This match pitted league champions against each other with Hemingbrough newly crowned York League Division 2 champions and Cliffe FC crowned East Riding County League Division 3 champions last Saturday.
On paper this game looked like a great tie, and it did not disappoint, as both teams competed well through-out. Most of the early clear-cut chances fell to Hemingbrough and were duly wasted. Cliffe had a few half-chances coming from set-pieces. With no punches pulled on the tackle front, many big challenges were thrown about from both teams with Cliffe’s Ian Beckram on the wrong end of many as he’s had to deal with through-out his Cliffe FC stint. It would be one of these challenges that would lead to the opening goal, as Andy Moughan was adjudged to have fouled the quick ‘Boro forward in the area and the linesman awarded the penalty which was converted to put Boro into the lead that remained until half-time.

Cliffe continued to compete and Scott Birch and Andy Moughan neutralised any Boro threat with fullbacks Luke Crowther and Kev Simpson afforded the space to go forward. Kev Taylor continued to burst forward down the right-wing and the centre-midfielder Andy Addison battled hard. The home side began to apply more pressure and it paid off when Addison smashed the ball into the net to level things with plenty of time for the match to be decided. Momentum was with Cliffe as they came forward, but Boro were always a threat with their very quick counter attacks. As time ticked on chances came and went for both teams with Luke Crowther coming close from a freekick, as did Boro. Tom Hogg had a great chance to decide thing late on but put the ball wide of the mark. The whistle blew for 90 minutes but was not the end of the action.

Confusion broke out as both teams were unable to agree on how to decide the game. Originally the game was organised as to be decided by penalty shoot-out if the score was level @ 90 minutes. With players from both sides wanting a penalty shoot-out including Cliffe ‘keeper, Carl Blundell, and players and officials from Hemingbrough wanting to call it a draw, claiming that they knew not of the penalty shoot-out eventuality plan, a draw was decided and the Trophy was shared.

Archie’s widow, Joan, had agreed to present the trophy prior and together with a nice speech saying “She really enjoyed the game” and “Archie would of enjoyed it too” she presented both captains with the trophy.

Cliffe FC pegged Plexus back from the first whistle and were unlucky not to open the scoring when both Scott Birch and Andy Addison came close with Addison rattling the bar and hitting the inside of the post with two great efforts. Football being the sport it is saw the away side take the lead when a lapse of concentration saw Plexus score when a corner-ball was met by the head of the away side captain. With all of Cliffe’s dominance up to this point to go 1-nil down put all title hope in jeopardy but the home side responded immediately and Baz Summers finished a chance inside the box before half-time.

With the score at 1-1, it would not be enough and if it remained that until the final whistle it would see Cliffe finish in second place. This would not be a problem when a ball that broke in the area for Kev Taylor to pop up and absolutely crash the ball into the net to put Cliffe 2-1 ahead with all the Cliffe players and spectators emphatically celebrating Taylor’s goal. Not forgetting though, before Cliffe went 2-1 ahead, Addison hit the bar again, and the keeper saved his shot with the back of his head! 2-1 would become 3-1 when substitute Alan Jackson scored, Jackson would make it 4-1 and the title was on it’s way to Cliffe FC. Plexus did not keel over and they scored a second making it 4-2. With great link up play from Tom Hogg and Alan Jackson, Hogg had numerous attempts on goal and frustratingly didn’t score. Hogg did score, driving into the six yard box to hammer the ball home. Hogg would have his second and Cliffe’s sixth when he headed the ball home.
The final whistle blew and Cliffe FC were crowned East Riding County League Division 3 champions.

Head Coach, Bob Wilkinson, said “A thoroughly deserved win to take league title, the boys have worked extremely hard all season in training. They knew their roles and affected the play, at times they have played beyond their league status and as head coach I can ask for no more” - Bob Wilkinson is currently working towards his UEFA ‘A’ Licence coaching qualification

This win delighted everyone involved with Cliffe FC as only three short weeks ago, their promotion hopes looked in jeopardy. Keith Tiplady (1stXI Manager) and Bob Wilkinson (Head Coach) were very pleased with clinching the league title as were all the Cliffe FC players.

In arguably Cliffe FC’s most important game of the season, Total Sign Solutions travelled to face Cliffe in a 2nd vs. 3rd fixture.
Cliffe FC handed out a 5-2 defeat to Total Signs and with the win sees Cliffe FC seal promotion from the East Riding County League division 3, and with this keep alive the possibility of the league title
Malcolm Bryce writes…

The Cliffe players from the moment they arrived at Oxen Lane knew the significance of the game, a loss would put all promotion hopes in jeopardy. With game-faces on Cliffe began brightly and took it straight to Signs. With this Cliffe took the lead within the first 20 minutes when the returning Shane Cawkill smashed the ball past the Signs ‘keeper to put the home side 1-nil up. Signs looked bright coming forward but many attack was broken down by Andy Addison and Cliffe’s forward play filtered threw both Addison and Craig Allen in the centre of midfield. Cliffe’s lead doubled when, during his first appearance of the season, Alan Jackson put the ball into the net for 2-nil. Allen and Scott Birch also came close during the half for Cliffe, and the score read 2-0 Cliffe at half-time.

The second half would see five goals scored and Cliffe got the first of the half when Jackson set Baz Summers up to score, his first since early March, to put Cliffe 3-nil ahead. Summers had his second, and Cliffe’s forth, which he celebrated with delight. With a 4-0 lead, Cliffe looked as if they rested on their laurels and looked comfortable, but Signs then scored two quick goals in succession, the second a long-range lob over Ally Harris, to make the score 4-2 with over 15 minutes left and in all honesty a few, including Manager Keith Tiplady, must of felt slightly anxious of a Signs comeback. This was not to be as Cliffe once again took control of the game and looked likely to score more and, make-shift forward, Kev Simpson broke through on goal to score the final goal of the game to seal a 5-2 win for Cliffe FC.

This win see Cliffe FC seal promotion from the ERCL Division Three and keeps their title hopes alive. Ironically the team Cliffe beat, Total Signs play league leaders Hedon Rangers Reserves on Tuesday evening, and Cliffe will want Signs to take points off Hedon and a win for Signs will put things back into Cliffe FC’s hands.

After Thursday evening’s Semi-Final loss still fresh in their minds, Cliffe FC travelled to face another Hedon side in the shape of 2nd placed Hedon Rangers Reserves. Cliffe sat top of the table a point clear going into the game but came away two points behind Hedon after a 2-1 loss.

Cliffe began the game in a 4-1-4-1 formation looking to catch Hedon on the break after the home side inevitably would attack. The Cliffe players on the field did not need reminding the vital importance of this game but when Hedon went 1-0 up you wouldn’t think so because as soon as it was 1-0, Hedon soon had a second goal and Cliffe had it all to do and really had to attach some urgency to their play. With rally calls within the Cliffe ranks the away side switched to 4-4-2 before half-time.

With the seemingly more often than not during this half of the season, Cliffe lacked fight and a passion to go out and win the game. The second half would see Cliffe try and change this and many of the players stepped up and started to put all their effort in. Tom Hogg and Baz Summers defended from the front and when Hogg crossed for Summers only for the ‘keeper to save the shot, Cliffe looked brighter. With the introduction of Ben Rawson, Cliffe switched to 4-3-3. Andy Addison and Tom Hogg continued to work their socks off for the cause. Rawson had a gilt-edge chance to score only for the ‘keeper to save, Hogg also had a chance before Cliffe finally scored from a corner when David Evans headed the ball on for Rawson to score. With a quarter of the game left Cliffe had to go for it and now a draw would be as important as a win in the title race. The away side’s second goal didn’t come and Hedon win the 3 points thus leapfrogging Cliffe into 1st position two points clear.

This game was a tale of two halves and a tale of two different Cliffe sides. The first half saw a spirit-less Cliffe side who only respond when they were 2 goals down and the second half saw a Cliffe side dominate Hedon having them pinned back for the whole half and could of won the game with their chances. Fact of the matter is that this passion-less theme may see Cliffe FC’s whole season unravel. Cliffe can still win the title but is it now out of their hands and they and I have to hope Hedon drop points somewhere.

Cliffe FC’s next fixture is at home to Total Signs Solutions who sit in third position, a point behind Cliffe.

Contested at a neutral venue in Willerby, Cliffe FC faced Hedon United in the Semi-Final of the League Junior Cup. On the wet Thursday evening Cliffe FC whilst taking the lead only for Hedon to equalise and the score remaining 1-1 until full-time, Cliffe lost on penalties 5-3 and exit their second cup competition this season via the penalty shoot-out.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Things could have been different as Cliffe started brightly and soon took the lead when Ben Rawson found the net from inside the area to put the lower division side 1-nil ahead. Cliffe should of pushed on from this but Hedon looked bright and their front-two looked dangerous every time they had the ball and given space and time. Tom Hogg had a chance for Cliffe but narrowly put the ball wide. The division two side had their equaliser from a free-kick just outside the box that was lashed past, ‘keeper, Ally Harris to put the teams level 1-1 at half-time.

At times during the second half the game looked stretched but every time either of the Hedon front-two had the ball they look like they could score. Cliffe’s threat to the Hedon defence did not die but no clear chances were created to test the Hedon ‘keeper. Andy Addison in the middle of the Cliffe midfield covered every blade of grass and Andy Kirkham also worked hard. Hedon looked and sounded as if they wanted it more and Cliffe had little answer and were very quiet vocally. Hedon had the chance to go 2-1 ahead late on when Jamie Hawksworth handled the ball in the box. Ally Harris dug out a brilliant save to his left to tip the ball onto the post and clear the ball away. Cliffe created when Tom Hogg was switched up-front and with the introduction of Luke Worrillow, he looked like he could of won it when he went on a great run to beat two men but fell at the third of many hurdles. Baz Summers had a great goal-scoring chance denied by the Hedon ‘keeper after his glanced header. With the 90 minutes up the game went straight to penalties.
Hedon scored all 5 of their penalties whilst Cliffe missed two meaning Hedon United won 5-3 on penalties and progress to the final.

With Hedon Rangers Reserves winning the other Semi-Final on the adjacent pitch it creates an all Hedon Cup Final. But, with this loss it denies Cliffe FC a day out in Bridlington missing out on penalties as they did earlier on this season losing on penalties to Hutton Cranswick.

Manager, Keith Tiplady, said “A lapse of concentration lead to their goal and let Hedon back into the game We’ve struggled to absorb our current injury list and just didn’t perform on the night.”

As this is written on Friday – Cliffe FC travel to face the other finalists, Hedon Rangers Reserves, in league competition tomorrow afternoon. Cliffe FC now will concentrate on the league and tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) fixture pits 1st vs. 2nd with Hedon a point behind Cliffe FC

On a horrible, wet and dark Tuesday evening, Cliffe FC travelled to face Skirlaugh. With a hard fought 4-1 win which featured a penalty for either side and three Cliffe injuries, the 3-points see Cliffe FC return to the top of the East Riding County League Division 3 table.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

The game’s first 20 minutes saw both teams stretched and combined with Skirlaugh’s tiny pitch the match was very end-to-end but it would be the title-chasers that would take the lead when Cliffe were awarded a penalty for hand-ball. David Evans stepped up and smashed the ball home for his first Cliffe goal of the season. Skirlaugh had the chance to go level, also from the spot, when Andy Moughan was adjudged to have tripped the forward. Cliffe ‘keeper, Carl Blundell made a great save to his right, only for the home forward to get to the rebound first to draw Skirlaugh level at 1-1. Things for Cliffe could of gone very bad, and in terms of injuries did, when winger Dave Heron dislocated his shoulder and Andy Moughan damaged his groin. Ben Rawson managed to hit the post and score an offside goal before the away side did go 2-1 ahead before half-time when Aaron Tiplady scored inside the area.

Second-half saw Cliffe being told by manager, Keith Tiplady, “to be men” and come away with the three points to place Cliffe FC back top of the table and his side did indeed respond with Cliffe going 3-1 ahead when Rawson got his deserved goal. Andy Addison, in the middle of the park, ran the midfield from box-to-box and the Skirlaugh players couldn’t deal with him. Another Cliffe injury was suffered when Aaron Tiplady’s hamstring injury that has plagued him returned and he too had to leave the field of play. Wingers Kev Taylor and Tom Hogg had the Skirlaugh full-backs pegged back and Hogg would set up Cliffe’s forth when he squared the ball for Rawson to bag his second. Andy Kirkham was unlucky not to put Cliffe’s fifth goal in and the final-score was confirmed as 4-1.

This was a great, hard-fought, win for Cliffe FC and sees them return to the top of the Division Three table after Hedon Rangers and Total Signs dropped points at the weekend. With the obvious injury worries from the game which see both winger, Dave Heron and forward, Aaron Tiplady ruled out for the rest of the season combined with, centre-half Andy Moughan coming off early with a groin injury, Thursday’s Cup Semi-Final against Hedon United contains many selection worries for Keith Tiplady.

Cliffe FC bounced back from last Saturday’s home defeat by winning away from home beating Shiptonthorpe 5 goals to nil and featured a Dave Heron hat-trick.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

For the first fifteen minutes, Shiptonthorpe competed well with Cliffe considering that the home side sit at the foot of the table that is until Cliffe settled and when Dave Heron flighted a corner ball directly into the net Cliffe began to show the type of football they can play. With some lovely link up play by Aaron Tiplady and Ben Rawson, Rawson set Heron up to volley the ball into the net from 25 yards to put Cliffe into a 2-nil lead. With dominance shown by central-midfield pairing Andy’s Kirkham and Addison through-out the half, the only Cliffe worry was that of the cut suffered by David Evans on a delicate area within his shorts after been studded. :-S
Cliffe lead 2-0 at half-time.

Second half saw Cliffe continue to be the better side and after some superb hold-up play by Aaron Tiplady, Andy Addison crossed the ball for Heron to head the ball into the net for his and Cliffe’s third goal. Kev Taylor was a thorn in the Shiptonthorpe’s side as he continued to pressure their defence. Cliffe had a forth when substitute Aaron Lees was felled in the box and it was Lees who stepped up to place the ball into the net for his first goal for the Cliffe FC 1st XI. Heron continued to push for his “Arshavin forth” but was denied. With a brace of Taylor misses, Cliffe had an opportunity to get a fifth again from the spot when the ball was handled in the box. Centre-half, Andy Moughan, stepped up and emphatically smashed the ball onto the bar from 12 yards and he still seeks his first competitive Cliffe FC goal. (The crossbar is probably still shaking now!) Cliffe did have a fifth when Tom Hogg pressured two defenders and poked the ball home to put Cliffe 5-0 ahead shortly before the full-time whistle.

With this nice 5-0 win, the ERCL Division Three title is still firmly in sight with only Total Signs and Hedon Rangers sitting above them who still have to play each other and Cliffe.
Hornsea Town Reserves travel to Oxen Lane this Saturday to face Cliffe FC.

As Tuesday’s game surrounded itself with controversy, Cliffe FC once again played hosts to North Cave Reserves in the third round of the H.E Dean Cup. Tuesday’s null-and-void 1-1 draw saw Cliffe equalising with 9 men, this was not bettered or equalled as Cliffe played with 11-men for 90-minutes however it was North Cave who progress to play in the forth round after another match saw Cliffe become masters of their own downfall, this time in the shape of a 2-0 loss.

Cliffe FC’s first half performance was good and the home side competed well against a side two divisions above them, and with some great set-piece deliveries Cliffe looked like they could score. Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris had little to do and Ian Beckram and Andy Addison were playing well in the middle-of-the-park. The home side continued to play well but were only able to create slight chances in the shape of saved shots from Baz Summers and Dave Heron. With the score goalless half-time arrived.

An upbeat half-time team talk had Cliffe come out to win the cup tie but things did not goto plan when after Cliffe took the kick-off, North Cave managed to find themselves scoring within seconds of the re-start and Cliffe found themselves 1-0 down. Anyone would of expected Cliffe to respond to this and, the answer to did they respond to going a goal down? “Sort of” - Cliffe ’sort of’ responded to going behind but in reality no body really looked like wanting the get Cliffe back into the game and soon North Cave, with some nice play from their captain combined with a nice finish, took a 2-0 lead. Even two goals behind, Cliffe showed little or no fight, Ian Beckram tried a few individual runs to grab the game by the scruff of its neck but was kicked for his troubles, set-pieces dwindled into easy catches for the North Cave ‘keeper and the whole Cliffe side looked resigned to the fact they had lost the game. The final-whitle sounded and North Cave Reserves progress to play in the 4th Round of the H.E Dean Cup this coming Tuesday.

North Cave deserved their win but it was Cliffe who once again self-destructed, as they did against Total Signs earlier this season, Cliffe did play some nice football at times but were unable to show any fight after going a goal down. They showed a lot more fight in the original match on Tuesday when they went down to 9-men in controversial circumstances and were unlucky to lose on penalties so it may have been expected that they may want to go out and prove that they could win but it just didn’t show in their disappointing second-half performance.

Cliffe Team:
Harris, Simpson, Heron, Birch, Crowther, Addison, Beckram (Kirkham), Cawkill (A. Tiplady), Taylor (Rawson), B. Summers, Hogg

Things began even for both sides and Cliffe came closest first when Baz Summers hit the inside of the post direct from a corner. This did not signal Cliffe to go on and take the lead when North Cave won a penalty and converted it as this would signal this cup tie to become rather controversial. With substitute, Paul Fenton, on the sidelines, as a named sub, he vented his frustration verbally about the referee’s decision and soon the official decided it was time to give Fenton his marching orders and gave him a red card. This was not the end of the incident, with Fenton seeing red the referee asked Cliffe manager, Keith Tiplady, to remove a player from the Cliffe XI that were on the field. With confusion from both camps Tiplady’s hand was forced and he reluctantly chose Jamie Hawksworth, as the junior member in the back four, to leave the playing field.

To sum up: Paul Fenton, as a sidelined substitute, was red carded and asked to leave the playing area. But, the referee also required that Cliffe FC Manager, Keith Tiplady, had to also remove a player from his playing XI from the field of play “to make up” for this red card.

So, with Cliffe now down to 10 men and only two available subs, the game continued until half time with the score 1-0 to North Cave.

Second half, the extra North Cave man did not show and Cliffe continued to compete and with the 3-man defence of Dave Heron, Scott Birch, Andy Moughan and ‘keeper Carl Blundell, Cave didn’t look like scoring. The only Cave threat came when Carl Blundell was adjudged to have handled outside the area, Blundell received his “Birthday Yellow Card” and Cave hit the free-kick high and wide of the mark. Cliffe pushed to get the eqaliser with Moughan going on attacking runs from defence, Andy Addison working hard in the middle of midfield with Andy Kirkham. Cliffe defended from the front with Tom Hogg and Baz Summers closing down at every chance. This hustle from Cliffe began to turn to frustration when decisions didn’t go their way and with this the home side found themselves down to 9 men when Andy Moughan was sent-off. With rally cries from both Cliffe players on the field and Cliffe spectators the home side had to go for it and this paid off when, substitute, Ben Rawson’s looping header found it’s way into the net to put Cliffe level.
With the full-time score at 1-1, the match went straight to penalties.

With Carl Blundell saving one North Cave penalty out of five was not enough as Cliffe missed one and had one saved.
North Cave win 4 – 3 on penalties.
