McDonald moves to Royal Challengers Bangalore

According to a Daredevils official, the transfer fee for McDonald was US$100,000. McDonald played only one game for the Daredevils in 2011. In his three seasons with the team, he played just six games, scoring 76 runs and taking five wickets.

"All-rounders are a priceless asset and we are pleased to add Andrew to our squad," Sidhartha Mallya, the director of Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd, said. "He has excelled with bat and ball in different formats. We have no doubt that he will make a big difference to our prospects in the coming IPL season."

TA Sekar, the head of cricket for Daredevils owner GMR Sports, said McDonald "would fit in well with the Royal Challengers."

McDonald is currently playing for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, where he has made 156 runs from five games at an average of 52.00 and a strike-rate of 136.84.

Harmeet played two games for the Chargers in 2011, picking up three wickets at an economy rate of 7.57.

Harmeet and McDonald were the fourth and fifth players to be traded during the current transfer window. Dinesh Karthik moved from Kings XI to the Mumbai Indians for a record $2.35 million, with R Sathish heading in the opposite direction. Kevin Pietersen was transferred to the Daredevils from the Chargers.

"The process of player-transfers during the trading window is gaining in momentum, and we are likely to see more action in the days leading up to 20 January 2012, when the first part of the window will close," Rajeev Shukla, the IPL chairman, said.

There will be another short window for trading after the February 4 auction in which the players of now-terminated franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala will be sold. The 2012 IPL will run from April 4 to May 27.

Yuvraj Singh ruled out of IPL

Yuvraj Singh, the India batsman, could be ruled out of cricket for as many as six months due to the ongoing treatment of his non-malignant lung tumour. This means he will at least miss the Asia Cup and the IPL, where he captained the Pune Warriors last year.

The last time Yuvraj played competitive cricket was the Tests against West Indies last November, and he was originally hoping to return as early as next month's ODI tri-series in Australia.

According to PTI, quoting an unnamed source from the IPL, Yuvraj is currently overseas. He has travelled to the United States in order to undergo "advanced treatment" for the tumour following which there will be a period of recuperation expected to take several months as well. This means he would not be available to play in the IPL, which starts on April 4. The unnamed IPL source said it could take up to "six months" for Yuvraj to return to cricket.

It has been a nightmare run for Yuvraj since his Man-of-the-Series performance in India's World Cup victory last year. An injury kept him out of the tour of the West Indies and his contribution to India's tour of England was cut short by a finger injury sustained during the Nottingham Test. He returned for the home Tests against West Indies, and was left out of the side for the third Test, in November.

Anderson eager for IPL chance

James Anderson, the England pace bowler, wants to play in the Indian Premier League and has voiced his concerns about the limited opportunities for English players in the competition.

Anderson is currently the No. 2 bowler in the Test rankings but was overlooked in last year's IPL auction. He believes giving England's players the chance to play in the IPL would help their chances of defending their World Twenty20 title next year.

"I would like to play in the IPL," Anderson told the Manchester Evening News. "I got back into England's Twenty20 squad at the back end of the summer because of an injury to Stuart Broad, but I would like to get back into the side on a regular basis. I see the IPL as a way of showing I can play Twenty20 cricket and that's why I want to go out there."

The 2012 IPL season gets underway on April 5 with the county season set to begin a day later. However, a major issue for Anderson - and other England players - is that the closing stages of the IPL overlap the first two Tests of the summer against West Indies.

"The availability is obviously an issue and it is quite frustrating for us," he said. "We want to keep our position as world champions in Twenty20 cricket. The more Twenty20 cricket we play the better. This summer we only played three matches, how are we supposed to keep improving as a Twenty20 side when we only play three games?"

England players who have been involved with the IPL include Eoin Morgan, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011, Kevin Pietersen, who became the most expensive cricketer in the world in 2009 when he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $1.55million, and Ravi Bopara.

England will play four T20s next summer, one against the West Indies and three against South Africa. The World Twenty20 takes place in Sri Lanka from September 18 to October 7.

Nine teams likely for IPL 2012

The IPL is likely to comprise nine teams in 2012 and players from the terminated Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise could be made available to the other franchises through a player auction early next year, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. The 2012 IPL is also expected to return to the home-and-away format of the first three seasons.

The newly formed IPL governing council, headed by chairman Rajiv Shukla, will meet for the first time in Hyderabad on October 14 and the fate of the Kochi players and the tournament's format are the key issues up for discussion. The other issues are whether a new team will replace Kochi, the dates for a trading window and player auction, and the participation of Pakistan cricketers in the league. The IPL management met with franchises individually to solicit their views on these issues.

The BCCI had voted to terminate the Kochi franchise at its annual general meeting last month. The Kochi players' salaries were covered through the franchise's bank guarantee worth Rs 156 crores (already encashed by the BCCI) yet the question remains how leading players, both international and domestic, such as Muthiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, Mahela Jayawardene and Parthiv Patel, will be made available to the franchises.

One option is to put the players in a fresh auction. Another is a trading window during which the players could sign with new teams. A franchise official told ESPNcricinfo an auction was the more probable outcome.

The BCCI is likely to stick with nine teams for the time being, despite president N Srinivasan saying in the board's annual meeting that the governing council would decide on whether to issue a tender for a 10th franchise in the October meeting. Nine teams will also make the schedule more manageable. In its attempt to keep a ten-team IPL in 2011 to 74 matches, the BCCI had moved away from a simple home-and-away format. The franchises and the BCCI are in favour of returning to the original format, since the number of games would increase marginally to 76. The franchises also feel the home-and-away system is the fairest option.

The player auction is expected to take place early next year. In addition to Kochi's players, it could feature cricketers from England as well as Chris Gayle, who starred for Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Dirk Nannes in 2011. The Royal Challengers, however, have the first right to sign Gayle, provided both parties can agree on terms. If Gayle chooses not to sign with the team, only then will he enter the auction. All the teams will be allowed an additional amount to spend on new players, extending the salary cap.

Shukla also said the participation of Pakistan players will be discussed at the meeting, though the final call on whether to buy them rests with the franchises.

As in the past, there will be a trading window towards the end of 2011, with the auction to follow. The teams also have the option of buying out contracts to make space for new players.

Royal Challengers Bangalore retain Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle has been retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the next two IPL seasons. The Royal Challengers had first rights to Gayle's services after he represented them as a replacement for Dirk Nannes in the previous year. Though the amount he has been signed for is yet undisclosed, it is to be revealed to the IPL authorities and will be deducted from the Royal Challengers' auction purse.

"We are delighted to make Chris Gayle a permanent member of our IPL squad. We are confident that with players like him in our side, we will take the extra step this season, and win our maiden IPL title," Sidhartha Mallya, Director, Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd, said in a release.

"To me, Bangalore has been a home away from home," Gayle said. "I wanted to continue playing for them, and it turned out that they were keen to retain my services."

The IPL trading window closes on Friday, January 20, and the Royal Challengers had the option to either retain Gayle or leave him to be open for auction on February 4. He went unsold at the auction last year and the maximum amount the Royal Challengers could pay him was $650,000, the amount Nannes was bought for. He joined them on a one-year contract and topped the run-charts in the 2011 season. This year, however, he could be bought for a significantly higher amount; the purse each franchise has been allowed is $2 million.

Gayle was in prime form in the IPL last year, playing a crucial role in Royal Challengers' journey to the final. He struck two centuries, three half-centuries, picked up eight wickets - a prize catch for any franchise that had his services for the season to follow. A BCCI official, at the time when Gayle's future was uncertain, told ESPNcricinfo that the Royal Challengers were keen on signing Gayle but would have to shell out a large portion of their purse to convince him. "Bangalore want Gayle because they see the cricketing merit in the decision as he helped them to the final last year," the official had said. "But if they decide to sign a deal with him, they will have to pay big money and if they do that they will be left with nothing much at the auction."

The Mumbai Indians, a richer franchise than the Royal Challengers, were also interested in signing Gayle but Royal Challengers made use of their first rights to his services.

David Miller retained by Kings XI Punjab

David Miller, the South Africa middle-order batsman, has been retained by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the fifth season of the IPL, and given a two-year contract. Miller had joined Kings XI as a replacement for Dimitri Mascarenhas last season but did not play a game. He has been on the fringes of the South Africa ODI and Twenty20 side, and scored a half-century against Australia in the October 2011 series.

Teams who signed replacement players last season have first rights to their services this season, provided they can come to an agreement with the player on the price. Had Miller not been retained by Kings XI he would have gone into the mix for the February 4 auction. Kings XI sold Dinesh Karthik to the Mumbai Indians earlier in the transfer window, which closed on January 20, and have brought in R Sathish and Miller to bolster the batting.

Miller has never played an IPL match, but averages 31.30 in Twenty20s for his South African franchise the Dolphins with a strike-rate of 127.75. English county Durham signed him to play in the 2011 Friends Life t20, and he scored 212 runs at an average of 26.50.

After being drafted into the South Africa team as a 20 year old in 2010, Miller was left out of the squad for the 2011 World Cup. He received a recall for the home ODIs and Twenty20 internationals against Australia, but despite his half-century did not even figure in the squad for the series against Sri Lanka.

IPL 2012 to start, end in Chennai

The fifth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), comprising nine teams and 76 matches, will begin and end in Chennai, with the opening match on April 4 and the final on May 27. The teams will play each other at home and away during a league phase consisting of 72 games at 12, possibly 13, venues, beginning with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings playing Champions League T20 winners Mumbai Indians.

There won't, however, be any matches in Sri Lanka, the BCCI apparently turning down a suggestion by Sri Lanka Cricket to stage a few games there.

The Pune Warriors franchise will host eight games at the new stadium in Pune, subject to its completion. In 2011, Pune had to stage their 'home' games at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Dharamsala and Visakhapatman will also host two games each, and Cuttack is listed as an alternate venue to Hyderabad for two matches.

The first Qualifier, which will be contested by the top two teams in the league, and the Eliminator, contested by Nos. 3 and 4, will be held in Bangalore. Chennai will host the second Qualifier, which will be played between the winner of the Eliminator and the loser of the first Qualifier, and the tournament final.

The tournament is scheduled to begin 12 days after the Asia Cup final and a week after the end of South Africa's tour of New Zealand. At present there are three international series that will clash with the 2012 IPL and could affect player availability for both the franchises and the countries. Sri Lanka are hosting England in April, while West Indies host Australia and then travel to England in May.

The next player auction for the IPL is scheduled for February 4.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen has transferred to Delhi Daredevils from Deccan Chargers for the 2012 season of the IPL, the IPL has confirmed. Pietersen is the third player to switch teams during the transfer window, after Dinesh Karthik and R Sathish.

"We are pleased to add Kevin to our line-up. He brings rich experience and an explosive quality to our batting and can be a more than handy offspinner as well," said TA Sekhar, GMR Sports' Head (Cricket). "We are sure that Kevin will help us to be very competitive this season and the Delhi Daredevils fans will enjoy this addition."

Pietersen was earlier part of Royal Challengers Bangalore and had captained the team for a few games in 2009. He was acquired by Deccan Chargers during the 2011 player auctions but could not play as he was recovering from a double hernia.

Pietersen, currently in the UAE for England's away series against Pakistan, said he was looking forward to the challenge of being part of a new setup. "I am looking forward to a wonderful time with the Delhi Daredevils," Pietersen said. "It will be a great experience to be playing in the same squad as Sehwag."

The first window for trading between IPL franchises closes on January 20. There will be another short window for trading after the February 4 auction in which the players of now terminated franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala will be sold. The tournament will run from April 4 to May 27, 2012.

Dinesh Karthik to transfer to Mumbai Indians

Dinesh Karthik, the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper, will move from Kings XI Punjab to the Mumbai Indians in the first notable transfer ahead of the IPL's fifth season. Karthik was bagged by the Mumbai Indians for an undisclosed sum. A BCCI insider said it was easily the highest sum paid to buy a player from another team in the history of the IPL. In exchange for Karthik, allrounder R Sathish will go to Kings XI.

"It was a substantial sum and easily the highest in strictly trading terms," the board official said. "Mumbai wanted a keeper. Punjab did not mind as they were getting a good amount of money."

Kings XI had spent $900,000 (Rs 4.77 crores) on Karthik during the Jaunary 2011 auction, making him the second-most expensive player in their squad, behind David Hussey and joint with captain Adam Gilchrist. Though the IPL and both franchises have been muted about the trade, it is understood that Mumbai have paid $2.35 million (Rs 12.4 crores* approximately) for Karthik. Unlike during the auction, when the franchises are restricted by a specific purse, there are no caps on spending during trading. According to IPL rules, 20% of the profit made in a trade - in this case $1.45 million - goes to the player with the rest going to the franchise selling him.

Sathish, who does not have an India cap, will be paid Rs 30 lakhs ($56,619) by Kings XI according to IPL rules.

Despite having a power-packed squad, Mumbai Indians have struggled to find a full-time wicketkeeper. Yogesh Takawale, Luke Ronchi and Aditya Tare were tried over the first three seasons. They bought South African Davy Jacobs during the 2011 auction, and he turned heads by standing up to the quicks. However, he picked up a hip injury during the Champions League T20 in September last year, forcing Mumbai Indians to throw the gloves to Ambati Rayudu, whose frailties as a keeper were exposed during the tournament.

When the trading window opened on December 15, 2011, Mumbai Indians immediately declared their interest in Karthik. Kings XI have Gilchrist as their first-choice wicketkeeper and Haryana's Nitin Saini in reserve, which would have made it easier for them to take the large amount offered for Karthik.

Karthik spent the first three IPL seasons at the Delhi Daredevils but they did not retain him for the next season. Kings XI grabbed him at the auction, doubling the $525,000 Delhi had bought him for in 2008. Karthik was the first-choice wicketkeeper for the Daredevils but had to play as a batsman for Kings XI. In thirteen matches for Kings XI, he scored 282 runs at 25.63. In his 46 matches for the Daredevils, in the IPL and CLT20, he got 803 runs at 25.90 and affected 37 dismissals.

In a release issued by the BCCI, the owners of Kings XI were quoted as saying, "Dinesh played an important role for Kings XI Punjab last season, but with our captain Adam Gilchrist donning the wicketkeeping gloves, we were unable to harness Dinesh's complete potential. Everybody at Kings XI Punjab wishes him the very best in his future endeavours."

The owner of Mumbai Indians, Nita Ambani, said: "We are very pleased to add a player of Dinesh Karthik's calibre and specific skills to the Mumbai Indians squad as this addition will further strengthen our side."

Sathish joined the Mumbai Indians for the third season of the IPL; he was granted amnesty by the BCCI after he quit the rebel Indian Cricket League. He played 28 matches for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and CLT20, scored 223 runs at 15.92 and took two wickets. He also impressed with his athletic fielding.

Ojha moves to Mumbai Indians

Pragyan Ojha, the India left-arm spinner, has transferred from Deccan Chargers to Mumbai Indians for an undisclosed fee, ahead of the fifth season of the IPL . Ojha had been with the Chargers since the first season of the IPL, and took 62 wickets in 56 matches at an average of 22.19 and an economy-rate of 7.08. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2010 edition of the IPL, with 21 wickets.

In 2011, Ojha played a less-prolific role for the Chargers. With legspinner Amit Mishra coming into the side, Ojha was restricted to playing just 10 of the 14 league games and took 10 wickets. He has now moved to the Mumbai Indians, who have Harbhajan Singh, the India offspinner, and left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza in their spin department.

Nita Ambani, the owner of the Mumbai Indians, said Ojha's international experience - he has played 14 Tests and 16 ODIs for India - was the reason her team had decided to buy him. "With a spinner of Pragyan Ojha's competence, we fortify our bowling department that has won us many matches in the past seasons," Ambani said. "Ojha is a player of great international repute, and we welcome him with much excitement."
