By default the ability to download these apps, music or books to your iPhone or iPad are only available if that device is on a wireless network.  This is due to the size limit by which you can download an app but also the vast majority of iPhone or iPad users have to pay for data either monthly or per megabyte.  If you are however on a generous data plan or just absolutely need something downloaded to your iPhone or iPad, you can enable this feature to utilize your carrier’s data network.  The key to keep in mind is what I just outlined:  This will go against your monthly data limit on your account so if you have a small amount, use this tip sparingly.

To enable 3G support for Store downloads, go to Settings>Store on your iPhone or iPad.  Here is where you can adjust all of your automatic downloads.  The Use Cellular Data option is just below the Music, Apps and Books settings.  Slide this to On and your iPhone will start using 3G data for these downloads.

In addition, you can limit the type of downloads that are automatically performed on your iPhone using the Music, Apps and Book sliders.  If for example you only want to make sure books are downloaded, slide the Music and App settings to Off.  This can help save potentially data usage but also assures you get what you really want download immediately.

Do keep in mind that if you have an iPad that is WiFi only you will not see this option.  Likewise if you have an iPod Touch.

The most notable item on that list is likely the Adobe Flash Player changes.  This is in response to recent malware issues with Adobe Flash and OS X which should help curb it.

The update, as always, is free.  Just go to the Apple Menu then click Software Updates to download it.

I have spent a fair amount of time this morning digging around both the iPhone and iPad version of the Facebook app to see if there are any other changes that I may have missed.  So far, beyond the inline photos I’ve mentioned, I can’t find any other additional changes. If you have found a change do post a comment here so others (including me) can find it.

The cool thing in all of this is that Facebook made this change without requiring you to download a new version of the app itself from iTunes.  Pretty slick and the benefit of being essentially a website on the backend.  This isn’t the first time they have done this and surely won’t be the last.

That was the subject line of the first email in my inbox this morning.  It was one of several in there actually but was by far the best attention getter.

The short answer, by proof of this post, is yes, I’m still here.

The last update I made to AlliOSNews was way back on May 1st.  That’s right, 20 days ago.  In between that post and this one, I’ve traveled over 12,000 miles on multiple continents for what I affectionally refer to as “the day job”.  To say I’ve been busy is, well, an understatement.

Fortunately things are calming down – for the moment at least – and I should be able to post more regularly.  But I have to say a heart felt thank you to all of you who emailed to check in on me.  All is good.  All is well.  I’m advocating for a 28 hour day but that’s another discussion.
