<p style="text-align: justify;">Production of RCC is done according to the Client’s schedule and request. The concrete is produced continuously. However there are at times some breaks during operation. Some of these breaks are planned, like planned stops of concrete placement, regular maintenance of the equipment, meals, interferences with other activities in the Project, etc. Some others are not; for example, bad weather conditions, power cuts, etc.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The production at the RCC plant consists of the production of the following sub-systems:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">(a) The water supply system.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Water is pumped from the river and cleaned and treated with a sedimentation and filtration system and is delivered to the main storage tank at a rate of 200 m3 per hour. It is then stored in the main storage tanks at the plant which has a storage capacity of 300,000 gals. The treated water is delivered to the plant accordingly.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">(b) The cooling system.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The clear water that is delivered to the plant is chilled by the three Water Chillers and the temperature of water is lowered down to 4 deg C and pumped to the wet belt where the aggregates which are transported by a very slow conveyor are sprayed with chilled water. The dirty water is collected at the sedimentation tank and the sediments are separated and cleaned water is again recycled back to the water tank where the water is chilled and pumped back to the wet belt again for cooling and cleaning the aggregates. Additionally two ice plants are constructed inside the plant with a total capacity of 200 tons per hour and a variable amount if ice is added to the mixing concrete accordingly to get the required temperature of concrete.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">(c) The conveying system.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The aggregates are transported by two lines of inclined and horizontal conveyors with a speed of about 1.67 m/s.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Three sizes of coarse aggregates are loaded onto the horizontal conveyor belt each separated by a spacing of 75 secs to deliver 400 tons per hour for each line. For the two lines the quantity that can be delivered is about 800 tons per hour, meeting the expected peak production demand. The aggregates are then transported by inclined conveyors and collected inside the inline silos by means of the distributing belts which deliver the different sizes of aggregates to different compartment inside the silos. The fine aggregate is separately transported by a different line of conveyor to its own compartment inside the silo. The whole system is automatically controlled from a control room.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">(d) Storage and conveyance of cementitious materials.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Cementatious materials such as cement and pozzolan which are used in the RCC are produced and obtained from different locations and transported to the plant and are stored in 10 x 1000 ton cement and pozzolan silos.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">They are conveyed to the 150 ton working silos from the plant by means of pneumatic blowing system which has a total capacity of 120 tons per hour and then delivered from the working silos to the mixers by means of screw conveyors.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">(e) Concrete Mixing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">According to the mix design, the aggregates are automatically weighed on the weighing belts underneath the inline silos. Ice is weighed and added whenever necessary at the end of the weighing belt. Cement, Pozzolan, water and admixture are weighed separately and fed into the mixers. A very uniform concrete with a temperature of not more than 18 deg C and consistency (VeBe time) of 8 to 12 secs is produced to deliver to the placement site by trucks or by the RCC conveyor system.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">1.       Base concrete substrate must be free from all projections and depressions. The surface must be reasonably smooth and leveled to the required gradient as designed for.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">2.       The area must be free from dust, debris, oil and other contamination. All cracks, pot holes and honeycomb are to be made good prior to the waterproofing application.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">3.       The substrate to be covered with screed shall be well wetted before the application of screed..</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Sarnafil G 476-12 Green Roof System</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">4.       Unroll <strong>Sarnafil G 476-12</strong>, fiberglass reinforced PVC waterproofing membrane, loosely laid over the substrate or separation layer and hot air welded on the overlap 80mm wide, making sure that the overlap area must be clean and dry.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">5.       For hand welding, use the Leister Triac hand welder, 40mm wide nozzle for straight weld and 20mm wide nozzle for corners and detail work. The three stages are:-</p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Spot weld the overlap.</li>
<li>Pre-weld: Weld the rear overlap area so that a 35mm opening remains for the finishing weld.</li>
<li>Final weld: Sarnafil PVC hand roller should be guided at a distance of 30mm parallel to the air outlet of the welding nozzle. Always roll the hand roller fully across the seam.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">6.       <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Testing of welded seams:-</span></p>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Visual seam check: Shiny surface and even quality of welding beads.</li>
<li>Mechanical seam check: Use a screwdriver to slide along the welded seams to check for voids and any welding defect.</li>
<li>Peeling test: At the overlapped cut the membrane into 50mm width strip and firmly peel it. Tearing point should be located beyond the effective welding seam.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">7.       For perimeter fixation around the parapet wall, <strong>Sarnafil G 476-12</strong> membrane must be secured with Sarnafil U bars and PVC welding cord against tearing and peeling off by wind uplift. Perimeter fixation shall not be required when the garden built-up is above 300mm thick.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Upstands, Flashings &amp; Roof Details</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">8.       Followed by the upturn membrane, <strong>Sarnafil G 476-12</strong> hot-air welded overlap 40mm covering the Sarnafil U bars and fully adhered to the parapet wall with Sarnafil approved adhesive.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">9.       Sarnafil G 476-12 can be terminated with metal strip fastened through the membrane and sealed with an approved sealant at a height at least 150mm. Or alternatively, make a groove line by saw cutting on the required height and tucked in with Sarnametal sheet (PVC coated) where the upturn membrane <strong>Sarnafil G 476-12</strong> can be welded on it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">10.   For corners, vent pipes, drains and other roof details, please refer to Sarnafil installation handbook procedures.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Water Ponding Test</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">11.   Carry out flood test 48 hours minimum after completion of the waterproofing works. Restrict water run-off from membrane area by plugging drains and creating dams or dikes. Flood restricted area to depth of about 100 mm and maintain at this depth for 48 hours. Any punctured or defective areas shall be made good by an approved method and retested.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">12.   The membrane shall be cleaned and inspected before proceeding with the remaining built-up protection measure.<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1404" title="green-roof-2" src="http://civilengineerblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/green-roof-2-281x300.gif" alt="Sarnafil Green Roof" width="281" height="300" /></p>

<h4 style="text-align: justify;">1. Handling People</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">An effective leader should be able to motivate and manage the members of their team in such a way that they will want to better their performance. For a team to be effective, everybody must be entirely committed and determined to achieve the targets of the project. It is the leader&#8217;s job to encourage their staff into this type of dedication and to ensure they are motivated. The perfect way to achieve this is by knowing the individuals on your team.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Materials Used in RCC mix design</h3>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>a) Cementitious materials:</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Cement content is generally low (typically 70 to 130 kg/m3). Any kind of Portland Cement (but low heat cement is a preferred type when its is available)<br />
<em><strong></strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><em><strong>Fly Ash</strong></em>: Class F pozzolans are preferred. When used pozzolans, may replace up to 80 % of cement content.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>b) Aggregates:</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Selection of aggregates and control of aggregates quality is essential. Aggregates shall meet ASTM C33 standard.<br />
<strong><em></em></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><em>Coarse aggregates:</em></strong><br />
Most of project use a coarse aggregates with a Nominal Maximal Size Aggregate (NMSA) between 37.5 and 75mm. The thickness of placement layer shall be more than 3 times the NMSA.<br />
<strong><em></em></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><em>Fine aggregates:</em></strong><br />
The grading of fine aggregates strongly influence paste requirements and compactibility of RCC. It also affects water and cementitious material requirements needed to fill the aggregates voids and coat aggregate particles.<br />
<strong><em></em></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><em>Other aggregates: </em></strong>Fines (crusher fines…):<br />
In low cement content mixtures, supplements fines (material passing 0.075 mm sieve) are usually required. Fines quantities is generally 5% of total aggregates</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">c) Admixtures:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Admixtures for RCC needed mostly for set retardation (and plasticizing) effect. Water Reducer Type D (WR + retarder)<br />
WR use is beneficial for strength gain, and retardation which can be required very extended. Main Sika Product for RCC: <strong>Plastiment TM 25</strong> specifically designed for RCC.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Mix design considerations:</h3>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">a) Workability / Consistency:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Measured with a Vebe vibrating table (ASTM C 1170).<br />
The test principle is to measure the time for the concrete to be consolidated by vibrating in a cylindrically shaped mold. The longer the time, the drier/lesser workable is the concrete. Vebe times of RCC mixtures is generally from 10 to 40 seconds. Comparison of concrete consistency measured by slump and Vebe apparatus. ACI 211.3R</p>

<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>b) Strength:</strong></h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Design strength of RCC dam is often based on long term strength (90 days, 120 days or even 1 year!). The strength of RCC is a function of w/c ratio only for mixture with Vebe time of ~ 15 to 20 sec. range. For drier mix, the strength is more controlled by the moisture-density relationship.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If water content is less than optimum =&gt; voids in structure, poorly compacted concrete with loss in density and strengths.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Compressive strength of RCC is usually measured by testing cylinder (15cm diameter,30cm long).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Strength measured on cores is also possible.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">d) Segregation:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is necessary to produce mixture with minimum tendency to segregate =&gt; Aggregates (especially with NSMA &gt; 37.5mm) shall be well graded.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Higher cement content mixture are generally more cohesive =&gt; less tendency to segregate.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">e) Permeability</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Mixture with paste volume of 18 to 22% by mass shall provide suitable level of impermeability. Higher cementitious content or high workability mixes that bond well to fresh lift joints will produce watertightness.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For lower cementitious content mix, and/or low workability mix, a bedding mortar between lifts may be needed.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">f) Heat Generation:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is an important factor considering the massive structures. Limitation of cement content, and/or use of fly ash is helping reduce heat generation.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">g) Durability:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">RCC should be free of damaging effects of alkali-aggregate reactivity</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Quality control of RCC concrete:</h4>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Vebe Consistency Test</li>
<li>Density and air voids tests.</li>
<li>Moisture/water content tests.</li>
<li>Cement content evaluation</li>
<li>Temperature monitoring</li>
<li>Test (cylinders) specimens:</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: justify;">- Using modified Vebe apparatus (generally for mix with Vebe up to 20 seconds),</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">- Using of special vibrating hammers</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Beware, because of low early strength of concrete specimens are “fragile”.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Lift-Joint sealing systems:</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Lift joints shall be kept moist before placing next lift and normally do not require special treatment. In some cases, it is required to apply a “flowable” bedding mortar which need to be retarded with admixtures.</p>
