The answer to the old riddle “How do you get to Carnegie Hall” is not “practice, practice, practice.” On this Saturday’s (June 4) Sound of Swing, we’ll take you there via two jazz concerts. The first is the ground-breaking 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert billed as “20 Years of Jazz.” American music critic and historian of the Metropolitan Opera, the late Irving Kolodin was one of the first American critics to really pay attention to phonograph records and the classical and jazz performances preserved on them.

At time of this broadcast on this day in 1927 a virtually unknown airplane pilot named Charles Lindbergh in the Spirit Of St Louis was about 2/3 of the way through his 33 ½ hour non-stop solo flight from New York to Paris. Overnight, “All things Lindbergh” was the rage. I mention this, because of a little dispute that has emerged centering on a song credited to Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields called “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.” There are claims that the original music was by Fats Waller, not Jimmy McHugh and the lyrics were by Andy Razaf, not Dorothy Fields.

The Sound of Swing began over 20 years ago on WCVE Public Radio. It was a bit of a fluke. A producer in another part of the country offered a swing music program for distribution on the Public Radio Satellite System, and WCVE Public Radio decided to add it to its schedule. The program guide went to press listing the new program, but by the time the start date rolled around, the producer, for whatever reason, had withdrawn the offering.
