At first glance, the Las Vegas filmmakers who regularly show up at the monthly screenings/mixers thrown by Underground Vegas Film may seem a wildly disparate bunch. There’s Greg Parker, who sells his Z-grade splatterflicks (Lord of the Dead, Blade of Death) to horror fans as far away as Singapore via his Web site. There’s Mike Conway, whose sci-fi feature War of the Planets recently bombarded the shelves of just about every Hollywood Video and Blockbuster in the country. There’s the Indecline crew of Bumfights infamy, who as far as we understand no longer “document” homeless people as they beat each other senseless over a 40-ouncer. And then there’s the True Caliber gang, whose arty yet suspenseful short films (Dwelling, Cleaning Up Matters) continue to garner awards at film festivals.

The Past
Jeff Howard remembers every movie he’s ever seen—where, when and with whom. Formerly one half of the local film-critic duo the Movie Guys, Howard is president of the Las Vegas Film Critics Society and a veteran film journalist. He’s also a Las Vegas native who’s been going to movies in town for over 30 years. He saw his first film, The Poseidon Adventure, at the old Fox Theater on East Charleston in 1972. The Fox is one of many defunct local theaters of which Howard has fond memories, painting a picture of a moviegoing experience far different from the one that exists today.

Richard Dutcher and Dave Hunter have clashing views of what’s ailing Mormon-themed movies. Some artists think Nevada is a great place to make their work. Some think it’s a great place to grow up and leave. The Nevada Museum of Art is preparing to screen “Made in Nevada,” a series of films by Nevadans and Nevada expats who see it from both points of view.

Some big names in Nevada business are launching a new company that will develop films and television shows that focus on Las Vegas. Insomnia Entertainment is the brainchild of Trent Othick, who has enticed some old friends — Tim Poster, Tom Breitling and Lorenzo Fertitta — to join him in the new venture.

The best (and worst) places to catch a movie in Las Vegas
Las Vegas has appeared in many Hollywood movies, including Ocean’s 11, Casino and National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation, but there are many theatrical options to watch and relax to in the city. Locations and prices change for every theatre, but the question of how to find the best ones remained elusive – until now.

With last week’s sudden closing of the Tropicana Cinemas, the CineVegas Art House Screening Series has quickly relocated to the Galaxy Neonopolis theaters Downtown. While last week’s scheduled films, The Situation and Sweet Land, which never showed, will be playing at an unspecified later date, the series otherwise remains on track. This week’s openings, Colour Me Kubrick and My Country, My Country, will go on as planned.

In 2004 I wrote about watching thousands of short films and crap I noticed. Waking up to an alarm clock in the first shot - drinking from the Jack Daniels bottle - hot sex with no nudity - changing clothes montage in front of the mirror… I’m sorry, its time for some new ideas.

An alarm buzzer goes off. A man lying in bed stretches over to turn it off, grabbing the Jack Daniel’s off the nightstand. He takes a swig straight from the bottle. We realize that the man is a mime. Just as a gunshot is heard, a ninja jumps through the window and attacks him. Cut to black and a quote from a famous philosopher. CineVegas Screening Series brings indie cinema back to the city
By Shannon Onstot

To get ready for this year’s event, the CineVegas Arthouse Screening Series is bringing an array of creepy, quirky and “truly independent” films to Tropicana Cinemas, located at 3330 E. Tropicana Ave.

The series started Jan. 12 when comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait made an appearance to introduce his film, “Sleeping Dogs Lie,” a romantic comedy about a woman who is plagued by guilt over a sexual mistake she made in college. Once her fiancé and family find out about her secret, chaos inevitably ensues.

by Josh Bell

For people who complain about the lack of culture in Las Vegas, this weekend was a great example of how far the development of film culture has come here in the last few years. On Friday night, I went over to the Tropicana Cinemas to see Bobcat Goldthwait’s Sleeping Dogs Lie, part of the debut week of CineVegas’ new Arthouse Screening Series. There weren’t all that many people at the showing I attended - probably 10 at most, although it was the final show of the evening, and the second for which Goldthwait showed up to do a Q&A. It did look like there were more people coming out of the previous showing as we waited for the doors to open. So maybe the turnout for this event is small right now (friends who went to see Sherrybaby earlier that evening said there were only six people in the theater), but the fact that it exists at all is a huge step for alternative film in Vegas, and I have hope that the management of the Tropicana is willing to stick with these films beyond the initial tryout period of four weeks as awareness and (hopefully) attendance grows.

Talking with Bobcat Goldthwait, whose film opens the new CineVegas Art House Screening Series
By Julie Seabaugh

When people first hear the word “bestiality” in association with Sleeping Dogs Lie, is there a misconception that the film is more of a gross-out comedy or, alternately, more of a shock-drama?

A relationship comedy-drama with bestiality, or a little bestiality, and then it’s directed by the guy from Police Academy—I can understand why it wouldn’t have any specific audience lining up, you know what I mean? I think people do think it’s going to be, like you said, a gross-out comedy, but that wasn’t really too interesting for me to go make that kind of movie.

Tim Onosko says his new documentary is more Studs Terkel than it is Ken Burns while others have described it as a “real-life Broadway Danny Rose.” Up until 1987, Onosko was a journalist and a contributing editor to the likes of several magazines including Omni, Video and Creative Computing. The PBS television series, The New Tech Times, also had Tim as a field producer and on-air presenter. After years of work with The Walt Disney Company and a conceptual designer for both Disneyland Paris and Universal’s Island of Adventure, he was notably involved in Uni’s Motion Picture Technology Office with new media, digital cinema, the Internet and other technology issues since the mid-1990s. Tim has now become a filmmaker himself tracing the path of the classic Las Vegas lounge acts from the 1950s well into the 70s.

Artie Lange has not had an easy night. The Howard Stern Show funnyman says he is nursing a slight hangover and instead of checking him in under an alias, the Palms has listed his real name and people have been calling his room all night. That should be changed by the time you read this. Lange wants to play me one of the messages, so we head to his room. The message is a from a fan in Illinois who wants Lange to know he is loved, or at least that is the gist of the guy’s obscenity-filled monologue.
