PokeTalk says that the ads on the screen pay for the call which is how the service can be free.

As PokeTalk puts it: “With PokeTALK you can call to over 70% of the world for free! This includes over 55 countries around the world, including all of North America and Australia, most of South America and Europe, as well as a majority of Asian countries. ”

PokeTalk is a newer service with this being our first time covering it.  It’s a great addition to our current voip list and a great new way to make free voip calls.

The internet is also available for free, meaning that if you brought your own headpphones and mic, you might even be able to make a few free voip calls right in the Apple store.  Sure they might look at you funny, but I doubt they will say anything since customer is almost always king…

The fees? It will cost .19 USD per connect, a relatively hefty fee.  If you just need to check your mail quickly, it may be worth it.  But for longer conencts, you might want to just pay Boingo’s usual hourly rate of about $5 per hour or $10 for a day.

The new Skype wifi feature is available on the newest Mac version of skpe. Pc users have to wait.

Unfortunately no.  Google Voice is limited to previous Grand Central account users only.  However, we are hopeful that the new switch to Google Voice means that Google is still interested in the project and will eventually open up to new applicants for the service.

Google does promise to open the service up to everyone. In their question and answers page, Google states: “We expect to have the service ready for new users in a matter of weeks, and are focused on opening it as soon as possible.”

Yahoo had their own voip service previously which turned into JaJah.  We had hopes that AIM voip would work out, but alas, all has failed and Aim Voip is permanantly cancelled. 

Our recommendation? If you use Aim Voip, spend your credit because there is no telling if you will even get a refund. If you have a lot of credit left, start emailing them or calling to get that refund back!

The service will shutdown for good March 25, 2009.

If you wanted to use Opomi without ever buying credit, Opomi offers the ability to make free 15 minute trial calls, twice per account without credit.  This means that as long as you keep registering free voip accounts with Opomi you’ll get 30 minutes of free calling time.  Sure it’s a bit annoying to register account after account, but that is the price of using the system without buying credit.

Cheap Calls to India?
SmartVoip is offering calls to India at only 1.5 eurocents per minute to India landline and 2 eurocents per minute to India mobile.

Our Recommendation?
Like we do with most Betamax services, we end up creating 100s of accounts to make calls to the free destinations.  After a certain point the free calls run out, but we just make another account, as simple as that.
