Hoods are called “burqa” in Arabic falconry and come in many beautiful and different designs for your falcon. This shot at 1/200 at F4.5. The Arab hood is marked by the circular pattern to make the hood fit the contours of the eyes and head. These are typically molded on a block and have a flat back with the braces woven in and out of leather pleats making an accordion of the back’s base. The advantage of this style of brace closure is that it is smooth and tends not to catch the bird’s crest feathers. This was shot in Abu dhabi.

Tile factory worker, Al Quoz

Lens 24-70, 1/160 at F11 and a 1,200 W strobe. Such a great subject, happy to pose for me, they all told me they don’t make tiles any more at this place in Al Quoz, they simply sort and stack coal, all day long and live and pray at the back of the yard, along with a couple of tiny kittens that were skipping around.

Quran tuition available. This shot taken in Sharjah, the more stricter Emirate next door to Dubai. Hand held, 1/200 at 5.6. Sharjah is the only Emirate in which the sale, possession and consumption of alcohol is banned. It also maintains the strictest decency laws in the UAE, introduced in 2001, with a conservative dress code required for both men and women. Mixing between unmarried men and women is illegal: “A man and a woman who are not in a legally acceptable relationship should not, according to the booklet, be alone in public places, or in suspicious times or circumstances.”

1/500 at F4.5. Al Ain oasis. Have you been to Al Ain? Have you visited one of the oases? If you have you may be lucky enough to catch a date farmer harvesting the crop. No ladders, no cranes, just one man and his knife and habool – a great sight to see.
