Dancing Caterpillars seem to be a recurring theme here at ZipZapZop… This time, I discover that these little Eastern Tent Caterpillar pests (there were literally thousands upon thousands of them here in May) are quite responsive to sound vibrations. It makes me wonder if perhaps some kind of audio mechanism would keep them away…

Happy 2008!
When I moved to the Catskills I was a little afraid I might not find people like the Joan Group, but luckily, I did. It’s hard to describe what Joan Group is, but in a nutshell, Joan members get together pretty much weekly to create homegrown jams and out of it comes a new CD each week(just a small few are found on Last.fm). This has been going on for over 15 years. Anyway, I’m honored to be gallivanting with such wonderful and merry pranksters. On a recent night we recorded this 12 minute patience-building masterpiece - for which I threw together some old footage. Hang in there to the end for the return of the caterpillar…

So I’ve been posting lots of old stuff from the archives - a few posts back I put up some Electrode Dingus 2026 videos. One day I went to a show at the Mercury Cafe (Denver) and left some Electrode Dingus 2026 cassettes above the urinals in the bathroom. This was approximately in 1995. The dudes from LD-50 found one, and eventually found me, and we started working together. We made 1 cassette, and hours and hours of videos from playing live, which was really the emphasis. Recone Helmut and I made a few videos for the cassette songs, and I present one of the tracks here.

Thanks to Steven the Buddha Root for reminding me of the Flip Flop mix, which also has some summer connotations and vibrations. Steve was one of the key people who inspired me to start mixing in the first place, and we used to throw down in probably Iowa’s first underground “pre-rave” parties in Decorah, Iowa basements in 1990. Since I haven’t had time to make new stuff much lately, I figure I’ll just keep posting from the seemingly endless pit of things that I did with myself in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I hope you enjoy the FlipFlop mix.

Back in the early 90’s I decided to start recording music with a 4 track cassette recorder, a delay pedal, and whatever instruments and stuff I could get my hands on. This included crates, doors, a guitar, a bass, a 50 foot dragon kite, pipes, tubes, a wooden flute, and tv’s.

I called it "Electrode Dingus 2026" and I made a 6 song cassette, as well as 4 videos. Videos feature found footage from tv as well as lots of things I shot myself, and a live performance at the Bug Theater in Denver called "Kin Tec". Here’s one: You Must Go…Ã‚

I meant to post this on my birthday (6-26-06 =37) but forgot! Many of you have this or have heard, but for those who haven’t, it’s an ambient mix I made in NY in December 2001, and perhaps the best I ever made, "The Bestest Sweetest Dreams Ever — meant to play at bedtime for little babies or big ones, like me. It features the words of the Beatles’ guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi near the beginning. I also put it together with video in this low quality RealPlayer video, but hope to one day redo it in Quicktime as well.

Once upon a time, I went to New York City, and began pursuing acting. Against my better judgement of commercialization and consumer society, I started booking commercials pretty quickly. I thought after I started booking commercials I’d eventually start booking films and make a career of it. I did book some student films, but never really broke into the major motion picture industry as I hoped… It was pretty exciting working on 35mm film in places like L.A., NYC, Canada and Spain, though!

A tip for driver’s regarding setting the side view mirrors… Most people set them so the driver can see cars in the rear, but if you move them outwards, so you only see cars as they exit the rear view mirror, you can actually get rid of that blind spot and see with "365 degrees of awareness" Try it! Put your cheek to the window, then set the mirror as you normally do. It’s weird at first, but you get used to knowing where cars are all the time, and only seeing them in the sideview mirror when they’re passing you.

Weekend Therapy for apartmenttherapy.com with Clark ov Saturn
This was the second installment of Weekend Therapy. I met a couple of the people behind AT while meditating in January, and they are so positive and lovely. But being a much larger and more commercial/accessible site than ZZZ, well, let’s just say it’s taking their traffic a while to warm up to me… ~~This episode got far fewer negative comments than the first one.~~ It’s not so far from the usual ZipZapZop fare, but it’s pretty different from the apartmenttherapy menu. I guess for some it’s hard to have PBR when you’re used to Stella. I like them both. Actually, is ZipZapZop the PBR of vlogs? If vlogs were beers, which would ZipZapZop be?

The kicker for zipzapzoppers is, I’ll be posting much more of the actual ikea call here later this week… Look for more weekend therapy on Saturday mornings at apartmenttherapy.com.

Whale-a-Dub mix— Ambient, deep dub, and a flexidisc of Whale songs from the National Geographic magzine I’ve had since I was wee little. I basically made a bunch of mixes in order to get a bunch of my vinyl onto CD, so I was more focused on getting entire songs onto CD than just mixing and mixing, if you know what I mean. Just a bit of text to let you know that I’ve been doing some testing and experimenting, as per usual, so there have been some anomalies in the feed as of late— mostly due to me trying to give special bonus DJ mixes in the posts, which the feed has been picking up instead of the videos! And a few other things…

So from here on out, I will post the DJ mixes in separate posts (category: DJ Mix/ Podcast on the ZipZapZop.com website!), but include them in the regular ZipZapZop (clarksworld) feed. If you are subscribed to the feeds.feedburner.com/zipzapzop feed, I recommend you switch to feeds.feedburner.com/clarksworld instead. I think it’s just easier and less confusing to have 1 main feed.

I’m crossposting from MyGermanClass.com, thought maybe some ZipZapZoppers might want to learn a little German with me… I made these videos for my cable access German class, Tele Deutsch, back in the 90’s in Denver, and have been working feverishly over the last couple months to get them into Quicktime for iPod… I hope you enjoy….

FRESH OFF THE PRESS! I just figured out how to add titles to these videos! Looks like I’ll be locked up in bed for weeks getting all the titles into these! I’m now replacing the original file with a subtitled one…

Once again this was captured unknowingly while getting ready for the recording. I always get a chuckle such "accidental recordings" and I hope you do to. But they are another example of why ZipZapZop won’t be listed in the iTunes "selected video podcasts"— ZipZapZop is not something you can exactly put your finger on. It’s not like a regular "show" we’ve been programmed to think of as a show. Most TV is so standardized and formulaic it’s sad, really. What if our favorite shows came on and showed us all the truly bizarre and interesting things that go on behind the scenes instead of the show sometimes? Video on the internet offers us an opportunity to go beyond those limits, to THINK DIFFERENT, right? We don’t need everything to be full of packaging and formulas. When we are kids, somebody spins us around and we want more… more. again, again. The same thing over and over. Which is why we make such great "target markets" for advertisers and marketers, corporations and media.
