You may be in bed with toxic chemicals. A new report co-authored by Clean Water Action finds many of the top mattress manufacturers continue to use toxic flame retardants. While most furniture manufacturers are meeting flammability standards without the use of toxic chemicals, mattress manufacturers are lagging behind. Call for an Environmental Assessment Now for the R.D. Offutt Expansion!

Industrial potato producer R.D. Offutt is planning an expansion in north central Minnesota that would start with five wells in the Pineland Sands Aquifer. These first wells are more than 500 acres in Wadena and Becker counties. These wells will be allowed to use 166 million gallons of water per year! Take action to demand an environmental assessment before this exapnsion happens.

Which Side Are They On?  The 2015 Minnesota Legislative Scorecard

On October 1st, Clean Water Action released a scorecard for the 2015 Minnesota legislative session, scoring every state legislator on their votes on significant environmental bills. The scorecard reveals both disappointingly low environmental scores from some legislators and notable scores from environmental champions. More than half (57.2%) of our Minnesota legislature received a failing environmental score for the 2015 legislative session.

The scorecard focused on votes about clean energy policy, keeping plastic microbeads out of our water, the Omnibus Environmental and Natural Resources Finance bill, the Toxic Free Kids Act, and more.

Key findings:

Senate Democrats (74.5%) on average scored higher than Senate Republicans (19.5%) while House Democrats (92.6%) significantly outperformed the House Republicans (14.5%).
14 members of the Senate and 49 members of the House of Representatives earned perfect scores (100%), all of them members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, including Senate Assistant Majority Leader, Katie Sieben (54, DFL).

A new report found outdated, toxic products on Babies”R”Us store shelves. Products purchased at Babies”R”Us stores across the U.S. were screened for toxic flame retardant chemicals and six products failed the screening. Babies”R”Us competitor, Buy Buy Baby has banned seven toxic flame retardants in all products.

Restore the MPCA Citizens' Board

For nearly 50 years, Minnesota has had an environmental citizens’ board, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Citizens’ Board, which has been one of the only venues for Minnesotans to challenge and improve many proposed development projects that negatively affect our environment and our water. But this past June, the Board was eliminated by the Minnesota Legislature after the Board refused to rubber stamp a 9,000 cow dairy operation.

The legislature has compromised our environment, heritage, and our democratic process and now we need to fight back to restore the Citizens’ Board. Send a message to your legislators and Governor Dayton insisting they stand up to Big Agri-Business and reinstate the Citizen’s Board immediately.

Campaign Organizer - Temporary

Clean Water Fund and Clean Water Action in Minnesota will be hiring a temporary full-time organizer to develop and implement the organization’s campaigns in the Twin Cities Metro Area with a focus on the South Metro. We seek an energetic and experienced organizer who will spearhead work on a variety of water related issues with a strong emphasis on member leadership development. Clean Water Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization providing education, organizing and technical assistance to strengthen grassroots environmental efforts.

Fix Flawed Federal Chemical Legislation

In just eight years we’ve passed nine policies that protect families from BPA, formaldehyde, mercury and other toxins. Our ability to continue this leadership is under threat.
