WCR 8th Grade Awards Night

The 8^th Grade Awards Night will be Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Riles Multipurpose Room. Individual students and families have received an invitation to this event. Students that have been chosen by teachers for outstanding academic performance in each subject area and students that demonstrated outstanding citizenship throughout the year will be recognized. Also, the top female and male scholar/athlete will be announced.

Mike has devoted 30 years to the District and to Center High School. He is well-loved by his students, highly respected by his peers, and revered in the regional Science community for his numerous outreach and partnership activities with universities and other Science and research organizations. His focus in these endeavors is to provide unique learning opportunities for his students, and they have been the beneficiaries of these unique partnerships for three decades.

We salute Mike for his many years of excellence and dedication, and congratulate all these excellent Teachers of the Year. Each is a great asset to their school site and to our District.

Congratulations to D'Juan Bellaire! He signed a letter of intent to play football at division II Delta State in Mississippi. D'Juan led the Sacramento area in rushing with 2214 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Comcast Cares- About Dudley!

In California, Comcast has focused its efforts on improving local schools. In the past few years, thousands of Comcast employees and their family members have volunteered their time to fix up classrooms, improve landscaping, set up play structures, repair broken fixtures, paint walls, build benches and tables and complete many, many other projects to improve the quality and appearance of schools throughout the Sacramento region. Comcast employees participate in the process of selecting schools for Comcast Cares Day and we work throughout the year with the chosen schools to identify specific projects that will provide both short-term and long-term improvements to the school. Comcast provides all the material and coordinates the labor to complete the projects.

This year Comcast will be at Arthur Dudley Elementary School. On April 27, hundreds of volunteers will be on campus completing projects around the school including landscaping, installing benches, cleaning walls and walkways and much more.

WCR Showcases Young Musicians

Music students from four schools performed for a large crowd in the Wilson C. Riles Multipurpose Room Wednesday evening, March 13. Band students from Dudley, North Country, and Oak Hill Elementary Schoolsdisplayed their talents, along with the band students from Wilson Riles. An audience of over 150 watched with pride as the young musicians demonstrated what they have learned. Music teacher Dave Myers works with students at Riles, Oak Hill, and Dudley, and he orchestrated the evening and led the various groups in playing for over an hour. Anne Merdinger runs the music program at North Country, but was unable to attend the show. Parents and family members gave a standing ovation at the close of the performance, and Mr. Myers commented on how much he enjoyed the evening, “I’ve known some of these kids for several years, and I’m impressed with how well they play. This evening was truly fun!” Mr. Myers will put on a “Husky Café” presentation in a few weeks, allowing the Riles students to perform. Riles will also host a spring music performance later in the year. Check our calendar on the school website for upcoming dates.

Center HS Holds Court

The DUI Court in Schools Program is designed to educate teens about the legal consequences of drinking and driving through witnessing an actual DUI trial. It is not a mock trial but rather a real DUI trial transferred from the local courthouse to the school gymnasium. Center High School is hosting a DUI Trial Friday, February 22, 2013 9:00 am – 10:30 am. Seniors and Juniors, along with CHS staff, district and board members will attend the real-time proceedings.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The staff and students are anxious to showcase for the community, the varied programs and opportunities
that are available to WCR students . WCR boasts an AVID program, GATE Academy,

School Lockdown - Center High, Global Youth, and Antelope View

This is Scott Loehr, Superintendent of the Center Joint Unified School District.

Today, we had three of our schools (Center High, Global Youth, and Antelope View) on lock down status. This was a precautionary measure and is in response to a suspect being at large in our community. The suspect is still at large and, if needed, we may need to return to lock down status. Again, this is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

We will continue to keep you updated and want you to know that our priority is the safety of our community.

CHS Students Make a Difference!

Center High School hosted a blood drive last Friday, 1/18/13. The students and staff had a great day and a great turnout. Based on previous blood drives, the goal was to collect 103 lifesaving pints of blood and the school collected 104 lifesaving pints! (140 people tried in total) One of the most amazing numbers that came from Friday's participation polling was the CHS team of students brought in 96 brand new blood donors to the cause. That is an amazing number! Thank you to all the students who took part of saving lives.

Incident Near Oak Hill

This is David Grimes, Director of Personnel and Student Services for Center Joint Unified School District.

This morning, January 18, the Twin Rivers Police Department took a report at Oak Hill Elementary School of the following:

An Oak Hill student was on her way to school at approximately 8:30 a.m. when she was approached from behind by a person who fits the following description: an African American male in his late teens or early twenties, approximately 5'6", average build, wearing a black hoodie, and possibly intoxicated. The suspect did not say anything to the student, but grabbed her by the shoulder. The student reacted by hitting the suspect in the face and kicking him in the groin, and then ran to a friend's house.

The suspect was last seen walking along Dianne Drive in the direction of Pokelma Park.

Local law enforcement agencies have been made aware and have been actively searching for the suspect. As a precaution, we have also requested and received an increased presence of law enforcement in the area throughout the day. School activities have proceeded according to their normal schedule.

We ask that if any of you were in the vicinity of Dianne Drive and North Loop Blvd. around 8:30 a.m., and heard or saw anything unusual, that you please report this to the Twin Rivers Police Department at 566-2777. That number again is 566-2777.

As always, the safety of every student in our District is of top priority to us. We thank you for your assistance in helping keep our students safe.

Connecticut Tragedy

Dear CJUSD Families,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the students, parents, faculty and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. We mourn for the victims of this unthinkable tragedy.

Our young people are most precious to us, and their safety and well-being are our top priority. Our schools will continue to run lockdown, school evacuation, fire, and earthquake drills. We will continue to do the necessary work to prepare for an emergency to ensure our school community remains safe.
