A common misconception is that one method of carpet cleaning is as good as another.

No. You can choose from two primary methods: Dry Cleaning or Hot Water Extraction.

There are several types of dry cleaning with varying degrees of effectiveness.

DRY CLEANING: First, I’ll explain dry cleaning. Many people believe that dry cleaning your carpet is like dry cleaning your clothing. This is not true.

Clothes are dry cleaned with an intense solvent cleaner called “Perc” (a product that has been show to cause cancer). Solvents like Perc are waterless liquids and they are not used in carpet cleaning because the solvent oils in the solution dissolve the latex glues that bind carpet yarns to the backing.

The truth is…all carpet cleaning methods use water in one form or another. Some use less water than others.

The reasons some companies use low moisture cleaning methods are: 1) They dry fast, 2) They are easy to produce, 3) Technicians can work very fast, 4) The price is cheaper than a properly done hot water extraction process.

Four Methods of “DRY” or Low Moisture Carpet Cleaning.

DRY FOAM METHOD: When a carpet cleaner uses dry foam, he applies shampoo to your carpet, allows it to dry, and then sucks the dried shampoo into a vacuum.

Can you imagine applying shampoo to your hair, allowing it to dry and then removing the shampoo from your head with a vacuum? This method can leave a residue in your carpet, which is one reason dry foam is not very effective.

DRY CHEMICAL PROCESS: The dry-chem method is similar to dry foam. The major difference is that when dry-chem is used, the company sets a large cotton pad (called a bonnet) on your carpet. Using a rotary machine, the bonnet spins from side to side, absorbing the dirt that’s in the carpet. After the bonnet is saturated with dirt, another cotton bonnet is applied. Bonnet cleaning is like trying to use a large towel to rub the dirt out of your carpet. Like dry foam, its not very effective.

DRY COMPOUND CLEANING: The dry-compound method spreads an absorbent mixture that looks like wet sawdust all over your carpeting. Then the machine brushes the mixture into the carpet, which in theory causes dirt to absorb into the mixture. When the mixture has dried, a vacuum cleaner sucks the material out of the carpeting. Because the carpet is not rinsed in any way, this method is not very effective. Products such as Capture, Host, Kobosan and Spotless are Dry Compound Cleaners.

ENCAPSULATION METHOD: Similar to the dry foam method the cleaning solution mechanically lifts the dirt to the surface of a light foam. Then when the carpet’s dry, an acrylic polymer additive in the cleaning solution crystallizes. Then it cracks off the fiber when the vacuum runs over the carpet. This method is NEW and seems to work well especially on commercial carpets. Not a restorative remedy.

Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning

This is a fancy way of saying that a hot water cleaning solution under high pressure is forced into the carpet fibers and then extracted out of the carpet with a powerful vacuum system. This method is also referred to as “steam cleaning” even though actual steam is not used.

RESEARCH SAYS RINSING IS BEST: The main benefit to hot water extraction cleaning is the FLUSHING action of the water moving through the fibers. SHAW Industries (the world’s biggest carpet manufacturer) recently did testing on professional cleaning systems and determined that the amount of soil removed from a carpet is directly proportional to the AMOUNT or volume of water used to RINSE the carpet after cleaning products were applied.

Of course a powerful vacuum system must be used to remove soiled water!

Professional Cleaning Companies compete based on the systems they use to clean carpets. Here are two types of hot water extraction systems.

Portable extraction, which is done with a 5-12 gallon machine. Generally these units are under-powered to deliver adequate water flow. These units generally don’t produce much heat. Portable systems can deliver exceptional results IF the technician is experienced and knowledgeable.

Truck mount extraction: a large cleaning machine is mounted in a truck or van. These systems work well because they take advantage of three mechanical advantages to make cleaning fast and efficient. 1) The truck generates 190-260 degree heat (which aids tremendously in soil removal). 2) Cleaning products are automatically fed into the machine at a precise rate. 3) The truck contains water tanks for fresh and wastewater.

Not surprisingly, hot water extraction cleans much better than the other processes because it shoots the cleaning solution into the carpet at a higher pressure — which breaks up the dirt, bacteria and pollens.

Then the machine uses high-velocity suction to draw the dirt out of the carpet.

No question, the most effective way to clean carpeting is with a high volume extraction unit. A Clean Solution, LLC uses the most powerful truck mounted cleaning machine on the market and the only machine that thoroughly cleans your carpet of dirt, harmful bacteria, fungus, chemicals, pollens and tobacco residue.

There are several misconceptions about Hot Water Extraction Cleaning: 1) it causes mold and mildew, our system is so efficient at removing water that the carpet dries typically dries within 2 hours; 2) it shortens the life of a carpet, if carpet manufacturers require this method to maintain 15 year warranties, enough said. By washing and then rinsing your carpet with hot water, we clean your carpet completely — in the same way that a person who showers and then rinses off the dirt and soap will be much cleaner than a person who takes only a sponge bath, in fact, not only does hot water clean better, faster and with less cleaning agents. It also dries much quicker and even SANITIZES your carpet. This makes your home or office free of DUST MITES and other harmful microorganisms for a safer, healthier environment. (Wool carpet must always be cleaned with lower temperature and milder cleaning solutions.)

One of the most often asked questions we get regarding furniture is “How can I get the pet fur off of the fabric?”

The following items will be needed: vacuum cleaner with a wand attachment, rubber dish washing gloves, a small bucket of water or a wet towel and a trash bag.

The process is:

First, vacuum the furniture to remove as much of the fur as possible. If the fur is not very heavy, this may be all that is required.

Next, put the rubber gloves on. Dip the gloves in the bucket of water or get them damp (not dripping wet, just damp) with the towel.

Rub the gloves across the furniture starting with side to side strokes, then using up and down strokes. The fur will start to collect on the gloves. Remove the fur from the gloves and place in the trash bag.

Continue on until you have covered the entire piece of furniture.

Finish up with the vacuum again to collect any loose fur that remains.

This process will help keep your furniture looking good between annual cleanings. We recomment that furniture be professionally cleaned and protected every 6 to 12 months to maintain the performance of the fabric and to maintain a healthy indoor air quality.

The best way to prolong the life of your carpet is to have it cleaned by our Raleigh carpet cleaning team using a Truck Mounted Hot Water Extraction (Steam) process on a regular basis (we recommend every 6 to 12 months)

Nobody like a worn, soiled-looking carpet. And I’m sure everyone has heard enough about traffic and wear patterns. Well here are a few tips you can use around your house to extend the wear life of your carpeting for FREE!

And they are easy too!

1. Rearrange furniture often in rooms that receive high traffic.

Some of us fear change, but for others rearranging the furniture is almost a hobby! Either way, altering the flow of traffic through a room will spread out that daily wear and tear, creating a more even appearance and increasing the amount of time it takes wear to show. Plus, it gives you a fresh perspective on things!

2. Change your furnace filter at least monthly, or more often when its dry or dusty.

Indoor air quality is a very hot topic nowadays. As I’m sure you know, your carpeting is also a filter in your house. Maintaining a fresh air filter will help reduce some of the soiling in your carpet. So let the filter do the filtering and let your carpet do the comforting!

3. Consult with the professionals.

Some rooms, homes, or areas have special flooring needs. Make sure each room is optimized to handle its use. Having the right flooring in the right areas will contribute to the overall cleanliness of your home and make cleanings alot easier.

4. Vacuum regularly.

Lets say that again: Vacuum Regularly! This is probably the single greatest controlling factor that decides how long your carpet will last and how quickly it soils. It may not be the most enjoyable task ever, but it is a very important one and can have a suprising effect not just on your carpet, but also on your physical and mental health! Once again, Indoor air quality has been linked to a number of illnesses, diseases and disorders. Keeping your carpet clean and fresh eliminates so many contaminates from your home.
Vacuum at least once a week or more!

5. Quality flooring.

The cheapest carpeting is probably not the best. And while you may not need to shell out top dollar for the fanciest of carpets you should select a quality carpet and a good quality pad. The extra cost up front will save you alot of time and stress later, when you need to quickly replace a cheap carpet that has worn too quickly. And of course, buyer beware. Always check out the dealer and installer and make sure they are a quality company.

6. Avoid abrasive cleaning processes.

There are many types of carpet cleaning available. Abrasion and agitation are what causes carpet to wear. Avoid any processes that use abrasive mechanical brushes and buffers. These processes will cause the carpet to “fuzz”. You more than likely have seen the carpet that the pile doesn’t stand up, they just look fuzzy all over. Excessive abrasion and agitation causes this. I have seen carpets that are worn out, not from use, but from being cleaned using the wrong process.

There you have it! 6 quick tips you can use to keep your home and carpets fresh, clean and healthy in between regular cleanings! Feel free to contact our Raleigh carpet cleaners at 919-878-1915 if you have any questions.

Here are some quick tips you can keep handy for an immediate spot cleanup!

HOMEOWNERS, BLOT THAT SPOT! Seriously, always blot, never scrub. That’s our motto and I’m sure you’ve heard it before if we’ve had the priviledge to clean your home. Scrubbing creates friction and friction creates heat and heat can cause stains to set, and nobody wants that! Blotting with a cool, damp, white cotton towel will give you some great absorbancy potential, allowing you to soak up the bulk of the spill. You can use your hand OR your foot (or both, if you fancy Twister) to slowly and gently apply pressure to the towel for several minutes.

STEP AWAY FROM THE CLEANER! Most household cleaners and over-the-counter products are really not the sorts of things you want on your carpet. They can be very aggressive and abrasive, causing damage to your fibers and possibly even letting stains set easier and faster! While they may be well intentioned, most cleaners just mask the spot and damage the fibers, leaving a soapy or greasy residue that attracts more soiling over time, making spot “come back.” Rather than risk a permanent stain, its better to use a neutral solution (like a 50/50 mixture of cold water and white vinegar). If this doesn’t do the job, you should call your regular professional cleaner (when you have a minute!). A quality company will have trained and certified technicians who can address the spot much better and with the right tools. Call the Raliegh carpet cleaning team at 919-878-1915

SLEEP ON IT! OK, not really. But it doesn’t hurt to leave a cool, damp, white cotton towel on top of the spot for a few hours, or even over night, if you suspect it might stain or if some residue is left. You can put a handy phonebook or similar weighty item on top of the towel to hold it in place and help absorbtion. Wet carpeting dries from the bottom up, so that wet towel will “trick” the carpet into thinking it’s taller than it really is. It’s a pretty neat trick, as the product will end up in the towel and not your carpet, and we find it alot easier to wash a towel than a carpet!

So there you are, three short, handy tips yo can keep in mind. No matter what kind of spill you encounter, these three steps are the first things you should do! Save your own carpet from “Spots” or be the hero and save a friends!
