Voter Registration Drive

Hello Fellow Democrats!

Our chapter has been inactive recently and I am on a mission to change that, starting with a voter registration and membership drive March 14 -16 (Tuesday - Thursday), from 11 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm.

The registration table will be located just outside of the cafeteria. If any of you could help out or know of anyone who would like to join or register to vote (deadline to register for the May primary election is April 3rd), send them my way.

I have invited elected officials and candidates to participate in the registration drive. Please stop by the table to show your support and to share any ideas you may have for the coming year.

What's Happening with the College Dems this Month

At our April 27th meeting, our member unanimously voted to renew the terms for both he President and Vice-President since there were no other students running for either office. Both Ashley and I thank you for your support and look forward to serving you for another exciting year.

With this new term comes newly appointed positions. I am proud to announce Margaret Mahoney as our new Chief of Staff. She brings a new and energetic voice to our organization and I look forward to working with her. Nicholas Gesell has returned to his position as Membership Director. He plans on rejuvenating our members and increasing the size of our organization. His experience here on campus will be a great asset to us.

We are still looking for a new Communication��s Director. This position is vital in running an effective and well-organized College Democrats chapter. Our communications director will be responsible for creating and hanging-up posters, post entries on our official blog, handle public relations and media, coordinate letter writing campaigns and op-eds with members, and much more. If you are interested in filling this position, please stop by our office or email Margaret or myself.

On Thursday May 19th, Cincinnati State will be holding a Club and Organization fair. We will be having a table from 11:00AM to 2:00PM outside in the courtyard near the ATLC. There we will be running a voter registration drive, recruiting members, and raising funds to support our organization. Please mark your calendar and plan to come out and show your support for the Democrats on campus.

I am encouraging all of our members to volunteer on a local political campaign or for the Hamilton County Democratic Party. Our number one goal as College Democrats is to get more Democrats elected. The Hamilton County Democratic Party, Cincinnati State College Dems and our Deans Councilwoman Laketa Cole and Tom Conway are proud to announce the 2005 Democratic Campaign School.

When: April 16th 2005, 8:00am-4:00pm
Where: Cincinnati State College
Who should attend?

Campaign School is designed for those who would like to work as a campaign staff member, volunteer on a campaign, or are simply interested in learning more about campaigns and elections as well as those running for office or thinking of running for office.

Schedule:

8:00-8:30         Registration & Breakfast
8:30-8:45         Welcome
8:45-9:15         Guest Speaker
9:30-10:15       Breakout session 1 (45 min)
10:30-11:15     Breakout session 2 (45min)
11:30-12:30     Lunch & Panel Discussion

Fee: $25.00 or $10.00 with a student ID (this charge is designed only to cover the cost of course materials and meals)

Registration:

Registration is limited to 220 participants and is on a “first come first serve” basis (your seat will not be held until your registration fee is received). No refunds will be given since the fee is only designed to cover the cost of the event and expenses will be incurred regardless of “no-shows.”

Or send a check payable to the Hamilton County Democratic Party, 615 Main St 2nd Floor, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Please write “campaign school” in the memo section of your check. A confirmation will be mailed to you.

Curriculum:

Our Featured Morning Speaker will be Mike Ford, a nationally recognized political consultant who has been involved in numerous campaigns across the country including consulting for Jerry Springer. Students will also hear from several successful Campaign Managers and Candidates.

Each track, consisting of four break-out sessions, is designed around the four main elements of a campaign. Students may attend all four classes within a track or mix and match classes that suit their particular interests.

Take action to increase student aid funding this week!

This week, Congress is voting on student aid funding for next year. Without change, the proposed budget would leave college students behind-- the proposed budget would reduce funding for federal student aid at a time in which students are facing higher tuitions and fewer resources from the states.

TODAY, the Senate will vote on an amendment to increase federal student aid funding. This amendment, sponsored by Senator Kennedy, would not only restore funding for cut student aid, but it would increase the Pell Grant maximum award, which has received no increases for the last three years.

Your Senators have the opportunity to vote to increase Pell Grant funding in the budget this week, which would help to ensure that college students get the aid they need next year. The amendment comes up for a vote on Wednesday, so we need your help right away to make sure it passes!

Mayoral Debate, St. Patrick's Day, and Mark Mallory

Tomorrow, March 10, the Democratic Forum will be hosting the first Democratic Mayoral Debate. At this Forum meeting each candidate will give a brief address of their vision for building the Democratic Party and strengthening the City of Cincinnati. Following, each will respond to questions from a panel representing this area's democratic groups. After this Q & A session, there will be an open floor mic to field questions from the audience. The event starts at 7:00PM at the 20th Century Theater, 3021 Madison Road, in Oakley. (If you are interested in volunteering at the event, please call Stan Hetzman at 513-325-6608).

On Sunday, March 13, Cincinnati will being celebrating St. Patrick's Day with its annual parade. Several Democratic candidates will be marching and would like you to march with them. The 2006 Bush Budget: Breaks Promises, Targets Tax Increases onto College Students, Forces Students to Pay More for College

- President Bush shortchanges education for the fourth year in a row cuts education funding. With his first budget of his second term, President Bush proposes to cut funding for the Department of Education by $530 million, despite increasing college costs and the challenging academic requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act. President Bush also eliminates dozens of key programs, reducing the Federal investment in education by over $4.2 billion. - President Bush breaks promise on Pell Scholarships again falling nearly $1,000 short of his $5,100 pledge. President Bush's Budget breaks his promise to provide a $5,100 Pell scholarship, only increasing the maximum Pell by $100 this year, falling nearly $1,000 short of his promise to students. - President Bush forces millions of low and middle-income students to pay thousands more for their college loans. The Bush budget eliminates the current low fixed consolidation rate benefit. According to the non-partisan Congressional Research Service (CRS), this change will force the typical student borrower to pay $5,500 more for his college loans. - The Bush budget jeopardizes college attendance for more than 1 million students, while increasing the cost of college for teachers, military service members and law enforcement officers. The President's FY 06 budget eliminates the GEAR UP, Talent Search and Upward Bound programs which ensure that millions of high risk students succeed in high school and move on to college. In addition, despite skyrocketing loan debt President Bush abolishes loan forgiveness for teachers, military service members and law enforcement officers by eliminating the Perkins Loan cancellation program. - President Bush eliminates vocational education funding, destroying innovative career and technical education programs for students attending high school and community college. The FY 06 Budget Request brings the total amount that President Bush has proposed to cut from job training and vocational education programs since he took office to $3.35 billion. CAMPAIGN LESSONS LEARNED

The Progressive Alliance of Southwest Ohio invites you to review with us the 2004 presidential election campaign. Thousands of us in the greater Cincinnati area worked on the campaign in many roles. It is important to record what we learned from this effort. Many of us who worked on this campaign believe we should expand this work to win in 2006 and 2008. The review will produce a memo to future campaigns summarizing what worked, what didn't work and recommendations we can make for the future.

THE PANEL will address three questions from different perspectives:
What went well
What didn't work or was problematic
What we can do better in future campaigns

Attendees will then have an opportunity to address these same questions as they share their experiences and questions in plenary session and small groups.

Points of consensus will be highlighted. Results of this process will be reviewed and collated into a "Memo to Future Campaigns" in several forms:

Letters to the DNC, HCDP, State Democratic Party and other organizations
"Campaign Lessons Learned" booklet
Analysis and summary of Campaign Experience Questionnaires
Archive of the 2004 Kerry Campaign materials
