Valentine's Day Dance at Cooper Creek in Blue Ash

The new Cooper Creek facility in Blue Ash is finally open. It's the new community banquet facility and golf clubhouse. I toured it a few days ago and it gorgeous!

The banquet facility has a large dance floor, a great bar, high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with a beautiful view of the golf course.

You can spend an evening at Cooper Creek this Valentine's Day at it's inaugural Dine, Dance and Romance evening on Feb. 11. Tickets are $50 a person, and the event will be emceed by 103.5 WGRR's Chris and Janeen. There will dinner, drinks and dancing as well as door prizes from Bloomin Garden Centre.

As a writer it might go without saying that I love to read. But I will say it anyway: I love to read. I always find great deals on used books and more at my local library sale in Sharonville. There are library sales all across Cincinnati and Hamilton county throughout the year sponsored by Friends of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The Friends is an organization of local folks who support the libraries through different events and programs. You can connect with the Friends on Facebook.

The first round of sales start in a week. The Winter Warehouse Sale is at Jan. 12-15 at the Friends Warehouse on 8456 Vine St., in Hartwell.

Blue Ash unveils prospective new names for Airport Park

Blue Ash recently sent out an email survey asking for citizen input on the planned Airport Park at the corner of Reed Hartman and Glendale Milford. The survey lists several names to choose from, and also allows folks to suggest their own name. The survey is on the Blue Ash website.

The choices are:

"Blue Ash Park": Simple and descriptive name that describes the location of the park

"Crossroads Park of Blue Ash": Represents the location of the park at the crossroads of Glendale-Milford and Reed Hartman Highway

"Blue Ash Central Park": Centrally located in the heart of Blue Ash

"Watson's Aviation Park": Commemorating the history of Aviation in Blue Ash (Park Watson Airport)

"Blue Ash Airport Park": Represents the history of the park land, and is also what the proposed park has been referred to as throughout the planning process

"Blue Ash Summit Park": The property where the park is being developed is one of the highest points in Hamilton County

"Landings Regional Park in Blue Ash": A combination of Airport history and the regional asset the park will provide to the area

"Blue Ash Legacy Park": Refers to the history of the property

"Blue Ash Generations Park": A park built for all generations, including future generations

Need ideas for last-minute dinner reservations for New Year's Eve in Cincy?

Some people are just procrastinators right? Well, it's not too late to find a spot to eat on New Year's Eve in Cincinnati, in the city or in the suburbs. Open Table has a list of restaurants that are still taking reservations for New Year's Eve, but Hurry! They might not last long. Some of the suburban spots include: 20 Brix in Milford, Brown Dog Cafe and El Pueblo in Blue Ash, Cafe Bella in Mason, The Golden Lamb in Lebanon and Vito's Cafe (with a singing waitstaff) in Ft. Thomas, Ky. I've either been to these places or have heard good things about them.

Get --and Give-- with Deals that Give Back

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Local Great Deals, a Cincinnati-based company that offers online coupons for local businesses. The company has also gotten into the "Daily Deal" business -- with a twist -- through Deals that Give Back.

Deals that Give Back works, in part, like Groupon or Living Social, where you can purchase a coupon for local services, products, food, etc., for 50 percent off or more. But as its name implies, Deals that Give Back also offers a little something different. 10 percent of your purchase goes to a local nonprofit that you can choose (from a provided list).

Each day Deals that Give Back features an area nonprofit along with the deal. So you get a little, and give a little! Deals that Give Back is also available in Columbus and Dayton, in addition to several other cities.

New Year's Eve is one of the few adults-only nights for me and the hubs. Sometime we stay in, sometimes we just go out for dinner. Other times we make a party night with friends out of it. There are tons of ways – at different price points – to ring in 2012 across Cincinnati.

I'm going to focus on events for couples, but if you're looking to include the kids, hop over to this Family Friendly Cincinnati post.

My morning volunteering for Operation Give Back Holiday Store for Suburban families in need

Not every family that lives in the Cincinnati suburbs is wealthy or privileged. There are many families struggling to provide their families with basic necessities like food and warm clothes. For many of them it would be almost impossible to buy much for their kids this holiday season.

There are small nonprofits in the 'burbs that work to help meet those families needs, and one of those is Operation Give Back in Blue Ash. I first found out about Operation Give Back late last year when I wrote a small article about their annual Community Holiday Store for the Blue Ash Economic Development newsletter. This year, I decided to volunteer to help sort and display items for the store.

Operation Give Back, founded by husband and wife Lee & Wendetta Langston, organizes this annual holiday store for families in the Sycamore School District. It's a small operation targeted to specific Sycamore Community zip codes (45249, 45241, 45242, 45243 Only). With a donation of $5 per family, each family can "shop" at the Holiday Store. They can get NEW toys, clothes, foods, toiletries, jackets, socks, toys and sweaters for the family. There also is a little area where kids can shop for the parents as well.

The holiday store has actually grown so successful that folks must register beforehand to shop. (Although they try to accommodate as many people as possible, regardless.) This year's store will be Dec. 16, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The store will be opened to the wider public on Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year's store is in a new location 10891 Millington Court Blue Ash, OH 45242.

In addition to the store Operation Give Back tutors kids year round, and does other things for the community. You can find more about it here.

At this point Operation Give Back is still looking for volunteers to sort, you can sign up here. They are also still in need of certain donations of NEW items including:

Paper Products
Toys
Non Perishable Food (esp. cereal)
Toletries
Blankets
$5 gift cards (to be given to families and offset their required $5 donation.)

This is the year that I plan to finally make it to the Cincinnati Zoo's PNC Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights has more than 2 million LED Lights, and themed areas from FAIRYLAND and CANDY CANE FOREST to TWINKLE TRAIL and LOLLIPOP LANE.

EnterTrainment Junction Christmas Groupon this weekend

Groupon has a deal for EnterTrainment Junction in West Chester, the indoor train museum. You can can get up to 56 percent of admission for one or four people. My family went to the Christmas at the Junction a few years back, and it was cute. There is a Christmas-themed train display, and kids can see Santa and Mrs. Claus too. If I remember correctly, we even got some cookies!

If you haven't been there yet and have been thinking about checking it out, this would be a good time to do it. I would suggest it if you have younger children (8 or under) or children of any age who are REALLY into trains. And you can get the Groupon here. Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad's NorthPole Express starts Nov. 26

The LM&M Railroad's North Pole Express is a holiday tradition for families across the tri-state. This year the one-hour and 45-minute event starts the weekend of Nov. 26-27 and runs through several weekends through the holidays.

The train ride starts at the Lebanon Station (in downtown Lebanon) with a 30-minute ride to LM&M Junction. There your family has 45 minutes to visit Santa, Mrs. Claus and their Elves and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, which are part of the ticket price. You'll reboard the train and head back to Lebanon Station.

Boarding starts 10 minutes before the train departs. Since it's cold, you'll want to dress warmly, but the train is heated. However, there are no restrooms on the train. Good to know! Find out more about LM&M Railroad.

New ReUse Center opens in Erlanger

A third ReUse Center has just opened in Erlanger. The nonprofit ReUse shops sells building materials that were headed for the landfill at great prices. There are two other shops, in Cincinnati and Covington, as well. The ReUse Center deconstructs old homes, buildings, and warehouses, reclaims building materials and gets them in sell worthy shape.

Some of what they sell includes kitchen cabinets, sinks, copper pipes, windows, doors, water heaters and plumbing fixtures. They also get some new materials from local builders who donate them. Take a look at some of what they sell here.

The Erlanger shop is at is 3126 Dixie Hwy Erlanger, KY 41018, and the entrance is off Montgomery Road. The shops are open 9-5 weekdays and 9-2 Saturdays. You can also connect with the shops on Facebook. There are separate FB pages for the Cincinnati, Covington and Erlanger shops.

Get free tickets to Duke Energy Holiday Train Display

You might have already heard that this year's Duke Energy Holiday Train Display has moved from downtown over to the Cincinnati Museum Center. After 65 years of holding the free event downtown, Duke announced the Holiday Train display will now be part of the Museum Center's Holiday Junction. Duke says they were running out of room for the lobby for the trains, and were having problems finding volunteers and employes to set up the display and run the trains in recent years.

The display runs now through Jan. 1, 2012.

Though the Duke display has historically been free, the Museum Center does have a All Museums admittance fee ($12.50 for adults and $8.50 for children. It also costs $6 dollars per vehicle to park. But there are a couple of ways you can save. If you're a Duke Customer you can get four vouchers (two adults, and two children) and see the trains. The voucher is good until Dec. 24. You can cut out the parking costs by taking a Free shuttle from Westin Hotel on Fifth Street every 20 minutes to the Museum Center. If you want to drive, parking goes down to $4 after 4:30, which could work out for a Friday visit when the center keeps later hours. But I would suggest making a day of it checking out all the holiday happenings downtown, and heading over to the display!

You should have gotten your vouchers through Duke already, but if you haven't go here to request them.

I'm on a budget, but still like to go out every once and a while to eat, shop, or get my hair done. I'm an avid couponer, and the money I save clipping lets me stretch my budget just enough to afford those extras. There are all kinds of deal sites on the web, and online coupons for groceries out there, but you might not know about the deal site Local Great Deals, based right here in Cincinnati where you can get free coupons for some pretty fun stuff.

Like I mentioned, Local Great Deals is based in Cincinnati, but they have deal sites devoted to Dayton, Columbus and points north, as well as in Louisville and Lexington in my home state of Kentucky. They're actually in more than 65 metro areas nationwide, and are still growing.

If you peruse your city's site, you can find free coupons for restaurants, spas, entertainment destinations, retail shops, fitness classes and more. The coupons range from BOGOs, 10 to 50 percent of products and services, and even a few freebies here and there.

The site is easy to navigate and coupons ares sorted by service or product type, so it doesn't take long to zero in on the kinds of deals you are looking for.

Do you want to Shop Local during the holidays, but aren't sure what's exactly out there, what products are available and where to start?

Well the blogging community has some resources for you. And whether you're an old pro or just getting into the Shop Local movement, there are a couple places you can turn. Buy Cincy, dedicated to promoting independent Cincinnati businesses, will hold its annual Cincinnati Unchained event Saturday Nov. 19 where you can get discounts and deals at 70 independently owned Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area businesses. You can even plan the day by going here and looking at all the participating shops, and that day's deals.

Business owners and shoppers alike will want to get connected to Family Friendly Cincinnati's Shop Local Holiday Guide, which is in the process of being put together. Business Owners can get into the Shop Local Holiday Guide online. It will be distributed the week of Nov. 21 through the Family Friendly Cincinnati website and an eblast to its email subscribers (you can sign up for FFC emails though the main site).

Every year I say I'm gonna go, but this year I am gonna go. The Cincinnati Parks' Balluminaria in Eden Park has become a beautiful fall tradition, and the shots of the lighted up balloons around the park's Mirror Lake always make me regret not making it.

There were rumblings that the event would be cancelled this year but a sponsorship by Fifth Third Bank is keeping it going. This year's Balluminaria is Saturday, Nov. 19 from, 4-6 p.m. The event is FREE, but bring a little change if you want to grab a hot chocolate and some eats. You can follow the Balluminaria on Facebook too!

If you haven't been before it's a fun time. Every year the Mt. Washington Community Council holds a post-Halloween "Pumpkin Chuck" where they catapult old pumpkins in Stanbery Park. The last time I was there you paid to either have your own pumpkin chucked or paid a little more for a provided pumpkin.

Animals eat the pumpkiny remains that night and then folks come back the following day to clear out anything left. In addition to the chuckin' there are also hot drinks, baked goods and other fun stuff for sale. I think I and the husband will head out there this year!

The Pumpkin Chuck start is Nov. 5 from noon to 5 p.m.

This is the last weekend to have the bejeebuz scared out of you at the Kings Island Halloween Haunt. The last night is Saturday Oct. 29, from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. This is grown up stuff, they actually recommend you NOT bring kids under 13 to this one. You can get tickets online for $24.99. BOO :)

New Cincinnati Bloggers Wiki

Over the weekend I created a wiki for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky bloggers. I'm not sure where it will lead, but for the time being I'd like you to contribute by adding your own blog to the wiki. I set up a list where you can post a link to your blog, and contact info, by subject. I think that will make it useful for bloggers and folks looking for Cincinnati bloggers.

Cincinnati Chocolate Festival this weekend. Nom. Nom.

The Cincinnati Chocolate Festival is back this year, Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Cintas Center at Xavier University. It will feature more than 40 tasty vendors, celebrity chef demos, and vendor and amateur competitions.

Vendors include Bella Luna, Aglamesis, Haute Chocolates, Queen City Cookies, Esther Price, Ruth Hunt Candy, Spice & Tea Exchange and BonBonnerie.

The yummy proceeds go to a good cause: the Isaac M. Wise Temple Sisterhood whose projects include: YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, South Avondale School, the Interfaith Hospitality Network and more.

You can get tickets at Kroger for $5 in advance or $7 at the door. You can also stay connected with the Festival organizers through Facebook.
