At first glance, the Las Vegas filmmakers who regularly show up at the monthly screenings/mixers thrown by Underground Vegas Film may seem a wildly disparate bunch. Thereâs Greg Parker, who sells his Z-grade splatterflicks (Lord of the Dead, Blade of Death) to horror fans as far away as Singapore via his Web site. Thereâs Mike Conway, whose sci-fi feature War of the Planets recently bombarded the shelves of just about every Hollywood Video and Blockbuster in the country. Thereâs the Indecline crew of Bumfights infamy, who as far as we understand no longer âdocumentâ homeless people as they beat each other senseless over a 40-ouncer. And then thereâs the True Caliber gang, whose arty yet suspenseful short films (Dwelling, Cleaning Up Matters) continue to garner awards at film festivals.

Jeff Howard remembers every movie heâs ever seenâwhere, when and with whom. Formerly one half of the local film-critic duo the Movie Guys, Howard is president of the Las Vegas Film Critics Society and a veteran film journalist. Heâs also a Las Vegas native whoâs been going to movies in town for over 30 years. He saw his first film, The Poseidon Adventure, at the old Fox Theater on East Charleston in 1972. The Fox is one of many defunct local theaters of which Howard has fond memories, painting a picture of a moviegoing experience far different from the one that exists today.

An alarm buzzer goes off. A man lying in bed stretches over to turn it off, grabbing the Jack Danielâs off the nightstand. He takes a swig straight from the bottle. We realize that the man is a mime. Just as a gunshot is heard, a ninja jumps through the window and attacks him. Cut to black and a quote from a famous philosopher. The short film ends by revealing itself to be a mockumentary.

To get ready for this yearâs event, the CineVegas Arthouse Screening Series is bringing an array of creepy, quirky and âtruly independentâ films to Tropicana Cinemas, located at 3330 E. Tropicana Ave.

The series started Jan. 12 when comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait made an appearance to introduce his film, âSleeping Dogs Lie,â a romantic comedy about a woman who is plagued by guilt over a sexual mistake she made in college. Once her fiancÃ© and family find out about her secret, chaos inevitably ensues.

For people who complain about the lack of culture in Las Vegas, this weekend was a great example of how far the development of film culture has come here in the last few years. On Friday night, I went over to the Tropicana Cinemas to see Bobcat Goldthwaitâs Sleeping Dogs Lie, part of the debut week of CineVegasâ new Arthouse Screening Series. There werenât all that many people at the showing I attended - probably 10 at most, although it was the final show of the evening, and the second for which Goldthwait showed up to do a Q&A. It did look like there were more people coming out of the previous showing as we waited for the doors to open. So maybe the turnout for this event is small right now (friends who went to see Sherrybaby earlier that evening said there were only six people in the theater), but the fact that it exists at all is a huge step for alternative film in Vegas, and I have hope that the management of the Tropicana is willing to stick with these films beyond the initial tryout period of four weeks as awareness and (hopefully) attendance grows.

When people first hear the word âbestialityâ in association with Sleeping Dogs Lie, is there a misconception that the film is more of a gross-out comedy or, alternately, more of a shock-drama?

A relationship comedy-drama with bestiality, or a little bestiality, and then itâs directed by the guy from Police AcademyâI can understand why it wouldnât have any specific audience lining up, you know what I mean? I think people do think itâs going to be, like you said, a gross-out comedy, but that wasnât really too interesting for me to go make that kind of movie.

Tim Onosko says his new documentary is more Studs Terkel than it is Ken Burns while others have described it as a âreal-life Broadway Danny Rose.â Up until 1987, Onosko was a journalist and a contributing editor to the likes of several magazines including Omni, Video and Creative Computing. The PBS television series, The New Tech Times, also had Tim as a field producer and on-air presenter. After years of work with The Walt Disney Company and a conceptual designer for both Disneyland Paris and Universalâs Island of Adventure, he was notably involved in Uniâs Motion Picture Technology Office with new media, digital cinema, the Internet and other technology issues since the mid-1990s. Tim has now become a filmmaker himself tracing the path of the classic Las Vegas lounge acts from the 1950s well into the 70s.
