When he encounters migrants Rosa (Teresa Ruiz) and her 11-year-old son Miguel (Jacob Perez) running from drug cartel assassins, more trouble comes his way. Promising Rosa he will get Miguel to relatives in Chicago, the hardened Hanson and the young fugitive reluctantly take a dangerous road trip. An unlikely friendship develops as the killers, led by relentless Mauricio (Juan Pablo Raba), get closer.

With Liam Neeson the main attraction, a full-blown action thriller is expected. But this latest attempt at making a modern western is surprisingly short on action and thrills. Director Robert Lorenz, who helmed the Clint Eastwood baseball drama "Trouble with the Curve", spends most of this film's length on drama and emotion. Mr. Neeson is up to the task, but this is not what the fans look forward to with a title like "The Marksman". The screenplay by Chris Charles, Danny Kravitz and Lorenz is predictable from beginning to end - with clichés piled on thick. The dark tale of pursuit has many deaths, but still feels tame. In the movie's defense, a few bursts of violence and the final confrontation are done well. Liam Neeson and young Jacob Perez carry most of the scenes believably. The able supporting cast fills the screen with vicious killers and other stock characters. Juan Pablo Raba is easy to hate as the lead assassin. Katheryn Winnick, a commanding presence as Lagertha on TV's "Vikings", is underused as Jim's step-daughter Sarah - a Border Patrol agent who tries to help the hunted duo. On the plus side, cinematographer Mark Patten makes good use of the New Mexico and Ohio location sceneries. Director Lorenz appears to be trying to make an Eastwood western (Clint can be spotted here on a background television in "Hang 'Em High" - a good oater). Sadly, "The Marksman" misses the bull's-eye. (2/5 CAMS)

Rated PG-13 (for violence, some bloody images and brief strong language)
Running Time: 108 minutes

In theaters January 15, 2021.

WONDER WOMAN 1984

Alive and well in 1984, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) works at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and in her spare time saves lives and fights crime as Wonder Woman. Foiling a robbery at a mall shop, she is responsible for stolen artifacts being recovered. One of the ancient pieces, a wishing stone, ends up at the Institute. Diana and mousy new co-worker Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) unknowingly have their deepest desires granted while researching the relic. Driven businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) wants the stone for his own endgame. Against all odds, the formidable female warrior must battle new enemies with the fate of the world at stake.

In grand fashion, Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins recapture some of the magic of their 2017 cinematic epic. This time around, Jenkins also handles writing chores with help from Geoff Johns and Dave Callaham. The story may not be unique, but there is much fun from beginning to end and a moral. A flashback to young Diana, again played by Lilly Aspell, participating in warrior games opens the film. Connie Nielsen returns here as Hippolyta, queen of Themyscira and Diana's mother. Also back for the opener is Robin Wright as her aunt, Antiope - general of the Amazon army. Things get a bit crazy when 1984 enters the picture. Chris Pine reappears as Steve Trevor, the intrepid pilot and Diana's true love from the first movie. To reveal how this happens would be a spoiler. The villains are not as strong as some memorable baddies. Yet they're still interesting. The force is with Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian"), chewing up the scenery as the slightly crazed Lord. Kristen Wiig plays Barbara first as that wimpy SNL character she perfected and then believably transforms into the ferocious Cheetah. The performances are good, but once again it's all about action and effects. Several sequences go on way too long (seemingly necessary to reach an epic film's epic length - just over two and a half hours). Knockout set pieces, including a 1980s - style mall, and a stirring score by composer Hans Zimmer add to the pleasure. Definitely made for the biggest screen possible, this fantasy is enjoyable in any format. And yes, there is a scene during the end credits. "WW84" lassos another thrilling adventure. (3.5/5 CAMS)

Rated PG-13 (for sequences of action and violence)
Running Time: 152 minutes

In theaters and streaming on HBO Max December 25, 2020.

SOUL (2020)

Band teacher Joe Gardner (the voice of Jamie Foxx) is offered a full-time position at his school and also gets a dream opportunity: the chance to play at a popular jazz club. But after an accident on a New York City street, Joe ends up in The Great Before where new souls get their personalities formed prior to going to Earth. Desperately wanting to return home, he is paired with difficult soul 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), who is reluctant to become human. Together, they may just find their purpose in life.

Leaving sequels behind, Disney/Pixar strikes gold with an imaginative and fanciful animated original. Like their "Onward" earlier this year, interesting characters and fresh storytelling captivate the audience. Director Pete Docter, with help from co-director Kemp Powers ("One Night in Miami" screenplay), goes out-of-body for an experience that has some similarities to his inner body "Inside Out". But the story/screenplay by Docter, Powers and Mike Jones has enough differences to be a treasure on its own. Complicated at times, young children may get confused as the plot goes from New York City to the escalator headed to The Great Beyond to The Great Before and back again. The various inhabitants of the afterlife should grab and hold the kids' attention. There are numerous souls that resemble small bluish ghostly figures, along with tall pinkish counselors - all named Jerry. A soul accountant named Terry, looking like a one-dimensional line drawing, must retrieve Joe to balance the books. A talented voice cast adds to the magic. New to Pixar is their first African American main protagonist: Joe Gardner - brought to life by Jamie Foxx in fine voice. Tina Fey is easily recognized as 22. Other notable voices include Angela Bassett as jazz bandleader Dorothea Williams and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson as band member Curley, Joe's former student who helps him get an audition. Phylicia Rashad can be heard as Joe's mother Libba and Graham Norton voices Moonwind, a guide/captain of a pirate ship rescuing lost souls in The Astral Plane and a hippie sign twirler on Earth. The otherworldly score by composers Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste's jazz music compliment striking visuals. Contrasts abound: from the vibrant New York City to the soft pastels of The Great Before. Humor and emotion blend well from start to finish. Tiny souls bounce around the closing credits that end with a "one-liner". The heavenly "Soul" hits all the right notes. Coming across 10-year-old Johanna (Helena Zengel), who had been captured and raised by a Kiowa tribe, Kidd agrees to return the reluctant girl to her biological aunt and uncle. As they traverse hundreds of miles through rugged territory, the unlikely pair begins to bond while facing many dangers.

This enthralling adventure is easily one of the year's best films. A great new oater in the tradition of John Ford's "The Searchers", there's enough action to please fans of the genre. Paul Greengrass, who helmed Tom Hanks' "Captain Phillips", directs this epic based on the novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Luke Davies. Dealing with loss and redemption, the film focuses almost entirely on Kidd and Johanna. Strong lead performances were needed to succeed. There's no one better than Mr. Hanks to carry a movie and he proves it again here, playing possibly the earliest version of Walter Cronkite. But young Helena Zengel manages to carry many scenes on her own. Together they dominate the screen. An able supporting cast moves things along. Mare Winningham, Elizabeth Marvel, Bill Camp, Thomas Francis Murphy, Fred Hechinger, Ray McKinnon, Michael Angelo Covino and Neil Sandilands are among the many performers portraying characters both good and evil who briefly encounter the two travelers. The look is spectacular, with New Mexico landscapes beautifully photographed by cinematographer Dariusz Wolski. Composer James Newton Howard's rousing and emotional score is a perfect fit. While the drama is heavy at times, there are confrontations and shootouts to satisfy cowboy fanatics like me. "News of the World" delivers a winning western. Leaving their cave, they journey to a land beyond a great wall. This paradise is lush, has plentiful food and something unexpected: the evolved Bettermans. Grug feels threatened by the modern family and their tree house with advanced inventions. A reluctant friendship develops and grows stronger when a menacing force outside their safe habitat becomes a problem. The future is at stake.

Fans of 2013's "The Croods" won't be disappointed with this fun journey. First-time feature film director Joel Crawford (TV short "Trolls Holiday") finds a comfortable mix of action and humor within visually stunning animation. Children will be amused, but a couple of scary moments may frighten smaller kids. There's not much for adults beyond a harmless tongue-in-cheek joke or two (one involving a toilet). A marvelous voice cast brings the characters to life. Nicolas Cage returns as Grug. Also back are Catherine Keener as wife Ugga, Emma Stone as their daughter Eep, Ryan Reynolds as Eep’s smart boyfriend Guy, Clark Duke as son Thunk and Cloris Leachman as Gran. New additions include Peter Dinklage as Phil Betterman, Leslie Mann as his wife Hope and Kelly Marie Tran as their daughter Dawn. Young daughter Sandy Crood gets a new voice courtesy of Kailey Crawford. Guy's adorable pet sloth Belt, voiced by Chris Sanders (co-director/writer of the original), is on board again for added cuteness. A familiar story by Kirk DeMicco (Kevin Hageman, Dan Hageman, Paul Fisher and Bob Logan monkey around with the screenplay) falls short of the first adventure, yet still has some charm. There's a hint of a romantic triangle between Guy, Eep and Dawn - the tune "I Think I Love You" (remember The Partridge Family?) is heard more than once. HAIM’s original song "Feel The Thunder" rocks, as does composer Mark Mothersbaugh's score. A welcomed diversion from today's troubles, "The Croods: A New Age" is ageless entertainment. (3/5 CAMS)

Rated PG (for peril, action and rude humor)
Running Time: 95 minutes

In theaters November 25, 2020.

FREAKY

School bullies are the least of Millie's (Kathryn Newton) problems when she comes face-to-face with serial killer The Butcher (Vince Vaughn). During the confrontation, the pair magically swap bodies thanks to an ancient dagger in the maniac's possession. Now in the psychopath's body, Millie discovers she only has 24 hours before the switch becomes permanent. After convincing her friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor), Joshua (Misha Osherovich) and object of her love Booker (Uriah Shelton) of the dire situation, they set out to stop The Butcher and get her female form back before he piles up new victims at Blissfield High.

Chills and laughs collide in this fresh take on body-swapping. Although an uncomfortable mix at times, director/co-writer (along with Michael Kennedy) Christopher Landon largely succeeds at blending horror and humor. The son of actor Michael Landon, he honed his directorial skills most recently on "Happy Death Day" and "Happy Death Day 2U" and ups his game with this fast-paced thriller. An added boost comes from the two leads. Kathryn Newton ("Ben Is Back") handles the transition from scared teen to scary killer, in heavy makeup and red leather jacket, with ease. But it's Vince Vaughn who convincingly provides scares and chuckles. When he gets in touch with his feminine side, the film finds its best moments. The supporting cast of teen actors (mentioned above) are all horror film stereotypes. Adult players are scarce. Katie Finneran gets a few scenes as Millie's boozy mother, who's still mourning her late husband. Alan Ruck appears briefly as an abusive wood shop teacher. Let the squeamish beware: some graphic gore and violence will get the stomach churning. The opening sequence alone makes this "Freaky Friday the 13th". Composer Bear McCreary's atmospheric score adds shudders in all the right places. "Freaky" is an energetic turnaround on the slasher genre. (3.5/5 CAMS)

Rated R (for strong bloody horror violence, sexual content, and language throughout)
Running Time: 102 minutes

In theaters November 13, 2020.

LET HIM GO

A few years after the tragic death of their son, retired sheriff George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) face another change in life. Daughter-in-law Lorna (Kayli Carter) remarries and takes their only grandson away from them. The Blackledges leave their Montana ranch and head for the Dakotas to find their grandchild, who now resides with controlling matriarch Blanche Weboy (Lesley Manville) and her vicious clan. After the Weboys refuse to let mother and child go, George and Margaret prepare for a deadly confrontation.

Striking emotional drama and a powerful cast highlight this intense modern western. Based on Larry Watson's novel of the same name, director/screenwriter Thomas Bezucha ("The Family Stone") has created an imposing portrayal of family, loss and determination. It follows the structure of "High Noon": character-driven, with the bulk of action at the end. The deliberate slow-pacing allows the main characters to develop while a lurking sense of doom adds suspense. Kevin Costner, star and executive producer, ably takes on another stalwart role that's a slight variation on his portrayal of the formidable John Dutton in TV's terrific "Yellowstone". But it's Diane Lane and Lesley Manville (playing an extremely vile villain) as two strong-willed adversaries who elevate the story. When they're on screen together the tension mounts. Most notable among the supporting players are Kayli Carter as the embattled daughter-in-law and Booboo Stewart as Peter Dragswolf, a loner native American who reluctantly helps George and Margaret. Jeffrey Donovan and Will Brittain are Bill and Donnie (Lorna's abusive husband), members of the Weboy clan. Alberta, Canada fills in nicely for the open range landscapes of Montana and the Dakotas through the lens of cinematographer Guy Godfree. Weaving throughout the film is another magnificent score by composer Michael Giacchino. All of the ingredients add up to a compelling experience. "Let Him Go" skillfully captures the essence of the rugged west. (4/5 CAMS)

Rated R (for violence)

Running Time: 114 minutes

In theaters November 6, 2020.

THE WAR WITH GRANDPA

Widowed Ed (Robert De Niro) moves in with daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) and son-in-law Arthur (Rob Riggle). While granddaughters Jennifer (Poppy Gagnon) and Mia (Laura Marano) are delighted, grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) must give up his bedroom to grandpa. Relegated to the creepy attic for living quarters, he wants his room back. With neither side willing to budge, the battle for the bedroom begins.

Humor, sight gags and Robert De Niro keep this family comedy moving along. Based on Robert Kimmel Smith's novel of the same name, the screenplay by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember dives quickly into "Home Alone" territory. The pranks come fast and furious, with many being malicious. Director Tim Hill ("Hop") does manage to lighten things up around the mayhem while delivering a heartfelt message about relationships. As usual, Robert De Niro is the main attraction. But Oakes Fegley (2016's "Pete's Dragon") is an impressive match for the iconic star. Their head to head confrontation works well. A powerhouse supporting cast has little to do. Uma Thurman and Rob Riggle are fine as the pressured parents. Although much of the film is aimed at pre-teens, a bit of adult humor is present. Cheech Marin, Christopher Walken and Jane Seymour provide this element as Ed's two buddies and his female friend. This fluffy entertainment flies by rapidly and is easy on the brain. There are outtakes during the closing credits and the song "Point of War", sung by actress/singer Laura Marano (she portrays Peter's teen sister Mia). A pleasant diversion, "The War with Grandpa" is explosive fun. While she stays home taking care of two young daughters, husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) is off on many trips with employee Fiona (Jessica Henwick) trying to make his business succeed. Little things, like late nights at the office, lead Laura to fear infidelity. She turns to her retired art dealer father, the debonair playboy Felix (Bill Murray), for advice and help. Together, they set out to find clues and end up bonding.

Director/writer Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") takes us on an enjoyable lightweight romp. Rashida Jones (TV's "Angie Tribeca") carries the lead well as a distraught woman, but it's Bill Murray who runs away with this film. At age 70, the iconic star is still charismatic in his own familiar way. The scenes he's not in are less satisfying. This is not the fault of the cast surrounding him. It's just that Murray is simply magnetic. Marlon Wayans plays it rather serious, without a comic touch, as husband/father Dean. Jenny Slate briefly portrays Laura's talkative friend Vanessa. Fans of the "Mission: Impossible" television series should be pleased to see Barbara Bain in a cameo as Gran. Another star of this unhurried charmer is New York City. Cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd lovingly displays the metropolis with only a short side trip to Mexico. The French band Phoenix provides a pop score to go along with the scenery and the song "Identical" for the closing credits. The mystery about adultery keeps the audience guessing until the end. Maybe not her best work, Sofia Coppola's story of connection has much going for it. There's no violence and her reliable leading man is on board. "On the Rocks" is undiluted Murray at his finest. Robbing post office boxes and other low-level illegal efforts highlight their meager existence. With past rent due on their dilapidated office building dwelling, the threesome hit upon a travel insurance scheme. During the trip, they meet the charming Melanie (Gina Rodriguez). Eager to change her lifestyle, she joins the grifters in thieving endeavors. The lives of all involved are affected.

Director/writer Miranda July ("Me and You and Everyone We Know") paints a quirky portrait of human foibles and desires. While too slow going at times, the character-driven plot gets a huge boost from some fine performances. Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger and Gina Rodriguez (TV's "Jane the Virgin") are award-worthy indeed. But it's Evan Rachel Wood who is the main attraction. In a subtle turn, she draws focus to Old Dolio (pay attention to why the parents gave her this name). Wearing baggy clothes and lowering her voice, Wood is rather boyish in appearance and manners. A transformation begins to take place after Melanie enters the picture. At first resentful because mom and dad treat the newcomer like a daughter, she begins to see a future beyond her parents. In a small, yet memorable, role is Mark Ivanir (Netflix's "Away") as Stovik, a man with no emotional filter. He works at the bubble factory next door to the office building where the family lives and collects the cheap rent (only $500 a month if they scrape suds from the factory off the walls each day). There are no laugh-out-loud moments, but humor is present during several situations (earthquakes, plane rides, etc.). Serious scenes occur throughout, including one senior citizen swindle. Details won't be revealed here - even how the title fits in. This is certainly a strange, but strong, relationship film. The unconventional and engaging "Kajillionaire" is right on the money. Courageous Mulan (Yifei Liu), eldest daughter of ailing honored warrior Zhou (Tzi Ma), disguises herself as a man and joins the army in his place. It will test her spirit and determination to help defeat the ruthless forces of Böri Khan (Jason Scott Lee), out to avenge his father's death, and his ally - the powerful witch Xianniang (Gong Li).

This entertaining epic adventure is visually stunning. Yet another Disney animated feature gets the live-action treatment and the result is one of their best efforts in recent years. Director Niki Caro ("Whale Rider") masterfully guides a huge international, primarily Asian, cast through this grand saga. Yifei Liu is magnificent as the beautiful and fearless heroine. Besides the supporting players mentioned above, Rosalind Chao and Xana Tang portray Mulan's mother and younger sister. Donnie Yen is Commander Tung and Yoson An is Honghui, a recruit who becomes friends with Mulan. If you look quick, you may spot Ming-Na Wen (voice of the animated Mulan and star of TV's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") in a cameo. While the cartoon dragon Mushu is missing, a giant flying phoenix guides the budding warrior on her journey. Based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan", the screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. The only drawback is a slow and long setup, but it establishes the heroine's life and goals. Once the battles begin, it's poetry in motion - where heroes can leap tall buildings in a single bound (think "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). Sweeping vistas, shot in New Zealand and China by cinematographer Mandy Walker, are designed for theater viewing. Still, they are also picturesque on smaller screens. This time around, characters don't break out in song. But Harry Gregson-Williams' instrumental score is moving. Christina Aguilera sings the new tune "Loyal Brave True" and the original's "Reflection" (also sung in Mandarin by Yifei Liu) over the closing credits. It's a far cry from the 1998 animated musical, but in a good way. Like the phoenix, "Mulan" triumphantly rises and doesn't get lost in translation. His carefree countryside youth with his widowed mother Clara (Morfydd Clark) changes after she marries the cruel Mr. Murdstone (Darren Boyd). The new stepfather beats him and eventually sends the boy to work in his London bottle factory. Bad working conditions and news of his mother's death send the young Copperfield escaping back to the country. Living with his wealthy Aunt Betsey (Tilda Swinton) and eccentric distant relative Mr. Dick (Hugh Laurie), life improves. But there are many ups and downs before his dream can be realized.

Charles Dickens' novel gets a refreshing cinematic revamp in this lively period piece. Director/writer Armando Iannucci ("The Death of Stalin" and TV documentary "Armando's Tale of Charles Dickens"), with screenplay help from Simon Blackwell, manages to satisfyingly condense the lengthy book. The essence of Copperfield remains and may draw new readers to the author's unforgettable work. An interesting decision to ignore race in casting roles gives this film a more universal appeal. Differences in color within families are forgotten as the talented and diverse cast members deliver brilliant portrayals. Dev Patel is magnetic in the lead role - often breaking the fourth wall while narrating events in his life (Jairaj Varsani and Ranveer Jaiswal ably portray younger versions of David). Hugh Laurie dominates several scenes as the relative who is oddly obsessed with King Charles. Other notables play memorable Dickens characters. Tilda Swinton as controlling Aunt Betsey, Ben Whishaw as the hated Uriah Heep and Peter Capaldi as Mr. Micawber (the generous head of a debt-ridden family that takes David in) are outstanding. The desirable women in Copperfield's life include Agnes (Rosalind Eleazar), daughter of lawyer Mr. Wickfield (Benedict Wong), and Dora (Morfydd Clark - who also portrays Clara Copperfield), daughter of David's boss Mr. Spenlow (Matthew Cottle). Gwendoline Christie appears as Jane Murdstone, the ruthless sister of the domineering stepfather, and Daisy May Cooper is Peggotty, young David's nanny. There are too many characters to keep track of and little time for development of most of them. Details will be left for the audience to discover. Humor is sprinkled throughout. One running gag involves the many nicknames for David. The spectacular cinematography of Zac Nicholson is best viewed on the biggest screen possible and blends well with composer Christopher Willis' enthralling score. "The Personal History of David Copperfield" is a magical twist on a classic tale. With a circus-like atmosphere, owner Mack (Bryan Cranston) and his small menagerie of animals entertain a shrinking audience. Looking to boost crowds and stay open, Mack buys baby elephant Ruby (voiced by Brooklynn Prince). Now out of the spotlight, Ivan ponders his past and future. Among those helping him through this new phase of life are aging elephant Stella (the voice of Angelina Jolie), Bob the dog (voiced by Danny DeVito) and Julia (Ariana Greenblatt), the young daughter of mall employee George (Ramon Rodriguez).

CGI talking animals, a cute kid, and ringmaster Bryan Cranston keep things moving along in this entertaining diversion. Based on Katherine Applegate's novel of the same name, the story is a fantasy version of real-life gorilla Ivan - who gained fame for his paintings. Director Thea Sharrock ("Me Before You"), working from Mike White's (who also provides the voice of Frankie the seal) screenplay, aims squarely at the younger set and pretty much hits the target. The result is a comfortable mix of humor and drama. Like the best of Walt Disney, there are dark moments that tug at the heartstrings before things lighten up. Adults will have to settle for a couple of tongue-in-cheek jokes and picking out celebrity voices, like Helen Mirren and Chaka Khan, in the creature cast. The live-action humans, especially Mr. Cranston and youthful Ariana Greenblatt, blend well with some impressive computer-generated effects. At slightly over 90 minutes, time flies by fast. Be sure to watch the credits, where photos of the real Ivan and another scene are presented. As family fun, "The One and Only Ivan" takes center ring. In his mid-20s, Scott Carlin (Pete Davidson) is still having trouble coming to grips with the tragic death of his firefighter father when he was seven. He's living with his ER nurse mother Margie (Marisa Tomei) and younger sister Claire (Maude Apatow), who's about to leave home for college. Scott has aspirations of becoming a tattoo artist and opening the first tattoo restaurant, but is content with taking drugs with buddies Oscar (Ricky Velez), Igor (Moises Arias), Richie (Lou Wilson) and a relationship with childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley). When his mother gets a boyfriend, firefighter Ray (Bill Burr), trouble ensues. Scott can't stand mom's new love interest. Told to move out, he is forced to re-evaluate his life.
Several factions of students compete for dominance at the Haldwell boarding school. Senior Selah (Lovie Simone) is the head of The Spades, a club known for drug dealing. Her biggest rival is Bobby (Ana Mulvoy Ten), who commands the drama nerds. Staying on top isn't easy for Selah, with added pressure from her mother (Gina Torres) to keep grades up for college prospects. The school's Headmaster (Jesse Williams) is also on her case and there may be a snitch in the group. The pressured teen gets help from right-hand man Maxxie (Jharrel Jerome) and new girl Paloma (Celeste O'Connor), a budding photographer and possible future club leader. Things get interesting when Selah perceives a loss of control.
Writer/director Tayarisha Poe makes an impressive feature film debut with this realistic portrayal of teen angst. While short on plot,
In a fantasy world where magic has been replaced by modern technology, teenage elves Ian (the voice of Tom Holland) and older brother Barley (voiced by Chris Pratt) are about to embark on a mystical quest. Their mother Laurel (the voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) gives the boys a wizard's staff from their late father, who died before Ian was born, on Ian's 16th birthday. The staff's gem has a spell that will bring their dad back for 24 hours.
