[Activity 14] Sponsoring Class XI and XII of Swarna Sri, a class X topper in AP, India

As a continuation of our efforts to assist students continue their education, we are sponsoring the school (Class XI and XII) education of Swarna Sri, a class X topper in AP, India. Swarna Sri scored 591/600 marks and stood state third in Class X AP state board examinations. She is an IIT aspirant and is studying first year Intermediate at a private institution in Vijayawada. The total fee per year is around 1.2L. The institution gave a partial fee waiver based on her merit, and she needs to pay around 40K for each of two years (Class XI and XII).

[Announcement] CKF Scholarship program

In CKF, we have always been striving to help more students continue their education. We believe “money” should not be a reason for anybody to discontinue education. We have been fulfilling that vision in a small way for the past few years with a group of friends and volunteers. Now, we want to do more of that and to facilitate the initiative, we are bringing in new processes. As a first step in channelizing the process, we have created a “Scholarship Program” and are accepting applications from students (primary and secondary education), in need.

How can you help?
Spread the word. Talk to your parents, friends, and colleagues. If you know or come across a student in your community/ workplace, who you think might benefit from CKF Scholarship program; please let them know and share the information with us.

What do we need from the applicant?

All - I am glad to let you all know that Computer Kindness Foundation has been registered on Sep 21, 2011 as a legal Not-For-Profit (NFP) entity under The Indian Trusts Act, 1882. We have been planning this for a long time and are very delighted about this new development. This legal status provides CKF with many benefits (we will communicate them as we progress) and will enable us to do more of what we have been doing already.

[Activity 9] Extending Our Hands!!

Few months back we received information from one of our members regarding a student named Nataraj doing his final year Production Engineering (Sandwich) at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. His father passed away in a road accident. He was unable to pay his semester fee since his father was the bread winner of the family. He has not paid his fees for the last four semesters and the total amount required was huge since the fee per semester was more than Rs.20,000. He had good academic results. With the help of some of our members who volunteered in helping him, we sponsored an amount of Rs.9000 from Computer Kindness Foundation.

We came to understand from the college that some of the alumni also came forward to help him for payment of his semester fee.

We are absolutely delighted and thankful to all the volunteers for the timely help to solve his financial crunch.

[Activity 8] 3 computers to Assisi Snehalaya

We are glad to inform everyone that we had given away 3 computers to a charity organization near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu called Assisi Snehalaya (http://www.assisisnehalaya.org/) through a volunteer. The primary motive of the charity is to help children affected by AIDS.

Apart from that, the organization also conducts seminars and awareness programmes in villages, colleges and schools. They also provide training programmes to volunteers, near by villages and local youth for which the computers will be used.

[Activity 7] Help with continuing education of students

Dear all,

Hope everyone is good. Recently one of our members communicated, regarding help to two college students studying B Com (3 years) in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. They are are currently in their 1st year of college and are in need of financial assistance. The situation is bad, and they might have to discontinue their studies, if someone cannot sponsor them.

They have heard about us, and wanted to know if we can help them on their studies. I spoke to both of them 2 days back and inquired more about their studies and financial status. I have also asked them to send the required documents, which will help us further.

Total Cost:
Fees per person (Per Semester): Rs. 6000
Exam Fees per person (Per Semester): Rs. 600

Update 1 (April 10 2009): We are glad to sponsor their education(Tuition and Exam fees) in full. We have called and confirmed this to them.

Update 2 (July 14 2009): We have paid the tuition and exam fees for the third semester to the college.

Update 3 (December 20 2009): We have paid the tuition and exam fees for the fourth semester to the college.

Update 4 (July 15 2010): We have paid the tuition and exam fees for the fifth semester to the college.

World Community Grid uses the processing power of computers connected to the internet. The processing power is being used for many not-for-profit researches (list available in the website). All you need to do is to create an account, install a small piece of software in your PC/ Mac and its done. Its absolutely safe.

Most of the time, we do not use 100 percent of the CPU and this can be used for such purposes. You do not have to worry about starvation of your processes, as you can set the preferences like the percentage of CPU and disk space that can be used by world community grid and ensure that the processing power of your system is used only when you are not using it.

[Activity 6] Sri Sathya Sai Sevakshetra

This I should say, is one of the happiest momentsl. Thanks to everyone out there that made this possible. People who have donated the computers, members, well wishers and others.

We have started the work and have given away the first computer :). Yes. true and delighted.

Last Saturday (19 July 2008) we visited Sri Sathya Sai Sevakshetra (school) in Marthalli, Bangalore and donated them a computer which we promised a month back. The school is basically for the children of the construction workers in that area. I should tell the children were excited that they were going to learn computers.The school is run by volunteers (They are looking for more, You can get in touch with me if you want to help them in any way...). There are around 20 students of different ages in the class and the classes happen from Monday to Saturday. The classes do not follow a very strict syllabi as of now, but help them face the world by teaching them general conversational knowledge and general knowledge.

Above are the pictures taken during the visit and the computer we donated to them.

Some of their wishlists

Fund to pay salary(for some months…) to the staff which is around 3500. (as of now they have one dedicated staff)
Volunteers during weekends.
If you think, you can screen a movie for them on a weekend, you are welcome.

" Kris Kamisetty from Intel directed me to this website, and I have to say - I'm really impressed! The work you are doing is truly inspiring and I have always dreamed of doing the same. In fact, my friend Sriram and I were planning on flying to India this summer to set up a computer lab in a rural Indian school (we currently reside in the US). Anyways, our idea was to set up a lab using thin clients so our hardware requirements would be really low. The server to which the clients are connected to would provide all the processing power as well as the hard disk space. This way, we figured that we can use old and low powered computers and still set up a successful lab. As for the operating system, we decided to use Edubuntu which has several productivity applications designed specifically for students. It would also allow the instructor to have control over every terminal.

Extending our hands !!!

This is one of the first thing(help...) that we are doing. Bear with the choice of words, as i am delighted and not sure what i am typing. :)

Recently we got an information from one of our members regarding some help to Mr. B.Devarajan, Coimbatore, who was suffering from heart problems and has undergone a "Bypass Surgery" last week since he had multiple blocks in heart. We tried few other organizations for help. We also thought of contributing some funds to help him from our side.

So we extend the help by donating him a sum of Rs.5000(Five thousand only) from Computer Kindness which will be of some use to the person. Below are the details of the person to whom we are going to help. We will be handing over the cheque in a day or two to the concerned person.

Visit to Mullai Wholesome Academy

This is regarding the visit by us as planned earlier to Mullai wholesome academy, Dharmapuri. Below details are not in a particular order, but we want you to know what we know.

We (2 of us - me and Deepan, one of our members) visited the place on Feb 2, 2007. We had a small meeting with Mr. Prem Kumar and Ms. William Prem, Principal of that school. The school was started in the year 1994 and has grown gradually and provides education for about 600 students taken care by 23 teaching staffs. The school is completely autonomous and helped by organisations and foundations like us. They were quite delighted that we are going to help them.

The school is situated some 7 kms from Dharmapuri, Tamilnadu in a small village and they have concentrated on the poor families in the locality and we are happy that they do provide value education. The atmosphere and the facilities in the school are quite good.

They do have a fees structure minimum of Rs.20 for primary and maximum of Rs.60 for the higher grade students.

Computer Lab
They have a small setup of 2-3 computers (very old - 8086 processors) for the school students and they follow a syllabus. They also provide computer hardware training by experts on weekends to the local youngsters for employment opportunities.

We spent around 2 hours with them and we have promised that we will help them. We also said that we will get back to them in one or two weeks and move ahead in setting up the computer lab. We have also said them that we will visit them occasionally and give them training on various aspects.

We are very happy to let you know that we are in touch with a school (Mullai Wholesome Academy, Dharmapuri, Tamilnadu) and very positive in helping them with computers. The school has a strength of around 600 and has one computer for basic teaching purposes. They have approached us for help.

Syllabus to Students

We at (www.computerkindness.org) are in the process of designing the syllabus for the students in schools that we are going to help.

As you know already, we will be concentrating only on the student community (also planning to expand for disabled children in future) and will be concentrating on the basics of computers and computer science and also some basic software packages.

So, it would be great if you can help us in designing the syllabus. All feedback, suggestions, comments are welcome. Please forward it through computer.kindness@gmail.com

Some points here:

* Platform is going to be Linux ( edubuntu.org) mostly -- to avoid copyright and legal issues.

* Basic introduction about computers + related things.

* Software Packages includes -- Open office, Editors, Compilers, Internet basics, Softwares that can be used for their academics etc.

Please input your suggestion and help us in creating a syllabus. It would also be great if someone can take interest on this, design a full syllabus and be an advisor on this regard.
