Awesome! Some non-soy, non-animal alternatives for protein!Way, way back thousands of years ago or something, South Americans were prohibited from eating quinoa for fear it would make them too strong and they could overtake the country.Talk about controlling the masses

Food Pyramid scheming

Three cheers for the consistency of our government: take a SAD food pyramid and make it even worse. As Dr. Walter Willet, chairman of the Harvard School of Public Health, says, "While it is good to see the old pyramid gone, the new pyramid conveys nothing." While the illustration promoting exercise may be a step forward, with the pyramid itself, one ought to ask, "where's the food?" There is no text to explain the color coded vertical bars representing food groups and non-food groups. Despite our vast increase in knowledge concerning healthful nutrition since the first pyramid in 1992, OUR government has created a new food pyramid that conveys none of this knowledge such as the importance of omega-3 fats and the dangers of trans fats and highly processed carbs. If few Americans followed the recommendations of the old pyramid which illustrated specific types of foods, just how many folks does our government think would be willing to spend time on the Internet for nutritional health?

I just went to Walgreen's looking for a protein bar as I was about to do some curls. I found your Builder's bar and read the ingredients. I was looking for something that had a lot of protein, but was also made with healthy ingredients and not hydrogenated stuff. I found your product and bought 3 of them. I was hoping it would also taste decent. Man was I surprised! The chocolate bar was awesome! My friend gave me an EAS protein bar the other day and it grossed me out. I was also turned off by the word "artificial" on their label. I'm glad I found Clif! This was my first Clif bar, but I'll be back for more! Well, time to do some curls my friends!

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. It refers to human interference with plant or animal reproduction by the artificial manipulation of DNA. A few months ago, all of us at Clif Bar watched Deborah Koons Garcia's filmThe Future of Food about the GMO debate. Check it out!

I just wanted to tell everyone at Clif that you guys entirely rock.

I've suffered from freaky blood sugar ever since I was a little kid. I've been put on the "5 small meals a day" regimen for just about forever, and it's been hard to find something with sustained energy that will keep me going throughout those periods of time so I don't get tired and cranky between meals. I heart Clif and Luna bars.

In addition, I'm going through some medical issues where I am expecting to gain a fair amount of weight. I have gone from cold turkey to 5 days a week at the gym, and I really don't think I could do it without my guilty pleasures of S'mores Luna and Chocolate Brownie Clif bars, when in fact they aren't that guilty at all.

Kudos.

I "grew" it in a stocky vase at my desk. It is truly one of the scariest things I think I have ever seen. Who decided to make it green? Why are it's eyes so huge? That sounds great. Am looking for various forms of healthy brownie food for my 11 year Brownie Hog. My boys are avid Luna fans still.

Also picked some "phalsa berries" and saved some for you from the Gir forest last week(the last natural reserve for aisatic lions in India). They are dehydrated (so i could bring them back in the US legitimately).

I enjoyed the clif shots that were handed out every so often - they were just the shot I needed! Most of all, though, I'd like to rave about the new Clif Builder bars. I got one of these samples in a race pack earlier this year and waited breathlessly for it to come out on the shelves. This is my favorite post-workout/race treat.
I too have walked the path of trying different morning beverages. Get over it and enjoy the coffee. Most of the time, for me, it is more about the rich flavor coupled with a toasted bread product and the ritual you speak of. Some mornings it is just caffeine. I've come to decide that it brings my great pleasure, so why deny it. One cup is certainly good for us.There are times where I don't feel like having coffee. This is a rare time of year - never can tell when it will arrive- but sometimes I just don't feel like having it and tea sounds more appealing.I figure this is my body's built regulator telling me to change it up once in a while without having to force it.

Every day there's a new study put out that may have merit belonging in a scientific journal but not as the lead story of the local news. What's sad is that the media perpetuate this cycle, and the low-carb craze and chocolate consumption are good examples: one day they're bad for you, the next day they'll cure cancer.

I'll never forget back during the low fat days seeing an obese person picking up a specially ordered case of Snackwell cookies at the grocer, obviously thinking that no fat in food means no fat from eating it. Must've eaten a lot of sugars!

We all agree that global warming is occuring. In fact, it has been happening since the last Ice Age.How do we know to what extent humans are accelerating the warming?I agree that it is good to reduce the amount of fossil fuel emissions for many reasons (pollution being the main one) but how do we know that stopping CO2 emissions will slow down or reverse global warming? The answer to both questions above is that we don't know the answer to either question. The natural forces that create temperature fluctuations on Earth are basically unknown.

Black friday was terrifying. Still in detox.Dark diapers are bad diapers indeed. So dark chocolate it is - thanks! Off to run Las Vegas marathon on Sunday.Only in Vegas can you:(1) Get married at a run through chapel at mile 5(2) Run with 25 Elvis'(3) Bet on who is going to win ( Don't back me Tara - still carrying Thanksgiving...)But I am being powered by Clif Bar. The shots (where's the vodka in them?) , the bars and the gels. Love 'em.Will enjoy recovery dark chocolate.CheersJason

Alas, milk chocolate doesn't provide those glorious nutrients known as polyphenols (antioxidant/anti-inflammatory powerhouses)! The darker the better when it comes to chocolate (not diapers)!Gorging is a funny word and one I wouldn't recommend putting in front of anything containing sugar (scenes from the movie Chocolat flashing through my head). If you plan to particpate in the day of great feasting, I recommend walking it off in downtown Portland simply to witness the biggest shopping day of the year. It makes for great browsing & people wathching (but not shopping)!Looking forward to the flushables! Wow! Cool diapers!

TaraWhat's so hot nutritionally about dark chocolate? Can I gorge on that instead of milk chocolate and not pack on the pounds?Has it got less sugar? A miracle I say. As a newbie to America from Australia, I gather Thursday entails enormous amounts of consumption followed on Friday by the greatest spending spree on gods green-ish earth. Is that about the breadth of it?And hats off to your hubby for changing his surname. I did the same (only 3 extra letters though) and at that time I was a school teacher...the students had a field day after summer vacation to hear that a male teacher had a new surname. The therapy continues...

Stack the pretzel like pancakes but with peanut butter in between.Or take the small hersey chocolate bars you hand out at halloween and scoop out the peanut butter.

I'm glad you used Fig Newtons as an example. I've bought them occasionally as a snack, but recently read the nutrition information. The recent TV ad mentions that triathletes eat these for energy - yet the ingredients list is not so good. Why do the giant food companies insist on using enriched flour and high froctose corn syrup in everything? You guys have proven it's not necessary to use them to have a tasty food.

I have to say that I was in a bit of "health" culture shock myself during a recent New Orleans visit - lots of smokers. Yikes! I was there for a fitness nutrition conference - quite a place for that!I was shocked that there was not a trail along the river for a walk or a run. There is something called the River Walk but it is so short you have do run back and forth like ten times to get in a 45 minute run.I do have to say that once we tripped off the beaten path we discovered some gems for eating pleasure! I had never been to the south before so it was fun to explore so many new foods! I really had no idea that there were that many new ways of preparing foods! We discovered 2 restaurants that were worth every single fried calorie! - Dick and Jenny's- Jacques-Imo's CafeNot only was the food great, but the atmosphere as awesome. You just wanted to stay there all night trying new foods! Yam fritters!

Eri has a point - boiling in the skin seems the way to go. Once you shuck the huck and cottony, spider web layers. I too struggled with the 'easiest' way to prepare the Fava (Luuke...I am your Faava!!) Anyhow, it's a pretty amazing veggie and well worth the trouble. Nothing for the faint hearted if looking for a quick meal, but if you have the time, half a bottle of Pinot, Ella's Greatest Hits and a positive mental attitude, Fava's can actually be quite enjoyable. They were the meat of the Fertile Crescent you know. More protein than most other available commodities at the time. And apparently, only falafel made of Fava can be considered 'true' falafel.

Did you know you can just steam/parboil the favas in their skins? Drain, then dust them with sea salt and/or a sprinkel of cayenne, squeeze a bit of lime on top. Then, to eat, just pop them out of their skins (like edamame in Japanese restaurants). It's a great snack/appetizer food that way. Another fave way is to wok them with crushed garlic, minced ginger, soy sauce and a dash of mirin (sweet cooking sake). Add hot sauce to taste, and toss. This version is messier than above, but very yummy. BTW, I grew up hating favas and lima beans, but now I like them.

To Hybrid or Not to Hybrid???

I recently had to give back my sexy Audi (sniff, sniff) and get a new car. I had done a pre-paid lease on the Audi while a high-paid corporate slave, and since then left, started my own business and while growing, it's still nothing near my corporate slave salary.I originally thought I'd get a hybrid, but they are damn expensive and when I did the math on gas mileage and savings it just didn't pay. So then I'd be buying it for principal only, and I decided that right now I wasn't flush with cash enough to afford to do it just for principal. So I did another 3-year lease in hopes that in 3 years there will be a LOT more choices for hybrid cars.

I am very impressed with the Nectar bars also. I had my first one today (cranberry apricot almond) and am now looking for the best deal on bulk packs. Very impressive product. I am also impressed by the very existence of this blog! Very cool indeed.

This planet has been getting along just fine without biotech for a long time.. i think it has alot to do with commercialism.. bigger is better!! sell more!! woot.. consequences usually play a small part. i'm glad you brought this topic up.. i hope more people read it and do some research to educate themselves.oh also, stop being n00bs and eat mojo bars, they rule..

I love Clif Bar's dedication to going organic, and thank you so much for continuing to increase the percentage of organic ingredients in your bars. Over the years you have become more and more organic. Now don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the strides you've made. But will the market fundamentals and suppliers ever allow for 100% organic?

Happy (Organic) Birthday

Hi Brian! Thanks so much for your comment. You have asked a good question about organic. It is possible to reach 100% organic, however, it is pretty much dictated by the types of ingredients in the product. A product like Clif Bar contains some ingredients that are not available in an organic form. This will prevent us from being able to reach 100%. Examples of these ingredients are the added vitamin and minerals. We are, however, attempting to add more organic ingredients as they become available. In recent years, we have created new products, such as Clif Nectar, that do contain 100% organic ingredients.

Hi Dina,LUNA Sunrise should just be starting to arrive in stores now. The best place to find it immediatly is Target. In the coming weeks, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Drugstore.com should have them. Come August/September, you should be able to find Sunrise anywhere LUNA is located. I hope that helps!

It seems that the Clif Bar wrappers are not recyclable. Please correct me and educate me if I am wrong, but it seems to be made of a plastic/alimunum product. If this is true, Clif Bar needs to change this if they are truly concerned about landfills and our environment.

Hi, this is Diana from CLIF BAR--I work in our sustainability program. You???re right, our wrappers do go to the landfill right now. This is an important issue for us though and it???s one that we???ve been working on for years. We???re looking for a package that???s better for the planet, but there???s currently no sustainable wrapper out there that keeps our products fresh until you eat them. But stay tuned--while it???s an extremely tough challenge, we???re not giving up the search!

Sorry it???s taken me a few days to reply, but I just returned from 2 straight days of being surrounded by pregnant women, OBs, doulas, and prenatal yoga instructors to discuss maternity related nutrition concerns.I do feel GI has some merit in fine tuning meal plans but it has many flaws that have yet to be worked out. When you???re pregnant, keeping your blood sugar levels steady is important for your energy level and reducing nausea. Choosing the right portions and right types of carbohydrates is critical. GI can help guide your choices but should not be your sole means of choosing foods (i.e. my carrots & donuts example).LUNA doesn???t contain artificial sweeteners like Splenda; but if you're looking for a bar that tastes less sweet, or contains less sugar, maybe give MOJO or ZBaR a try.Be well!

What is the actual glycemic index rating for Clif Nectar Dark Chocolate bar (my fave)? I noticed it says "Low Glycemic" on the packaging, though your blog says Clif bars are medium glycemic, and I don't see where it says what the actual GI rating figure is.
Hey there Mary Ann and DT, Apologies for not writing a response until now--three months later. Here's what Jeff, in Consumer Services, had to say about the GI of nectar bars:"At this time we do not have the specific GI for Dark Chocolate & Walnut because not all of the flavors have been tested. We did test Cinnamon Pecan which has a GI of 33 and Lemon Vanilla & Cashew, which has a GI of 48. Due to the formulation of each nectar bar being similar, the GI for the flavors will range between 30 and 55." I hope that helps and again, apologies for the very late response. Let me know if you've got any more questions. Keep reading the blog! ~amy

If you shop specials or get involved in a community supported agriculture program it not only is on par cost-wise for with conventional fresh produce, but it is also more convenient! You have to make a few trade-offs here and there. Organic berries can be pricey and I have a price threshhold at which I can't let myself pay the money. But in that case I go organic frozen - they are less expensive and I still get organic berries for my cereal. There are somethings for certain you will always pay more for. Organic milk for example, it costs more than conventional but you also get more vitamin E and no hormones etc. That is my take.

Hi Dan,Thanks for your comment! I really did open a can of warms on vegetarian endurance athletes. Considering some vegetarians still eat fish and dairy, I should have been more specific. You can certainly get the amino acids your body hungers in dairy; and with a carefully planned, knowledgeable diet (with supplementals) you can even meet those needs as a vegan. Knowledge is key!In working with many endurance athletes (including myself) however, I've never met an endurance athlete on a vegan plan who wasn't struggling to meet dietary needs at the level they needed to optimize their performance. This, of course, is purely anecdotal evidence, and I am sure there's plenty of research out there to contradict me. I am sure you know of vegan athletes who do just fine. For fun, I've always wanted to do a mini study with the vegan endurance athletes in the office, but HR won't let me draw blood at the office & doing random lab studies aren't in the marketing budget to date.

I also highly recommend "Real Food" by Nina Planck, which is more focused on our diets (but is not about "dieting").

Everyone in my state, Illinois can be licensed by the state as a LDN with the same credentials. Soon RD will be obsolete/optional and Licensing like nursing, OT's and MD will be the way. Thanks ADA for not supporting us and pushing stronger regulations. I often wonder, was that a way for ADA to keep minorities out of the profession? Now the Non minorities are suffering.Mindy the RD

Swanner:I work for Amy's and I have had that very same feeling. When hankering for some of our tasty food, I just walk over to the Plant and toss some cash in the vending machine. Even, though our vending machine (well, there are two actually) gets refilled all the time, there are times (late in the afternoon) when I have shown up and there have only been a one or two items from which to choose.Oh well. Maybe we could get a clif bar vending machine?

Heya Michelle, Thanks for the comment ??? very cool when folks take the time to blog back. It gets lonely in this big wooden crate. You???ll rest easy knowing the crisis is over???they have restocked the machine! Always nice to have an excuse to take a walk (like food), but machines will do the job in a pinch. We don???t have a vending machine of our own yet???but I do keep a drawer stocked pretty well here. Amazing how many products I can down in a day.Cheers from Berkeley!

As for getting the word out to kids, last year we gave out Zbars at Halloween. We gave the kids a choice between candy and these 'energy' bars and were surprised that many of the children chose the Zbars. It was either because they have already begun to think in terms of less candy as instructed by parents, or it was something new with an attractive label; I don't know. But we figured that if a few of these showed up in the kids goodie bags and they liked them, then maybe they would ask there parents to get some more.Perhaps if you marketed them this way for Halloween, maybe even make a snack size for the season, you could increase awareness of the product?

Even though I can jump into the warehouse to grab a bar, sometimes they're all gone (a few other folks in the office have the same addiction as I do), in which case having a bag full of your halloween treats sitting in my desk drawer would do me some good.
Hello,I am a Canadian living in Australia, and I REALLY miss having Clif bars to eat on the run. Especially as I live out in a rural area where I look insane if I ask for sushi.Do anyone know of a wholesale importer of Clif bars? I looked on the Clif webpage, but the companies that may export here do not have the flavours I would like.Any info would be great.N.B. To the Clif company, Australians would love your bars if you can set up an importer here - the triathletes and surfers would lap them up! In the cities people are slowly also getting more interested in an organic/healthy lifestyle.Cheers,April

Molly,Stay away from the mystery red sauce on that burrito! I grew up in Chicago and my childhood memories of what a burrito was consisted of a flour tortilla with some strips of skirt steak and some picante or a dash of Tabasco on it. If you wanted to dress it up, you put some frijoles and even some rice. Top it off with some lettuce, onions, and cheese. If things were fast in the kitchen, ground beef and onions was the substitute. Now back in the early 1970's, anything called Mexican food was Taco Bell. The cheese was cheddar and the picante was Old El Paso. I guess we had to make sacrifices. Does anyone remember the Bell Burger? Now that I am in Texas, I too have encountered the Burrito As Big As a Dog, or your head, or even your hand bag. The only differnce is that most are smothered in queso instead of the radioactive red sauce.I was sad to see the Cherry Covered Chocolate Luna is gone, but I am jazzed about the Margarita Shot Bloks! Way to go CLIF kitchens.

Liz, I am so pleased that you know what I'm talking about. I, too, grew up in the 70's with the ground beef tacos on Ortega shells with Old El Paso picante sauce. Totally! But when I graduated high school, went off to college, and started buying my own food, I discovered authentic Mexican food from small, family owned taquerias. This is where I fell in love with the now elusive Chicago burrito.

Well, what about Tacos?I was in San Diego and tracked down a 'fish taco' that was fantastic! It sounded quite odd when I heard people from here talking about the 'fish tacos' they had when out there... Not bad... I've tried to make them here since I got back and have had mixed results but it's fun trying...I hate Taco Hell food! Ever since I had a 'Burrito' Supreme open up in my lap while in a new suit... White shirt... Tie... Most expensive 'cheap' lunch I've ever had...I've also had issues finding MoJo bars around mid-Michigan...
Hey Robert-I can't complain about tacos in the Bay Area because I actually know a good place---both for fish and chicken. I heard SD has great fried fish tacos.Sorry about your Taco Supreme issue. I had a similar problem when I ordered a 7-layer burrito, only I didn't drop it--I threw it on the floor of my car out of pure disgust.I will try to find out about Mojo in Michigan. Stay warm!!!

Hi Susie,This is Diana???-I work in the Sustainability Program at CLIF Bar. You???re absolutely right about the wrappers???-they aren???t recyclable and they go straight to the landfill after you eat the bar. It???s an important issue for us; so important that we???ve spent the last few years working on finding a package that???s better for the environment. Unfortunately, there???s currently no sustainable wrapper out there that keeps the products fresh until you eat ???em. But we???re not giving up the search. Check out ???Rapping about Wrappers???--a blog entry Amy and Grady posted on May 12th in response to wrapper woes. Thanks for your concern and keep the questions, comments and suggestions coming. We love to hear what you???ve got to say. And stay tuned ??? we???ll be sure to share on our website when we have more news.

Psyched to hear that you're a fan. Have you had a chance to try the new Mojo Peanut Butter Pretzel? We don't have a product that's 100% gluten free. Products like Clif and Luna have a trace amount of gluten that comes from the organic rolled and toasted oats. The closest that we have to offering a gluten free product is our 100% organic fruit and nut bar--Nectar. It doesn't contain gluten in the ingredients, however, due to the manufacturing process, there's the possibility that a trace amount of gluten can appear in the bars. Hope that helps!

Hi,First... I love Clif bars -- all of them. Better than most other bars, especially the healthy ingredients!I've also read the book, Raising the Bar. Great!I hear the company is rewarding employees for purchasing hybrid cars. Great idea. Another great way to use less gasoline -- e.g. almost none -- is to buy a diesel car (used/newish are easy to find on Craig's List) and then use bio-diesel. No gas required. Berkeley has a wonderful bio-diesel station: BioFuel Oasis on 4th St. I just did, and it's been great!Check it out, and really feel good about driving. :-)Many cheers,Kimberly Hughes

Hey Kimberly,Funny you mention the BioFuel Oasis. We just transitioned our old fleet of gas guzzlers into nine new vehicles that will all be running on a percentage of biodiesel (which is 85% veggie oil)...AND, we get fuel for our Berkeley fleet from the BioFuel Oasis. What makes the Oasis even cooler is the fact that they make their biodiesel with recycled veggie oil.Lots of good stuff!

I just wanted to pop in and say that Raising The Bar has become one of my favorite business books ever, and I've read a ton of them. It's sad, but it is rare to read about a company who has managed to stick to its roots, guns, and philosophy and prosper while doing so. It is kind of painful to see what's happening to the organic/health food market with everyone selling out to Big Business, so thanks for being the lone ranger. The book has also has motivated me to go out and ride a bike, so thanks for that as well.

HEY ALL...I just wanted to share my story of how I became HOOKED on Clif Bar's! My roomate who was on the this past season of "The Biggest Loser" had them in his supplement bin above the fridge and I had not had the chance to visit the grocery store that week. I play basketball on a professional level and I am always on the lookout for new products that give me an extra boost or provide the protein I need in my diet. I happened to see the ClifBar and just grabbed it thinking that it would be another tasteless protein bar... QUITE the contrary! I was more than surprised with the ingredients and even MORE surprised with the taste and consitency of the bar itself. The bar was AMAZING and has become a part of my daily diet. I eat one in the morning and immediately after my evening workouts.I just wanted everyone to know that this bar is the truth...An amazing source of extra protein and a great tasting supplement... You guys have a great thing going there, Keep up the good work!!!

I think Earth Month would be a good start. How can I make it happen? Who determines such things? Is there a calendar council? How about a month monitor?

Burrito follow up

Molly, Where are you buying such burritos? It sounds like you are not getting the authentico stuff, just someone's attempt at a wrap if you will. You should ask some of your office mates where to get a really good butrrito. I am sure some of them know where to get the goods. Tacos are great too, but you can't beat the simplicity and the perfection of a burrito. All this talk makes me want to get a burrito. I gotta go...Pedro

Pedro,I have been struggling forever...I think my taste in burritos must be odd--because everyone I work with thinks I'm nuts. I did find one place, Taqueria Zamorano in Oakland, that has proper burritos. It's a hike, though--but worth it. Thanks so much for your feedback! Hope you have a wonderful burrito experience today!Cheers, M

Wetsuit chafe or hickey?

That is MOST CERTAINLY a hickey. I have worn wetsuits my entire life and have NEVER seen a wetsuit rash in that spot. Typically they come from the zipper area where the two pieces of material meet and overlap IN THE BACK! Additionally, most every wetsuit I have ever seen has a much lower neck line than the peculiar placement of said hickey. My judgement is for the plaintiff (HICKEY).

ah pedro; i have to defend myself. i too have worn wetsuits my whole life and will admit that i have never received such a nasty chafing. however, in my disillusionment that fine saturday morning, i absentmindedly forgot to apply the all-important body glide. since the tri suit typically rides higher than your average o'neill, the chafeage is in exact location for a typical neckline irritation--especially for someone who tends to swim looking up, forcing the neoprene to fold awkwardly against my neck.

If it was from a wetsuit, wouldn't it be a complete ring/line and not just an isolated, round spot?

Ouch! What biting evidence against you! But, hey! I would be arguing in FAVOUR of the hickey...Nobody wants to admit to a "wetsuit chafe."Amy, I'd suggest you change the story.
