<media:text>in the united states, 700 women die every year from labor and delivery complications. the leading cause of maternal death is excessive, unexpected bleeding. as martie salt shows us, a high-tech system can now alert doctors and nurses in real time if a woman is in danger. first-time mom, diana romano loves spending every moment possible with ten-month old leo. diana had a normal, healthy pregnancy, staying on the job as a doctor until right before leo was due. "when i went to my 39 week visit i was diagnosed with high blood pressure, so they decided to bring me in that night to be induced." (:09) diana had a smooth delivery with no complications. she said that's the expectation as most women go into the delivery room. "the majority of the time things go beautifully, but sometimes things can get scary." (:05) three percent of all women experience a dangerous hemorrhage during or after labor and delivery. it's not always easy to tell if a woman is in danger. "the traditional way of monitoring blood loss is done by visual inspection. meaning we essentially look at the saturated pads and the operative field and make an estimate with our best guess what the blood loss is." (:11) now a cutting edge system called the triton is taking the guess work out by using an app to analyze the amount of blood on surgical sponges and equipment. doctors or nurses calibrate the system using a barcode. then they hold up sponges and pads in front of the computer or i-pad camera. "it will take pictures of surgical sponges and canisters and measure how much hemoglobin is on them." (:08) the system tallies how much blood is lost. doctors decide in real time if a patient needs additional treatment or even a transfusion. it's a digital eye that doctor katz says helps even the most experienced obstetrician and their patients. i'm martie salt reporting.</media:text>

      <media:credit>WTHI</media:credit>
<media:text>heat like today... coaches are keeping a close eye on student athletes. they're watching for signs -- of heat exhaustion. many coaches are already... training to look for heat- related illnesses. but -- as c-b-s-4's "zach myers" reports... a new law will make that training a requirement in just a few weeks. ////////// "after more than 30-years of coaching tennis... dave hefferen has a good idea about when a player needs to come off the court to cool down. "two weeks ago, i had a young man who said he felt like he was going to faint, and i took him over in the shade and took him in the air conditioning." this player was taken inside after telling the coach she felt lightheaded. "if you start feeling bad at all, let me know because we have a nice air conditioned locker room." faintness or dizziness are some of the early warning signs of heat exhaustion. and after july first, indiana coaches will be required to learn how to spot those signs. like many coaches, hamilton southeasterns kory seitz took the certified course on heat preparedness, offered by the indiana high school athletic association. and he agrees with the new law requiring coaches to recertify every two years. "were not playing tough guy type camp thing today. if youre not feeling well we need to know about it, or if you need to bring a drink and you need to sit down." seitz says days like this require more water breaks, more time out of the sun... and some creatvity to keep young players cool. "'we have a hose thats usually running a lot to keep the kids cooled off. so we try to make it fun, theres a lot of water that flies around here at camp, even though its baseball and you try to avoid rain." both coaches say times have changed from the days when water breaks meant you werent tough enough. these days, its about being smart and making safety a top priority. "we know that if youre thirsty, youre already dehydrated. so you need to keep the fluids coming in." <media:text>no one likes the ides of having surgery, but thanks to new technology available at baptist golden triangle going &#225; under the knife&#225; can be less traumatic physically and psychologically. we find out more in tonight's health talk with baptist. segment 1: what is minimally invasive surgery? trt: 1:50 hi. i'm dr. brad beckham, general surgeon and part of the surgery team at baptist memorial hospital - golden triangle. tonight i want to talk to you about minimally invasive surgery. for years surgery required a large incision in order for the surgeon to gain access inside the human body with their hands. thanks to technology and the development of smaller instruments, we can now perform surgical procedures t incisions less than half an inch in size. some procedures may require no incisions at all. minimally invasive surgery allows the surgeon to view the inside of the body with a small camera and then manipulate the organs or tissue with small surgical instruments. minimally invasive surgeons take years to develop specialized skills in order to operate via a video screen and without directly touching the organs. they must perform minimally invasive surgery on a regular basis in order to maintain these skills. minimally invasive surgery involves dedicated surgical teams and equipment. it may take longer to complete the minimally invasive procedure than the open procedure, but the minimally invasive surgery offers the patient advantages such as: decreased post-operative pain reduced blood loss a lower risk of infection and wound complications a reduced risk of blood clots and a decreased risk of scarring and adhesions the main benefit is that minimally invasive surgery allows patients to resume their normal routine in a matter of a few weeks or even days, instead of a couple of months as is the case with open surgery. if you are facing surgery, ask your surgeon if you are a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure. join us next time for health talk with baptist when we</media:text>

<media:text>we're going to be seeing temperatures in the 90s and it's not even summer yet. but all that extreme heat can turn dangerous very quickly. that's why 47 abc's danibozzini is standing by live in salisbury with some tips on how to stay cool in this heat! dani, its already looking pretty hot out there..how's it feeling? well brooke -- i've only been out here -- about 15 minutes and i'm already thinking about finding some shade because it is scorching out here already. its this kind of heat -- that can cause heat-related illnesses very quickly... thats why its important to remember these simple but important tips to stay safe. --try and schedule outdoor activities before 10:00 am and after 6:00 pm. --but if you do find yourself outside like myself...the best thing to do is to stay hydrated... regularly drink water and stay away from those sugary drinks because that can actually speed up dehydration. --and of course -- make sure you check on older adults and children during this heat because they are the most at risk. i will have even more tips later on during the newshour so make sure you check back in to 47 abc tonight. brooke back to you in the air conditioned studio. thanks, dani. again that was 47 abc's danibozzini live in salisbury. because of the high temperatures, several cooling centers will be opening up in wicomico county. you can take a look at the list of cooling centers at wicomico-health dot org due to high temperatures and humidity levels, the town of berlin electric department is asking customers to</media:text>

<media:text>and a new study from the journal of the american medical association is showing a link between over 200 common drugs and depression. research warns that depression could be a side effect of commonly prescribed drugs such as beta-blockers... birth control pills... antacids... and painkillers. the study showed depression rates of fifteen percent in people who used three or more drugs with depression as a side effect.... which is three times more than the 5-percent depression rate in people who did not take any. one local doctor says the study could have a huge impact... especially on her older-adult patients. "four or more medications is what we call polypharmacy. and that's constant across the county: about 40% of older adults are on four or more mediations. what this study shows us is that polypharmacy -- three or more medications is this study -- may lead to very, very serious medical condition like depression." the study does not necessarily show that these drugs cause depression.</media:text>

<media:text>new research is showing a link between diet and bullying. a study from saint louis university looked at world health organization surveys from over 150- thousand children... across 40 countries... in europe and north america. the data showed that students who had poor diets or weren't getting enough food... were more likely to bully their peers. diets associated with bullying included things like too much junk-food and not enough fruits and vegetables. the study only shows a connection between diet and bullying... and does not establish that poor diet causes bullying behavior. "and why it's a factor, we don't necessarily know that, but we do know that the brain requires nutrition, good nutrition, and enough nutrition to function properly. so it could be that when children aren't getting enough to eat or the right types of food to eat , the brain might not have to capacity to function at its best, and maybe that's bringing out some aggression." children who didn't get enough food were also more likely to be victims of bullying.</media:text>

<media:text>gist. when we do the colonoscopy, we put the camera inside the colon. it goes all the way into the colon, and if we see a polyp, which is like a small growth or a small mushroom in the colon, we can remove this polyp using special techniques we have. we can use a snare, we can take biopsies, and we can remove the polyp. when we remove the polyp, it decreases your risk of colon cancer. the human colon is about 5 feet long, it goes all the way from your left groin to your right groin, so when we do the colonoscopy, a good one should go all the way to the cecum, so that we can carefully and clearly map out your colon. we actually use carbon dioxide insufflation, where we make sure your exam is comfortable. so, with our techniques and technology, not only do you have a high quality exam, you also have a very comfortably exam. we use sedation and anesthesia, and we have very well trained anesthesia professionals. so you will not feel a thing. the best way to reach us is to call our friendly staff at 812-814-3417. you can also go on our website and learn more about our practice." good news from the indiana commission --</media:text>

<media:text>americans 65 and older will fall this year. every eleven seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room from a fall... and every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. as martie salt shows us... a new tech solution now finds help while coaching seniors how to stay strong. three years ago, 70- year-old sandy craven had a major stroke. she lives alone, and since then, she's fallen more than a dozen times. sometimes she can't get up. "one time i fell and i drug myself from the utility room into the den where i could get up in the recliner." (:10) sandy fell so often that she needed a lifeline. she tried several medical alert systems, but didn't like that they notified a call center and even called 9-1-1, before knowing if it was a real emergency. then she found this one, called my-notifi, which she wears on her wrist, like a watch. it detects falls, uses g-p-s and is connected to her cell phone. the device sends a text to her loved ones if she falls. if she can't speak, they will know to call 9- 1-1 immediately. "if you fall, you just instantly tap your phone. in just a minute, my daughter's phone will ring." (:09) "so i just received a notification that my mom has fallen." (:04) ("can you bring your arms up in front of you? good. can you bring them out to your side?") (:07) seniors often lose core strength, which contributes to instability. the my-notifi app also suggests exercises to improve strength and reduce falls. "they become more problematic as we get older because we take it for granted that it's going to happen rather than fight it." (:10) "you just feel helpless, but i don't feel helpless now." (:03) i'm martie salt</media:text>

<media:text>more than 200 thousand americans a year get weight loss surgery, and tens of thousands go to mexico to get it done. medical tourism is big business, but is it safe? in most cases, yes, but when there are complications, fixing the problem can be costly and painful. life is good for 32-year-old isabel torres and her family, but complications from bariatric surgery in mexico nearly killed her. cg isabel torres bariatric surgery patient in: :09 out: :12 "had this not worked, i don't know where i'd be." vo/narration..... isabel is here because of the innovative work of doctor steven leeds. three and a half years ago, isabel weighed 365 pounds. she got bariatric surgery to remove part of her stomach in mexico to save money, but there were complications, infections, and a leak that couldn't be fixed. several surgeries failed, she couldn't eat, and she was depressed. cg steven leeds, md gastrointestinal surgeon baylor university medical center in: :35 out: :44 "reading the chart, i knew we only had one option to go, we had to go to surgery. and this stomach that had been tortured now for over a couple of years needed to come out." vo/narration..... in a procedure he had done many times before for cancer patients, doctor leeds removed the entire stomach and attached the small bowel directly to the esophagus. steven leeds, md in: :54 out: 1:03 soundbite covered "we take the stomach out and we leave this bowel, and this is where the small bowel comes up to attach it to the esophagus." vo/narration..... since most of digestion actually takes place in the small intestine, a person can live without a stomach. isabel says she can eat almost anything,</media:text>

<media:text>the cricket center in berlin does a ton of work when it comes to helping children in worcester county. as a child advocacy center, they are always looking for ways to make the kids feel at a ease-- during a stressful time. and their newest employee is doing just that. meet josiah-- he is the cricket center's newest facility dog! now this isn't your ordinary dog. this labrador retriever mix is trained to respond to over 40 advanced commands. his new job will be working with children who have been abused. josiah welcomes children when they come in. we're told this helps the kids calm down-- so officials can do the forensic interview . when folks are here their family is in crisis and we're always looking for ways to help families get through those tough times and josiah is a great way for them to get a source of comfort, normalize things for them. eventually josiah will go to the courtroom with the children when they testify. but more than anything-- the cricket center is happy that josiah is getting some attention because it gets people talking about the signs and symptoms of abuse. in maryland -- state and local leaders are discussing the future of the state's health insurance marketplace. yesterday's meeting in salisbury -- was the second of four regional forums held throughout the state. 47abc's brooke butler has more. "we really want to hear from the local consumers local stakeholders whats important to this region and to this communuity and how we can best communicate to make sure that folks know that there is affordable health insurance options available." track the percentage of maryland residents without health insurance is at a historic low of 6 point 1 percent, according to the us census bureau. to get those people to enroll -- officials plan on partnering with community organizations such as churches, radio stations, schools, and more to educate people on how they can get insured and what options are available to them. "so without them we would not be able to do the job that we do to serve the lower shore." track after addressing how to get more people to enroll -- several policy changes that will affect marylanders in 20-19 were addressed. "whatever the outcome of our state innovation waiver application will be so as a part of sb 87 and hb 1795 out of the general assembly last year that governor hogan signed we raised 365 million dollars in state funds to help reduce premiums in the state of maryland." track according to wednesday's speakers, the maryland state government and our federal delegation have been working to get a reinsurance program in the state that will allow us to lower those premiums for 20-19 and beyond - which is expected to encourage more enrollment. "so like i said in the presentation its about 1200 dollars a year for the average maryland family premium relief if approved what that is expected to result in is a 5.8 percent increase in enrollment just because of reduced premiums." that was 47abc's brooke butler reporting we're told the enrollment process is very simple and that you still have plenty of time to enroll -- the 20-19 open enrollment period will run from november first to december 15th. we will provide all those tips that brooke just mentioned on our website -- 47abc dot com. one woman in michagan is filing a lawsuit after getting sick form pre cut watermelon. the woman says she bought the fruit at walmart and after eating it she became sick. officials say she tested positive for salmonella. the c-d-c is investigating a salmonella outbreak in several states. where 60 people have been infected. invesitgators say the illnesses started at the end of april .. reportedly pre-cut melon supplied by caito foods out of indianapolis-- is the likely source of the outbreak . coming up - jean will be back with this morning's forecast. and... we have a recap of your favorite local sports.. stay with us... you're watching good morning</media:text>

<media:text>a hip replacement system recently approved by the f-d-a is helping surgeons find the best alignment for the prosthetics. the optimized position system, or o-p-s, starts weeks before surgery, with x-rays, c-t scans, and 3-d models. martie salt has more. "polio as a child left barbara abbott with legs of different lengths. but hip pain that flared up a few years ago has slowed this active 72-year- old. even sitting to paint hurt. cg barbara abbott hip replacemen t patient in: :13 out: :23 "so i'm afraid at the point i might fall, because it's like a hot pan, you have to drop it. when you step on it at that perfect angle, it's just excruciating." (:10) vo/narration.. .... before surgery with the o-p-s system, patients get x-rays of how the pelvis moves in three positions. cg steven barnett, md orthopedic surgeon hoag orthopedic institute in: :29 out: :40 "then, with the use of a ct scan of the pelvis, we can create this patient-specific block that exactly matches the bony morphology of the pelvis." (:11) vo/narration.. .... those images are used to make a hip analysis and a 3-d model of barbara's hip. all this shows exactly where to put the socket and a guide block that's aligned with a laser. steven barnett, md in: :50 out: :59 "when we actually put the implant in, we just match up our laser points so that we know we've repeated the exact angles that we planned for pre-operatively." (:09) vo/narration.. .... the team takes x-rays during the procedure, too, to make sure everything lines up. doctor barnett says the o-p-s system adds a few minutes to the 45-minute surgery. steven barnett, md in: 1:09 out: 1:13 "her arthritis pain will be gone this afternoon once the surgery is over, and she'll be up walking." (:04) barbara abbott in: 1:13 out: 1:20 "since i'll be walking right away, i hope to be right out here going as soon as i can and get back on my bike." <media:text>hear was can help was flustered c1 3 has once again become front and center for national conversation.. licensed pastoral counselor dr. james stillwell is with us today... to help us sort out this difficult subject... and to help us in our discussion to know how we can make a difference in someone's life.. guest: dr. james stillwell title: company: dr. james stillwell ministries 1. it seems that suicide is more of a problem now than it has been in the past. c1 3 the stigma that makes it like it's a crime or send was more compassionate we can said differently, so save lives suicide took his own life okay the kind of thing is i suicide like good to me i think so conversation as it is something that a lot of little about does that hundred once a mole prevalent now all seems to be more prevalent now thing is the of those who complete suicides are is more that were prevalent now and the thing that we know in our culture in the united states is the thing that is more prevalent is got right okay especially with women as it used to be that women far more than men attempted suicide but now there getting up there equal with men during suicide because of okay okay it's super important is something that we also do know as well that in the last week phone calls to the suicide prevention line. i'm is up by 25 sent and i said to you. isn't that a good thing and you said yes but yes but so is interesting in that were giving lots of opportunity to give people information on how they can get help. you are much more conscious of that is a bad thing in the it's always a trigger for people who are suicidal are already thinking about it who are already thinking about planning a suicide or whatever, especially if they know the method so as media is responsible for us not to talk about the method is that in particular is a trigger for suicidal you okay ask you what to choose say the dates listed on to the dates for you you do when you he a someone talking about taking the okay don't dare them to do it that's not helpful if you think my sarcasm you're going to do any good. that's in particular with that with her ex-boyfriend is something that him to do. it happens all the guy was probably a few months he is not good and then blackshaw you don't swear to secrecy because of the one is also the listener i had to tell us where to secrecy because i am there to network with him to get them help okay but you offered little assurance don't you say things will be all right because it might not you have to do is get a game plan on what are the issues that are part of their psychic wound and how can we address those particular issues okay let's. the list of what the jews okay to think the supreme court break so the first one kind of correlates with the dots, which was afraid to ask the tough question just say are you thinking about committing suicide because they are already thinking about you not making them think about it by asking the question. second is that them safe take over means that the got piles of medicine everywhere find a relative or friend that can take that away from them. if there is a god available get that away from the person who suicidal okay what i was saying earlier on in the week that i had very close friends of mine. both husband and wife committed to doing lots of would say that i want to drop that would committed you're right and i didn't know that was have the i also did know that they had things in the the can do there was no warning sign right for you do because everyone was shocked right. the country was the were talking elbow grease of those who are friends or relatives of the suicidal people and that's a whole other thing is we need to be there for the grieving as well as being there for the person is the kabbalah lisping up the phone about on the people that you can call it for the about. i do know is it's one 800. i do know is it's one 802 73800-273-8255 that's one 800 that's one 802 73 told us the national suicide hot line given the basel you can also text the well we appreciate you coming this</media:text>

<media:text>41nbc dot com. with june being men's health awareness month, we want to shine light on a new procedure. if you're suffering from an enlarged prostate - there's a new medical technique bringing relief. 41nbc's tanya modersitzki has more on how the urolift system changed one patient's life. the urolift system is a tiny implant -- like the same width of this nickle. rick partin has suffered from enlarged prostate for a decade, and took medicine for seven of those years. after getting the urolift - he said goodbye to the pills. "i was just going to tak the meds and suffer the symptoms the rest of my life was the options were before the urolift come along." traditional surgery was out of the question for rick partin. " i didnt know what a uro lif was since it was a new procedure in this area i kind of drug my feet for awhile and let it get a longer track record." then last june, urologist dr joshua perkel with the urology specialists of georgia, said partin is the perfect candidate for a fairly new procedure - urolift. "with urolift we have a alternative to surgery." finally, some relief to partin's frustrations that once effected his quality of life. "you have to go a lo particulary at night time you have to plan ahead and know where the bathrooms at." the urolift system is a one-day in- office procedure that dr. perkel says is done in less than a hour. "most of the men coming i are already on medicine and the medicines not working." here's how it works: "there' the benine prostate enlargement and so the scope is going in there what they're doing is compressing the lobe that benine enlarged prostate is obsdtructing the flow . so the first phase is the needle comes out and deploys the capcilar end tab and in that compression, the suitors is a hort enoguh length that's its keeping that compression and the tab keeps it at that legnth." now, partin has a part of his life back because of urolift. he can enjoy activities without the constant urge of needing the bathroom. "i dont take an medicine now for it i dont have any side effects at all." you heard that right - there's absolutely no side effects with the urolift system. the recovering time is minimal. partin says he was uncomfortabl e for a few days, which is expected. after that - dr. perkel says they'll do a quick phone check up, then a few weeks later another check up. the urolift system doesn't stop the prostate from growing. it just helps so urine can flow in a normal fashion, so you may have to go get it adjusted afterwards. for more information on urolift, head to our website 41nbc-dot-com</media:text>

<media:text>something is missing from these refrigerator shelves when you consider the fact that every 2 seconds someone needs blood and we don't have enough donors we're putting patient care at risk a B&amp;O are critically low now the American Red Cross is dropping those letters a B &amp; O from its logo hoping the glaring illustration of missing letters will encourage blood donations major companies are doing the same for Brands like MasterCard State Farm and Oreo the problem is that the blood supply doesn't always meet the demands 38% of the US population is eligible to donate blood but only 3% ever do an NBC News call Leek Jack name of Donald knows firsthand why donations are vital for son Jensen has sickle cell disease he needs blood and a lot of it I have to come back every 3 weeks to get blood transfusions Jensen avoid the excruciating pain associated with sickle cell without that he would be in the hospital he would have pain the blood transfusions have kept him out of the hospital this photo shows the massive amount of blood that's removed from Jensen with each transfusion 9 to 10 bags like these are necessary to replace it just one patient among thousands Nationwide who need life-saving help from blood donations Erica Edwards NBC News</media:text>

<media:text>the st. joseph mayor's blue ribbon crime advisory committee met today at city hall drug use within the city of st. joseph was one the main topics of conversation also discussed was the opioid crisis, mental health issues and ways to address crime in the community this was the second meeting for the committee and members say they are still trying issues that people in the area are facing (sot: "well of course reducing crime in the community would be the goal for the committee and certainly the police force and the sheriff. uh, we are so new, we are trying to get our arms around exactly what it is that are the uh the driving factors for crime in the community." ) while a lot was discussed, all members were in agreement that the st. joseph police department has been efficient in trying to reduce crime over the past several years the recent high profile deaths of designer kate spade and celebrity chef anthony bourdain has put a new spotlight on suicide prevention... both missouri and kansas recently reported major spikes in suicide rates... kq2's madeline mcclain joins us to tell us how a lack of funding may be one big reason why...between 2005 and 2015-- more than 9 thousand 6 hundred people died by suicide in missouri.--or to put it visually-- enough people to fill up colorado's red rocks stadium. each year-- missouri sees a rise in suicides. for the fiscal year 2018-- missouri put 8 percent of its budget towards mental health. next year's budget-- 8 percent again. there was a $50 million dollar increase in that time-- but rising costs, inflation and dividing the money between all mental health issues --limits the impact. and locally- people available to answer a call for help are outnumbered. these are not quick calls where an officer can get there get the information and within 20 minutes be back out on the street. these are at a minimum a couple of hours a piece. you're looking at our of the 372 calls, approximately 744 man hours in the last 5 months. sergeant langston leads the area crisis intervention team. he says the st. joseph police department is 100 percent trained in mental health first aid. langston told community leaders today-- he is working to get the department more training but it's difficult to add more to an officer's full schedule. if you or someone you love needs help-- call the toll free national suicide prevention lifeline at 1 eight hundred 2 7 3 talk.that number will connect you to the nearest certified crisis center.reporting in studio, madeline mcclain, kq2 your local news leader.</media:text>
