Author John Nichols suggest a huge payoff of a lunar colony:

The Moon has trillions of dollars worth of minerals just waiting to be mined. I’m talking about ores such as gold, platinum, iron, and so forth. Nuclear-powered robots could be sent to the lunar surface first, establishing the groundwork for a permanent habitat next to a crater that gets perpetual sunlight. The Chinese have already located such an area on The Moon. By the time astronauts arrive they would be able to walk into the beginnings of an actual lunar base. Robots would then begin to tunnel into the surface of The Moon in order to mine minerals to send back to Earth. As mining progresses, the Moon Base may progress into a full-on lunar colony, complete with solar power plants and inflatable domes for growing food. After this outpost is established, an ectype of the colony could then be placed on Mars.

Dear Mitt:

In this year's contest for the Republican nomination, you have demonstrated your ruthlessness. Your attacks on fellow Republicans have show that you are willing to be as brutal, vile, and remorseless as is necessary to defeat your opponent.

Presumably, this is how you made $200 million in about 12 years at Bain.

In 2008 and now in 2012 you have left a field of wounded warriors in your wake: Huckabee, Giulianni and now Newt. We can see you are willing to be as dirty and nasty as you need to be to win. But the question remains, will you do the same to Barack Obama?

Will the media stand by and let that happen? I think the press will protect Obama the way a lioness protects her young.

They will make you out to be a ruthless corporate raider, an opportunistic villain, the perfect caricature of corporate evil so ably portrayed by Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko.

They have teed up their arguments already with their Occupy protests. Thus, they will cow you to keep the gloves on and go down to a polite, Republican defeat just like John Sidney McCain.

They won't let you get away with it.

That's why I think you will lose in the general.

CNN, citing Spain's newspaper, ABC says that socialist strongman, Venezuelan President for Life, Hugo Chavez is riddled with cancer which has spread to his colon, skeleton and spine. The paper reports: "there has been metastasis in the bones and the spine," and went on to cite results from his medical tests performed at the end of December 2011. ABC further reports that Chavez may have between nine and 12 months to live, at most.

Chavez has led a re-invigoration of the Socialist brand in Central and South America with the re-installation of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, the election of Evo Morales in Bolivia and the unsuccessful attempt by Mel Zelaya to upend the Honduran constitution to allow his illegal re-election.

More recently, the German newspaper Die Welt reported that a secret agreement between Hugo Chavez and Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was signed in October to allow construct a joint missile base at the northern-most tip of Venezuela, just a few hundred miles from Florida.

Barack Obama famously said (during a long and dreary radio interview): " that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states cant do to you. Says what the Federal government cant do to you, but doesnt say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf..." You may suffer the entire four minutes here.

Well, one of those "negative liberties," Mr. Obama bemoans is the 4th Amendment, which states in part: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated..." Leave aside the fact that Obama is using Orwellian contortions to suit his purposes, see Bruce Walker's thoughts below.

But those negative liberties, what the government may not do to you, is the point which Aaron Tobey, a student at the University of Cincinnati was making, when he scrawled that part of the Constitution on his body and stripped to his shorts to protest the insane policies of the TSA.

And, writing in the American Thinker, Bruce Walker, sums up the twisted logic that Obama uses to describe our Constitution as a charter of negative liberties, saying in part: "The 2001 audio tape of Barack Obama describing the Constitution as a document of "negative liberties" reveals an utterly Orwellian Obama. How can liberty be anything other than negative? Liberty is the absence of external control. Only in our age of collective thinking and untidy language could such a thing as "positive liberty" be conceived. The state power to coerce is not liberty."

Under Obamanomics, Hispanics Hit Hardest -- Repost

On September 3, Vice President Joe Biden said: "The Recovery Act is doing more, faster and more efficiently and more effectively than most people expected." In July, U.S. President Barack Obama told CNN that his $787 billion stimulus package is "working exactly as we had anticipated…" Well then, perhaps they anticipated driving legal Hispanic immigrants out of the workforce because this group, along with the lesser-educated in general, is very clearly the hardest hit.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS, unemployment among (legal or counted) Hispanics in August was 13.0%. That is up 60.5% from August 2008 and 20% since February of this year. But this rate masks the real job losses as a result of the recession.

As noted in an earlier post, the (legal or counted) Hispanic workforce population has been growing at annual rate of 3.3% from 2001 through 2008, 4.3% if you include the year 2000. However, between August 2008 and August 2009 the rate of increase in the Hispanic population was only 0.63%. Therefore, if the American workforce had been growing as usual, the number of Hispanics in the workforce would have been some 727,000 higher than it is now. Again, these are legal (or counted) immigrants*.

The 727,000 number represents actual jobs that would have been created in better times.

That means, the economy has actually shed AND not created many more jobs among the Hispanic population than the numbers indicate. Combining the actual Hispanic unemployment level (2.9 million) and the number of jobs not created (727,000) yields a total of 3.63 million, which is 15.8% of the potentially larger labor force (22.3 million + 727,000) as opposed to the currently reported 13.0% in the Hispanic population. That is about 95% higher than the unemployment rate of Hispanics in August 2008 and 45% higher than February of this year. And this is not the larger U6 number---unemployed, part-time and workers marginally-attached to the workforce---which is 16.5% for the entire civilian workforce. U6 which is not calculated for Hispanics, would certainly be much higher.

Of course, this argument, while interesting is totally academic, since, strictly speaking, you can’t lose something you haven’t created. Nevertheless, it does humanize the true severity of this recession. It also illustrates the ridiculousness of counting jobs saved or created, which is what this administration is trying to take credit for.

The good news is that unemployment in the African American community (15.1%) was up by a smaller amount since February---13%---versus 60.5% for Hispanics and 61.8% for whites. The best off among us remain college educated workers, a group which accounts for only 14.3% of the population. The unemployment rate for that group is 4.7%, up 14.6% since February. H.S. graduates fare as well as the economy as a whole, their unemployment rate is equal to the economy as a whole, or 9.7%, only 17% higher than February.

*The Center for Immigrations Studies, an immigration study group, estimates that some 1.7 million illegal immigrants may have returned to their home countries between the summer of 2007 and first quarter of 2009. Of that number, some 818,000 (~48%) were less educated Hispanic immigrants. In the last 12 months alone, the CIS estimates that 403,000 of this category returned to their home country. While notable, these figures would not be included in survey of total Hispanic workforce.

President Obama is planning a major address on Monday to mark the anniversary of the Lehman Brothers collapse, to take credit for “taking us back from the brink.”

Well, a speech seems appropriate, since next week marks another anniversary, that's the week, a year ago, that the president's political fortunes changed for the better. One year ago today, Lehman Brothers collapsed, which set off a week of financial bloodletting on Wall Street. Within a month, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped almost 3,000 points from 11,421.99 on September 12 to 8,451.19 on October 10. By the end of the year some 40% of the world's wealth had vanished, according to Stephen Schwarzman, chairman of the Blackstone Group.

Coincidentally, on September 8, 2008, after the Republican Convention (and the Sarah Palin bounce) the Real Clear Politics average of polls had the hapless McCain beating Obama 48.3% to 45.4%. But, when Lehman Brothers failed, all bets were off. By September 17, both candidates were neck and neck at 45.7% apiece and the rest, as they say, is history.

But the crisis didn't end there. On the day the president was elected, the Dow Jones dropped 486 points, not exactly a ringing endorsement. By the end of that week it closed at 8,497, down 1,128 points.

Then there was the “stimulus bill” which was passed in February, that triggered another bear market. The day it was announced that Republican Senators Collins, Snowe and Specter would support the stimulus, the Dow began dropping from 8,280 on February 6 to 6,547 on March 9. That’s a loss of 1,743 points in a month. It also happened to be 3,078 points lower than the day the president was elected. That says the markets didn’t believe the stimulus would work.

Maybe that’s because four years earlier, a pair of economists at UCLA, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian warned of the damage an ill-conceived stimulus could do to the economy. In their study of the Great Depression, they concluded that FDR’s policies prolonged the misery by 7 years.*

But, that’s exactly the policy President Obama instituted. Now, the world is wondering whether we are actually bankrupt. And, we are forced to beg China to continue financing of our exploding debt.

To put the gears in motion, someone, we know not who, drove up the price of gas to over $4.00 a gallon. Could it have been George Soros (who also had a very good crisis) or Iran even? And, the collapse of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, that pair of Democrat slush funds hastened the demise of Lehman and company. It was especially convenient that this all happened under a Republican president.

Indeed, 2008 was a year full of magic for Mr. Obama, but the crystallizing moment happened one year today, no wonder President Obama wants to give a speech, that's how he celebrates.

A Long Train of Abuses and Usurpations

Every time I turn on the news, I wonder how bad it can get. In fact, the new administration and Congress is so imperial, so indifferent to ordinary Americans, so disdainful, so awful, it makes me want to turn away, to take up painting seascapes in Baja California, armed to the teeth, of course. Sort of like Sara Conner in the early Terminator movies.

As attractive as that prospect is (and Sarah Conner, for that matter), this would be the coward’s way out.

Yet the fact remains: the country is not being run for, by, or of the People. In fact, the evidence shows that this government is doing it to the People.

Here’s a partial list of the long train of abuses and usurpations of this most contemptible government.

John Kerry and the slow kids in the global warming/climate change movements are positively giddy that the economy contracted.

“Let me emphasize something very strongly as we begin this discussion. The United States has already this year alone achieved a 6 percent reduction in emissions simply because of the downturn in the economy, so we are effectively saying we need to go another 14 percent.”

The druids in this Administration, led by the pathetic Ken Salazar, with his western affectations, continues to place our energy resources out of reach. Remember folks, cheap energy would make our goods (manufactured goods, that is) very competitive in the world economy.

The faux cowboy, Salazar, continues to trot out ancient myths such as: "We sit on 3% of the world's oil reserves,” which completely ignores 1.5 trillion barrels of oil locked up in shale deposits in the “17 oil-shale zones in the Eocene Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin, which is located in northwestern Colorado.” These are estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey.*

Barron’s lays out this useless idiot in green lavender.

And, oil shale isn’t the only thing this poser is obstructing. He's also slowing "proposed lease sales in Cook Inlet, in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, and in the North Aleutian Basin north of the Alaska Peninsula on the edge of Bristol Bay. It does not affect several billion dollars worth of leases already issued off Alaska's coast."

More from the Anchorage Daily News: "That means means more extensive consideration for areas of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts that were off-limits to drilling until last summer, when record energy prices led Bush to lift a ban on offshore drilling. In the face of crippling gasoline prices, Congress followed suit by allowing a drilling moratorium to lapse."

We now have 8 months of evidence that the petrified remains of Keynesianism, dusted off from 1932 and re-animated as the Obama Porkulus/Stimulus plan is failing miserably. The Congress and the President show an almost imperial disdain for the American middle class. The President and the First Lady jet off to New York for a date night at enormous expense. The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Democrat Charlie Rangel, is knee deep in a putrid swamp of ethics violations. Our very own Marie Antoinette, Nancy Pelosi is cheerleader of a headlong shift towards Marxism, a confiscation of property, and redistribution while crushing the spirit of America’s entrepreneurial class.

*Not all of that shale oil can be extracted using current technology. Experts tell me that today's drillers might be able to get at 500 billion to 700 billion barrels. Still, when you consider that Saudi Arabia's known reserves are an estimated 250 billion barrels, that is a lot of black gold.

A review of Mr. Obama's calendar as posted on the White House Website, shows that the president failed to hold even one meeting with his highly touted Economic policy adviser, Gene Sperling, appointed earlier this year. Although, the Vice President, Joe Biden, conducted 6 meetings with Mr. Sperling on March 29 and 30, on April 15, 24 and 28 and on May 4th. The Vice President's meetings also inlcuded OMB director, Jacob Lew. However, Mr. Obama is not mentioned as meeting with either of these principle players on his economic team, despite the economy's poor performance.

Yesterday, we reported that Mr. Obama doesn't work very much, according to the White House website. In May, the president worked less than 4 hours a day when in Washington. A close look at Mr. Obama's work habits suggest a deeply disengaged President.

At the President's press conference today, Mr. Obama made frequent pointed references that Congress needs to "do its job." He also implied that he was hard at work, in Washington and the Congress should be too. An analysis of Mr. Obama's published work schedule raises some questions about the actual level of presidential exertion.

According to the White House, the President doesn't work all that much. During the month of May, which included 21 working days, President Obama claims he worked about 92 hours (91.95 to be exact). That's according to the White House schedule, posted on the whitehouse.gov Website. That equates to an exhausting 4.4 hours per day. Excluding his grueling G8 summit travels during the week of May 23 (when he was forced to endure eight hour work days!), Mr. Obama worked an average of 3.25 hours per day when at the White House in May.

Indeed, the President's schedule is so thin, the White House Communications team sees it necessary to include the Vice President's meetings, when he subs for the President* for padding. For example, on May 3rd and May 17th, Vice President Biden held working breakfast meetings at 7:45 am with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in the President's stead.

On May 17th, the President started his day at a leisurly 10:30 am, when he received his Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB), almost three hours after his 20 year older Vice President began his day.

That same day, the president worked a full 4.0 hours, which included a 65 minute meeting (from 11:15 am to 12:20 pm) with His Majesty, the King of Jordan, a critical ally in the middle east. Sadly, the King did not rate a presidential luncheon, which Mr. Obama had with his overworked VP at 12:30.

It is interesting to note that the President did not meet at all with his OMB Director, Jacob Lew or his newly appointed Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Gene Sperling; while the Vice President met with both men on May 3. The President had only one meeting in May with Treasury Secretary Geithner, on the 19th. That day, the president worked a full 3.5 hours.

May 3rd was also notable as it included Mr. Obama's only Cabinet meeting, which lasted a full 90 minutes, assuming there was a lunch break. In fairness, May 3rd was Mr. Obama's busiest day at the White House, where he worked seven hours, including a 3-hour awards dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in DC.

The next day, the President took it easy, working for only 2.5 hours. In fact, he had no scheduled activities between 11:30 and 3:00 pm, at which time he hosted a reception to celebrate Jewish-American Heritage Month, which does not count as actual work, since it is also political. At 4:30, he met with Prince Charles, but sadly the Prince of Wales did not rate a dinner either.

The president met with unnamed "Senior Advisers" seven times in May for a period we estimate at around one hour each (based on book-ended meeting start and end times).

One of the President's least busy days was May 5th, when his only actual work included laying a wreath at the 9-11 memorial and meeting with relatives of the fallen from that tragic event. That day, the president clocked 1.25 hours of work. Mr. Obama worked 1.5 hours on Friday, May 13th and for 2 hours on the following Monday, May 16.

As an aside, Mr. Obama met most frequently with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates; hosting him twice during the month, on the 3rd and the 17th. Conversely, the President had not one official meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the most senior Cabinet officer.

A spreadsheet of the President's schedule from May is posted here. For calculation purposes, I excluded all travel time, since the President does travel on the most awesome private jet in the world and in the most highly customized limousines, no one could seriously call that "work." The calculations also required some interpretation, for example we excluded his visit to the Allison Transmission facility in Indiana as a political event, it didn't matter much as he was only on the ground in Indiana for just over 85 minutes. We also excluded his reception for the National Teacher of the Year, which is his political base and the famed poetry night the First Lady put together. We did include the National Hispanic prayer breakfast. We thought we'd throw him a bone.

Perhaps a member of the press might quiz the administration on the perceived paucity of presidential activity. An analysis of his G8 summit work schedule is forthcoming.

*So desperate are they for something to count, the Communications team also list Press Secretary Jay Carney's daily briefings as if they were among the President's activities.
