Anaphora Presents the Carma Trio & Friends, Tuesday, November 10, 7:00 PM

Location: Sherwood Conservatory (1312 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago).

General admission is $10. Students are free with valid student ID.

Emphasizing the value of musical performance and audience engagement, Carma Trio & Friends was co-programmed by Anaphora's founding Violinist and Clarinetist: Aurelien Pederzoli & Cory Tiffin. Tiffin and Pederzoli have been performing together since they met at DePaul University in 2004 and shortly thereafter toured with Pianist Matthew Ganong as the "Carma Trio."

The Trio will lead Anaphora's latest concert with works by Aram Khachaturian and Gian Carlo Menotti. The program also features Ernõ Dohnányi's Sextet. Please contact Lisa Dell at dell.lisa@gmail.com for further details about the performance and performers.

PROGRAM

Aram Khachaturian: Trio for Clarinet, Violin, Piano.

Gian Carlo Menotti: Trio for Clarinet, Violin, Piano.

Erno Dohnanyi: Sextet in C, op 37 for Violin, Viola, Cello, Clarinet, Horn and Piano.

The Carma Trio is the longest-standing subgroup within Anaphora. The Trio has performed extensively in the greater Chicagoland area, as well as throughout the United States and Europe for both private events and public concerts over the last 4 years. One might say the Trio laid the foundation for what would one day become Anaphora.

Anaphora, formed in May 2008, is dedicated to performing, developing and enhancing classical, jazz and contemporary music alike. Anaphora showcases performance-focused artists through unique programming in a variety of venues. Anaphora encourages its performers to nurture the synergy between modern stage performance and the art-music establishment. Anaphora exists to bring musical classics into this age, to fuse the fresh with the familiar and to convey one coherent statement about the music of our time.

Sherwood Conservatory of Music is an urban center for comprehensive community music education. A member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, the Conservatory trains gifted young musicians who anticipate careers in music, beginning and amateur musicians of all ages, preschool children and parents, and professional musicians and music educators seeking continuing education.

4th Annual Free Children's Dental Day, Wednesday, November 11, 8:00 AM

We'll be having our 4th Annual Free Children's Dental Day. After Halloween and before Thanksgiving, we'll be helping families remember their oral health by providing free dental exams and cleanings to children under the age of 13.

A state law in Illinois requires dental exams for school aged children and this exam would qualify for that requirement and could save many families a lot of money. We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us get the word out about this event somehow. We've done it in the past, but we would really like to help even more families this time around.

G.I.F.T., Thursday, November 12, 8:00 PM

Conceived and directed by Collaboraction company member and Creative Director, Sam Porretta, and inspired by Lewis Hyde's "The Gift," G.I.F.T. explores the nature of gifts, community and culture while leading the audience on a partially open-aired journey through a sprawling warehouse compound and soundstage.

An ensemble of 11 performers and a multi-disciplinary design team bring a new world to life in a production that is not a typical "holiday" offering. Otherworldly characters exist in strange worlds of their own and among the audience members, as they bring the audience on a journey that traverses through four different environments built within the 7,000 square foot compound that Collaboraction now calls home.

In an interactive and transformative environment, audiences can participate and ruminate on gifting as we enter a season full of certain expectations.

Kelly Roush of St. Charles, guest artist and AU adjunct faculty member, will direct. Cast members are Tegan Rogers of Aurora (Matilde); Abby Juhlin, Aurora (Lane); Corrine Walker, Greenville, S.C., (Virginia); Jeff Goins, Aurora (Charles); and Sarah Bonnell, Aurora (Ana).

Matilde, a recently-hired Brazilian maid for Lane, is new to America. A year prior, her parents, both comedic geniuses in Brazil, died within days of each other. Ever since, Matilde has vowed to find the perfect joke even though she is convinced it will kill her.

Lane, a successful physician, requires an ordered, pristine world, but when her obsessively maternal sister, Virginia, usurps the Brazilian comedienne maid, and her oncologist husband runs off with a patient with breast cancer; the dirt starts flying. Pulitzer runner-up Sarah Ruhl approaches the mess of mortality with a search for humor and compassion.

As the pressures in Lane's life multiply, and her oncologist husband runs off with an Argentinian breast-cancer patient, the dirt starts to fly. Life isn't clean after all, and how they face the mess of mortality, really determines how they live.

Reservations are required. For reservations or more information, call (630) 844-4924, e-mail artsandideas@aurora.edu or visit www.aurora.edu/artsandideas.

The Irish Heritage Singers Annual Concert, Sunday, November 15, 3:00 PM

The Irish Heritage Singers will hold their annual concert this fall at the Irish American Heritage Center.

Slainte and Shalom: Our Blended History Through Music and Dance. Tickets are $15 for IAHC members, $20 for general admission and children 12 and under are free. The concert is a fundraiser for the Irish American Heritage Center.

This unique concert features Irish and Jewish music, dance and culture, celebrating the blend of the two cultures that co-exist in Ireland. The concert is inspired by the film Shalom Ireland, a documentary about Ireland's remarkable, yet little known Jewish community. The film was shown at the IAHC in 2007 and joined together nearly-sold out crowds of Chicago's Irish and Jewish communities.

The Irish Heritage Singers will be joined by guest performers, Jewish choir, Kol Zimrah, the Jewish Community Singers and the Edgar Gabriel Eclectic Ensemble, performing Klezmer music.

Kol Zimrah is a volunteer civic chorus serving the metropolitan Chicago area. The mission of Kol Zimrah is to sustain and interpret the great tradition of Jewish choral music, to serve as a musical resource for the region and to encourage the composition of new Judaic choral works.

The Irish Heritage Singers, under the direction of Evanston Resident, Mary Grimes, are the Irish American Heritage Center's resident choir. The Singers have distinguished themselves throughout the Midwest by performing and expanding the great Irish and Irish American vocal tradition. Their performances have been as distant as Sligo, Ireland and as local as Celtic Fest Chicago and have included performing for two Presidents of Ireland as well as senior citizens in Evanston.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 773-282-7035, ext. 10.

Bruce Hornsby at the MAC, Sunday, November 15, 7:00 PM

Grammy Award-winning artist Bruce Hornsby brings some of his most popular songs and crowd favorites to the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage,
425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

Hornsby, who has recorded 13 albums, has also collaborated with a number of artists, including Bob Dylan, Crosby Stills and Nash, and Willie Nelson. He co-authored "The End of the Innocence" with Don Henley and played piano on Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." Hornsby was also a part-time member of The Grateful Dead from 1990 to 1992, appearing on four of the band's albums.

Most recently, Hornsby released a bluegrass album with Ricky Skaggs and a jazz album with Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBride.

Known for his impromptu set lists, Hornsby walks into every performance not knowing what he'll play, instead relying on audience requests. Those attending the Nov. 15 concert, therefore, should come with some written suggestions to place on the stage.

Tickets are $65 for adults, $63 for seniors and $55 for youth. First- and second-row tickets are $90 for adults, $88 for seniors and $80 for youth.

For more information, call the MAC Ticket Office at (630) 942-4000, or visit: www.atthemac.org.

American Revival Hits the MAC Mainstage, Friday, November 20, 8:00 PM

Drawing in acoustic, folk, country and bluegrass music, American Revival, featuring The Dixie Bee-Liners, Sierra Hull and Uncle Earl, will perform at the McAninch Arts Center Mainstage at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

American Revival highlights exciting young artists in an expansive repertoire of musical genres. Participating artists have performed at Telluride, MerleFest, the Grand Ole Opry and on Prairie Home Companion.

The Dixie Bee-Liners' recent album, "Ripe," sported two number one hits on Bluegrass Music Profiles' Top 20 Hot Singles and the Roots Music Report Bluegrass Chart. The sextet offers a custom blend of traditional and contemporary sounds, incorporating banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolins and other instruments. The band currently is recording a bluegrass concept album.

Eighteen-year-old mandolin phenom Sierra Hull first took up the instrument a decade ago. In the years since, she's built a strong reputation for solid picking skills and has won several mandolin and guitar championships. She released her debut album, "Secrets," in 2008 and is lauded by critics for her tender and eloquent vocals.

The all-female Uncle Earl formed in 1999 and is steeped in the tradition of American music, with a contemporary, modern twist. The "g" "Earl" powerhouse string band is known for their infectious performances and toe-tapping melodies.

A free MAC Chat with the artists will be held prior to the Nov. 20 performance.

Tickets to American Revival are $40 for adults, $38 for seniors and $30 for College of DuPage students and youth.

Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score's songs include such classics as "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There is Nothin' Like A Dame," "This Nearly Was Mine" and "A Wonderful Guy."

Revisited are the big venues as well as smaller lounges and clubs from the Sutherland Show Lounge, Robert's Show Lounge, and the staples of Chicago Blues Smitty's Corner, the 708 Club and the Checkerboard Lounge where the new intense electrified blues evolved and reached its commercial and artistic apex when Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Junior Wells, 'Sonny Boy' Williamson and Memphis Slim lit up the nightclub scene in Bronzeville.
These great artists, - who personified in their lives and music a common African-American heritage and experience- performed the venues, created new forms of music and entertainment, and were a true link to the beginnings of the popular music, with their music was recorded and distributed on Chicago's Record Row.
