I am starting with an Android Tablet (feedback pages) Pretty late ...in 2013. That means buying an affordable Tablet and giving some feedback. I try the devices both on myself and older people. This helps me understand usability and technologies better.

So a whole new world of Android and Apps, that is the answer to the earlier post.

I see a Splendid Future for Tablet Computers as they consume low power, portable, wireless web, ergonomic and affordable. They leave less eWaste when the product is disposed and it does not stress the Health of the user.

Invent something like Satellite Software/Media Download DTH Service - Small dish on Roof, A Stand alone Box with One Tera Byte HDD and USB.

This has a Tiny LCD Touch Screen, Key in the URL & Press Get, Wait. Media ready beep will come in a few secs. Satellite Delays don't matter.

Either you connect the USB of this Download-Box to Router to make a media server for your Netbooks & Tablets or plug it to your Desktop PC.

Table with Glass

Keep a three square feet and 5mm thick unbreakable Glass Sheet with smooth non-injurious edges; on your desktop. You can then slip some very important memos, that are routine, write on a white sheet with colored sketch pen; slip under glass. This will ensure you dont' miss the routine "thing to do". Post it notes also works well, but this "Post under Thick Glass" is more tamper proof and reliable.

Then now that we have Tablet Computers with Quick Boot and Low Power. You can Install Stickies. Things could not be better.

Also one thing to remember when you go Tablet Shopping. Insist on Gorilla Glass, it is class.

Units and Metrics -

Screen Size is in Inches. Carbon or 'caramba' is the color code to emphasize the energy consumption.

Power is the zap or punch of 'P4 at 2 Giga Hz with 1GB Ram' - Let us say, this configuration packs One "Gonz".

Energy is the juice it takes on the average browsing, word processing or youtubing, in Watts.

What you saw and What you got

If a Video was created in a Lower Resolution it is no use showing it at a High Resolution. A Video created or acquired in High Resolution can be shown in any lower resolution.

Showing a Video in High Resolution in smaller devices will not help much. This is the limit of the Human Eye itself. So do not waste bandwidth and processing power in very small devices.

Order Processing for Small Biz

A Small Restaurant who is taking orders by web or phone for home delivery or table booking can find this a easy to configure automated solution.

An Android tablet with the Chef, Smartphones with each Waiter. A low power, low cost Nettop with each Order Booking/Support Person. Even the customer can browse online and see the Progress of his Menu.

A Trello board is some product or project that is under continuous development, though a board can have a variety of uses and mean different things. Boards are made up of multiple lists.

Generally, lists on the left are the start of a workflow and lists on right are the end. Lists contain cards. Cards represent the basic unit of a board, for instance: a new feature, a bug, a story lead, a legal case, a client, research for a paper, a potential employee, or a customer support issue.

Mood Avatars for Google Plus

This adds a fun element and can make the threads look more lively, but has no productive use.

When we make a post or comment on google plus, you can also set the mood, like they use Smileys in SMS. This makes your avatar of that post/comment have a mood like a smile/frown or anger.

Training -

The Interactive training over webcam creates the mood avatar set, say 12 moods. This can then be integrated with the GUI. There can also be a Auto setting for the lazy ones, The default being manual.

Auto Mood Detector -

This is the best part, The detector figures the mood, either it uses the webcam or the contents of the comment/post/link text. Then it changes the post/profile avatar or both.

Manual Mood Set

The users can upload their own pictures or animations or even SVG. This configures the twelve Moods, the default can be a Standard Smiley Icon set, if they like it that way.

Tablets and Slates will Replace the Idiot Box

Television or TV has been Non-Interactive since Time Immemorial. We have Flat-Panel TVs Now and also Mobile Phone Interactivity on some functions.

Combining TV and Mobile Phone you get Interactive TV. But this is not the right way as it will become Expensive and Clog the Networks.

TV Programs must be Download Only, best by Satellite. Over that will ride a TCP/IP cable. This combined and synced, is the first crude step towards Convergence. A long Denied Dream of the Digital Age.

Now they invented Tablets and Slates, this changes everything. Every Man, Woman or Animal(Garfield) can watch their favorite program, in any posture and anywhere. It could be at the Roof Top or in the Garden. A WiGig Home Network may help too.

HDD defrag Pains

Fat32 makes hdd defrag a foolish task. NTFS may be better as it follows probably some DEC(digital) unix structure. Linux file systems seem to manage things better (it leaves ample space at file ends). This is where Hybrid Drives may perform Better. Flash and (Spinning) Hard Disk in one box.

Bios, OS, Kernel, System, Types can Go into a Flash+RAM arrangement.Program Settings and others in a similar setup. Installed Applications and Programs on One partition of HDD. Hidden OS Copy too. Other partition for Data and other user creatives.

Edit file priorities - In RAM then in Flash for some days. Move to HDD later when data stabilizes. Fast changing files only Flash. Very fast changing files in RAM or battery backed RAM.

The the use of software and computers for Business in Inevitable. If the system maintenance, virus, security issues, updates and usability make things more time consuming than Registers, Books and Card Indexes. The solution to a problem may become a problem in itself. defrag is just a tiny issue. There are many more.

The word defrag has to become obsolete.

IDE and Graphical design for Lean Code Generation

Even software has IDE and graphical design, but they make the end program bulky with redundant code. A Software Firmware design environment like a circuit diagram, which generates compact and fast binaries or even code like Javascript-ActionScript to run on virtual machines.

(put as a feedback in some forum, storing snippet here. once around 2000 i saw an activex 400 Mb in size, provided as component. many such incidents make me think this )

Graphical Interface generates scripts. Components, Modules based on scripts. IDE extracts necessary script sub-elements from component and glues to main script. The end script tree in form of an xml and sub-scripts is compiled. No binary parts fully used.

Pinnable Windows and Configurable Containers for Desktops

In Windows MS or Linux KDE/Gnome and Mac. The Windows could also be set as Containers. ( Like Active Desktop on Win-98, a good idea but Implemented Wrongly and at wrong time). A secure container which can be a Window, Active App. Service Monitor, Image, Web Element, RTF Block, Adobe Flash Block. This container can have behavior of windows or a Block that is pinned, cannot be closed when it is a block. It can only be a Plain Monitor or only Output device, like Graph Display, Flash. Take Inputs within the applet. A container can be allowed to communicate with only the URL specified and blind to rest of web/network.

From "Browser on OS" we could Move to "Browser is the OS". With only a underlying Firmware not OS. Make a Menu-less interface for usability. Touch implementation on all OS. Dockable Rechargeable WiGig Monitors for Touch. Will keep desktops interesting.

Desktops - Should become Energy Efficient, Low Footprint on Tables. Wireless. When WiGig becomes a Reality, Every home/office can have a single App Server/Router driving 10 LCD-Touch Multimedia-Wireless Terminals. The Wireless Monitors can be carried around as media tablets with no computing power at all. Some terminals will be for TV, Some for Browsing. Some for Business like Point of Sale (POS) Touch Screen. For both form filling, requisitions, reporting or result displays.

Security has to be both - Internal and External. Each Containers has one or more objects and many threads. On right click container, The internal and external communications should be indicated in the same object graphically. The user can switch off/on, allow/block other internal communications OS API or database/dll/ocx etc. External Communication - websites - URL - IP - Web API Provider. The OS/Kernel/Firmware itself seen as the large main container. This OS Container files can only be altered/updated by a admin or a Web API from the OS Provider on SSL only.

When we search and get the results the keywords and results can be monitored in the network. In some cases : examples - a researcher working on a sensitive topic, an inventor gathering data for his next innovation.

When a competing firm or group gets the keywords and results, they will be ahead in getting their products to the Market.

The technology is similar to Enterprise Search, but Secure Search is a search that has all web content with a subscribed access, SSL and encrypted 'like' gui-keywords-results.

Researchers, Companies and Inventors can subscribe and keep ideas and study Secret !

Intelligent USB Hub

If there was an Intelligent USB hub, which behaves like a Router-LAN . Then Peripherals can interact between themselves without turning on the Computer.

Like a External HardDisk with music can work with a USB Hi-Fi Music Player. A Camera/Printer can transfer/print photos without the knowledge of the PC from the USB Thumb Drive.

BroadBand and Web Usage Etiquette - Revised for Web Two and More

I had written a Bizarre Post once online before Blogs had come into being. An Online dairy i maintained manually in Geocities/Tripod. In those days the DUN (Dial up Networking) usage had many problems. Even in those days some webmasters used to have a Megabyte Flash or HD Video on the Homepage. Today after speeds have gone up, both end users and companies are using it in a way, that may be called un-frugal or even irresponsible.

So i write another absurdity, if only to bring some green light to the new users, desktop, netbooks, tablets and Mobile. Add a word "please" to every bullet below.

We have users on 256, 512, 2MB, 4MB speeds. A large user base on earth is around 512 KBps.
When net is very busy, many sites are loaded with many visitors, even high speed users cant see site.
Client speed, Site Speed. Network speed all counts and 256kb guys must not be left out.
Do not overuse P2P or Torrents for DVD and HD Video. Many users, mobile too now. will clog the Net at times.
Use small paged flash presentations and never on the Home page. Flash uses more CPU, Mem and Speed.
Use Satellite Services for HD Video, download movies using Satellite DTH. Buy Software on CD./DVD even Linux.
More and More people should try to switch over to Notebooks, tablets and the very affordable Netbooks or even Nettops. Desktop computers consume too much power, and the computing power many times is redundant. With much energy problems and also lack of portability. Leave the desktops for application developers, heavy media creators and gamers.
Offices should move to Nettop and Server-Client systems. Internet/Intranet but over TCP/IP and Ethernet. Save power.
Data Centers, Clouds, Server Clusters should be more Energy Conscious than Processing Power. All servers modules must be in low power consumption but watching. When demand builds up, more modules become active and share computing load.

As more users start uploading un-optimized images and videos online using Portable Devices or P2P. All Hardware/software designers assuming ideal broadband conditions, will make things difficult. MultiMedia and Social Networks may load the Web more. Business, Commerce, Communication, Information and Education needs some edge or layer on fun-n-frolic.

Need for a OpenCache - Web Robots please share data

No Search Bot may like this, this is because this is an important part of search engine technology. All the crawler bots taking the same data, repeatedly, load a site too much. Sometimes even if there is not much change in the site, the bots crawl, and it is not Green for Bot or Human. I am talking now of the Good bots only. There are other bots, like Bad and Ugly that is not in the scope of this post.

Now if a OpenCache is created, collaboratively by all search engines. The big search engines donated a cache of some stable and archived pages. Then The Big and Small can share this data, to avoid repeated tasks. The Opencache also can crawl the marked or shared pages once a week and report on a feed as update for all other bots. Even the Giants can go Green, if they Crawl some sites or pages together using OpenCache.

Like OpenCache Bot can be given all Archive Sites and also some High Priority Leading News sites. These no other Bot on earth or Mars will crawl. The OpenCache bot places the Cache on the Cloud for all to use. This reduces load on big ones, who jointly run this service. Small search engines or apps can use data api free upto some limit and pay for a license beyond a limit.

The robots.txt can have just one entry option, for some who need it. "Get it from OpenCache Bot"

Using Online Advertising Effectively

Attractive and Easy to Understand Ads work well.
Use the Search Keywords of your Customers, think.
Focus on the Language, Region and Content Areas.
Make Ads Interesting, not just the name of Firm.
Image, Video and Flash ads can Present Products.
Use Google Analytics to Study and Improve.
Draw in the Customers with something new or free.

Webmaster Basics

I am putting back some of my old posts (~1999) after review and corrections. Excuse Spelling, Grammar and Content mistakes.

Keep information 3 clicks away to improve accessibility, have a search and site map too.
Html tables can be sized with % and not by pixels, so that it can resize according to different computers of say 1024*768 and 800*600. use pixels for single columns only or when you put all in a 740px limited page.
FTP not working use passive mode for fire walled sites. Use Filezilla.
Avoid frames even iframe of dhtml, use the noframes option. Main problem is that visitors cannot get back to your frames site after finding a nice page on the search engine, or keep a link on every framed page to home index.html with '_top'.
Webpages should be usable, at 1024*768 and 800*600. viewable by mozilla 1.0+ and IE5+, most used vga settings are 1024*768 high.
The KiloByte weight of a single web page with images, flash, js and css could be a max of 100 kb for up to 10,000 views per day, 200 kb for 1000 visitors per day, 500 kb if you have only 10 visitors per day. Due to bandwidth requirement of server and other bottlenecks. A page of 500 kb will cause great frustration to some users at busy times and poor connection. Use >1Mb pages only for Intranet or offline work.
Always keep your local website in one folder like 'myweb' all sub folders within that, to a large extent use lower case, 8.3 format like anewpage.htm, .html and .js etc. If you use long file names do not use space in file names or folders, try something like my-best-book.html.
Images should be like ../images/cat.gif or pictures/jug.jpg. not like file://d://myweb/images/cat.gif this will not work url should be 'relative' only or 'absolute' like http://www.sun.com/jug.png.

Widen Website Usability - Keep it Simple

The webpages you make should be verified in all major browsers. The pages, webapps, scripts and applets must work well in Linux, Mac and xp.

Making it very flashy, Animated DHTML navigation, etc. may impress a few but may be a big usability problems for some visitors, search engines also will have trouble indexing your pages. Avoid too much frames and scripts too, use some CSS. DHTML-CSS generation in some Wysiwyg work only in certain browsers and OS - Beware.

The Pages must be Viewable by 800*600 and 1024*768 Monitors.
The PNG transparency must work for few versions of all above browsers.
The Main Pages must load quickly for users of Broadband and Dial-up-Networking.
Very Big Jpeg, Pdf, Mpeg, Flash, mp3 or Webapps must load only on Request.
A Menu / Toolbar, Breadcrumb, sitemap and a search to Navigate and Return.
Appropriate Meta-Tags, Proper title wth not more that 6 or 7 words.
An About-Blog-Cell in Main Page to indicate in short what the website is for.
An easily Accessible Online email form to contact you easily.
A clear indication of who is the webmaster or company behind website.
The Font size should not shrink and become unreadable on some browsers.
light background preferable with dark 12px font or better.
Inform in advance, pages about cookies, activex and java that needs information.

AI Applications to query Search Engines

AI or artificial intelligence applications could be used to generate the search string to the search engines, this may help simple people get what they want in the internet, without having to rack their grey matter to improve their search results. The strength of a AI application depends on a human built database of knowledge with a capability to learn thru internet or by collaborative computing.

Then i have a small AI - DOS based program made by Greg Leedberg which works pretty well, it is called daisy, i taught it many things for over a year, now it comes up with interesting things, i have never heard about.

Computing for Web and Web for Computing

The Desktop Computer also called IBM Compatible PC and the Later Laptop/Notebook as SMD and CMOS technology developed. These both computer configurations formed as computing evolved with electronics manufacturing technologies. Networking and Web came a bit later.

Computers developed more for data processing. Then came the Internet, with it came a new purpose for the computer.

Now a new age, low energy age. All Electronics has to be frugal in resource usage. Hardware very light, Software must be Network Friendly, Client server type. Solutions cost-effective, consumer friendly.

This alone is sustainable. This applies to data processing too. If the cost of a solution is more than just living with a problem; That solution is unnecessary. We have to find a better way.

A Computer has to be Built for the Web and the Web has to be Built for this Computer. This is needed for Communications, Education, Books, Knowledge, Shopping and Business.

Most Important Specs. - Low Power, Wireless, Portable, Secure, Simple. The Browser is the Most and Only Important part of this Computer.

It has to be Maintenance Free Computing (client side). This applies to two main branches -

Enterprise Computing or Data Processing or Office Computing
Consumer Computing or Home Computing or Multimedia-Games-Entertainment

The clients and servers of both have to be designed in different ways. It has to be Web or Network Centric, Energy Conscious, Cost Effective, serviceable, maintainable and sustainable.

Universal Sound and Music Browse Plugin

Playing various sound formats on the browser is a difficult experience for many. Even just midi and mp3 within browsers is difficult sometimes. Most plugins require big supporting software and frequent updates.

The adobe swf and flv plugin seems to integrate well with all browsers and is small and quick to update-setup. If small and medium mp3 and midi can be converted to swf or flv and played hidden in the webpage it could make integrating of sound in pages easy. So we need a midi to swf converter or a new flash sound only format like FLS, Flash Sound ?

Google Reader in Content Presentation

Google Reader can be used as a Dynamic Content Presentation tool in Plain html pages. This has to be used in combination with Ajax Api and your Blog's Feed Set to Full. It has an advantage that only browsers with JavaScript enabled can view content. Then Search engines may not be able to index it.

Each site has to have its own Unique API Key, A Key on a top level domain may work on folders and subdomains. This is my learning. Once you make tags in reader make the tags public and use the feed URL of the tags on different pages or sections. Now by just tagging your posts in reader you will present your pages to the visitors. A Small site can be managed without editing any page !. But i am not sure if this can be a CMS idea.

Reader also has a Share with note that can be published with ajax api. By using the Bookmarklet "Note in reader", you can just comment on nice pages on the web. Your note and a Teaser Snippet of that site will be seen on the Ajax page you made. Set Description to full.
