Steve Van Doran recalls his dad as a ‘doodler’, who one day drew what would be known as the ‘jazz stripe’ on a desktop pad. That stripe was first sewn onto a Vans shoe back in 1977 and is one of the most recognizable logos worldwide.

In the skateboard world, names like Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, and Steve Caballero have become synonymous with the brand. Most pictures from in the early 80’s punk shows saw Henry Rollins and Ian Mackaye sporting Vans on stage, as were most of the on lookers hanging from the rafters or stage diving in packed basements or VFW halls.

Through the years Vans has weathered the turbulent ups and down of the skateboard industry and of economies in general and has stood the test of time, remaining consistent providing us all with a lasting imprint and we thank them for that.

Last week Steve Van Doren, Tony Alva and Steve Caballero were in Brooklyn, signing copies of ‘Vans: Off The Wall’. Check out the Vans site to buy it online.

East Coast...Fuck You

Skateboarding on the East Coast has long been one of the main reasons some of the areas best skaters head west, if not for long winters but for a permanent vacation. The winters in the Northeast can be brutal and before the dawn of some indoor parks, it’s been a down right treacherous affair.

Now, at least, there are enough indoors parks, within a fair driving distance, to get in your required work during the winter. For those who are not lucky enough to head west or even south for the winter, hibernation sets in.

East Coast Surfers, during the winter months, have a far more interesting dilemma: no indoor surf.

I grew up on the Jersey shore watching my friends compete in surf contests up and down the coast.
My respect for surfing comes, in part, from the fact that I just don’t do it very well, but mostly because of what they have to endure. Even when the waves are good, there is no guaranteeing the other conditions will be favorable for surfing. Winds, currents and most of all, extreme cold

The nature of their sport transforms them to live like volunteer firemen. Hurry up and wait. Wait for the rides; wait for the storm, pray for waves. Up early, out late. Always ready to answer the call.

Time has a way of slowing down out here in the winter, patiently waiting for epic surf days.

One such day took place this week in South Jersey in a town called Harvey Cedars. The event was the 2nd Annual Clam Jam. I arrived fashionably late at about 4pm and quickly took refuge in the Pine Gallery’s booth. Bunkered down with 3 walls to block the whipping winds and enough Lagers to last until the after party, I witnessed some of the toughest, bad ass surfing in a long time. The waves were overhead, the wind was fierce and the heats were long and grueling.

The surfers in the finals had probably surfed somewhere between six to eight heats since the early morning. it was approaching 6 p.m. , the sun was starting to set and still they were running back up the beach, against the wind to establish position and paddle out.

As each surfer passed, the cheering, heavily layered, blanket covered crowd, screamed as loud as they could during the 30 minute final.

This was truly a roots event, in a roots town and being a part of it all, reinforces my pride in the East Coast; in New Jersey.

So, cheers to the organizers, the sponsors, the crazy MC, the people who lined the beach and, most of all, to the surfers.

While I find myself lucky enough to get paid to attend some skate events, I don't get paid to attend them all. Apparently, the ones that include liquor are not as easy to expense anymore.

So when it comes to events on work nights that will cost me money and require driving all the way back into the city, I find myself torn between going to the party and risk being awake until 4 a.m. or staying home and be asleep by 10 p.m.

This night 10 p.m. won.

Not that the thought of another late night at Santos Party House drinking $10 Captain & Cokes wasn't tempting but, hey, sometimes you have to pick your battles.

So I have no tall tales and notes from the underground. For all the juicy details ask Cronheim.

Delta Airlines Can Eat My Fuck Part One

What was supposed to be my first writing assignment for firststoke.com and also my first road-trip with Rockstar Bearings, I was anxious to get my journey underway.

For the past 20 or so years of travel, it seems I have flown Continental Airlines exclusively. In that time, I have rarely been late, missed a connection or never had a bad meal, even for airline standards.

Twice this year I had assignments in Los Angeles and twice the powers that be have booked me on Delta Airlines. This last one took the prize for most annoying inconveniences.

My puddle jumper flight to Ohio proved to be only the beginning a nightmare it seemed I would never wake up from. There were mechanical issues with the plane that was to take us to Santa Ana, California. After waiting for 30 minutes the voice over the PA had the nerve to tell us that "There is an issue with the landing gear and because it is a weekday, they should have no problem getting a mechanic down to the plane?"

No problem finding a mechanic?? You mean if this was a weekend we'd have to actually wait up to 24 hours for a service man to show up?!. Would the weekend rate be applied to our tickets?

Please!!! Spare us.

After another 30 minutes the voice announces, "Thank you for your patience. The mechanic has arrived but is unfamiliar with this aircraft. We are waiting for a fax from the home office with a diagram of the plane."

HELLO!!!! Are you fucking kidding me?

Next was "Ladies and gentleman, when I said the mechanic was unfamiliar with this aircraft, I didn't mean to say he didn't know what he was doing but rather that he would take more care because of his unfamiliarity with this particular plane."

Check please!!!! And can you please put these four peanuts in a to-go container...thanks!!!!

So 17 of us are taken off of the plane and shuttled to Atlanta, where just to add spice to this chili, the pilot arrives at the wrong gate. So after we taxi around to the correct gate and take the 10 minute air-train ride to the next terminal, we find that our connecting flight has taken off.

No one had informed the gate agent that there were 17 people racing to catch this plane which, of course, was the last one that was leaving for California that morning. Next flight 4pm. It is 8:30 am and we are stuck in Atlanta Airport all day.

Welcome to Fridays, welcome to Chili's, welcome to the Budweiser bar is all I wanted to hear for the next 8 hours.

The Last Days of Jay Henry

All good things come to an end, so the saying goes. And our time with Jay Henry in NYC was far too short. All in all, it was about seven months of random parties, shows, bike jaunts over the W.Burg bridge and Spanish league soccer at the taco joint.

Well it’s back to the city Monday and very little has changed here. The office still smells like Chinese food, only 4 times worse because the air conditioning
was off for the extended holiday.

The New York sports scene is reeling. The Rangers got rid of Avery and sent Jagr walking. The Mets, while playing like shit, are not that far out of the race, do in large part to the rest of the NL east playing like shit as well.

The Yankees are only a few losses from being complete Talapia. Talapia, you ask? Yeah, bottom feeders who only survive by eating the shit of bigger and better fish. And the Knicks? Well let’s just let sleeping dogs lie. Damn, I can’t wait to get back to Philadelphia.

My trip home was an adventure. Over the course of a couple days we had sharks in our rivers, a beached whale, people jumping from burning buildings and traffic out the ass.

Friday night I reminded my Asbury Park friends how absolutely drunk I can get in a 4-hour period. So much so that the friends I haven’t seen in months, may no longer want to see me for at least a few more. Then on Saturday, I showed my friends out west how boring I am when I am sober.

In web/rss feed news, skateboardfan.com site is still under heavy construction; the houseofsteam.com site is two years old this summer and I am working on another travel piece for Clubdub.com. Ken Salerno’s book seems to have shifted gears from neutral to first. That’s it from here.

Legends of Style has invited WSP to co-host the afternoon preview for this Urban Artist Showcase. This pre-show is from Noon to 5pm and is for all ages.

It's been nice and quiet here in New Jersey, sort of. I've been home for a bit and catching up on work, writings and getting ready for a busy week in New York.

Since about everything I own is getting fixed, including my camera, I have spent the past few days playing sniper online and grabbing some pics that have some sort of meaning to me.
So here, in no particular order, are some of my faves.

Cat Power has been in heavy rotation at my house and office for months. I came across this pic taken by skateboard photographer, Patrick O'dell. I love when two seemingly seperate parts of my life come together.

I am a huge fan of Jeremy Fish's art and also a big fan of red wine. Kinda cool to see a pic combining the both of them, taken by Rick Marr, in Rome.
