The world's leading economies are facing not just one but many crises. The financial meltdown may not be over, climate change threatens major global disruption, economic inequality has reached extremes not seen for a century, and government and business are widely distrusted. At the same time, many people regret the consumerism and social corrosion of modern life. What these crises have in common, Diane Coyle argues, is a reckless disregard for the future--especially in the way the economy is run. How can we achieve the financial growth we need today without sacrificing a decent future for our children, our societies, and our planet? How can we realize what Coyle calls "the Economics of Enough"?

The paper provides details on the OECD green growth strategy and focuses on what lessons the aid-for-trade community can learn from this work. The paper reviews the current literature on aid for trade and green growth as well as broader work on green growth and developing countries and the role of development co-operation. It provides an overview of the aid-for-trade flows that support environmental objectives with examples of particular projects. The paper highlights that environmental objectives have long been articulated in aid programmes and that although ODA is a relatively minor contributor to green growth, its role can be catalytic.

The Commissioner calls for a more sustainable growth model. Growth, as we know it, will lead to incomprehensible problems in the future, not least due to the stress we cause to our ecosystems, our climate, and other natural resources, like for example water.

Tumultuous economic conditions, regional security crises and consistent summit malaise challenged the worldě°Ë?€™s global governance mechanisms in 2011. As we enter a new year, the global community will face ongoing and new challenges that test how the world comes together to find and enact solutions. This week, we speak to CIGI experts David Runnalls, Eric Helleiner, Gregory Chin and Mark Sedra to hear their thoughts on what 2012 will bring in terms of environment and energy, and global economy, global development and global security challenges.

To achieve the goal of cutting emissions by over 80% by 2050, Europe's energy production will have to be almost carbon-free. How to achieve this without disrupting energy supplies and competitiveness is the question answered by the Energy Roadmap 2050 the Commission is presenting today. Based on the analysis of a set of scenarios, the document describes the consequences of a carbon free energy system and the policy framework needed. This should allow member states to make the required energy choices and create a stable business climate for private investment, especially until 2030.

The Kyoto climate treaty was kept alive after negotiators at a United Nations climate change conference brought the talks back from the brink of collapse with a compromise deal to work towards a new global pact to reduce carbon emissions. The nearly 200 nations at the Durban meeting agreed on Sunday that the new arrangement would be in place by 2015 and in force from 2020. Importantly, it is to include the world’s top emitters – China, the US and India.

World leaders must at some point make the decisions deferred in Durban. The political conditions for a deal may have improved in four years’ time. The sad thing is that the environmental conditions will not.

The European Union welcomes the agreement reached at the UN climate conference in Durban as a historic breakthrough in the fight against climate change. After two weeks of negotiations, the 195 Parties to the UN climate change convention agreed on a roadmap, proposed by the EU, for drawing up a legal framework by 2015 for climate action by all countries. The Durban conference also agreed that there will be a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, made operational the new Green Climate Fund for developing countries and approved a series of measures which build on the progress made at last year’s Cancun conference.
