I have a flaw. I am not proud of it. I have a great deal of trouble writing resumes. These things that ask you to brag about your accomplishments, quantify them, show your results, write in the active voice, erase all traces of I!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

This is my worst nightmare on steroids.

Remember, that introvert thing, talking about my accomplishments is sometimes difficult for me. I am certainly proud of myself and things that I have done. What my friends can tell you is that I sometimes don’t see the whole picture. Especially when it comes down to the details. Thankfully, I have many people in my life that have come out to tell me just how awesome I really am. I have started to understand those details better and that is the state of mind I took with me when building my portfolio.

The Best Worst Advice About Resumes You Will Ever Read

I am taking my copywriting business more seriously. Actually getting proactive in building a business website that can capture some leads and some customers. I know it was time for a resume/portfolio makeover. I have been putting it off for forever, tried designing it myself, and then I had a revelation.

The website was the least of my worries! I have read some great blogs with cr@p design. Are they still read, You Betch’a!

I am a copywriter. Writer is built into my title.

Bye Bye thrills and whistles. I need to show off my text.

I decided it was time to let go with advice and go with my gut.

The thing that is unique about me as a writer is that I incorporate design and code into my work.

I have a bloggers mentality when it comes to copywriting and I don’t want to be ashamed of that, I want to emphasize it.

So I decided to choose a resume style that reflected that mindset.

How to Steal Great Layout Design for Any Project

I am sure you could have seen this one coming. I just did a week where I talked about how artists learn how to steal the best stuff and put their own creative spins on it. Well I dug into my design swipe file and found this little gem.

PrimaryCSS.com

If these 22 layouts work for websites, then why couldn’t I apply them to a paper document. Heck, the website itself is stolen from another work about 22 panels for comic books that always work. Maybe they are just 22 orientation patterns that people have adapted too. That makes them useful for much more than their original purpose.

I settled for this design.

Header

Three Panels Underneath

Then Two Columns That Form the Body

Writing the Resume Copy

This is when I began deconstructing the advice that I have been swallowing about resumes. All that stuff people have told you since you were old enough to get a job . Really, what needs to be on a resume?

Well that comes down to the goal.

My goal, show off my talent for code & design + add some personality.

That is really all a potential client needs to know from me.Can I deliever on my promise.

I want my resume to show that the answer is, Yes.

The Final Product

I don’t want to take up too much time explaining every nitpicking detail of what I chose to include. If you want details you can see for yourself by downloading a copy of the PDF. [I should also say that this format is convenient for emailing friends, if you know of any interested parties.]

I can do you one better than that folks. This is what I was getting down to; a writer that can utilize design and code in her work. I recreated my resume with CSS on my portfolio website. It is also built on top of a responsive framework. Just a fancy way of saying that if you change the browser window size that the page will automagically arrange itself to fit.

Check out my Responsively Designed Resume

Please go over and visit the site to see how it all works. It is a lot of fun to explore. I really am proud of the fact that since the resume is a living document on the web, that it will get crawled and indexed by the search engines. My other talent is on page SEO so this should help boost the visibility of the resume as well. Something that doesn’t usually happen if you just upload a PDF to your site.

I can’t tell you yet if this will be successful or not. Right now my old resume is batting zero for me despite critiques from professionals. I am hoping that something that is uniquely my own thoughts will do better. It certainly cannot perform worse.

Tell me about your resume? What has helped you the most in job hunting? What was the least effective?

[If you are a fan of my writing then you will want to check out my copywriting blog unique to Susansilver.net]

Illustration: Frits Ahlefeldt-Laurvig

It is a typical reaction for mothers to have some depression after the life changing event of having a child. During this time women may feel they have a lot to work on, unsure of their own parenting skills. They may feel let down by the experience of motherhood or not up to the task of being a responsible parent. These are all normal feelings and typically go away after several weeks. This period has been coined the “baby blues”.

When the symptoms get more severe or if the feelings linger for several months, you may be experiencing Postpartum Depression (PPD).

Early Signs of Postpartum Depression (from NIHM):

Symptoms of Postpartum Depression are similar to Depression that occur at other times in life

Agitation or irritability

Changes in appetite

Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

Feeling withdrawn or unconnected

Lack of pleasure or interest in most or all activities

Loss of concentration

Loss of energy

Problems doing tasks at home or work

Negative feelings toward the baby

Significant anxiety

Thoughts of death or suicide

Trouble sleeping

You can imagine how disturbing this may be to the new mother and why they may not seek treatment.

These mothers do love their children very much and would never harm them, it is the thoughts that cause the problem and lead to depression.

Again the answer is reducing the stigma over the condition and helping these mothers get treatment at the first sign of problems.

Last year NPR did a story on Postpartum Depression, Click This Link If You Cannot See the Widget Below.

Here are 5 common myths about Postpartum Depression.

According to the CDC 11-18% of women report symptoms of Depression after childbirth http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/Depression/index.htm

Postpartum depression is treatable and recovery is very possible. There are support groups all over the country that you can reach out too. They can give you a recommendation for local doctors that have a specialty in working with patients like you.

Your are not alone.

Was practice the key that led Nirvana to become the first grunge band to go main stream?

[Buy Nevermind on Amazon (aff link)]

I was watching “Nirvana: Nevermind” on Netflix streaming. This documentary from 2005 reveals some of the behind the scenes work that went into the historic album. It also featured interviews with founding members David Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

Grohl and Novoselic talk about what it was like when they left Aberdeen and moved to Seattle. Those first few years they did nothing but practice and play. They weren’t even dating. Music was their life.

The Power of Practice

I think I can say with little doubt that this practice lead them to make such an amazing album. Nevermind revolutionized the music industry and gave it a new vitality. It ushered in an era of new voices. Ones that were contrary to the images presented in Pop. This music appealed to alienated teens and disgruntled Gen X’ers.

The producer for the album, Butch Vig, was also interviewed about the album. He made two points that really stood out to me about the recording session for Nevermind:

1. Anytime Kurt did not want to do something Vig just told him, “Lennon Did It”.

2. Double tracking came naturally to Cobain, he was able to line up the vocals nearly perfectly.

It is practice that made this possible. Cobain knew his music inside and out. He knew what it had to sound like. He knew every beat…because they practiced, practiced, practiced.

The Anti-Punk Punk Rockers

One of the reasons why I think Nirvana went mainstream while other grunge bands didn’t has to do with their identity. The band was always looking to go mainstream. When they realized that Sub Pop was not going to get them where they wanted to be, they sought attention from a larger label. They asked to be bought out of their contract and they got their wish.

This may or may not have happened, but they took initiative.

Nirvana’s front man, Kurt Cobain, was also enamored of the Beatles. Particularly by John Lennon. Cobain approached his music more as an art rather than focusing on doing something anti-establishment. He always intended to have some songs with a punk aesthetic and some with a pleasant pop hook.

Lessons for Bloggers

1. Write, Write, Write

If you are blogging, pod casting, vloging, then you have to practice your craft. Did it everyday. Edit everyday. Get it right, or wrong. Learn and keep at it. You have to practice if you want to get better.

What is the fastest way to get to Carnegie Hall? Practice.

2. Be an Artist Not an Imitator

Kurt Cobain began through imitation. When Nirvana was still signed to Sub Pop, he felt that he need to copy the sound of other artists on the label. He was a misfit who didn’t know where he fit in. He wanted to write more pop songs, but felt that he couldn’t. He finally got the confidence he needed to do his own thing when he was signed to a major label.

You do not have to wait that long.

3. Stop Thinking Like an A-Lister

You may want to be Chris Brogan or Seth Godin, but you won’t get there by thinking. You have to get there by doing things your way.

What do you do best?

Play to that strength.

Work hard, play hard, network hard, write hard.

Bring your A-Game to everything you do.

It is hard to imagine, but Cirquedumot’s Bloggy Birthday is coming up in a month. June 2011, yep! Here is my first ever post written for the SITS Girls challenge.

June 1, 2011- Navigation Menu Design

Sadly, this website outlived Hall of Beta. I miss it, because the design was really beautiful! Simple and it took advantage of Twitter in a way that I would love to replicate.

Well this is an update post. I have been working since January to build up Cirquedumot in a meaningful way. I even have been going out on a limb lately to develop a voice! To be controversial! To dare myself to be open and honest with what I have to say here. I document it a bit more in an upcoming post for “A Girl Named Michael“.

I think that is the hardest thing to do as a writer, is to find a way to put your personality on the page. I don’t know how journalists do it! You have to be objective and somehow make the news not be boring! I’ve been reading up on the AP guidelines and advice…which is why I am going to talk about my projects now.

Current Projects

1. The 1UP Project

This is my big one. An idea that had been brewing since the inception of this blog. I really believe that it is time to bring the humanity back to advertising, and blogging is the perfect outlet for it.

Mostly, I see a big problem. Epic fails as Kimberly Gauthier put in a recent post:

Recently, I received this letter and I was going to respond to the person explaining exactly why I wouldn’t accept a submission from them, but then I wondered “do they even care?” I doubt that anyone who would send this email cares about how best to communicate with bloggers. -How Not to Communicate with Bloggers with An Example

The thing is, this is not the first post I read decrying the failings of PR reps.

I am well aware that there are other advertising solutions out there. I am a member of Social Spark. I just hate how disconnected I am from the brands that I promote. I think it is because of these methods that many sponsored posts get written off as Spam. Dang it, I’ve read someone awesome ones and if there hadn’t been a disclosure you would have praised the heck out of ‘em.

1UP wants to change that, and I am aiming to make it a great experience for bloggers and advertisers alike.

I Need Your Help!

Take a 5 Question Survey

I am collecting some baseline stats about what Bloggers and Advertisers expect from the project. I would love your input. Please spread the word to others who would like to share their experiences.

Survey for Bloggers

Survey for Advertisers

2. Writing Portfolio

That button really says it all for me, I Love Design. If you click the button above you will see how much! I have collected all my favorite resources and my own tutorials on that page.

I have been educating myself over the past year. Enough so that I am building my own custom theme, and succeeding. It is taking forever…but it is for a good cause. Having a website like no other online. One that takes advantage of HTML5 and Responsive Design.

Proudest moment so far…Installing a Grid system which is making it a breeze to position elements. It helps that there are a ton of frameworks out there that designers/developers have given away for free.

The most well know actually belongs to Twitter, and it is called Bootstrap. It contains all the elements you need to quickly prototype and build your own app. It is freaking awesome.

3. StoryDam

It is hard to believe that I am co-partnered running an awesome writing community. But, I am. I have been a mostly silent partner. Though I am jazzed to be involved.

I am working with:
@mdragonwillow
@mentalmosaic
@riverand

Morgan and Riverand are killin’ it. I want to become more involved. Especially since I’ve have been getting more involved in the writing community. We are growing, and I ask you to join us.

The Rub

I have been frayed lately trying to multi-task. Really letting myself down, in ways others may not see. I certainly do and I came to a realization.

Cirquedumot is no longer my highest priority.

I am reducing the amount of time I spend with it every week. At least until I get to a good place with my other projects. I am hoping this will only be going on for another month.

I am scared about becoming that blogger. You know the one that said they were taking a vacation and never came back.

I assure you that I am her for keeps.

There will be updates 1-2 a week + Stumble Saturdays

As a bonus this month on Sundays I will be departing form my normal content to discuss Mental Health Awareness. This will be happening every weekend in May.

It took me awhile, working side by side, to notice the scars. Once I did, I couldn’t forget. They looked like train tracks running vertically down his wrists. That is when I started asking him,

“Will you have lunch with me today?”

“No” was the reply.

In high school we were partners on a project for our computer networking class. Our assignment was to build the website for our school. We were paired together, but really, we just goofed off. We would spend the hour locked into a tiny room, and I would ask him, “Will you have lunch with me today?”

Most often he said, “No”. After a while my persistence really began to cause him discomfort. He began to threaten my life, saying he would kill me. He told me how much he hated me.

I still asked, “will you have lunch with me today?”

Eventually, he began to open up. He confessed about his “friends”. Basically the kids he spent time with at school kept him around to kick his self confidence. Telling him that he was a loser and other insults. He also opened up about the troubles with his mother. He was a kid in need of help that I couldn’t provide, but at least by the end of the year I had become a real friend to him.

In high school I wasn’t unpopular.

I wasn’t bullied.

I just coasted invisible to most of the kids around me. It would have been nice to stand out or to belong to a clique. That just wasn’t in the cards for me. I did fine, got good grades, and entered college. I discovered a whole new world of socially awkward kids that had a similar experience.

To all the parents out there worried about their kids, We turned out okay.

When people ask me about it, I am grateful for my experience.

As an invisible I was granted unprecedented access to the experience of my peers. I was a non-threatening figure to them. A blank slate, and many kids found that I was a good listener for their problems. I developed a patience and compassion for others because you never know what is under the surface.

I took that experience with me to college where I settled into Psychology as my major. I was deeply affected by my Abnormal Psychology course. That is just a fancy name for the class you take where they describe the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and the classifications for mental illness.

And I was disturbed.

Not by the material.

But by my teacher and his cynicism.

That is when all those experiences finally clicked for me and I became a Mental Health Advocate.

Many still do not understand that mental illness is a physical illness that is triggered by chemical reactions in the brain.

Important Statistics about Mental Illness:

1 in 4 American adults have a diagnosable mental health disorder during the year. [1]

Mental Health Disorders are the leading cause of Disability in the US. [1]

Suicide is the second most common cause of death for college students. [2]

Mental Illness is the second most common reason for insurance denial due to pre-existing condition. [3]

Up to one in five Americans under age 65 with a pre-existing condition, 25 million individuals, is uninsured. [4]

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that in 2002 the total direct & indirect costs of serious mental illness totaled $300 billion per year. [5]

NIMH estimates that in 2006 more people paid for expenses related to mental healthcare than any other other medical condition except for asthma [6]

It is estimated that severe mental illness affects at least 15% of the prison population. [7]

There is no way that I can cover every aspect of mental illness in one post. Unless it was very, very, long. There is just one thing you need to know. One thing you can do right now to help all the people who are struggling.

Support them in seeking treatment.

Early intervention is one of the best ways to increase the quality of someone’s life.

This is the number #1 recommendation of every Policy Paper I have ever read.

Unfortunately, several obstacles to achieving this goal remain. For example, stigma frequently surrounds mental illnesses, prompting many people to hide their symptoms and avoid treatment. Sadly, only 1 out of 2 people with a serious form of mental illness seeks treatment for the disorder.- President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health

Every Sunday this month I am going to be covering some of the areas where I have particular knowledge. Spoiler, it has to do with College Interventions.

Thanks for reading, I am not going to leave you with a question. I just want you to ponder these statistics. I don’t know everything, but I can lead you in the right direction for answers if you have questions.

What is the weirdest search term that has brought someone to your website?

Seriously.

I bet there is one or two queries that you are shocked about.

Stealing Faith is on of my new favorite blogs. I love the author’s sense of humor. Sure, it is another family bloggy blog, but these one has a very unique voice, and that is very good. I love the series she calls:

The Posts That Brought You Here

Her most recent edition was for April

Of course she isn’t the first nor will she be the last blogger to do a round up post of this type.

Since this week is about stealing good ideas, here a few of the search terms that have brought people to Cirquedumot in the past month:

quotes about creativity – This obviously comes from this post. “9 Inspirational Quotes for Creativity” , is proving to be the best post in terms of search performance. It goes to show you that these very classic post types are still very popular with people.

social mention- I did a whole “how to” and argument for why bloggers should use Socialmention.

transmedia storytelling examples – This post about Transmedia got some nice mentions in some blog posts, and actual click throughs. I think this is because it is still an ill defined term, there is a lot of ambiguity around it. Jut like me people want to see how it is developing.

picard engage- I am so happy to rank for this search term at all. I used Picard and the Enterprise as a metaphor for my own journey. Yes, I like Trek too (DS9)

I know this is a short post for the moment. My search terms are bland and boring. Never quite as original because I have not made any strange comparisons, yet!

I am reminding myself everyday to be a braver writer. I want to have strange and wacky search terms, and that means getting outside my comfort zone as a writer.

One more post coming up today. Sorry the updates schedule has been erratic. Normally I wouldn’t mention it, but it is has been a rough week here. Still trying to gather all the loose ends. Updates for the 1up project coming this weekend.

Are you familiar with @mqtodd (Michael Q. Todd)

I knew him from running #eavchat when I was still learning Empire Avenue. He also runs #toolschat with @leowid of Buffer App.

I really started to get to know him through 12most as he has contributed several posts. He is a member of my 12Most Triberr group and that got me reading his blog. He is one of the most approachable people online, and I don’t know how he maintains so many relationships. He is one of those people who got to the top of the heap because they genuinely like to help and share information. I am not even sure what he does for a living, I have never felt that he was trying to sell me something. I appreciate that.

When he posted, “25 Random Things About Me“, I knew that I wanted to do something similar. It helps that he asks us to contribute in the title. This really wasn’t a steal, but a great idea for a blog post given freely.

It is so nice to get this peek into someone’s life. I blog, because I like connecting with people online. It has really inspired me to learn and grow with so many people. It is a collective social experience, and there is nothing quite like it. You can’t compare it to the offline social experience, they are apple and oranges. I appreciate both for what they are.

Here We Go Folks.

This week is about the art of the steal, Pinterest is a great target. The intuitive user interface has been on of the biggest pluses for the web app. The simple layout of the Pins is a visual treat for the eye.

Why I Love Pinterest

See Full Size Image

It is too nice looking. Have you wondered why so many design portfolio pages have a grid layout? These tiny little squares just present images in a pleasing way. When I saw Pinterest for the first time, I filed away some links to my favorite Pinboards. I wanted to find a way to replicate the design in the future. I just needed the right opportunity to come along.

Redesigning a Sneeze Page

Hey, do me a favor. Click that link above the post in the banner. That is my New Readers page, and the recipient of a recent redesign.

Honestly, I never knew what to write for the New Readers guide. If I was as prolific a blogger as Darren Rowse, maybe I would have something to offer. My pickings are more slim, with only a few posts that really took off. I just never knew what to say about them.

But Maybe I didn’t have to!

Of course, the solution was in front of my face. Good user interface (UI) design has a lot to do with conventions. Pinterest is the king of a new UI paradigm. It is literally changing the ways we think about navigating the web. People are learning how to navigate these visual grids.

When Opportunity Knocks, I Answer

Honestly, it was not that hard to replicate the look of Pinterest by using a WordPress Plugin called Catablog.

The purpose of the pluign is too create a catalog for an ecommerce store. I have found a lot of use for it in displaying image galleries in an attractive way. One that can be easily styled using CSS.

I created a simple catalog with images that are linked to the most popular posts. I identified them by looking at the most common landing pages from search in Google Analytics. I wanted to highlight the articles that really got people interested in the site.

Here is the design that I came up with.

See Full Size Image

It is overly simplistic, and I realize that it doesn’t match Pinterest exactly. I didn’t even know if I should use a red button. It may be too close to their design. I wanted to do my own homage and I think the results fit. For people who use Pinterest regularly the interface should be familiar enough for them to navigate.

The Swipe File: Art of the Steal

A Swipe File is where you place all the great ideas you find and want to use. It could be a writing technique, a phrase that stands out in your mind, a quote, a design element, research or anything else. We need a place to store these templates to use later, that is our swipe file!

Okay, I want to see those hands in the air. I know many of you have “stolen” an idea that you saw somewhere. There really aren’t any original ideas left. Some of the best stories are based on even more ancient tales like Joseph Campbell’s research into the hero’s tale. You don’t have to be afraid to steal, artists have been doing it for years.

This is what writer Austin Kleon has to say on the matter. Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative[Affiliate Link]

Ways Bloggers Can Keep a Swipe File

There are a few ways to do it depending on what resonates with you. Here is how I manage my files.

1. WebClipping

What I mean by web clipping is cutting and pasting snippets of websites that you like. This is if you don’t want to just bookmark the site. Maybe you were inspired by a photo or a turn of a phrase. No need to save all of it, like scrapbooking the web.

Tools You Can Use to Do This:

Copy & Paste into a Document

Use Evernote

Use Diigo

Use an Addon for Firefox or Chrome

Take a Screenshot

Save your snippets online or download to a folder on your computer.

2. Curation

I think curation really comes down to this mentality. We see great ideas & we want to share them! Let’s do it!

Tumblr

Storify

Notescloud

Pinterest

Scoop It

Stumble Upon

Twitter

Facebook

These web apps help us share great content. I have a Tumblr account, Crqtique, that I use to keep my swipe files. I am not using it socially, but I could.

3. Bookmarking

Sometimes we just have to save that website for future reference. Either it gives us inspiration or we just need to keep returning to it.

This is the easy one, just bookmark it! I am going to teach you one of my great tricks right now. A way to sync your bookmarks across computers, no matter where you are.

1. Get a Dropbox! (referral link)

2. Once you have it set up, Export your Bookmarks from your browser.

Tutorial for Firefox

Tutorial for Chrome

3. Place the Bookmark File in Your Dropbox Folder

Done!

Now, all you have to do is go to your Dropbox where ever you are and you will have your favorite websites. It is a great way to back them up! Plus, if you switch browsers you won’t lose any of them.
