<media:text>an overnight fire kills dozens of animals in their cages.now investigators are trying to figure out what caused it. logan gay talked with customers who just learned about the fire today. fire crews are calling what happened here at uncle bill's pet center a horrible tragedy.this was the scene last night at uncle bill's pet center.juan casella watched as fire fighters worked as fast as they could to gain access to an attack fire at uncle bill's pet center.juan casella/lives next to pet storei also saw a lot of smoke coming out of the roof. a lot of police and fire departments coming herebut what casella witnessed on the outside didn't compare to what fire crews saw on the inside. 100 animals trapped in their cages dead from smoke inhalation.of those animals 40 were dogs and 25 were parakeets, rabbits and other animals.the survivors included multiple reptiles, fish, a guinea pig and an office cat . it's dark in there.you can smell a burning smell in there theodore penn is a regular cusomer here at uncle bill's. he stopped by to pick up some live mice for his son's snake. he walked in the store not knowing crews were inside checking out the damage from the fire.he was shocked to find out the news.theodore penn/customerthat's really sad because this is the spot right here now he and many other customers like ashley justice will have to find other stores that can meet their pets needs. 3</media:text>

<media:text>make everyone run inside.... and our pets feel the same way! kq2's kilee thomas joins us with why local animal shelters say this extreme cold is dangerous for our animals. as temperatures drop below zero stuck out in the cold and neither do our furry friends volunteers across the area want to make sure pet owners understand how dangerous leaving your pets outside can be sub zero temperatures. sot: cara campbell, friends of the animal shelter- "the cold like this is very dangerous for pets. they're just like us. they can get hypothermic, they can get frostbite." sot: trina earl, doniphan county pet rescue- "puppies under six months like charlie here shouldn't even be out more than 10 minutes. they can't keep their temperatures up. the pads of their paws will get frostbite." the city of st joseph has a tethering ordinance prohibiting animals from being tethered between the hours of 10 pm - 6am. the ordinance also restricts pets from being tethered longer than 30 minutes without the proper food, water and shelter. and if you're looking for a furry friend to keep you warm this winter county pet rescue is looking for foster families.reporting in st thomas kq2 news (sot)</media:text>

<media:text>c1 3 b13 from the nasdaq marketsite in times square, i'm jane king with your morning business report. (((shelby intro))) across the country... shelters have seen their crates go empty... as more people adopt pets... during their extended time at home. whether taking in a new dog...or moving to a new house .... there are steps that you can take... to make it a little smoother, for you and your furry friend. here's this week's angie's list report. (((take package))) voiceover (:22) our pets make our houses feel like home. but to put it in terms that even they'll understand ... moving with a dog can be ruff. but angie hicks of angie's list... has suggestions that anyone can do. angie hicks, co-founder of angie's list if you have a move planned, include your pup in the process. keeping an up-beat attitude will make it a lot less stressful of an experience. show your pet that you're packing up their bed, their blanket, their favorite toys. all of this will make sure that you have a smooth transition. voiceover (:19) to prepare for your dog's arrival in the new space ... bring a few unwashed items ... like blankets or t-shirts... to place in rooms where your dog will spend most of their time. this will help transfer the scent of your old home... into your new one. and it will help your dog feel comfortable. but comfort is not the only thing to prepare for?safety is top of the list. angie hicks, co-founder of angie's list at your new home, pet-proof your house first before you bring your pet in. get down on their level and look around for any dangerous items. are there any poisons they might get into, or any dangerous sharp items? remove all of those so that your pet has a safe and happy environment. voiceover (:15) you should also check for small spaces... they could climb into and get stuck. eliminate potential hazards ... before your dog enters ... so they can safely explore. and to get things started on the right paw... give them the vip tour... of the new space. angie hicks, co-founder of angie's list once you have all of your pet's belongings settled into your new house, take your pet on a guided tour. put your dog on a leash and walk them to each room, let them get a sense for the space, the smell and get comfortable in their new surroundings. voiceover (:04) as you all begin to settle in... remember that consistency is key. angie hicks, co-founder of angie's list moving can be stressful for everyone and so it's important to keep to your normal routines with your pet after you move into your new home. if you have a certain time that you go on walks, do feedings or have playtime, keep to that schedule and your pet will be happier. (((shelby tag))) creating a home environment that's safe, familiar and</media:text>

<media:text>their lost dog (zee-nuh) zeynah. news 18's joe paul spoke with the couple and several people involved in the search. he joins us in studio tonight with more from those conversations. joe, how's (zee-nuh) zeynah doing? zeynah is doing well but she had a rough week. she went missing january 26th. she was finally found near a home in the columbian park area after nearly week in snow storms and bitter cold. and zeynah's owners say she wouldn't have survived without the community's overwhelming response. < nat pop (zee-nuh) zeynah is banged up but finally back home after escaping through a broken gate in her backyard. as they days went by, her owners, chalyse (weese) weiss- brinkman and corey mullins, felt more and more hopeless. "i was honestly grieving. i spent several days just crying and driving." the couple posted about zeynah on social media sites like facebook, reddit and nextdoor. katie smith even contacted them through craigslist. smith had seen a car hit zeynah near columbian park. "and i saw her kind of limping, kind of going offhe road ... i said to myself, i was like i'm not going to let this dog go. i'm going to make sure i find their owner." the posts exploded and spurred a community-wide search. mullins compiled all the sightings on a map showing zeynah's path across lafayette. "just knowing how she is. this is her right here. you wouldn't have ever thought she would have made it that far or that long." sean henady volunteered his drones and thermal cameras. he's helped families search for loved ones for the past 15 years. "this was above and beyond and quite exceptional as far as the response from the community. you usually don't have this type of response at all." lesley (daws) dause spent her nights, weekends and even lunch breaks looking for zeynah after spotting the dog near her apartment complex. "just wanted to make sure it got home. it was cold outside and worried about it and lots of prayers and lots of miles of just going a searching for it." animal control finally corralled zeynah, injured and exhausted, after nearly a week in the bitter cold. "we're so, so grateful to have her back and just the people. there's so many good people out there." veterinarians say they might have to amputate zeynah's paw due to nerve damage. but she seems to be getting around just fine. nat pop zeynah also has a fractured toe and abrasions on her face in addition to the nerve damage. but the good news is, during my visit, she seemed perfectly comfortable and happy to be home. joe paul, news 18. if you've never had a chance to enjoy local brewers and art at the same time</media:text>

<media:text>bleeding and yet to regain consciousness. > valentine's day 2021 may be one of the coldest days of the year, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it with our valentines date at home. for some that might be their treasured four legged family members. you can join them in their fundraiser called my fury valentine. for $40 a couple or $60 for family you can get dinner or dessert prepared and delivered. also enjoy music and a pet fashion show. they hope to raise a lot of money even though it has to be virtual. like i said we'll start off at 6:00 with a jazz band here at saint joe they are going to provide entertainment and we'll switch on and off to see some of the shelter pets and music and we'll probably last about an hour or so. if you would like to register the deadline is thursday.</media:text>

<media:text>c1 3 we've been telling you about ethan this week. he was left in front of the kentucky humane society in lousiville in terrible condition last friday. as abc 36's bobbi mcswine tells us...his signs of recovery have captured the nation's heart. l3: good morning kentucky! andrea blair kentucky humane society l3: good morning kentucky! white dog near death being nursed back to health kentucky humane society "we are just really hopeful that he makes it and everyday that he's with us is a miracle." andrea blair says ethan was dumped at the kentucky humane society friday...he was dying. "he is literally the thinnest dog that we've ever seen that was still breathing. he was actively dying when we picked him up and his temperature was so low that it was not even being read by the thermometer." blair says ethan only weighed about 40 pounds...less than half the weight a dog his size should be. she says he likely had not been fed for several weeks...but with a lot of love and care...he's making progress. "within a day we saw a tail wag. he was still too weak to hold up his head, but he was eating - very interested in eating." blair says as ethan's story spread...the center has received hundreds of calls from concerned animal lovers...and raised more than 40- thousand dollars. "it gives me a lot of hope that people really do care about animals and for every one person out there who mistreats an animal or neglects them, i know there are thousands who want to help and are willing to step up." bobbi mcswine...abc 36 news. ######## time is... we've got another</media:text>

<media:text>c1 3 helped an animal nonprofit save hundreds of cats and dogs... living in an overcrowded arkansas shelter. abc 36's alex king tells us how the animals are doing now...and when they'll be ready for adoption. in early january... the kentucky and lexington humane societies traveled alongside bissell pet foundation and 14 other shelters to helena, arkansas... they all worked together to move 240 dogs and 30 cats out of the humane society of delta. these are the faces of some of the 10 or so dogs the lexington shelter took in. ashley: "they're doing well. there are several that have heartworm so they'll be undergoing heartworm treatment in foster care for a few months and then we also have some puppies that we brought back." a couple of the puppies are fighting off parvo virus and a few others are suffering from mange. director of fundraising ashley hammond says the shelter is grateful for the opportunity to help smaller shelters. ashley: "because of the support we receive from our community, we are able to help animals and save more lives. not just in kentucky but everywhere." hammond says throughout the pandemic... the lexington humane society has not seen an increase in animals in its shelter... which gives it the opportunity to help others. ashley: "it is so rewarding to be able to pull animals from different areas where they might not have received a second chance, they might not have received a loving home. well we're going to give that to them." and you can help give that to them. the humane society says the puppies will be ready to adopt in a few months. alex king. nat sound: dog</media:text>

<media:text>leyla: this is quite a special pet of the week, and we're so glad to be joined by a special friend, kay heiman, and she has a very shy soul, fabian, and first of all, happy year-over-year, and tell us more about fabian. great to see you as well. and fabian is one of 15 dogs, they got their name from the bahamas, and it's like an endearing name for the kinds of dogs, and they all look very similar in size, because of course they're on an island and they all look quite similar. and we had 15 of them. and 11 of them have already found homes. they had no problems, a little bit shy, because they were street dogs. but there are four of them that are left that really really need extra loving care. leyla: that's what i understand, so they kind of need a special home and is that why they have lasted so long at the shelter? yes, it wants been really tough on them. just the surroundings and everything is so unfamiliar to them. they are used it living on the street. but they're really good with other dogs. so what we're hoping is because they were living in communal neighborhoods, and little packs, and we're hoping that there's someone out there that has another dog that's looking for a friend that has the time and patience to work with these guys, and of course you're going to need to keep them on a long training lead at all times, because they do get very scared very easily. leyla: oh, interesting, and mostly and people and swayings -- is that what they're most nervous about? they're not used to the hustle and bustle of our world, you know? and this one in particular, he's okay with being held and he seems to be looking around a little bit, and he really really needs -- he's still very fearful, very afraid. poor things, so he needs a special home. and they're out there. we have plenty of them in the low country, and i want to get to -- normally, we would be in the studio at this time, and when you have the annual pup bowl, that's one of our favorite times to host you and the puppies there because we turn our studio into a football field. it's so much fun, and the puppies at this year's pup bowl are all in foster care, so they're going to be going out to the event. but because of covid and because of restrictions of gathering, there are only going to be 200 pictures, and it's very specialized. the first people will be in little sections and you still need to go online and buy your ticket. it's $10 to come to the event. we'll also be live streaming on facebook, and we're hoping to have a big screen, so everyone who is not closeup can still see the exciting things that are going on at pup bowl. we're very excited about it, and this is our third year of doing it, and it's so much fun. leyla: i love it, and people love seeing the puppies out at the gridiron, and first of all, things will be limited and you are selling a limited number of tickets, but it's still an opportunity for people to get out there and have a good time. and of course the proceeds go to a good cause, the charleston animal society. and how are you doing with covid? y'all over there are quite organized. we have been doing okay. wdrb our bmw car raffle over the holidays, and we're going to do another one coming up this march and april. and i'm super excited about that. and we still have our rescue out there available for purchase, which has our rescue spokes dog, and actually the cat was mr. t. and the dog was pete. on the palmetto breweries beer. so we always need help when it comes to adoptions, we have 40 dogs looking for homes. and come visit. of course we're practicing social distancing, and people in the shelter at any given time. sounds good, so fabian, star, giselle, those are the remaining bam dogs that you want to find good loving homes for, and of course we're going to share that information and we want to wish you the best of luck. thank you, kay for joining us. thank you, and i miss you guys and mission being in the studio. and i can't thank you enough for everything that you do to help us civilized and rescues in the community. it's all you, thank you so much, kay. and back after this.</media:text>

<media:text>it's our first pet of the we can for 2021 and we wanted to invite to kick it off. they're in dire straits, and julie joins us with how we can help and how you can take this little sweet, darling, adorable puppy and have i left any adjectives out? perfect. and precious, which is her name. yes. jen: o' leyla: she's a doll. and first, before we get into the other stuff, tell us about this darling. precious is a chihuahua pomeranian mix, she was brought into the rescue, and she's the sweetest puppy ever. a teddy bear. she's soft and a lover, and she loves pets, other dogs, and she loves cats, she loves people. she loves children. she's a snuggler. sounds like a dream, the perfect dog. she needs a home. she needs a home, okay. and i'm sure that people watching this are knowing, i have to have her. there might even be a bidding war, and i think there is. because i want to talk about the rescue unique shelter in goose creek, and can you remind everybody how it got started and the story behind it? so this is a military veteran founded rescue founded over 50 years ago, and the story is, mary collins served, and while west was in vietnam, he was gifted a white german shepherd that ended up saving from a viet cong attack, and as a way to show his appreciation and gratitude to -- he named the pup harvey fiene, and basically, he brought him back to charleston to give him new life and show his gratitude, and hf is harvey fiene, and helping everyone love pets, and that was his way of giving back. he wanted to rescue and save and love as many pets as possible. and harvey fiene was his inspiration, and like i said, over 50 years, and it's a no kill rescue. leyla: half a century legacy, with right now, you're on the brink of closing down. so we're in dire need of our community to help us at this time. covid was very impactful. and we can't do any fundraisers, so the funds are not there. it takes over $7,000 a month to run the rescue, because we're a rescue that has our pets on-site. so there's a big farm, and we take very good care of them. and we have caretakers that take care of them 24-7, and it's $7,000 to run the rets cue in one month. leyla: what is the no kill rescue doing to get the word out? obviously, you're here on the show, and trying to help and bring out to the awareness that people really need to come to your aid of but is there anything else that you're doing just make that, to sound the alarm each louder? so after the new year, we have been kind of brainstorming ideas, and you know, we feel like going into into the community for small businesses, and maybe asking for help from them. and share our story and maybe even make a donation of proceeds, or something to that effect is what i was thinking. you know, with covid, we would love to do fundraisers, we would love to have minglerses with the community and we don't know if that's problem right now. but there's a lot of places that are pet lovers. and so we -- leyla: absolutely. reaching out to do an event. leyla: there's absolutely a way, and i know a lot of people are in a tough spot and they have been for months and months now, but i know there's someone out there who wants to either write a check or donate a couple of dollars, every by the counts, so we're going to put your information up on the screen for anybody who wants to donate to no kill rescue in goose creek, she's precious, and she's one of the dogs up for adoption. and you have other animals there as well that you care very well for, and so we're going to do everything that we can to keep you guys afloat and keep the legacy doing, and thank you so much for joining us.</media:text>
