The reasons for a woman wanting breast augmentation can be many and varied. While the media quite often implies that breast enlargement surgery is carried out for vain or appearance enhancing reasons, many women seek breast enlargement surgery for health, well-being and reconstructive reasons.

The thought of a breast enlargement procedure can seem daunting and unfortunately, some myths do exist about what it involves. Here, we provide an accurate account of what is involved…

What is it?

Augmentation Mammoplasty is the medical term for breast enlargement. This procedure may be sought by women who feel that their breast size is too small or have altered in shape over time. Also, a number of women recovering from a mastectomy or other trauma, seek a reconstruction of the breast.

Regardless of the reason, breast enlargement surgery carries minimal risk of side effects, so long as it is performed by a reputable, qualified and experienced plastic surgeon.

How is it done?

Anaesthesia is given to all patients undergoing breast augmentation and typically, a general anaesthetic is given so that the patient is ‘put to sleep’ for the duration of the procedure.

Implants are used to increase breast size and generally speaking, these are made of either saline or silicone. Insertion of implants can be done via a range of different approaches:

Through the nipple

Under the breast

Through the armpit

Through the navel

There are benefits and limitations for each of these approaches and the approach used will be determined by the surgeon with specific reference to your body type.

Regardless of the approach used to insert the implant, it will be positioned in a pocket amid layers of tissue and the incision will be closed with sutures. Gauze is also used to facilitate fast and effective healing.

The time taken to perform the surgery depends on the approach that is used.

What else should I know about breast enlargement surgery and its effects?

Many women are interested to know the effect of breast enlargement on breast feeding. On many occasions, the surgery and subsequent changes to the breast do not have a negative impact on breast feeding, but some women do encounter problems. It is important that any woman interested in breast augmentation surgery and the possibility of breast feeding in the future, discusses this with their surgeon.

Following breast enlargement surgery, mammograms can be a little more difficult. When implants are present it can be more difficult to evaluate and assess breast tissue. Any woman who has had breast augmentation should make their doctor or radiographer aware of this, particularly when screening processes such as mammography are undertaken.

Breast augmentation surgery is quite a popular and common procedure. Women want to change or correct their bust size for a variety of reasons and to achieve particular outcomes. While breast enlargement surgery is generally accepted as being quite safe, it is vital that women contemplating the operation are well informed about what is involved, the recommended approach and any complications that may occur. Finally, it is also imperative that the surgery is carried out by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon with whom the patient feels comfortable and safe.

As is the case with any surgery, breast augmentation surgery can leave you with some pain, scars and distress. However, there are a number of ways to address these concerns and facilitate a faster and more comfortable recovery. By planning ahead and utilising tools and the recommendations of your surgeon, your recovery from a breast enhancement will be all the more speedy and less complicated.

Many surgeons offer their patients instructions for post-operative care that assist them to heal and recover well. Changes to diet and lifestyle are recommended for some patients and as rest is an important part of any person’s recovery, ensuring that you have a reserve of necessary supplies can be incredibly helpful.

The following things are recommended for people who have undergone breast augmentation and other types of cosmetic surgery:

Cold compress – You can of course use gel packs that are especially designed to work as a cold compress or you can even use a packet of frozen vegetables or ice to create your own! No matter what you use, a cold compress is effective in helping to reduce inflammation and regular application can be soothing.

Irrigation bottle – Occasionally, wounds or scars heal slowly and are prone to bleeding or opening up as recovery occurs. An irrigation bottle can help to manage the bleeding and ensure that the area remains clean and free of infection.

Sterile gauze pads – Gauze pads can help to keep scars and wounds free of infection. Able to be pressed delicately on the affected areas as required, having these readily available lessens the need for bandages and band aids.

Sleeping aids – One of the most critical components of your recovery is sleep. As you recover from your surgery, you may find that you take many naps throughout the day and that these provide effective relief from fatigue and discomfort. Your physician may prescribe you some sleeping tablets but otherwise natural sleeping aids and relaxing tea can help you to rest and relax.

Linen – It may sound strange to include linen in your list of recovery essentials. However, bedding may need to be changed more often after surgery so it can be wise to have some spare sets of sheets and pillow covers on hand.

Disposable cloths – This can be readily and quickly clean up a wound. Disposable cloths can offer a great and cheap way of keeping your skin and the wound clean.

Handheld showerhead – You may find that following your breast augmentation it is difficult to move stretch and extend, particularly while bathing. Having a handheld showerhead on hand can make it much more easy to shower and wash your hair without requiring exertion or extra movement.

Aids for relaxation – Aromatherapy, relaxing music, teas and other aids can help to counter the stress, tension and comfort that you may experience. Aside from comfort, relaxation practices can help to strengthen your immune system and hasten the healing process as well as help you to sleep.

Nutrition – To recover well you will need to take care of your digestive system. It is suggested that you eat soft foods such as rice and porridge, as well as taking in many of your nutrients in liquid form – smoothies and fruit juice are good examples of this and will provide you with plenty of energy.

Listen to the guidance of your surgeon who will give you particular advice about your situation and how your recovery can be hastened and as comfortable as possible.

There are countless reasons why women choose to have breast augmentation. Some women are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts, some women have one breast that is noticeably larger than the other, some women desire a reconstruction after a mastectomy and others are unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts after breastfeeding their children. Regardless of the reasons women have breast surgery, it is apparent that for many women doing so can help to increase self-esteem and confidence.

As women decide to undertake breast augmentation, they do so with a range of different results in mind. Some women want to see remarkable, obvious changes while others want the changes to be more minor and discreet. All women need to be equipped with credible information prior to their operation and should feel comfortable discussing the process, issues and concerns with their surgeon.

The surgery…

Although the types of implants available and the techniques for inserting them vary, all augmentation surgeries are performed with anaesthesia – usually general anaesthetic but in a very small number of cases, local anaesthetic under heavy sedation.

Explained in the most basic way possible, the surgeon making an incision, inserts and positions the implant and then closes the incision with stitches. The ultimate result and success of the surgery is determined by three factors: the type of implant that is used, where the incision occurs and how the implant is placed.

The implants…

Today, implants consist of a silicone shell that is filled with either saline or silicone. While silicone has been used since the 1960s and was banned in 1992, silicone gel-filled implants can still be used for reconstructive purposes or for replacement of implants in women that already have them.

Considerable research has occurred in this area and the use of silicone gel-filled implants seems set to increase.

Silicone implants…

Implants that are filled with silicone gel deliver a natural shape and appearance post surgery. The gel that is used is designed not to spill or ‘bleed’ out should the implant be ruptured and silicone gel-filled implants reduce the risk of infection and other complications that were associated with earlier silicone implants.

Saline implants…

Saline implants are designed to provide either a round or natural (anatomical) shape. These implants come in smooth and textured varieties. Many women and their surgeons believe that smooth implants are superior in terms of natural feel and appearance and are less likely to ripple than their textured counterparts.

Conversely, textured implants are understood to be firmer, more likely to stay in place and less likely to harden. However, there is some conjecture about this.

Sites of incision…

There are four locations on the body in which an incision is made to insert breast implants. These are:

The areola

Lower crease of the breast

Belly button

Under arm

Different techniques are used and preferred by different surgeons. It is advisable to discuss the different options with your surgeon.

Placement of implants…

Breast implants are either placed below the muscle (sub-muscular) or over the muscle (sub-glandular).

When implants are placed below the muscle, fewer complications are often experienced and mammograms are often easier to carry out. However, sub-glandular placements carry their own advantages being: faster and more efficient insertion and a recovery period that is typically shorter.

A person’s exercise routine and the existing amount of skin tissue can influence which placement is best. Of course, the options for placement of the implant should be discussed with your surgeon well in advance of your breast augmentation operation.

Breast enhancement and breast augmentation operations are often performed and have the potential to greatly improve the appearance of the breasts and a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. With incredible advances in breast implants and technology, breast augmentation surgery today produces some excellent and life-changing results.

Although it is a frequently performed procedure, myths abound about breast enlargement and breast augmentation that only serve to frighten many people. As well as frightening so many, these myths also create stigma around breast surgery that is quite inaccurate and unwarranted. To set the record straight, in this article we address ten of the most common myths about breast enhancement and explain why they are false!

Myth #1: It is not safe to use silicone implants

In recent times, there has been an incredible amount of research into the safety and effectiveness of silicone implants. Silicone is often recognised as the material most compatible with the biology and physiology of human beings. International testing, clinical studies and prevalence data helps to inform specialists of the safety of implants made from this material.

Silicone gel filled implants are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia and, from 2000 onwards, have been registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Myth #2: Breast implants feel unnatural

To some, breast implants do not feel as soft and flexible as natural breasts. When breast implants feel hard, this is a natural result of scar tissue forming around the foreign material. This occurrence is not particular to breast implants; this hardening also occurs around hip and other joint replacements.

In the case of breasts, it is worth noting that even if the breast does feel harder than usual, 90% of women claim that they are happy with the results.

Myth #3: Implants cause breast cancer

Plenty of research is devoted to this area. Evidence suggests that women with breast implants have no greater chance of developing breast cancer.

Myth #4: Breast implants make breastfeeding impossible

Evidence also shows that breast implants generally do not impact on a woman’s ability to breastfeed. Successful breastfeeding is dependent on a range of factors and whether or not a woman is able to breastfeed her baby is usually not influenced by whether or not she has breast implants.

Research also shows that breastfed children are not exposed to excessive amounts of silicone.

Myth #5: Detection of breast cancer is more difficult when a woman has breast implants

It is true that a mammogram is made more difficult when a woman has breast implants; however, radiologists are well practiced in mammography with women who have implants. It is important that women with implants advise the radiographer and their doctor prior to an examination.

Regardless of whether a woman has had a breast enlargement or reconstruction, they should regularly examine their breasts to feel for lumps and changes and should have their breasts examined at least once every two years by a physician. Should a woman notice any lumps or changes, or have any concerns, they should consult their doctor immediately.

Myth #6: Breast augmentation is painful and requires a lot of recovery time

The experience is different for each person. Pain medication is likely to be prescribed and administered as required after breast surgery and the subsequent recovery time varies from individual to individual.

Many women are out of bed and able to care for themselves just a few days after the operation and many return to work within two weeks.

Intense, high impact exercise is best avoided for at least six weeks after the operation.

Myth #7: Scars from breast surgery are obvious

The site of the incision to insert breast implants is made either under the breast, under the arm, through the belly button or around the nipple. The surgeon will advise his or her patient of the best place for an incision to be made so that minimal obvious scarring occurs.

Myth #8: Breast implants are obvious

Many breast enhancements or reconstructions produce a natural, subtle result. In determining the appropriate size, quality surgeons will factor in the woman’s desires, weight, height, natural breast size and shape.

Myth #9: Implants cause the breasts to sag

Breasts with implants will sag no more quickly than breasts without implants. The sagging of breasts is due to gravity, weight and the breakdown of elastin and collagen that naturally occurs with age. To best prevent or delay the breasts from sagging, supportive and well-fitted bras should be worn.

Myth #10: Breast implants need to be frequently replaced

Many breast implants have a lifespan of 25 years or more. Some implants may have to be removed or replaced – the lifespan of implants varies.

Although a number of myths exist about breast implants, many are false and misleading. While all operations carry a level of risk, breast implants and the associated surgery is found to be safe and life enhancing for many women.

Chances are, most people think they have some idea of what is involved with breast enlargement surgery. Most often, people believe that those who have this surgery do so for reasons of vanity but this perspective overlooks the range of reasons that people elect or need to have breast augmentation. There are plenty of myths that exist about breast augmentation and the surgery involved; here we provide reliable information about the surgery.

An overview of breast augmentation surgery:

Depending on the reasons for the breast augmentation and the complexity of the individual’s circumstances, breast augmentation procedures can be performed in an outpatient situation, but are most usually performed in a hospital.

It is possible for some breast surgeries to be done with only local anaesthetic (where only the breast area is numbed), but most are done using a general anaesthetic where the person is asleep.

The most common type of breast augmentation is breast enlargement using breast implants and the length of this surgery can be anything from one hour to several hours. The time taken is dependent on whether the implant is positioned behind (sub muscular) or in front (sub glandular) of the chest muscle and, of course, whether both or only one breast is being enlarged.

Many people who have a breast enlargement are eager to know how long they will need to spend in hospital. The answer is that the length of the hospital stay will depend on the type of surgery, whether there are any complications that have occurred following the operation and the person’s overall health and well-being.

The best advice for anyone contemplating or definitely taking this surgery is to have a detailed conversation with their surgeon about the operation itself – the time it will take, the recovery that can be expected and also options for pain relief and side effects.

What you can expect from the procedure:

If you are having a breast enlargement, or a breast reconstruction, it is important that you have realistic expectations of the outcome. Many people find that it is beneficial to speak with others who have had the surgery (perhaps even done by the same surgeon), but everyone should be mindful that every person’s results are different – your surgery may not lead to the same results as those of someone else.

The results that you can expect are dependent on a range of factors. These include:

Your general health

Your body shape and the structure, size and shape of your chest

Potential for rapid and effective healing (this may be influenced by treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, medications, smoking and use of alcohol)

The likelihood that you will bleed profusely

Any prior surgeries you have had on your breasts or chest

Risk of infection

Experience and skill of the surgeon and surgical team that perform your operation

Size and the type of implant that is used

The surgical procedure that is used

Some level of scarring is to be expected with breast enlargement or breast augmentation. Discussion with your surgeon prior to the operation should also include a description of the placement, size, visibility and appearance of the scars that may remain. It is worth remembering that the scars of many women fade considerably with time but this is also dependent on the colour and pigmentation of the individual’s skin.

After the operation:

Ask your doctor to tell you about the recovery process after surgery. They should forewarn you of complications that may occur and how long they expect your recovery process to take.

Like many types of surgery, breast enlargement or breast augmentation surgery can produce pain, swelling, bruising and tenderness. The length of time that these complications last varies from person to person, but they almost always subside with time.

You are likely to be prescribed medications for pain and nausea. A number of women also experience fever, bleeding, warmth and/or redness of the breast which can be indicators of infection and it is important that you receive information about wound healing and care.

A special postoperative bra may be used, as may compression bandages or a sports bra for additional support. Many women are able to return to work after just a few days, but this should always be at the recommendation of your doctor. All strenuous activities that raise the heart rate and blood pressure should be avoided for at least a few weeks.

When done by a skilled and experienced surgeon, many people enjoy excellent results from their breast enlargement or other breast augmentation surgery. It is useful to be aware of what occurs before, during and after the operation so that you can take the necessary steps and feel prepared to encourage speedy and effective healing.

If you are thinking about getting cosmetic or plastic surgery, there is one thing you must do before anything else, and that is research. Before you even start thinking about your desired look whether that is breast enlargementor rhinoplasty, you must first find out who performs the procedure you want. It is always best to go with a specialist in the field, rather than a ‘jack of all trades’ of cosmetic procedures.

Get online and start reading up about any societies, organisations and certifying bodies that exist in your state and country for plastic and cosmetic surgeons. Something your average person doesn’t know is that it is not a legal requirement for a practising surgeon to be educated or experienced in the field of cosmetic surgery. You wouldn’t want a GP performing your procedure would you? You probably wouldn’t even want a newly set up surgeon performing your procedure. Cosmetic surgery is by definition an aesthetic enhancement to your body, so outside of any medical risks, you want to make sure you are going with a surgeon that achieve the best results.

Take your pen and paper with you into the consultation and write down the answers. Usually during medical consultations you feel very nervous and anxious and this can affect your recall. Don’t be afraid to write down your questions and take notes on the answers, because you will want to do further research on this when you get home. Any confident doctor be will be happy for you to ask questions and will actually encourage you. A lot of the answers will seem baffling and mean nothing to you until you take home the information and read up about it.

Question 1- What boards or organisations are you part of?

Question 2 – What do you specialise in?

Question 3- How many times have you performed this procedure?

Question 4 – Can I see photographic evidence of your work?

After these basic questions that will determine if your surgeon is reputable and capable to perform your chosen procedure, you must then find out about the clinic practices. Who else is present during surgery to assist and are they qualified? What kind of anaesthetic do they use? How long is recovery?

Question 5 – What medical staff will be assisting with my procedure?

Question 6 – Where will the procedure be performed, can I see it?

Question 7 – Who will administer and what type of anaesthesia will be used during my procedure?

Now that you know the level of skill and ability your surgeon has, you should now also feel comfortable with the level of medical care and equipment in the clinic he or she operates in.

The next round of questions relates to your specific procedure. There are many things you will need to know and understand about certain types of cosmetic procedures.

Question 8 – What are the risks of surgery?

Question 9 – Is my request achievable and realistic?

Question 10 – What is the level of complication with my procedure?

If you ask these ten questions, whether it’s a simple treatment or something more serious like a breast augmentation, you can go ahead knowing your surgeon and the practices are sound and that you will get excellent results and medical care for the service you are paying for.

Breast enlargement is a serious thing to consider in the life of anyone who is preparing to have their breasts cosmetically enhanced. The entire process is a long, slow period that begins with your research and ends with your new body.

Due to the risks and cost involved, consultation is a comprehensive procedure that will allow you to decide if surgery is what you really want. Once you have made your decision and chosen your doctor you are then ready to move onto the next step.

Deciding on the size of your new breasts might seem like a simple choice but actually there are a few things to consider before you make your mind up. Questions like what size bra do you hope to fill out, what shape breasts do you want or whether your chosen size will suit your body type and shape?

Any good surgeon or clinic will have procedures that guide you through this sensitive process. They will ask you the questions you will need to think about and they will provide you with pre-consultation documentation and questionnaires that will help you start thinking about your breast enlargement seriously.

Many clinics will first assess you, to see if you are an appropriate candidate for breast enlargement. This is usually done via email using photos you have taken of your own breasts. You must then tell them what you would like to achieve by having cosmetic surgery. While they are assessing your situation, they will ask you to explore your visual objective in the comfort of your own home. Imagining how big a 300CC or 400CC implant might look on your body is not something most of us could successfully achieve, so it is suggested that you experiment with physical representations of your desired implants.

Exploring your sizing options at home might go something like this:

 You will need:

A bra you plan to fill, after your surgery

A measuring cup

1 kg uncooked rice

A multi pack of nylon stockings

Fill a measuring jug or cup with some rice. 350ml will roughly match a 350CC implant.

Transfer the rice to a nylon stocking that has been snipped off – just the ankle area.

Tie a knot in the end to secure the rice.

Make another ‘rice bag’ with the other bit of stocking.

Put on your dream bra and fill each side with the rice bags.

Wear these bags for a few hours each day.

Experiment with different sizes and amounts.

The point of this exercise is to get you feeling confident about the size you want and how it might feel on your body. By filling a bra, temporarily, with these rice bags you will get to know how you might look with the size breasts you desire and you can even try on different clothes to make sure the size is right for the look you want.

When it comes to your consultation day, you will then be prepared to discuss with your doctor the size you want for your breast augmentation.

Botox and dermal fillers are the hottest topics in the anti wrinkle market. In fact there is more conflicting information about these products than just about any other topic and it might be difficult for you to make up your mind on which way to go.

Some sites will attempt to play on your sense of guilt by recommending you avoid any form of enhancement treatment, and that you accept your age gracefully without complaint. On the other hand, other sites expound the virtues and benefits of cosmetic surgery and dermal filler or antiwrinkle injection treatments that have demonstrated great success.

The bottom line is that no one can make a decision about your body except you. You might decide that you deserve to look your best at all times. After all we live in a world where looks play a large part in our self-esteem, confidence and how well we are regarded by others. We can argue for as long as we like about the fairness of this, but the fact remains that looks are important.

Once you have surmounted the contrary arguments, take a look at how successful some products are and make up your own mind.

There are many smile line and filler products around but those that are treated through injections seem to have the best results. So, it is a fact that not all facial fillers need to be scary. There is plenty of evidence from doctors and patients alike who have experienced excellent results.

Let’s take a look at some comments from patients who have had happy results with their treatment.

Most experts advise patients to be conservative in the strength and amount of work that is performed on them. They point out that there are well publicised cases of people who have gone too far or who have authorised untried treatments. This means that you should seek expert advice and treatment before making any decision.

Light facial peels with a little botulinum toxin between the eyebrows has had excellent results for many patients.

Temporary dermal fillers such as Juvederm have a very low chance of forming lumps or bumps. They usually last for 12 months which is a pretty good result.

Some newer semi permanent fillers last up to a year, albeit with some limitations in application. Experience has shown that these fillers are best injected in successive sessions, with small amounts added each time. Also, they appear to work better in thicker tissues such as the chin and laugh lines.

The bottom line on fillers is to take it easy and only use reputable injectors, or professionals who have had a lot of experience. This is the only way you can be sure to get the results you want with minimal risk.

There is no doubt the dermal fillers have a place in the anti wrinkle market and that they provide a safe option for most people. Check with your cosmetic professional before you make any final decision.

Botox and dermal fillers are two of the most popular anti wrinkle treatment modes. In fact, the anti ageing industry has been in overdrive over the last 10 years creating a myriad of anti wrinkle products that come and go as often as the latest diet.

Dermal filler injections are probably the most commonly known but not necessarily the best understood method of treating wrinkles. Fillers work by filling the creases and achieving a smoother, younger and youthful look. It is a longer term solution and continuous injections may be required but the results are undeniably good.

There are some further facts about filler injections.

The use of injections has accelerated over the last 10 years because it has proven to be the most effective anti wrinkle treatment available.

Filler injections are a cheaper alternative to surgical interventions such as a facelift.

Some people suffer allergic reactions to the product, but this can be tested by professionals. In fact any unwanted side effects usually wear off soon after injections.

Injections are contraindicated if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Anti wrinkle Botox injection procedures, or dermal fillers , are simple to administer and have great medium-term results.

An injection underneath the skin will smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face and last for up to 120 days.

In most cases anaesthetic cream is not required, just a simple ice treatment can numb the skin sufficiently to avoid any discomfort from the injection. Depending upon muscle bulk, multiple injections are used for various procedures. For instance forehead treatments take between 6 and 16 units whilst crow’s feet removal will take 6 to 12 units on each side of the face.

If you think you might be a candidate for breast enlargement surgery there are a couple of things you should think about before making your final decision.

First of all you need to reassure yourself about the safety of the procedures involved. The best way to do this is to talk it over with your doctor, and eventually the surgeon who is going to perform your operation.

You don’t need to worry though, procedures in Australia are relatively safe and, when you are in the hands of a trained professional surgeon for that field.

Having overcome that hurdle, you can now consider exactly what you need. There are several steps you should take before deciding to proceed.

First you need to discuss with your surgeon the technicalities of your enhancement. As you would be well aware, every human body is different, and having your breast size altered is not a simple, straightforward process. You have to decide how you want your implant to look and decide upon the shape and size as well. Remember to be guided by the professional advice provided by your surgeon because, as an experienced professional, he or she can tell you what will work best for your particular request. This is one of the ways you will end up with a happy result.

The next important matter to consider is the cost. Breast augmentation surgery depends upon a huge range of factors and costs can only be determined on an individual basis. The fee could be anywhere from $9000-$20,000 including the cost of implants, surgery and anaesthesia. Do not be disturbed by the range of costs discussed here. Your surgeon is the only one who can give you an accurate estimate and, who knows, you might be pleasantly surprised. Because this is a cosmetic operation, you should check with your health insurance to see whether you are covered. Most funds do not provide full coverage for cosmetic operations, so this will be a decision only you can make. In some cases, it might be possible to enter into a payment plan so you can pay for your surgery over an extended timeframe. This will certainly be easier on your cash flow, but in any case only you can decide. Some lending institutions also provide special credit facilities by way of personal loans. This is an avenue you should investigate if you feel the need to. Remember that if you try to cut back on costs you could compromise the result of the operation, so the best advice is to only make a final decision when you know you can afford it.

These two points are not the end of your decision-making process, but you will be closer to a decision once you have covered them. Breast enlargement surgery is a serious consideration, and you should only make a final decision when you have all the facts in place.
