 has infiltrated more than 100 systems in a number of English-speaking countries.

Many assume that it would take enormous funding and sophisticated maneuvering to execute a potentially catastrophic attack.

Their assumptions are wrong.

In an interview with NPR last night, Cimation’s own cyber security engineer Dillon Beresford said that’s simply not the case.

Dillon warned that it doesn’t “take a nation-state and a bunch of funding to do something like this.” All it takes is a lot of creativity, a little bit of time, experience in offensive computing and some engineering know-how.

A few years ago, the Stuxnet virus was used to sabotage one of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Intrigued, Beresford set out to explore vulnerable technologies and quickly found “a lot of trivial bugs that could be exploited” in operating systems safeguarding incredibly sensitive information. And it only took him a few weeks and a few thousand dollars to do it.

This news has terrifying implications for virtually any industry. But the energy industry is particularly vulnerable as it continues to use outdated operating systems to protect critical pieces of national infrastructure.

With a number of exploits already publically available via the Metasploit Framework, it’s relatively easy to break into control systems and wreak havoc. But it’s infinitely more difficult to develop impenetrable systems. According to Dillon, there are a lot of people in the energy industry “pretty much … just waiting for something to happen” instead of looking for existing problems. But that’s not enough anymore.

The recently passed bill entitled “Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity” proves that the US government is cracking down on exploitable gaps. Any company not actively working to protect its sensitive assets against cyberattacks should start soon or get ready for the backlash.

Cybersecurity has just jumped to the top of the corporate agenda. What are you doing to lock down your systems?

During his comments on securing cyberspace, Mr. Obama mentioned that a newly signed executive order put into action some aspects of the controversial CISPA bill that was subsequently resubmitted to congress the day after the speech. The bill passed the House of Representatives in 2012 but was slowed by privacy concerns in Senate proceedings.

On first reading the officially named "Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity," seems like many of the other executive orders signed in both the Bush and Obama administrations. Some may view the order as written to be flexible whilst others could see it as written to invite exploitation.

The order states that over the next 120 days federal agencies lead by the Attorney General, Director of National Intelligence, and the Homeland Security Secretary will all explore the ways in which infrastructure can and could be attacked. This information will then be used to draft a "cybersecurity framework" in order to address any ongoing weaknesses. During this process they will call upon leading firms and examine critical infrastructures with its owners and operators to explore and share knowledge regarding possible implications and attacks.

So, what does this all mean to the energy industry? In short, if you haven't thought of how to protect your own critical infrastructure and the risks of not doing so, you should. It is likely that federal agencies will be asking you those questions. As addressed in the order, this 120 day process includes a "consultative" phase where various federal agencies will meet with the owners of critical infrastructure and consider their advice and guidance. This consultative phase will allow the directors to hear the opinions of the those who own the infrastructure but more importantly the directors will be able to ascertain which groups own infrastructure capable of "catastrophic regional or national effects on public health or safety, economic security, or national security." This will almost certainly include all segments of the energy industry, IT and Operations. These groups should be ready to present their own plans to protect and secure their infrastructures should they be the target of an attack.

As we learn more about the execution of Tuesday's executive order we'll be sure to update you here on the blog. In the meantime, it may be a good time to step back and evaluate your own organization's cybersecurity plan. Does it adequately support your own unique equipment as well as the combined voice of your operators, managers, and the compliance team? What is your plan... 'just in case'?

Cimation was the only consulting company for energy companies ranked in the list’s top 25.

The Forbes America’s Most Promising Companies list is comprised of 100 privately held, high-growth companies with bright futures. Most of the companies ranked on this year’s list, Cimation included, fall into the “technology” category.

To create the list, Forbes reviewed applicants over a six-month period using a third-party data research firm specializing in assessing private companies to refine search. The final assessment was based on growth (both in sales and hiring), quality of management team and investors, margins, market size and key partnerships from that data, as well as interviews with potential list companies to debate merits and blemishes.

Forbes also ranked Cimation Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein number 13 on its America’s Most Promising CEOs Under 35.

These announcements are the latest in a string of honors bestowed upon Cimation that include:

Inc. Magazine ranked Cimation as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in the United States on its sixth annual Inc. 500|5000 list. Inc. ranked Cimation number 707 overall, number 29 in the Energy industry and number 10 in the Houston Metro Area.

Houston Business Journal recognized Cimation as the sixth fastest-growing high-tech business on its annual FastTech 50 list.

Rick Perry delivered his State of the State address to the 83rd Texas Legislature January 29. The roughly 36-minute address highlighted our state’s strong economic outlook.“My fellow Texans, members of the judiciary, of the legislature, distinguished guests, our friends who are here, it is my pleasure to report that the state of our state is stronger than ever,” said Perry to an outburst of applause. “We remain the nation’s prime destination for employers and job-seekers alike…hard working Texans are today turning their dreams into realities.”

The address sounded tailor-made for business leaders and CEOs, commented Austin Business Journal Contributing Writer James Jeffrey. Jeffrey outlined the following business-related points, among others, Gov. Perry made in his address:

Texas remains the nation’s prime destination for employers and employees.

Government bureaucracy doesn’t stimulate the economy, it merely gets in the way, and employers are given the freedom to expand in Texas.

A combination of Texas’ economic climate and Texans’ work ethic is drawing companies to the state. Inroads have been made attracting big technology companies, including Apple Inc. and Electronic Arts Inc.

Other states are taking notice of Texas’ economic strategy and trying to imitate.

Texas is creating all types of jobs—including 500,000 private sector jobs in the last two years—and had the fastest rate of job growth in the country for the last 10 years. “If you want to be a CEO someday, then Texas is the place to start.”

Texas was the place to start for contemporary technology solutions firm Cimation. Operating independently since January 2009, spinning off Audubon Engineering’s Automation Department in New Orleans, Cimation has grown into a global leader in automation, industrial IT and enterprise data solutions.

Cimation is one of the fastest growing privately held companies in the United States, as ranked by Inc. Magazine, and its leaders, including Cimation Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein, are recognized as enterprising and accomplished professionals in the energy industry and beyond.

Most recently, Jonathan Klein was recognized by Forbes as one of America’s most promising CEOs under 35. Stay tuned to our blog for another exciting achievement from the Cimation team coming soon!

The OGM, an energy media publication, recently dubbed Cimation CEO, Jonathan Klein, an enterprising young professional who has achieved levels of success that are motivating, inspiring, and rewarding with a spotlight article in the “Up & Coming” section of its winter 2012 magazine. The article comes just months after Inc. Magazine ranked Cimation as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in the United States.

According to its website, “The OGM is inspired and advanced by respected leaders of innovation, vision and a vast consciousness of the energy industry and the ongoing intricacies of influential global players.” The OGM’s “Up & Coming” spotlight showcases emerging Millennial Generation leaders making a difference in the energy industry who are often overshadowed by established, well-known professionals.

In the article, Klein details his path to co-founding Cimation in 2009 as well as his roles in the company today, which include shaping the overall vision, strategic planning,, recruiting key talent, overseeing business development, marketing, and operations. The questions Klein answered for the article cover everything from career milestones and role models to favorite social media platforms and mobile phone apps.

“I never envisioned myself ending up in a career in Energy,” admitted Klein in a response to the question, “Were you always interested in a career in Energy?” He continued, “When I was in college studying electrical engineering, my passion for electronics led me to believe I would go into the field of integrated circuit design. A slow economy landed me a job at an oil and gas engineering firm shortly after graduation. I have a hard time imagining an industry more conducive to innovation with the economics to support it than this industry.”And though Klein didn’t foresee himself working in the energy industry back in college, leading the talented Cimation team is exactly where he wants to be.

“I love that I get to lead a dynamic company that caters to an industry that always presents new and exciting challenges,” he said. “I surround myself with incredibly smart and ambitious people who aspire to achieve similar goals. I can’t imagine being part of anything more rewarding than my experience at Cimation.”

With the article, Klein joined the ranks of other young professionals, including Cenovus Energy’s Mark Blackwell, Nalco Energy Services’ Melissa Leon and PanGeo Subsea’s Christina Penney, among others.

To see the full spotlight article and vote for Jonathan Klein, declaring your appreciation for the difference he’s making in the energy industry, click here.

The Case Application titled, Web-based SCADA Gathers More Fans, highlights how organizations, such as Cimation, are using cloud computing and Ethernet radios to refine best practices used in SCADA. Specifically related to Cimation, Stock shared how the industry is shifting away from serial radios and moving towards Ethernet IP radios for communication to remote sites. According to Stock, “The robustness of the Ethernet radio makes it possible to incorporate new technologies into the SCADA network.” Additionally he is seeing some of his clients adding remote video monitoring capabilities and embedding process control video images into their HMI graphics.

California Polytechnic State University also uses radio communication as a critical component of their SCADA systems. The university’s SCADA systems track water levels in canals used for supplying water to farms. The operators of these systems are often remote and this technology enables real-time access to the HMI (Human Machine Interfaces) via a laptop or handheld device. Cal Poly uses Web-based SCADA for all of its modernization projects

“Electronics eventually go bad,” said Charles Burt, Ph.D., PE, chairman of the Cal Poly Irrigation Training and Research Center. “So, I just don’t believe in automating things without being able to monitor them remotely and change target values.”

The Automation World article also discusses several key uses of Web-based technology in automation, including connecting networks and control rooms with remote locations, cloud-based software, and the resolution of industry pain points such as software licensing and integration of legacy systems.

Most often Terminal Automation Systems (TAS) are installed at bulk loading terminals to control HMI devices and to communicate with field devices such as weigh scales, PLCs, DCSs, Flow Computers and Batch Controllers/Electronic Presets. Modern TASs control activities and processes from vehicle entry into the terminal to vehicle exit with a Bill of Lading (BOL). Many communicate with ERP systems such as SAP or JDE for order downloads and transaction uploads. Most terminals have Automating Tank Guaging Systems (ATG) tied into TAS, providing a means to compare and reconcile tank level changes to product transfers at the load rack.

We have created a short whitepaper on Terminal Automation to help you understand Terminal Automation Systems, how they fit in with other control, automation and ERP systems, and what their roles are in a variety of midstream and downstream applications. In this whitepaper, you will learn about:

Common applications in which TAS plays an important role

Work flow showing how TAS systems fit into the overall information scheme for oil and gas production and transportation

TAS system capabilities and benefits

Examples from Cimation's terminal automation projects

A few of these times the client is looking to change from one manufacturer to another. So what are some of the factors that need to be considered:

Standardization

We all know about standardization within the work place, especially anyone who has worked in maintenance. No one wants to carry five wrenches out to a site to fix a piece of equipment that could have been designed to use one wrench. This is the same for PLCs. If a facility is already standardized on one manufacturer, when you change, you will have additional costs for software and potential training. If you will be helping to standardize, you may be able to reduce the software needed, which in the long run will save operational costs.

Software

Do you need additional software for this new processor? New or upgraded software can offer you more functionality. It may also allow you to install the software on off-the-shelf computers. Older series PLC programs many times will not run on today's Windows XP or Windows 7 PC's. By upgrading you may be able to reduce the amount of specialized hardware you need to support your automation system.

The cost of software and/or licenses is a large cost many clients do not understand. When switching from one brand to another your license will not transfer and very rarely will you ever get money back from your previously purchased software. However some manufacturers offer the option to upgrade your software for a reduced price if you own a previous version. This allows them to migrate you to a product they spend more resources supporting and can provide you with better service. It's a win, win for everyone.

Training

Many of the manufacturers use different standards for their processors. Some have different communication protocols and others have different tag database designs. The cost of training an employee to be proficient with this new software may need to be considered.

Reprogramming

Most manufacturers offer a migration path for their product line, and in doing so they may have created a tool to help migrate from one line of software to the next level. This can be a large cost-saving option when a client is looking to migrate to a newer processor. However this does not normally work across manufacturers. So if you change from a Allen Bradley to a GE PLC you are going to have to manually recreate the code. There are very few short cuts that can be taken. Finding someone that is fluent in both manufacturer's codes and software structure is going to be crucial for a client to keep the reprogramming cost as low as possible.

Functionality

If anyone tells you that all PLCs are the same, they are trying to fool you. PLCs and the newer PACs are just like automobiles. There are several great manufacturers, each offering different models, and within those models they offer different options. When trying to pick the best PLC or PAC for your application, nothing is more important than making sure it has the functionality needed for your operation today and a few years from now. PLCs are lasting longer these days. If you have a plan to add to this process within 5 years, make sure the PLC is ready for your long term goals. Spending a little more now can save you a lot more later.

Support

Several times I have arrived on job sites to find that clients have allowed someone to install a PLC brand that very few people support, and the support from the manufacturer is limited. If you have a critical process and you want to maintain the highest level of uptime, make sure you have multiple people who can support you during your emergency. Switching to a cheaper brand sometimes is not so cheap in the long run. Make sure you switch to a brand that provides you with what you need to stay safe and keeps your operation profitable.

Cost

Cost is one of the biggest factors in any project. Companies and vendors need to be aware of both the hard dollar amount AND the soft tangible items that may not have been considered or discussed. The above highlights have covered some of the hard dollar discussion points as well as some of the other factors that may add value to a project and the long-range goals for your company.

We’ve all heard that the IP built into an automation system results in increased value over time. Put another way, the date of purchase is the least expensive that control system will ever be. I hope this helps you understand that that rule isn’t hard and fast and that contemporary solutions are driving costs down substantially. We would be happy to speak with you regarding your needs (without the pressure of a software vendor!) and help write a continuity plan if it’s warranted.

The goal of SEMS is to improve the safety of oil and gas operations by limiting the number of accidents. SEMS focuses on poor performance, its influences on accidents, the value of safety, and environmental protection. SEMS consists of 13 elements that need to be implemented. Each element has its own procedures to follow under specific guidelines. SEMS also requires documentation that needs to be readily available for auditors. If documentation is not managed effectively and required documentation is misplaced, a company can be penalized. If SEMS is restructured or modified in the future, companies will need to be proactive and adapt to these changes quickly. It can be complex and costly to follow these Safety and Federal Regulations without a working, concrete system.

With modern automation technology and innovation, companies can successfully streamline and implement a SEMS into their business processes. By using the latest technologies and automating your SEMS management program you can assure your company:

Will be compliant within federal rules and regulations

Enhance the value of safety in oil & gas operations

Reduce operating cost by streamlining your business processes related to SEMS management

Sustain a competitive advantage in the 0il and Gas industry

Increase the protection of the marine environment

Limit the amount of accidents influenced by human behavior

How the thieves gained entry and got away with the paintings is certainly the stuff of a good movie, but what’s the relevance to the Oil and Gas Industry? Read on.

First, the thieves gained entry into the gallery through the most vulnerable section of the gallery shop. It never dawned on the Gallery owner his shop was so exposed to a simple break-in until he realized the thieves used a simple reciprocating saw to cut a 4 foot square hole in the shop’s shingled roof. To the untrained eye the roof looked solid and impenetrable. Living with something day in and day out fools us into a false sense of security, drops our guard and hinders a search to reinforce the security and reputation of our business.

After cutting the hole in the roof, the burglars set off the art Gallery’s sophisticated alarm system that reported directly to the police. The alarm went off on a Saturday morning. Officers arrived, notified the gallery’s owners and everything checked out. All art was in its place. The professional bandits kept the alarm going off throughout the weekend. The police would come when the alarm went off and all was good. After this kept happening over and over, it was concluded the security system was malfunctioning and the alarm was ignored for the rest of the weekend.

On that Sunday evening, when all was considered normal and secure with the Gallery despite the alarm and all art work was accounted for, the thieves slipped through the square hole. Once in, they cut the paintings from their frames rolled up the two pieces of brilliantly painted canvas worth 5 million dollars and slipped away into the night.

Lessons to be Learned in Our Industry

The Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) under the jurisdiction of the DOT states; “Pipelines are the safest and most cost effective means to transport the extraordinary volumes of natural gas and hazardous liquid products that fuel our economy”. That statement may be true, but it's not a guarantee. Energy companies and consultants alike must ask some difficult questions. Can someone cut through our plywood roof? Do we have safety issues that are covered by the tar and shingles of our business? Do we have control and operational rooms delivering alarms without meaning or alarms not meaning what they say?

Like the art gallery, the oil and gas industry is not about looking safe. It is about being safe. It is not about complying with PHMSA requirements because we have to, but about ethics and best practice because we want to. Best practice based on individual operational requirements is the best measure of PHMSA compliance. It is about our future. It is the safeguarding of our energy product.

After making the tough decision to turn down some amazing opportunities with other companies near the top of the Inc. 500 list and on the Fortune 500 list, I can confidently say that I’m happy with my decision!

No stranger to the Inc. 500|5000 list, Cimation is a wonderful place to learn and test truly contemporary sales and management philosophies. By delegating authority throughout the organization, our management team has enabled us to be a top performing firm. In fact, our peers are, in many cases, our clients when it comes to growth and economic impact. Since I joined we’ve added nearly 100 jobs to the economy in five different US cities, providing a wide variety of energy industry solutions. I’m proud of that accomplishment and hope to provide us with enough growth to double that in the next year.

All this excitement made me think what our special sauce is. I certainly touched on it in the previous paragraph. Many of our competitors approach management and client relations from a position of power or hierarchy. I believe Cimation is unique in our style of partnering with our employees and affording them opportunities to learn and grow while allowing them a direct line of influence to management. We also earnestly partner with our clients to drive our strategy and create high permission relationships, allowing us to share each other’s goals and address them collaboratively.

We have many exciting developments on the horizon. For the sales organization, I can state that our clients, partners, and employees can expect continued and expanded insights into the market and cross-pollination of best practices. Cimation has committed to a value for time based approach with our sales team, meaning that the people who interact with our team will be challenged and exposed to new and different ideas that may map to increased value. We will expand our reach and continue to focus on bringing fresh, high value ideas to clients, partners, and employees.

Magazine recently ranked Cimation as one of the fastest growing, privately held companies in the United States in its annual Inc. 500|5000 list. Cimation ranked #707 overall, #29 in the Energy industry, and #10 in Houston. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent entrepreneurs.

The 2012 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2008 to 2011. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2008. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2011. The minimum revenue required for 2008 is $100,000; the minimum for 2011 is $2 million.

"We are proud of our achievements this year and grateful to our clients for making this award possible," said Jonathan Klein, Cimation's CEO. "As great as it is to be nationally recognized for our financial performance, we are most proud to have generated this revenue by working safely. Over 400,000 hours were executed since our inception with zero recordable incidents."

In a stagnant economic environment, median growth rate of 2012 Inc. 500|5000 companies remains an impressive 97 percent. The companies on this year’s list report having created over 400,000 jobs in the past three years, and aggregate revenue among the honorees reached $299 billion.

"Now, more than ever, we depend on Inc. 500/5000 companies to spur innovation, provide jobs, and drive the economy forward. Growth companies, not large corporations, are where the action is,” says Inc. Editor Eric Schurenberg.

Cimation's growth strategy is simple. Cimation loves ambitious people who have a bias for action and solving problems, and enjoy working with the smartest people in the Energy market. We actively recruit from the technology sector and compete with companies like Google for truly remarkable talent. People who want to change the industry, indeed the world, work for Cimation.
