Hey Curlies,

I've been meaning to post these pictures on here for a while. The photos are of a few hair styles that I've been wearing over the last few days.

If you are wondering how I got my edges so smooth in the photo above, I used aloe vera gel and a head scarf.

Hair Care: Product Buildup Count Challenege

Hey Curlies,

So the other day I was talking to my mom and she was saying how quickly her hair absorbs moisture (like most naturals). She then proceeded to talk about all of the products that we use in our hair daily and how it begins to add up. This sparked an thought...

Really, how many products do I use in my hair per week?

We have all of these products dedicated to natural hair and curly hair that we are consumed with them and want to try everything. Honestly, think about how many products you use on your typical wash day -_- It is probably nothing but ridiculous!

The challenge that I am going to have for myself starting tomorrow, 5/19/13 when I wash my hair, and for you all is to write down every product you use during the week. For one week I will be doing this challenge. Try not to think about it too much and honestly go on with your normal routine. Record all products including:

Shampoos
Conditioners
Leave-in conditioners
Stylers
Sealants
Oils
Everything else you use!

At the end of the week I will update you all and in that post I would like you all to post how many products you used and you can even elaborate to what those products actually are if you'd like.

Right now I am going to guess that I use maybe 5-6 products on my hair per week. If you would like to tell your estimate, write it below and we will compare in one week.

Natural Hair: Will Blow Drying Cause Heat Damage?

Hey Curlies,

A lot of people who are natural and who have naturally curly hair are nervous about heat damage. I, for a long time, wouldn't pick up a heat infused styling tool because I love my curl pattern. I began experimenting with blown out styles late last year and it is something different.

There are few different ways to blow dry your hair but the most common two are sitting under a hooded dryer and using a hand-held dryer. Here is the break down.

Hooded Dryer

-This heat isn't direct heat and is more of a heat level that is spread.

-One of the safer ways of blow drying hair

Hand-Held Blow Dryer

-This heat is direct because the heat is all going to one area of your hair

-This heat is one that can cause heat damage if done extensively on high heat.

Always remember to use a heat protectant with any of these methods. To see a list of recommendations, click here. Grapeseed oil is also a fantastic heat protectant.

Be sure to also blow dry your hair, especially if using a hand-held dryer, on the lowest setting possible. This will reduce the chance of heat damage.

Will you get heat damage from blow drying?

To be honest, I can't answer that question for you because everyone's hair is different. I will say that I have become more comfortable with heat over the last few months because I have been taking the right precautions to use heat styling tools. Don't be afraid to do something different with your hair.

I honestly can't remember how I found this company,but I think that I was contacted by one of the representatives. The products contain natural herbs and are no way, shape or form, tested on animals. All ingredients are labeled vegan and contain essential oils. This brand has over 9,000 Twitter likes and over 5,000 Facebook likes. They are definitely getting attention!

This is personally one of my favorite brands and I hope to try more products from them. The company is ran by a mother who loves whipping up delicious hair products. The products are handmade and contain fantastic ingredients. If you are really into hair type, these products are especially made for those with a 3c to a 4c hair type, but it doesn't mean that other hair types can't still use them. This brand has received 100% great feedback from customers and offers a variety of products.

Natural Hair Styles: Bigger Sock Bun

Hey Curlies,

I stretched my hair with a roller set and created a high, sleek bun using only a few of products. To see how I stretched my hair and what I washed with, click here.

I applied Shea Moisture's Transitioning Milk along with aloe vera gel to my edges. Grapeseed oil was applied to my ends.

I love the sleek edges

At night, I applied a scarf to my edges and took down the bun. Sleeping in styles that are restricting, such as buns and ponytails, can cause breakage. I put a bonnet on over the loose hair.

Natural Hair Care: Stretching Your Curls

Hey Curlies,

So I did attempt(key word is attempt lol) to complete another roller set, which I did. I just wasn't feeling it, but at the end of the day, my goal was to stretch my hair so that I could do other styles.

I washed using Mill Creek Biotin Shampoo, conditioned with Aubrey Organics Balancing Conditioner and deep conditioned with Amika Olive Oil Mask. I set the rollers with TRESemme Heat Protectant spray.

The issue last time I did a similar roller set was that I ran out of the metal clips to secure the rollers. This time I went out and bought two more packs of clips and I still didn't have enough. I had to use three perm rods in the back.

At this point, I had just taken the rollers out, and it looks all good...right?

Yeah! I don't think that I am a good curl separator lol (If that makes sense). My Mother loved it, but it just wasn't my thing. I actually had another style in mind. Click here to see how I styled my hair.

How long have you been natural?

Since 2007, but I always had my hair blow dried and in some style. I remember one day I was in college and a girl was like "oh you got a perm, it looks good" and I said "well thank you, but its no perm I just blow dried it." She didn't believe me and thought I was lying. I didn't understand why she was upset nor believed me.I thought to myself who lies about stuff like that, but that was the eye opener to me that I didn't need to get perms anymore especially if people thought I already had one. I didn't embrace my natural curls until the summer of 2010.

Why did you go natural?
My hair is pretty fine so there was no point in getting perms anymore because I didn't like my hair being dead straight after getting them. Also I just really feel good and like the idea of embracing my good/natural hair and allowing it to be healthy.

When did you Big chop?

I actually never went for the big chop, I was too scared lol so I did it the long way. Kept getting my hair done and cutting off a few inches at a time. Which now that I think about it was such a process. If I would of known more at the time about going natural then I would of just did the "big chop" and got my hair braided with singles or in a style and kept it up until I was a bit more comfortable with the length to rock it as it was.

A short regimen you can share?
I use natural olive oil (used for cooking) for my deep conditioning which leaves my hair feeling great and moist. I put it in my hair let it sit for 30-45 mins depending upon if I have a dryer to sit under or not then wash it out and decide how i am going to stye it. I do this every other week. But I know thisworks for me it might not work for everyone else, you must know yourself/hair first. I have fine hair, but it is also dry

Do you have any favorite products?
Olive Oil Organic Roots shampoo & Conditioner. And also I really love the Olive Cream by Hollywood Beauty, its more dry hair and is enriched with 4 oils and vitamins A, B, C, & E. Love using it for my bantu twist outs.

Do you have any advice on going natural?
Do your research, try to figure out your hair type and talk to others with the same kind of hair. Most importantly is experimenting with different products. This can get a bit expensive if not done right, but if you are really unsure set up a consultation with a natural hair dresser and get their opinions. On the flip side have fun trying different styles and see what works best for you and your face shape. It will be some work, but once you know what your doing your going to love & enjoy it!

What are some of your favorite styles?
I love to wear my hair in a mohawk either braided and or with my natural hair just pinned up. I also enjoy my afro. Now that the Spring/Summer is here though I am probably going to hair it braided a lot more. I find it easier to maintain esp since I like to work out and natural hair & working out don't always go hand and hand.

What is your most favorite and most least favorite about natural hair?

Favorite would be the freedom of it and to just know that I can wash my hair leave it with some leave in conditioner and be on my merry way sometimes. A lot of woman are not comfortable walking in public with an afro, for a while I wasn't myself, but am so happy I have the confidence to do so! Least favorite would be how it doesn't really mix with the gym unless braided. Also the fact that sometimes it can be some work in trying trying new styles and if it doesn't look good then back to the drawing board.

Since this is a site about natural hair and embracing what one has, what is one piece of advice that all women should have?
My advice is to experiment and have fun. We all have one life to live, plus the topic is hair,it will grow back for the most part and if not and or too damaged that's why you can buy it lol. But the most important thing is learn about your hair and don't damage it. Once you start to damaging its a long road back to recovery. Have confidence & be enjoy the freedom of it. I love it and am so happy I have embraced my natural side, wish I would of done so long before! At least give it a try!!

Anything else to add?

I wished more people embraced natural hair and it was shown more thought the media. I feel like as #teamnaturalhair we have to band together and put ourselves out there more with pictures, education and facts. I think its important to inform people and to to let them know it's okay to go natural. I say that because for me growing up my sisters and I have always had good hair but as we got older we all decided to go our own route with it. Me on the other hand it wasn't a choice for me when it happened. I had lost my job for a period in time and couldn't afford to go get my hair done like I did on a regular bases nor buy weaves. I couldn't see myself trying to balance things around just so I can get my hair done. So I tried the "wet look" as I called it and at first didn't know how I felt about it really, it was a lot for me to embrace. But after I did and got comfortable with it, I loved it and ran with it and am so happy I did till this day. I also loved it because with me modeling it gave me a "look" compared to my hair just being straight which I wanted for so long and did't know it was there the whole time.

Natural Hair Style: Braid Out on Wet Hair

I finally took my braids down from almost 4 days ago. I wasn't doing any thing special the last few days but going to work so I just wore a hat. Here are the results from the braid out:

My issue with braid outs is that they normally don't last me as long as my twist outs do. I also am visiting my parents this week and I left my bonnet and headscarf at home! Ugh. To see how I got this look click here!

Hair Care: How to Modify a Deman Brush

Natural Hair: Braid Out Prep

Hey Curlies,

I finally got a chance to start with my braid-out. Detangling was a complete mess! A nightmare to say the least. I detangled using my Aloe Vera juice mix and Curly Hair Solutions Leave-in Conditioner. I twisted with Aloe Vera gel and African Pride Shea Butter Miracle Buttery Creame. I used Vitamin E oil after my twists were done and on my edges.

I will be untwisting tomorrow and hopefully wearing it for the rest of the week.

Health: What Vitamins Do I take?

Hey Curlies,

A lot of people always ask me how do I get my hair really soft and healthy. I do have a hair regimen that I stick too, but I also take daily vitamins for my overall health. I am sure that these supplements has had an effect on the state of my hair.

If you don't know by now, I am sort of a health freak. I love using natural ingredients for my body and hair. My mother is the same way and I think that is where I get it from lol. Anyway, here are the vitamins that I take daily:

Ester-C is full of Vitamin C and Calcium
Nature's Measure Women's Essential Vitamins is a multi-vitamin with iron
Spring Valley B-12 Vitamin is for energy metabolism

Where Can These Be Bought?

Ester-C: at any drugstore, Walmart, Target, or any store that sells vitamins (GNC etc.)
Women's Essential Vitamins: The Dollar Tree...yes, the dollar store! lol They are just as good and even better than more expensive brands.
B-12: Any drugstore/pharmacy

I take Ester-C everyday and from there I switch off between the essential vitamin and B-12 every other day. I began taking this vitamin below, but for some reason I had nausea after every time that I took it. It was really weird because my granny had given me a bottle in high school and I had no issues with it. So currently, I have an entire bottle just chilling on my dresser lol.

What type of vitamins/supplements do you take?

Natural Hair Style: Mohawk on Wet Hair

Hey Curlies,

Following from my last post, I was going to do a braid out on my freshly washed hair, but I decided that since I'm going out with some friends tonight that I won't have time for it to dry. I thought about sitting under the dryer but I still wasn't feeling it.

I may do a braid out sometime soon, but for now I decided to create a mohawk and a pompadour in the front. To style I used OBIA Natural Hair Care Curl Enhancing Custard,Aloe Vera gel and bobby pins.

As you can see, I didn't even bother to detangle.

Today marked three weeks exactly of me wearing my mini twists and I have to say that there is no way I could have gone a day longer! My hair needed to be washed very badly and the overall look was messy.

Natural Hair: Curly Mini Twists

Hey Curlies,

Like I mentioned before, I did have a chance to set my mini twists on flexi rods since they are beginning to look a little rough. It literally took me about 15 minutes to put in the flexi rods.

The next morning I took the rollers out and this is what I got:

Natural Hair: Mini Twist Update (Week 3)

Hey Curlies,

I have been extremely lazy with my hair lately! I've just been throwing a scarf on last minute and crashing in the bed. This is finals week for me so stressed isn't even the word. I will be taking these down this weekend because they are starting to look rough and my scalp is in need of a good wash!

Here are a few photos I have captured so far.

Shrinkage is something else huh? I've lost about 2-3 inches of length because I haven't been wrapping my hair at night. It now looks like a neck length bob, but I can roll with that!

Natural Hair: Mini Twists Update (Week 2)

Hey Curlies,

Here is my mini twist update for week two. Today marks two weeks of my mini twists. I plan on keeping them in for one more week before installing another set.

I did have to redo the back row because it was beginning to look messy, but either than that, I haven't touched the others. I did do an extensive moisture and oil treatment. I used a lemongrass leave-in conditioner on my scalp and twists then used melted coconut oil on the perimeter of my hair, followed by vitamin E oil for my scalp and twist also.

I have noticed that they appear to be larger and I have concluded that since they have shrank up a bit, that it most likely the reason. A few nights ago I got lazy and didn't feel like wrapping my hair using the bobby pin method so I just tied my edges down with a scarf.

Hey Curlies,

Last night, one of my friends dropped by and told me about this dietary supplement that she ordered. She heard about the supplement through YouTube when many vloggers described it as a way to grow their hair longer.

Instantly, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the product. The name of the product is called MineralRich.

Once I researched the product, I learned that it is packed with an enormous amount of vitamins and minerals. Some of these vitamins include B-12, Biotin,Zinc and calcium. It also contains Aloe Vera Gel. Ultimately, it good for your overall health and not just your hair. Honestly I was looking for something to be wrong with this product since my friend described it as something that would make her hair grow. After research I found out that it is just a supplement.

Now will I try this product? Probably not. I have read good reviews about the product, but at about $23, it doesn't seem worth it to me considering I already take a multivitamin daily. If you do not take a daily vitamin, this is a product that I would recommend.

Natural Hair: "Weird Straight Hairs"

Hey Curlies,

I always read different forums or see social media postings about people who have this problem. I actually have the problem myself. Do you have random straight hairs floating around in your tightly curled hair texture? Me too!

Days after my BC-2011

I first discovered this a few days after my big chop. Although I believed that I had cut all of the relaxer out of my head, I still noticed small straight hairs. Since I was a newly natural then, I decided that maybe I hadn't cut my hair like I should have and proceeded to keep cutting. Now I know that I was actually cutting my hair for no reason.

A few months passed and I still noticed these weird straight hairs when I wore puffs or wore my hair out. It is not a visible thing to others unless you are staring at my hair.

Two weeks ago, my friend is talking to me and is playing in my hair as she speaks, which she does frequently, not a big deal. She says, "Hey do you know you have some straight pieces of hair in your head?"

So that same day, I decided to take this picture:

My "weird hairs"- April 2013

I know you see it! Those very weird straight hairs. No matter how often I trim my ends, they still hang on. They do not conflict with styling my hair or any other matter, they are just...interesting.

So do I have a solution? No, not at all. Although I call this a "problem" it really isn't. I just wanted to show you all my little "problem" also. If those "weird hairs" are not directly effecting your hair regimen or styling technique, leave them be.

If you use heat often, you could have heat damage. If you haven't trimmed your ends in a while, it could be about that time. In my case, I have none of those issues. Just "weird straight hairs."

My Review:
This conditioner is very creamy, thick and has great slip to it. Although this product is very thick, it did not seem to weigh my hair down at all. The product had a very light scent. This is definitely a conditioner that can be used daily after a wash or as a co-wash. One thing that I do like about this product is that the ingredients aren't questionable. The product includes organic and natural ingredients such as rosemary, lavender,mango,grapefruit and soy protein. If you are protein sensitive, be sure to be careful with products that contain protein. This product usually cost about $8 online or at any hair salon, but you can usually find it at your local Marshalls or TJ Maxx for $13 in a bottle double the size. Overall I give this product a 5 out of 5.

Earlier today on my Facebook and Twitter pages, I announced that there will be a giveaway sponsored by Hug My Hair which will open tomorrow!

There will be 3 winners, one week to enter and one product to win (VINTAGE). The giveaway will open tomorrow April 20,2013 and will end April 27,2013.

Natural Hair: Mini Twists Update (Week One)

Hey Curlies,

My mini twist have been in for a complete week and they are so convenient. I can literally get up in the morning, unwrap my hair and keep it moving.

At night I've been wrapping my hair with bobby pins and a scarf. They have shrunken a little since last week, but it's is not a major change. Here are a few pictures of how they look.

They are definitely still looking good and I've been getting lots of compliments on my hair this past week! If you would like to see how these were done, click here.
