Dudley Elementary's GATE Academy

Dudley Elementary has ended its first year implementation of a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Academy. The GATE Academy is a program designed to challenge fourth through sixth grade GATE and high achieving students in the classroom on a daily basis. The classes challenge students to obtain a deeper, more complex understanding of all material presented in class, and specifically to prepare them to be ready for algebra in seventh grade. Teachers use GATE strategies such as compacting, differentiation, depth and complexity, and Blooms Taxonomy questioning in order to provide students with a deeper understanding of the material.

Fourth grade students loop with the same teacher over two years, so remain with the teacher for fifth grade as well. In sixth grade, when students rotate teachers, the GATE and high achieving students are grouped in a way that allows them to continue their progress.

This year, students in the fourth/fifth grade class, completed in-depth artist reports and permanent tile painting, had a visit from Mad Science, made a solar system unit including paper mache models and had students present science lessons throughout the year, created a picket fence representing the growth of California, participated in a webquest on mountain climbing with a field trip to IMAX to see the Climbing Everest movie, had field trips to Coloma and the Gold Bug Mine in Placerville and participated in many more engaging activies.

MHS Friday Night Live

The students at McClellan High School completed an Environmental Community Project. The students started the project in February when they conducted a survey on campus about alcohol abuse among teens in the Antelope community. They found that many of the teens received their alcohol from adults at the local stores. They would find a willing adult who will go in and buy the alcohol for them. This information spear headed a Public Awareness campaign to remind adults not to purchase alcohol for minors. The students held a poster contest to promote the cause. Jessica Mudrenco was the winner with a picture of a martini glass out of words that remind her of alcohol. The students worked together to create a slogan to go with her picture. Jessica was awarded a 2 movie tickets, a $5 gift card to Subway, and a $5 gift card to Jamba Juice for her efforts. The winning poster will be placed in prominent locations in community stores that sell liquor.

In 2008, Mrs. Kim Tricomo, teacher and GATE coordinator at North Country Elementary School, applied for and was awarded a grant from the Sacramento Educational Cable Consortium to purchase the equipment necessary for students to produce their own educational videos. Every year since receiving the grant, students from Mrs. Tricomo’s GATE program have produced educational videos that are submitted to the Sacramento Student Educational Video Awards Competition. Twice, the students have brought home awards. This year, Mrs. Tricomo’s class has submitted 4 DVDs for the SEVAs. To prepare for such filming, she took several of her GATE students to various trainings provided through SECC. Students were able to learn behind the scenes techniques to improved their writing and editing skills. On one such training, Mrs. Tricomo took students Jonathan Jolly, Riley Blackard, and David Duncan to the KVIE TV studio! On March 21, a crew from the consortium was on campus to interview and film the producers of the four videos. Other GATE students involved include: Cheyenne Hilbun, Johnathan Dixon, Cadyn Miller, Kiara Melvin, Carina Garbuzova, and Jaedeme Bumagat. North Country's 5th and 6th graders will be presenting "Aladdin" on Thursday evening on May 3 at 7:00pm. This performance will be held in the Center High School Theater. The Center High School Theater is located at 3111 Center Court Lane. Admission is $5.00. The collected admission helps to buy materials for costumes and set design.

Water Spots Videos Need Your Vote!

High school videos showcase creativity, humor

SACRAMENTO-- Clever narrative, humor and even some animation--those are some of the ingredients found in the nearly 90 videos submitted in the Water Spots video contest, sponsored by the Regional Water Authority (RWA), Sacramento Bee Media in Education and local water providers.

From raps and jingles to serious messages about water scarcity, Sacramento-area high school students showed off their creativity in 30-second public service announcements on outdoor water efficiency.

Celebrity judges narrowed the videos down to 11 finalists,now it's the public's turn to vote for their favorite by Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at www.sacbee.com/mie or http://guide.sacbee.com/2012/04/10/5247/water-spots-voting.html.

The finalists and grand prize winner will be unveiled onSunday, April 29, at 12:25 p.m. on Raley Field's Jumbotron before the Sacramento River Cats game. Winning students and teachers will also get cash prizes. The grand prize winner’s spot will become part of RWA’s 2012 Blue Thumb water efficiency campaign, which encourages Sacramento-area residents to earn their Blue Thumb by using water efficiently outdoors.

In addition to celebrating Water Spots finalists, the Regional Water Authority will launch its 2012 Blue Thumb pledge drive at the April 29 game. Three lucky fans will be selected for a garden hose limbo contest on the field, and one will win a wheelbarrow of gardening equipment and starter plants by taking the Blue Thumb pledge.

Finalist videos were selected based upon creativity, entertainment value, accuracy, originality and incorporation of the water efficiency topic.

Congratulations to the following CHS finalists in the 2012 Water Spots Video Contest-Angela Polizzi, Jamie Geiger, Venessa Smith, Jordan Chavolla, Drue Just, and Jeremy Knapp. The students created a 25 second public service announcement on outdoor water efficiency. Center Unified School District students in grades 5, 7, 9 and 11 will be participating in the 2012 California Healthy Kids Survey. The window for survey administration is March 19th through March 28th. This is a very important survey that will help us support your children with programs that emphasize positive youth development. The survey is anonymous, voluntary and sponsored by the California Department of Education. A copy of the survey your child will be taking is on file in the office of your child’s school. The CJUSD District Geo Bee was held on February 1, 2012. After about 20 rounds, Netza Ponce earned first place, and Jonathan Jolly took second place, and Michelle Zhang took third place. The first place winner received a $50 check,
second place winner received a $30 check, and third place received a $20 check. All these cash prizes were donated by the CJUSD Teacher Association. Congratulations to all the students who participated in all the rounds.

Congratulations Coach Digol J'Beily who has been named the Pioneer Valley League Football Coach of the Year! Coach J'Beily was chosen by the other varsity coaches in the PVL league. Coach J'Beily's Cougars finished the league season 3-2, qualifying the team for an appearance in the 1st round of the CIF playoffs.
