Mother’s Day Brunch was Fabulous this year!! I think I will make a tradition of it too. In the past, my kids have tried to make me breakfast in bed, but admittedly, I’m not a big fan of that. I don’t enjoy being woken up early on Mother’s Day – especially to food. I prefer to eat breakfast, late morning. Since I shared my day with Little Girl’s 3rd birthday, I wanted to invite my parents over, and have a big brunch. As part of our brunch, we had asparagus, ham and poached eggs, topped with hollandaise sauce. I love a slightly tangy, buttery hollandaise! Mmmm

The bottom layer is the asparagus, which I gave instructions for roasting the asparagus, here. For the ham, I purchased ham steaks, which come fully cooked, and just needed to be heated through. Frying the ham steak in a frying pan, for 3 minutes on each side, was easy enough. The next step is to poach the eggs. I will be posting instructions on poaching eggs, soon.

Now for the hollandaise sauce. I got the hollandaise sauce recipe from Closet Cooking. The sauce turned out great!

If I could give any one tip, that would be to watch the egg yolks so carefully, and to have your ingredients close by. It is really easy to let the yolks cook, instead of just thicken. If they start to cook, you will have lumps in your sauce. When thickening, between each addition, don’t wait too long to add the next ingredient.

I have been struggling with getting my oldest to read, lately. He hasn’t interested in reading, and I keep trying to find different books for him, to see if they spark any interest in him. The thought occurred to me, that maybe I’m not setting the best example for my kids, to gain a love of reading. I actually really enjoy reading a good book, but time and a busy schedule has prevented me from doing it more. The first half of the school year, I was great about reading to my kids every single night, but I have to admit that I haven’t been as good about it as of lately. For this reason, I am super grateful for the Franklin Anybook Reader.

If you don’t have as much time as you would like, to spend it reading to your kids, then let the Anybook Reader do it for you. I don’t think this reading tool should be a replacement for good quality time, reading to your kids, but in addition to. If one story each night is just not enough reading time for your child, then record a few extra stories on the Anybook Reader, and let your child be read to over and over again. Perhaps your child likes to fall asleep to the sound of your voice. The Anybook Reader can help with that!

To explain a little more, the Anybook Reader is a handheld electronic pen, that allows you to record up to 60 hours of stories. I recommend sitting down with your kids, and reading them some of their favorite stories, while recording them into the Anybook Reader. Then give your children the pen, and let them keep enjoying storytime, over and over.

The fantastic thing about this particular reader, is that it works with ANY of the books in your library. You don’t have to buy books specific to the brand. The reader comes with sheets of stickers, which you will need to do the recording. Simply apply a blank sticker to each page of your book. Then you will activate the sticker, with the pen, and record! When you have recorded each page, give the book to your child, and all they need to do is touch the pen to the sticker on each page. Voila!

Let your kids enjoy reading time over and over again, with the sound of your voice! I think my youngest likes the Anybook Reader the best. She can just lay in bed, listening to the Anybook Reader, while she waits for me to get her brothers settled in bed. It’s the perfect thing to keep her occupied, and waiting in her bed.

Since the last time asparagus was in season, I have been testing out different ways of cooking asaparagus, to find my favorite. I think roasting asparagus, is my favorite way to cook it, so far. As part of my Mother’s Day brunch, we had asparagus topped with ham, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Those recipes and cooking tips will be posted soon, but for now, I wanted to share how easy it is to roast asparagus. The asaparagus was perfectly cooked – Great flavor, and perfect amount of crunch.

My biggest Pinterest Challenge yet, is finally complete! I am so mad at myself right now because I took a before picture of the cabinet, and I can’t find it anywhere. It must have been erased off of the camera, before getting saved to my computer. Instead of showing you a  before picture, I will have to tell you about it, and you will have to take my word for it.

My Little Girl’s 3rd birthday was this past Sunday, and I really wanted to do something special for her. I had seen and heard about people turning old tv stands, and things, into play kitchens, and I wanted to do something similar. I decided I wanted to give Little Girl a dollhouse, but didn’t want to go through the huge expense of purchasing one. Making a dollhouse isn’t exactly cheap, but I think you still save some money. If you have great thrift stores, or garage sales around, then you can save even more. The doll furniture is where I ended up spending most of my money.

I started scouring garage sales and thrift stores, for the perfect tv stand. I finally found the one I’d been looking for, at Good Will. I only paid $7 for it too! The original tv stand was a medium brown, with one shelf inside. The brackets hanging on the doors, were already installed on this tv stand, and I thought they would make perfect bedrooms.

Here is what I did, to convert this very basic TV stand, into a dollhouse, fit for a princess:

I first spray painted the tv stand, white. The next thing I did was hunt for scrapbook pages, for wallpaper. I found that using a sturdier paper, or card stock, was better for preventing bubbling. I removed the shelves from the doors, and used Loctite Stik’N Seal Indoor Adhesive, to glue the pages into place. I wanted to get all of my “wallpaper” in before placing the flooring. I used two different scrapbook pages for the front doors, and found a cute ribbon to divide the two. Just about every room has a different “wallpaper”, to give a different feel to the room.

My next hunt was for carpet and vinyl scraps, for the flooring. I went to Carpet One, and asked if they had any expired carpet samples. I got lucky with some berber. I happened to find some vinyl scraps in the garage, from our kitchen and bathroom flooring. I measured how much carpet and vinyl I wanted for each room, and used some kitchen shears, to do the cutting. I used some drops of Loctite Stik’N Seal Indoor Adhesive, to glue the flooring down. (I am loving this glue!)

Next up was to create a wall between the rooms of the main house. I had hubby cut out a piece of masonite, for me to paint and glue into place. The piece was a little weak and broke, so I had my dad cut another one out for me. I was going to have a doorway, but opted to have a solid piece in the upstairs, which made for a sturdier wall.

I didn’t want Little Girl to have to bend over to play, so my dad and I worked something out, for a means of a stand, which could double as a garage. I had an old wooden shelving unit in my son’s room, which wasn’t being used. It was one of those basic one shelves, that can be used as a shoe rack,  or something of the sort. My dad turned it on it’s side, added two more shelves to close up both ends, and screwed it into the bottom of the tv stand. My mom then made an elastic dust ruffle, which can slip on and off of the dollhouse. The colors match great with her room, and the dust ruffle can be easily removed, to get washed – if needed.

Lastly, I thought the dollhouse needed some knobs, for easy opening and closing. The little pink knobs were perfect. I purchased doll furniture at Toys R Us and Amazon, but you can thrift shop and garage sale for furniture. I searched, but didn’t have a lot of luck in my small town.

For the final touch, I had a 4 pack of princess dolls that I purchased while at Disney World last month, which I placed in the dollhouse. I covered the dollhouse with a sheet, and surprised Little Girl with it, on her birthday. She LOVES it! I think my DIY Dollhouse from repurposed furniture, was a huge success. I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.
