On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 210 national organizations, we write to express our strong support for the confirmation of Paul Watford to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. We urge the Senate to vote “yes” on cloture and “yes” on his confirmation.

On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, we write in response to a May 4, 2012 report in The Washington Post that you are preparing a citation of contempt against Attorney General Eric Holder for failing to provide information related to the “Fast and Furious” program. We are deeply troubled by the prospect that the Attorney General will be cited for contempt by your committee, and believe that such action is unwarranted. We urge you to reconsider that decision.

On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 210 national organizations, we strongly urge you to reject the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012 (the Ryan bill). The cuts in the Ryan bill would have a devastating impact on the communities we represent, including young children, students, older people, the jobless, the hungry, and the uninsured. The House Budget Committee has approved a set of spending cuts that range from unwise to downright unconscionable, without seeking any sacrifice from defense contractors, wealthy Americans, or other powerful interests. Therefore, we will include your position on this bill in our voting record for the 112th Congress.

On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 210 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States, we strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 5326, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2013.
On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the undersigned organizations, we thank the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for its commitment to addressing discriminatory barriers to the workplace and strongly support the proposal to update the EEOC’s Enforcement Guidance on the Consideration of Arrest and Conviction Records in Employment Decisions under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Updating the guidance
will help balance the civil rights of workers and the legitimate concerns of employers about safety and security at the workplace.

On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 210 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States, we urge you to support the passage of S.1925, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and vote against any amendments that would weaken this important legislation, including a substitute version of VAWA being offered by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX). VAWA recognizes the pervasive and insidious nature of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and provides local, state and tribal authorities with critical tools to support victims of these crimes. Reauthorization of VAWA will enhance our nation’s ability to prosecute perpetrators of violence, while responding to the needs of victims and survivors.

On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, we write to express our support for the Reed-Landrieu-Levin Amendment to the JOBS Act (H.R. 3606). We oppose H.R. 3606 because, as the experience of the past several years has shown, all Americans have a stake in protecting investors, ensuring transparency, and enforcing market integrity. While the Reed-Landrieu-Levin Amendment does not address every problem with the JOBS Act, it represents a significant improvement over the House-passed bill. We urge you to support cloture on the Reed-Landrieu-Levin Amendment.

The importance of high-quality, objective, and universal ACS data for the civil and human rights community cannot be overstated. For this reason, The Leadership Conference considers a fair and accurate census and comprehensive ACS, which is a part of the decennial census, among the most significant civil rights issues facing the country today. Our wide-ranging efforts to promote equality of representation and economic opportunity are guided significantly by objective, inclusive data on America’s diverse communities and populations. For example, the Voting Rights Act relies on ACS data to make determinations under section 203, which requires jurisdictions with a large population of people who are not yet English language proficient to offer language assistance during the electoral process. Both the government and business sector rely on ACS data to help ensure appropriate employment opportunities for racial minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans.

The civil rights community has long regarded the expansion of minority and female ownership in media as an important goal because of the powerful role the media plays in the democratic process, as well as in shaping perceptions about who we are as individuals and as a nation. Though the most recent numbers available (which are already out of date) demonstrate that ownership diversity is, in the Commission’s own words, “dismal,” the Commission’s notice fails to take into account its new proposal’s impact on ownership diversity.
