The easiest way to get to Carnegie Hall is simply to sit back and let The Sound of Swing take you there. This edition of the program features two historic jazz performances at the renowned concert hall. You'll hear selections from Benny Goodman's ground breaking 1938 concert and more from Duke Ellington's 1947 concert.

When Jazz made its way out of the brothels it became socially acceptable. It also became subject to critical evaluation on an academic level. Jazz musicians, certainly with the collusion of their audiences, began to see themselves as "artists," and there was a demand from musicians and fans alike that the music be respected on par with more “Classical” forms.

The answer to the old riddle “How do you get to Carnegie Hall” is not “practice, practice, practice.” On this Saturday’s (June 4) Sound of Swing, we’ll take you there via two jazz concerts. The first is the ground-breaking 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert billed as “20 Years of Jazz.” American music critic and historian of the Metropolitan Opera, the late Irving Kolodin was one of the first American critics to really pay attention to phonograph records and the classical and jazz performances preserved on them.

Overnight, “All things Lindbergh” was the rage. I mention this, because of a little dispute that has emerged centering on a song credited to Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields called “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.” There are claims that the original music was by Fats Waller, not Jimmy McHugh and the lyrics were by Andy Razaf, not Dorothy Fields.

This week on the Sound of Swing a memento mori... "In Memorium Page Wilson: 'Oh, Didn't He Ramble'"

Thought provoking music from several contemporary artists as well as those from the 78 rpm era.

“America in 1938”
While Socialists, Communists and Fascists were making power grabs in Europe, America's attention was often elsewhere. Here’s just some of the things that were happening in 1938 America:

DuPont announced the name for its new synthetic yarn: "nylon."

Heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis knocked out Max Schmeling in the first round of their rematch at Yankee Stadium.

Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral.

Superman mades his first appearance in Action Comics #1.

The Sound of Swing began over 20 years ago on WCVE Public Radio. It was a bit of a fluke. A producer in another part of the country offered a swing music program for distribution on the Public Radio Satellite System, and WCVE Public Radio decided to add it to its schedule. The program guide went to press listing the new program, but by the time the start date rolled around, the producer, for whatever reason, had withdrawn the offering.
