A tale of two halves saw Cliffe FC play an awful first half but manage to turn around a 1-0 deficit to win the LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup Plate Final to earn some pre-season silverware

A forgettable first half for Cliffe FC saw Wheldrake attack well using route-one long-ball tactics leading to Cliffe’s Kev Simpson giving away a penalty that hit the bar and at 0-0 Cliffe hit the post before Wheldrake took the lead with a header before the break.

The second half was a different story with Cliffe dominating, first by equalising from a Luke Crowther shot that went in the the roof of the net before Ben Rawson bundled a goal in to make it 2-1 and, as Cliffe ‘keeper Ally Harris was a virtual spectator this half, things were sealed for Cliffe FC when Christopher Jackson smashed the ball past the Wheldrake ‘keeper the see the Selby Cup consolation prize go to Cliffe FC.

A nice victory for Cliffe to lift the secondary prize in this pre-season competition, beating a team they will be playing in League fixtures this coming season. The match was definitely a game of two halves and if Cliffe perform like they did against Bubwith in the Semi-Final and the second half of the Final then things look good on the silverware front for the coming 2010/2011 season.

LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup Final
Thorpe United 2 – 5 Selby Olympia (AET)

The “Wileman show” saw the LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup go to Selby Olympia with an extra-time win over Thorpe United as Eddie and Johnathan Wileman score 4 of Olympia’s 5 goals in the final. Thorpe took the lead before Olympia came back to make it 2-1 and with a late goal from Thorpe’s Ben Yorke, the game went into extra-time. The additional 30 minutes proved too far for the Thorpe side as Olympia went on to score three more goals with Jonathan Wileman and his brother Eddie getting their second goals of the game in the extra-time period.

A new Cliffe FC record was set in a 12-2 drubbing of Bubwith which saw two Cliffe hat-tricks and a place in the LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup Plate Final on Bank Holiday Monday

Cliffe started the game at a fast pace and had Bubwith reeling from kick-off but the visitors took the lead against the run of play when Jamie Hawksworth, possibly feeling sorry for the visitors poor start, put the ball into his own net. Cliffe were level soon enough when Ben Rawson scored before Tom Hogg made it 2-1 to Cliffe. A Luke Crowther brace, one screamer and a penalty, made it 4-1 and Hogg managed a second before half-time at 5-1.

Cliffe didn’t let up the onslaught after the break and Hogg had his hat-trick for 6-1 and the seventh Cliffe goal saw Crowther grab his hat-trick. Kev Taylor is credited with Cliffe’s eighth goal and after numerous dazzling runs Shane Cawkill made it 9-1 before Sim Leach, who was Cliffe’s acting player/manager, smashed the ball into the net to break double-figures. Bubwith didn’t just lie down and made it 10-2 with a nicely slotted goal. Cliffe midfield trio of Crowther, new signings Sean Bugg and Shaun Smith looked very good and the latter two had chances to get their first Cliffe goals but it Christopher Jackson off the bench made it 11-2, to the dismay of the Bubwith players and level Cliffe’s goalscoring record. Luke Crowther got the record-breaker and his forth to finish Bubwith and see Cliffe in to the Selby Cup Plate Final with a 12-2 win.

Cliffe play Wheldrake on Bank Holiday Monday at Thorpe United’s ground in the LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup Plate final before Selby Olympia take on Thorpe United in the LIVE4SOCCER Selby Cup Final proper kicking off at 1pm and 3pm respectively.

Cliffe FC’s U21s maiden game ends in defeat against a very capable Hedon Rangers team in their opening fixture of ERCFA U21s Pilot League at Bishop Burton College.

From the first kick, Hedon’s pace was a problem for Cliffe’ back four and the opening goal was a special one, beating Jamie Hawksworth from outside the area into the top corner for 1-0 to Hedon. Cliffe did compete well but Tom Hogg and Christopher Jackson up top had only scraps to work with. Hogg had to make do with a half-chance before half-time. Andy Edwards and Shane Cawkill also worked hard down Cliffe’s left wing.

After half-time, Cliffe looked better in all areas of the pitch but the three in the middle of midfield for Hedon ran Sean Bugg and Dan Collins ragged. After Cliffe gave away possession Hedon took advantage and doubled their lead before making it 3-0 shortly after. Despite the scoreline, captain Luke Crowther and Nathan Horner did well against the Hedon front two but just couldn’t cope with the extra man dropping off. Cliffe had a guilt edge chance to score but Jackson’s shot was saved making the final score 0-3.

Cliffe FC U21s are back in action on Wednesday 1st September, again at Bishop Burton College, versus Bricknell Rangers and will be wanting to get a foothold on this league.

A game that would see Cliffe start slow and not play to their strengths sees Selby Railway register a pre-season win over Cliffe for the first time in three seasons

For the first 20 minutes, Cliffe didn’t seem at the races and even though they were understrength they had a good enough 11 out there to perform. Railway looked a capable side and attacked well down the right wing. Railway took the lead when Andy Addison was adjudged to of felled a Railway player and the resulting free-kick saw a looping header beat Jamie Hawksworth. 1-0 to the away side was the half-time score.

With only a goal in it, Cliffe had all to play for and did have a 15 minute spell of pressure on Railway, including a great run by Billy Atton, before a dagger was put into Cliffe’s chances of staying in the running for the Selby Cup proper when Railway doubled their lead after breaking down Cliffe’s left side. The home side got a goal back when John Knowles scored in-off-the-post for his first Cliffe goal to make it 2-1. Cliffe did have chances to equalise when Knowles narrowly missed a lob with Ben Rawson in free space, and Andy Addison wasted a one-on-one after his shot went wide. But the hard-working Railway side came away with a 2-1 win and progress to the next round whilst Cliffe now compete for the secondary ‘Plate’ prize.

In a pre-season fixture, in which the Archie McCartney trophy was also contested, Cliffe FC’s great team performance saw through hard-fought 2-0 win at Oxen Lane.

The first half saw Hemingbrough have many chances and may have being guilty of wasting them as Cliffe worked hard in defence and midfield and had a shot saved from Aaron Lees before half time.

The second half saw Cliffe look the better team as the score stayed 0-0 any chances that Hemingbrough brought Jamie Hawksworth into action the Cliffe ‘keeper looked very solid. Cliffe had the chance to open scoring when Christopher Jackson fluffed a chance but it would be ‘keeper Hawksworth that got the assist for the first goal when one of his mammoth kicks saw Jackson bravely head the ball into the net for 1-0. Jackson would have a hand in Cliffe’s second goal when he put Aaron Lees through for Lees to be fouled in the area and it would be Lees that scored the resulting penalty putting the game out of reach for Hemingbrough.

This was a great result for Cliffe Reserves as in the upcoming season they won’t face many teams as capable as this Hemingbrough side, who will be two divisions above them, and promotion is a real target for Cliffe’s 2ndXI.

A single goal separated both sides in a friendly which saw Cliffe FC hold their own against Premier Division’s Riccall United.

Riccall, as expected by many, began the better side and the visitors could of being guilty for trying to overplay the ball as they wasted a few half-chances. Cliffe rode the wave of Riccall pressure and Tom Hogg lead the home team’s line very well against the visitors’ defence. The game’s only goal came around the 35 minute mark when a corner wasn’t cleared properly and as the ball broke the visitors scored making the score 1-0 at half-time.

Second half, whilst the visitors had more of the ball, Cliffe looked very organised from defence to attack. Jamie Hawsworth had little to deal with in the Cliffe goal but did have to tip a shot onto the bar. Cliffe managed to strike the woodwork from a Tom Dunning effort and the home side had chances to make the game all-square when Tom Hogg has a shot tipped round the post and Chris Jackson managed to miss from a few yards out. 1-0 to the visitors was the final score in the very encouraging friendly for Cliffe FC.

From back to front, Cliffe FC’s whole team performance was great. Man-of-the-match, Tom Dunning working well with Kev Taylor, as Scott Birch and Kev Simpson organised the centre of the defence very well against the very capable Riccall front two as Luke Crowther sat in front of the defence to null the Riccall attack whilst still managing to venture forward.

Without getting carried away, whilst Riccall did win the game, this was a good run-out for Cliffe and without doubt the Oxen Lane club will not come up against many teams the same calibre as this Riccall side in the coming season and great team performance’s as shown in this friendly are very encouraging for the coming season.

Cliffe FC kicked off the Live4Soccer Selby Cup with an encouraging 5-0 win against visitors, Hensall Athletic.

The first 30 seconds looked as if Hensall may put some pressure on the home side but it wasn’t to be when Cliffe went into an early lead courtesy of an own goal after a Sean Bugg corner and Kev Taylor headed onto the bar before Ben Rawson neatly finished to double Cliffe’s lead. At 2-0 Cliffe seemingly let off the gas and Hensall had part of the possession combined with a set of half-chances before half-time. Cliffe did manage a few more chances before the break as Andy Kirkham hit the bar from a header.

After the break, Cliffe upped their game and the Hensall defence had little rest time between stoppages. Cliffe took a 3-0 lead when James Tweedie set Ben Rawson up for a tap-in. Three became four-nil when after many chances his way gone astray, James Tweedie finished off the hardest of the bunch, smashing the ball past the ‘keeper from a tight angle. After a nice ball from Andy Addison, Kev Taylor ghosted past the Hensall defence to score and make it a 5-0 win for Cliffe in ‘Group 2′ of the Selby Cup.

Cliffe FC 2ndXI Summary

Cliffe FC’s Reserves played their first pre-season fixture straight after the Hensall game in a friendly versus Huntington Rovers Reserves, a team a full three divisions above them, and with only 5 players playing from last season’s squad and new manager, Simon Davies at the helm, they played well and the resulting 3-1 loss came against a very strong visiting side and should not be thought a bad result. Aaron Tiplady grabbed the goal for Cliffe FC Reserves.

In the other Selby Cup fixture Hemingbrough United played out a 2-2 draw with Selby Olympia in Group 3. Cliffe Football Club began their pre-season friendlies on Saturday as they played hosts to Leeds side Collingham.

Cliffe opened scoring with a great goal by Ian Beckram as he took on at least 4 players before putting the ball past the ‘keeper. Tom Hogg doubled Cliffe’s lead with a nicely placed shot and Beckram made it 3-0 before half-time.

After multiple changes at half-time by Cliffe FC manager, Keith Tiplady, Collingham settled first and a nice goal made it 3-1 and the away side made it 3-2. Cliffe scored a forth goal courtesy of Christopher Jackson and at 4-2 it looked like Cliffe had the win but with two quick goals Collingham made it 4-4 at the final whistle in this high-scoring friendly.
