Two performances full of positives, but results not what either Cliffe FC side wanted over the weekend. A narrow 2-1 loss on Saturday to Hemingbrough United, and a battling 4-1 defeat at defending champions Wigginton Grasshoppers on Sunday.

Saturday 3rd December 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 0-0
FT: Cliffe FC 1 – 2 Hemingbrough United

A narrow derby sees Hemingbrough United come away with all three points, after completing a 2-1 comeback in the second half. The first half was a goalless affair, with the Collins brothers coming closest for both sides – Tom hitting the outside of the post for the team in red on a rare occasion he was able to escape the close attention of Kevin Taylor. Dan had a chance for the home side, a goal kick flicked on by Tom Grundy, Dan rounding the ‘keeper but the ball just ahead of him eventually his shot hitting the side netting. 0-0 was the HT score.

Cliffe had been guilty of starting second halves slowly, but started Saturday’s second-half strongly, and had the lead – Isaac Leach unleashing a shot that found it’s way into the top corner for 1-0. Cliffe knew Hemingbrough would respond, but continued to defend strongly with Paul Brown showing his best performance in a Cliffe shirt since signing. Sadly for Cliffe, man-of-the-match Joe Dack was forced off the field with a foot injury – a motivated Matthew Birch replaced him. Cliffe nearly doubled their lead, Tom Grundy seeing his long range effort hit the cross bar and clear, agonising for the home side. A throw-in from Hemingbrough’s left wing lead to a cross that was flicked into the back of the net for 1-1, Mike Brown claiming it. The game now looked like a draw would be a fair result, with only a special individual effort or error to decide the game, but as Cliffe’s luck this season has been at times this season, a goalkeeping lapse saw the away side get the winning goal – A Guy May shot evading stand-in keeper Scott Birch to put Hemingbrough ahead – a cruel blow. Cliffe pushed for an equaliser but time ran out, 1-2 FT.

The manner of performance is something to work with, and surely the results can improve if Cliffe are to drag themselves up the Division 1 table. Next Saturday it the long trip to Kirkbymoorside – whilst Cliffe FC Reserves will be hungry for a home win against Fulford.

Before Saturday’s match, both sides observed a minute’s silence in honour of in memory of the plane crash in Colombia last Monday which, among others, claimed the lives of players and officials of the Brazilian football club Chapecoense.

—

Sunday 4th December 2016
York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
HT: 2-0
FT: Wigginton Grasshoppers 4 – 1 Cliffe FC Sunday

What seemed to look like another morning set up for a poor result, what followed was a galvanising performance that saw reigning champions Wigginton Grasshoppers have to work for their 4-1 win.
It was a cliche Sunday morning to drag a few lads out of bed for the away trip to Wigginton – Cliffe FC’s third trip to face Wiggy this season.

Cliffe defended stubbornly, and outworked the home side for the majority of the first half – Grasshoppers had the lead on the 26th minutes, a counter attack. It was 2-0 at HT, the second goal coming on the 35th minute. Cliffe had their chances, and it could’ve been level at half-time for sure.
Two quick goals after the hour mark saw Grasshoppers leap into a 4-0 lead, 65th and 67th minute penalty. Cliffe scored a deserved goal in the dying embers of the match – a goal from the right wing both Collins brothers claiming, 4-1 FT. MOTM: Matthew Birch.

Cliffe FC Sunday are through to quarter-final of County Cup, with a dominant 5-0 away win at Brandesburton. Saturday’s still aren’t much to report, a 6-0 defeat at Rawcliffe for the First Team.

Sunday 27th November 2016
East Riding County FA – Vice President’s Cup – 2nd Round
HT: 0-2
FT: Brandesburton 0 – 5 Cliffe FC Sunday

Cliffe FC Sunday made the near 80-mile round trip to face Brandesburton in North Frodingham – a picturesque morning and nice pitch welcomed the away side – even arriving 30 minutes before the home side!

From kick-off it was obvious Cliffe were going to dominate from start to finish, and it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken – but Cliffe just couldn’t seem to do so, Aidy Wood having a forgettable day in front of goal on his comeback. A penalty got Cliffe on their way, Dan Collins powering the ball past the ‘keeper for 1-0. Trotting up for a corner, Tom Hogg scored a deft-flick off his boot to make it 2-0 before the break. Cliffe comfortable, but job not done.

Second half, Cliffe turned it on once more, Kieran Dinsdale scoring with a shot that nestled in the far bottom corner for 3-0. Layton Hallam in his sitting midfield role, apparently in a French international style as stated by Hallam himself, earned him MOTM award. Hogg had another, this time a cheeky back-heel that ended up in the other bottom corner for 4-0, Hogg now chasing a hat-trick. Hogg’s trick evaded him, but scoring wasn’t complete as Glynn Richardson scored his third in two games – his shot taking an age to go in for 5-0, FT.

A welcome win for Jackson Lucitt’s side, a morale boost, and a dominant performance to go along with the win. A last-8 place in the County Cup, along with a place in the later stages of the York FA Cup.

—

Saturday 26th November 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 4-0
FT: Rawcliffe 6 – 0 Cliffe FC

Cliffe FC lose 6-0 at Rawcliffe, a poor first half leaving their much improved second half performance too steep of a mountain to climb.

Billed as a six-pointer, Cliffe just didn’t turn up – figuratively and literally – some players falling foul of an erroneous away ground postcode, and the developing first half performance that saw Rawcliffe run up a comfortable 4-0 half-time score line.

Cliffe improved second half, and had some scoring chances of their own, but didn’t get themselves on the scoresheet, and after being caught for Rawcliffe’s 5th the wind firmly taken out of Cliffe’s sails – Rawcliffe added a sixth before full-time. MOTM: Phil Newstead.

A growing task stares Cliffe in the face, and it’s going to take a big effort from the existing squad and hopeful additions as 2017 rears it’s head. Next week, its Hemingbrough United at Oxen Lane.

Tough weekend for Cliffe FC, but the club keeps going – 5-1 defeat at Tockwith on Saturday, 12-3 defeat at title contenders Malt Shovel on Sunday.

Saturday 19th November 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 3-0
FT: Tockwith 5 – 1 Cliffe FC

Another bad day on the road for Cliffe FC, losing 5-1 at Tockwith – individual errors being punished leaving Cliffe with too much to do in the end.
Cliffe were 3-0 at the break, the aforementioned errors seeing Tockwith gifted their goals. Cliffe did have a set of chances themselves, Keiran Gallagher having a shot saved at 0-0, and Cliffe looking a threat on the break. 3-0 at HT.

After HT, Cliffe were much better with Matt Holmes at CB with eventual MOTM Paul Brown also at CB. Isaac Leach got Cliffe a goal, Kev Taylor with the assist, Leach racing through one-on-one before waiting for the ‘keeper to make his move and slot the ball past him for 3-1. Tockwith pushed for more goals towards the end as the game opened up and got two more goals, again sloppy from Cliffe’s point of view to see the home side win 5-1, FT. MOTM was Brown, but special mention to Alex Hartley who stepped up to play in goal after a GK crisis which saw Cliffe have three unavailable ‘keepers.

Next week is a six-pointer, away to Rawcliffe. Must win for Cliffe FC. Cliffe FC Reserves game this weekend was postponed.

—

Sunday 20th November 2016
York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
HT: 7-0
FT: Malt Shovel 12 – 3 Cliffe FC Sunday

Life in the top flight continues to be hard for Cliffe FC Sunday, Malt Shovel handing out a 12-3 defeat. Cliffe have positives work with, a second half rally that had Shovel rattled and frustrated.
It was 7-0 at the break, a flurry of goals in the first 30 minutes before HT. The scoreline of the second half was 5-3 as Cliffe got themselves on the score-sheet – a Dave Jackson own-goal. Glynn Richardson squeezed in two headers before the end of the match, which saw Shovel score 5 more times in the second-half for 12-3 FT. Callum Ransome was deserved MOTM for Cliffe FC, a solid display as the solo striker, unfortunate not to get on the score-sheet.

Next week, it’s County Cup tie for Cliffe FC Sunday – away to Brandesburton.

Saturday 12th November 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Reserve C
HT: 0-0
FT: Civil Service Reserves 2 – 0 Cliffe FC Reserves

With the first team game and Sunday game postponed as Oxen Lane drainage works are completed, all eye were on the Reserves’ trip to Civil Service at York College.

Cliffe matched Civil Service from the outset, and if you weren’t told which team resided higher up the table, you wouldn’t have been able to split the sides. Both teams had chances, Civil striking the bar in the opening minutes, and Kieran Dinsdale tested the home ‘keeper. As has been the theme of their season, Cliffe eventually were guilty of not taking their chances when on top, as the half-time whistle crept up on the team in orange, 0-0 HT.

Cliffe again matched their hosts and as it remained 0-0, it was hard to tell which way the game would go – a tale of two penalty shouts would swing the way of the hosts. First Dinsdale, who had impressed all day, went down in the box/edge of the box but neither a free-kick or penalty was awarded. Minutes later Civil had a penalty decision go their way, penalty awarded and converted by their captain for 1-0 – a cruel blow to Cliffe. Cliffe now had to open up to chase, Isaac Leach coupled with Dinsdale looked most likely to get Cliffe back into it. As football goes, by opening the game to chase, Cliffe left themselves open and were picked off in the last few minutes, Civil scoring on the break for 2-0. 2-0 being the final scoreline. MOTM was awared to Isaac Leach, playing in the same side as his dad, Simeon.

Saturday 5th November 2016
East Riding County FA – Senior Country Cup – 2nd Round
HT: 2-2
FT: Cliffe FC 2 – 2 Hodgsons AFC
AET: 2-6

With Oxen Lane under drainage works, Cliffe FC were afforded the kind lend of Selby Town’s pitch, Hodgsons AFC the visitors from ER County League Division 1. It was the away side that had the lead after 15 minutes, a counter attack switched to the back post on the left wing for a low shot into the net, 0-1. Cliffe responded with their best spell of the tie, first equalising with a volley from Dan Richardson, Dan Collins with the assist, 1-1. Cliffe had the lead soon after, a quick corner from Collins to James Grundy – who set himself on the edge of the box and hit a curled effort that evaded everyone and the ‘keeper, 2-1 to Cliffe. Cliffe remained the better of the two side without extended their lead, and were punished just before half-time, a Hodgsons corner breaking to the edge of the box for a crashing shot that went in – 2-2 at the break.

Hodgsons came out the better of the two sides second half, but Cliffe handled the pressure well enough – but the home side were unable to carve out any clear chances either, 2-2 after 90 minutes and the tie went to extra-time. Hodgsons got themselves in front just midway through the first period of extra-time, a header at the near post, Dan Shaw in the Cliffe goal adamant he had both hands on the ball, 2-3. Cliffe changed formation for the second 15 minutes to chase the game, but were picked off a couple more times to see Hodgsons extend their lead to 2-5, and with Cliffe staying in all-out-attack, they conceded once more to bow out of the cup with a 2-6 reversal, FT AET. Cliffe’s MOTM was Eddie Gobby, another impressive display.

Cliffe FC return to their league scheduled next week, Rawcliffe are the opponents in YMEL Division 1.

—

Saturday 5th November 2016
East Riding County FA – Qualifying Cup – 2nd Round
FT: Brandesburton Reserves 5 – 4 Cliffe FC Reserves

Cliffe FC Reserves are also out of their section of the County FA Cup – a 5-4 defeat away to Brandesburton Reserves. Cliffe’s goalscorers were Kieran Gallagher, a first Cliffe goal from William Yarrow, Tim Mizen, and a superb effort from veteran Simeon Leach – 90 minutes and a goal from the 50 year old. MOTM: Kieran Dinsdale.

Next week it’s Civil Service Reserves away for Cliffe FC’s second string.

—

Sunday 6th November 2016
York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
HT: 0-1
FT: Thorpe United 2 – 2 Cliffe FC Sunday

A score-draw between the bottom two sides in the YSML Division 1 – 2-2 the final score, but a feeling of two points dropped by Cliffe’s side.
The morning began with the unveiling of the new kit, as sponsored by L R Joinery – a photo call with with Lee Carter and Richard Gibbons of L R Joinery before the warm up took place.

Cliffe looked more likely to score from the kick-off, but after a set of wasted chances, Thorpe got themselves a penalty. Scott Birch saved superbly in the Cliffe goal and some great last ditch blocks on the line kept the score at 0-0. Luke Zacharenko got Cliffe ahead, a Zola-esque flick from a corner to put it past the ‘keeper to put the away side 1-0 up before HT, a welcome lead at the break.

For all Cliffe’s dominance in the first half, Thorpe got themselves both level and quickly in front – first pouncing on a short clearance from Birch in goal, to finish into an empty net, 1-1. Then a stooping header from a low cross put the home side into an unlikely lead, 2-1. Cliffe now had it all to do, and it took an individual effort from Tom Hogg to get Cliffe level – breaking from centre-back, beating his marker and hitting a low left-foot drive past the ‘keeper for 2-2. Cliffe now had all the pressure, Tom Collins hitting the post, Nathan Parker, Dan Collins, Zacharenko and Hogg all coming close to putting Cliffe ahead but time ran out and 2-2 saw the points shared. MOTM: Callum Ransome for good display at left-back.

Next week it’s Marcia Bishopthorpe in league action.

A first league win of the season for Cliffe FC 1stXI, a heavy defeat for Cliffe FC Reserves, and a cup “draw” abandonment for Cliffe FC Sunday – is all marred by a serious injury to Andy Kirkham suffered on Sunday morning.

Sunday 30th October 2016
York FA – Sunday Cup – 2nd Round
HT: 0-1
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday A – A Hounds FC – Game abandoned on 83rd minute at 2-2.

An eventful morning down at Oxen Lane on Sunday, Cliffe FC Sunday and Hounds’ FA Cup tie abandoned at 2-2 on the 83rd minute due to Hounds being reduced to 6-men due to three red cards, and two injuries. Sadly, from Cliffe’s perspective, Andy Kirkham’s serious injury – confirmed as a broken bone and ruptured MCL in his right knee – is a massive dampener on Cliffe’s efforts that saw them comeback from 0-2 down to bring it back to 2-2 before the match was abandoned.

Whilst it’s now in the hands of York FA to decide the outcome of the tie, the events of the match went as follows – Hounds looked to dominate from the outset, but Cliffe stubbornly wouldn’t lie down for the Hounds, and the score remained 0-0 until midway in the first half, a deflected long range shot ending up in the back of the net from Hounds’ right back, 0-1. Hounds led at the break, but Cliffe were very much in the tie.

Hounds were reduced to 10-men early in the second half, the same incident that caused Kirkham’s injury. A horror tackle dealt with with a straight red. Hounds then extended their lead, another deflection, from a long range effort from Jamie England hitting Matt Birch on the way in, 0-2. Hounds two goal lead was something for them to hold onto, as Dan Collins got Cliffe back into it from a header for 1-2 – as Hounds eventually found themselves down to 8-men! Cliffe were now ruthless to get themselves back in the game and pushed Tom Hogg up top. Dan Collins won Cliffe an indirect freekick inside the Hounds penalty area, Dan laid the ball off for brother Tom who smashed the ball past the crowd of Hounds players on the line for 2-2. Hogg’s presence up top was felt further as he won a penalty kick for Cliffe with 6 or 7 minutes remaining. Tom Collins saw his spot kick saved, but was ordered to be retaken due to encroachment – however this would be the last action of the tie, as Hounds found themselves down to 6-men due to injuries and meaning the game had to be abandoned at 2-2 on the 83rd minute. A-A.

Next weekend, Cliffe FC Sundays are back in League action, away to Thorpe United’s Sundays – and this weekend’s game is very encouraging for Cliffe to build upon as they look to drag themselves up the Sunday league table.

Cliffe FC would like to extend their well wishes to club servant Andy Kirkham, as mentioned above he’ll now face a lengthy stint on the sidelines, and everyone connected to the club wishes him well on he hopefully speedy road to recovery.

—

Saturday 29th October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 1-1
FT: Cliffe FC 5 – 3 Heslington

Saturday was a good day for Cliffe FC, an important win against Heslington. 5-3 was the final scoreline, Dan Collins scoring a hat-trick, Tom Grundy and OG completing the scoring – a first league win of the season to move Cliffe off the foot of the table.

A strange start to the game for both sides, with the visitors having late arrivals meaning Cliffe began the game with two extra men – a coincidence with last season’s same fixture where Cliffe only started with 10-men due to a car being lost on the way to the game. With Heslington set up to hold on stubbornly and slow the game down, Cliffe were frustrated and couldn’t get any positive momentum. Cliffe eventually had a breakthrough, the ball falling to James Grundy in the box who somehow managed to set Dan Collins up with his standing foot, Collins nipping in at the foot of the post before the defender and keeper, 1-0 to Cliffe. Heslington, now up to 10-men, got an immediate equaliser, their superb #10 breaking down the right to set up the away side’s unlikely goal, 1-1. 1-1 was the HT scoreline as both sides now had 11-men each.

Cliffe were urged to up it a level, and get themselves in-front having being the much better side in the first half without the scoreline showing. Early goals in the second period got Cliffe into a 4-1 lead, Dan Collins with a header for his second, Tom Grundy with a superbly executed volley, and Collins then rounding the ‘keeper to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1. Cliffe looked like they could run riot from this point but Heslington remained stubborn and got another goal for 4-2, then an individual effort from their clear MOTM #10 made it 4-3 with about 15 minutes left. Kev Taylor continued to be a threat for Cliffe on the right wing, and Cliffe’s fifth came via and own-goal, a cross converted by the Heslington defender for 5-3 and settle the game beyond doubt, 5-3. Alex Oliver at centre-back was awarded MOTM for his strong display.

Some good football played in majority of the game, and positives to build upon for Cliffe to go along with the three points. Next week, it’s County Cup action, at home to Hodgons AFC from the East Riding County League.

—

Saturday 29th October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Reserve C
FT: Poppleton United Reserves 9 – 1 Cliffe FC Reserves

More lessons learned for Cliffe FC Reserves, as they go down to a heavy 9-1 defeat. Lewys Williams headed in Cliffe’s only goal, and other than that missed chances and lack of recognised goalkeeper is dearly costing Cliffe’s second string at the moment.

They are in County Cup action next week also, away to Brandesburton Reserves – a familiar opponent from Cliffe FC’s County League days in 2007-2009.

Press Release – Wednesday 26 October 2016

Cliffe FC awarded £15,000 thanks to Emergency Football Relief Fund grant

Grassroots sport in Cliffe, Selby is set to benefit from a major cash injection following the news that Cliffe FC have been awarded a grant of £15,004 from the Emergency Football Relief Fund – a scheme delivered by the Football Foundation that awarded grants to football facilities damaged as a result of storm Desmond.

In the case of Cliffe FC, the storm caused severe damage to their Oxen Lane home, rendering the pitch unplayable for 6 months, and leaving the club without a home ground for half of the 2015/16 season, and the local community without a playing field.

The grant will enable Cliffe FC to vastly improve their drainage system at Oxen Lane to secure future use of both the pitch for the football club, and the field for the community as a whole.

Up to £750,000 was made available by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England to rebuild and repair grassroots football pitches and facilities that suffered storm damage and flooding, to enable football to continue across the affected regions as quickly as possible. This Emergency Fund was available for grassroots football clubs across all levels of The FA National League System (Step 1 to Step 7) that required assistance to make facilities safe and fit for purpose again.

Malcolm Bryce, Cliffe FC secretary, said: “We are delighted to receive a grant from the Emergency Football Relief Fund. It’s been tough seeing the field in a sorry state it was in last season, and I’m glad the hard work from both the football club committee and Cliffe Playing Field Association can continue due to this grant award.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations should go to Cliffe FC for securing this Emergency Football Relief Fund grant.

“Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded 155 grants worth nearly £10m across East Riding, towards grassroots sports projects worth over £44m, with money generously provided by our funders: the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England.”

Saturday 22nd October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 3-0
FT: Harrison Signs 5 – 0 Cliffe FC

Again, it was a Saturday afternoon for the First Team with little to report, losing to the same score line as last weekend, 5-0. Harrison Signs had a 3-0 HT lead, and with Cliffe reduced to 10-men after Tom Grundy was shown red for a retaliation to a reckless challenge, mountain to climb for Cliffe once again. Cliffe did improve after being a man down, but the extra man took its toll as Signs scored twice more for 5-0. Harrison Signs finished with 10-men also after one of their subs raised their hands to Callum Ransome’s face, 5-0 FT. Ally Harris was named MOTM for a number of super saves once more, but again youngster Matty Holmes was the most impressive outfield player in a Cliffe shirt.

Next Saturday is a must win game for Cliffe FC, as the bottom two in Division 1 face off – Cliffe FC vs. Heslington.

—

Saturday 22nd October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Reserve C
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 2 – 4 Civil Service Reserves

Cliffe FC Reserves responded well from their drubbing last week, a 4-2 home defeat was the result – Cliffe unlucky to lose, a couple silly mistakes and Cliffe rueing missed chances themselves. Cliffe goals came from and own goal, and Glynn Richardson following up a saved penalty kick. MOTM was Liam Tomlinson. Again, some good football played by Cliffe’s young Reserves side, and hopefully the result will follow soon. Next week it’s Poppleton United away.

York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
HT: 1-1
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 2 – 4 NUR

A much improved performance from the Cliffe Sunday side, and as per the Reserves, it was a case of rueing missed chances when on top that ultimately saw the result swing the way of the away side. Cliffe could have been 4 or 5 goals ahead before the first goal of the game went the way of NUR, Andy Edwards denied a few times, and Callum Ransome hitting the woodwork before NUR worked an opening and scored from close range, 0-1. Man-of-the-match Kev Taylor forced the equaliser before HT, dribbling past a number of player before his fired-in cross was converted by an NUR defender for an OG, 1-1 HT.
NUR went ahead once more from a sweetly hit freekick before Nathan Parker equalised for Cliffe. But as Cliffe looked to get ahead, as Tom Collins had a goal disallowed for offside, however a penalty kick was given to NUR and scored for 2-3, and late on NUR scored their forth squeezing a shot in at the near post for 2-4 FT.

Next Sunday it’s FA Cup competition, and fellow Selby club, Hounds FC are the opponents.

Saturday 15th October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 3-0
FT: York St John University 5 – 0 Cliffe FC

Saturday’s First Team defeat against York St John University on the 3G pitch, another bump in the road to rebuild, St John’s had a 3-0 lead at the break – their main man Matt Thompson scoring a first half hat-trick – two goals were added after half-time to complete a 5-0 scoreline. From a Cliffe perspective, not much to report in a poor away day – Matty Holmes performed well when asked to step into centre-back position, and once again the busiest man on the pitch in the shape of skipper Ally Harris was awarded man-of-the-match, pulling off an impressive set of saves during the match – Holmes pushing Harris close to the MOTM award.

Malcolm Bryce, with the help of his committee and senior players, will continue to work hard to rebuild Cliffe’s first team, and will continue to actively search for some experience and quality to add-in to go with the development potential of the current squad – a much sought after commodity in local football. Next weekend it’s the in-form Harrison Signs away, no easy games in Division 1.

—

Sunday 15th October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Reserve C
HT: 9-0
FT: York RI Reserves 10 – 1 Cliffe FC Reserves

A heavy defeat handed out to Cliffe FC Reserves, with late dropouts and no recognised goalkeeper making Cliffe suffer with a bare 11. Whilst the scoreline read 9-0 at the break, Cliffe rallied second half, Kieran Gallagher scoring what would be Cliffe FC’s only goal of the weekend, as Reserves drew the second half 1-1, the final scoreline reading 10-1. Sam Easthill earn man-of-the-match, playing the second half in net.

Next weekend, Cliffe FC Reserves are at home to Civil Service Reserves – an opportunity to get going again.

—

Sunday 16th October 2016
York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
FT: York Nomads 15 – 0 Cliffe FC Sunday

Life in the top division on a Sunday morning is tough, and a heavy defeat to last season’s title contenders York Nomads was handed out on a wet and rainy morning. Nomads opened scoring on the quarter hour mark, as Cliffe competed well enough to make a game of it – the referee then reduced Cliffe to 10-men with two quick (and avoidable) yellow cards to kill any chance of Cliffe staying competitive in the match, which then saw Nomads run riot. Ally Harris on-form once more in between the sticks, pulling off saves another keeper wouldn’t even attempt to make, never mind actually save – Nomads ‘keeper, a virtual spectator, becoming a fan of Harris’ saves. Harris was MOTM, but the in-form Andy Edwards tireless effort and endeavour ran him close.

Goole-based NUR visit Oxen Lane, as Cliffe FC Sundays must pick themselves up to go again next weekend.

Tough weekend for Cliffe FC, after leading 1-0 and 1-1 at half-time, a red card leads to familiar faces running riot at Oxen Lane as title-favourites Thorpe United hand out 10-1 drubbing. Sundays spirited performance isn’t enough as Marcia Bishopthorpe win 4-2.

Saturday 8th October 2016
York Minster Engineering League – Division One
HT: 1-1
FT: Cliffe FC 1 – 10 Thorpe United

A quartet of moments around half-time saw the game swing from Cliffe leading to Thorpe dominating the scoreline. Cliffe had the lead on the five minute mark, Andy Addison dragged down in the area, Dan Collins stepped up and put the ball neatly in the bottom corner, 1-0. For the remaining 39 minutes, Cliffe frustrated Thorpe as they managed the game superbly, but Thorpe had their breakthrough on the 45th minute, a free-kick from the right headed in at the near post by former Cliffe captain, Luke Crowther for 1-1 at HT. That goal sending in Cliffe downbeat at the break, whilst lifting up the away side.

With the goal the first telling moment, and Phil Newstead – who was a certain shoo-in for man-of-the-match – had to leave at half-time was the second. Thorpe had the lead early in the second half, last season’s Sunday team talisman Aidy Wood heading in for the team in red, 1-2. Chris Coxon hit a deflected shot past Ally Harris to make it 3-1, but the game wasn’t beyond Cliffe at this point – not until the third moment going against Cliffe, Addison harshly shown a second yellow for a foul in the middle of the pitch and Cliffe now down to 10-men – which clearly affected the course of the game, followed by the forth blow – centre-back Joe Dack leaving the field due to injury. From this point Thorpe ran riot as Cliffe struggled to adjust, Wood lifting his tally to five, and for all the hard work to stop him, Nathan Parker (in the red of Thorpe) scored twice also – a few unnecessary flash points of aggression happened before the end of the match – the scoreline finishing 10-1 to certain title contenders Thorpe United. A humbling defeat, which sends Thorpe to the top of Division 1 and Cliffe to the foot of the table, with games in hand however. MOTM: Elliot Clark.

Saturday’s match-ball sponsors were NFU Mutual Selby, and Nigel Adams MP.

—

Sunday 9th October 2016
York Sunday Morning League – Division 1
HT: 2-1
FT: Marcia Bishopthorpe 4 – 2 Cliffe FC Sunday

Sunday was a much closer game, which it typical when Cliffe and Marcia Bishopthorpe meet. Cliffe FC Sunday making the trip to York College.

Cliche dropouts, typical of Sunday morning football, saw Cliffe reduced to a 12-man squad but regardless the performance the spirit and attitude applied was superb.
Marcia had an early 2-goal lead, but Tom Collins reduced the deficit before the break. Scott Birch made a superb save from a penalty that would have made it 3-1 before HT – Birch diving the wrong way but able to kick the ball clear.

Cliffe worked hard for their equaliser, and some good linkup between Tom Collins and Dan Richardson, saw Richardson side foot bicycle kick the ball into the bottom corner for 2-2. Cliffe were firmly on top midway through the second half, but a sucker punch of a goal for 3-2, and then surely Marcia’s goal of the season – a high arc’ed volley from the right wing that hit the far top corner, bar and in for 4-2 took the wind out of Cliffe’s sails and killed the game. FT 4-2.
Callum Ransome earned deserved man-of-match award.
