Camp J.A.M., Thursday, July 16

Camp J.A.M. (Juvenile Arthritis & Me) is a four day excursion for children with arthritis and related conditions to meet and have fun in a camp environment where taking medication and frequent rest breaks are part of the normal activities of the day. Although 300,000 children nationwide live with some sort of rheumatic condition, children with juvenile arthritis often feel like they are the only ones with this chronic illness. Camp J.A.M. is an opportunity for children ages 8-17 to build self-esteem and leadership skills with activities such as arts and crafts, archery, boating, swimming, canoeing and tower and zip line. Many of the camp counselors were once Camp J.A.M. kids. A nurse will be on property the entire weekend with a rheumatologist on call.

Camp J.A.M. will take place Thursday, July 16 through Sunday, July 19 at Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva, WI.

Celebrating 41 years of beautiful gardens, rocking music and delicious food, the Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival opens its gates July 18-19 in Sheffield's Garden District of Chicago.

Over 35,000 people have attended the Garden Walk in recent years. Event managers expect this year's attendance to be among the highest ever due to an extremely strong line-up of bands, more than 90 resident gardens for public viewing and the popular children's activities. In addition, both novice and experienced gardeners can take advantage of the Garden Center, where advice from Master Gardeners on topics such as plant material, design style and challenges peculiar to urban gardens, and guided garden and architectural tours are available.

Appearing for the first time at the Garden Walk, Rusted Root, a roots-rock band from Pittsburgh that enjoys a national following will close out Saturday's strong entertainment schedule. Cowboy Mouth, a New Orleans rock n'roll band and Garden Walk favorite will return as a Saturday co-headliner, hitting the stage at 6pm.

Back from their 2007 Garden Walk electric performance will be local favorite Poi Dog Pondering to headline Sunday night. Funkadesi, a local renowned world music group, will open for Poi Dog at 6pm on Sunday while teen favorite and family friendly School of Rock will kickoff Sunday's musical line-up at 12:15pm.

Festival highlights include:
A line-up of live entertainment from local and national artists. This year's Main Stage features:

The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (ATRU) proudly presents On Stage with Megon McDonough, "An Evening with Megon McDonough." This unique, up-close-and-personal concert allows the audience to enjoy the rare and exciting experience of sitting at tables of six on the stage of the magnificent Auditorium Theatre while enjoying one of the nation's most talented cabaret stars. The stage is transformed into an intimate 1940s-style cabaret club with tables, cocktail service and light appetizers, complete with a magnificent view of the Auditorium Theatre's Louis Sullivan-designed interior from a vantage point typically reserved for performers.

Best known for her work as one of the original members of the Four Bitchin' Babes, singer, songwriter and entertainer McDonough performs signature songs of platinum divas of stage, screen, music halls and clubs who sang their way right into the hearts of audiences around the country. Her Auditorium debut performance includes songs by the ladies of the British Invasion such as Petula Clark, Lulu and Dusty Springfield, along with American counterparts Judy Collins, Janis Ian and Janis Joplin. According to Bill Campbell, ABC 7 Chicago, McDonough is "truly one of the most gifted and authentic of performers."

Chicago native Megon McDonough has performed on stages as varied as The Cellar Door and Carnegie Hall, and as the opening act for John Denver, Steve Martin and Harry Chapin. She is an accomplished comedic actress having appeared in numerous theatrical productions including "Pump Boys and Dinettes" and "Beehive." McDonough was also nominated for a Jeff Award for her box office record-breaking starring role in "Always Patsy Cline." She won an ACE Cable TV award for singing the theme song for an HBO Olympic ice-skating special, and recorded a song for a Danielle Steel TV movie. As a recording artist, McDonough has released nine solo albums including her most recent critically acclaimed "My One and Only Love." She has also performed on five compilation albums and released five albums with the Four Bitchin' Babes.

Single tickets are now on sale, ranging in price from $50 for general seats to $75 for VIP seats.

Hearland Animal Shelter's Walk of Love, Saturday, July 18, 9:30 AM

It's time to get out your walking and running shoes and get the family team together for the Third Annual Walk of Love to benefit Heartland Animal Shelter. This year's event is at Blue Star Memorial Forest Preserve in Glenview, which is located on East Lake Avenue west of Harms Road.

Along with the leisurely 2K walk through the forest preserve, this year's event will also feature a 9K for K9s run that will be open to individuals and teams. Everyone is welcome to participate both with and without their dogs. Online registration is at www.heartlandanimalshelter.net and participants may also raise pledges by creating their own personal Walk of Love Web page.

Registration is $20 for adults in advance and $25 the day of the event; children 3-12 are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the event; families with up to six members are $50 in advance and $55 the day of the event; and children under 3 are free. Along with registering online, you may also register by mail by sending a check to Heartland Animal Shelter, 2975 Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062 in care of the Walk of Love or by calling (847) 296-6400.

"The Walk of Love and 9K for K9s is a wonderful event for people and their dogs and our sponsors to get together to help raise money for the current residents of Heartland Animal Shelter," said Executive Director Stephanie Preiser. "Many Heartland alumni participate in this event and it's very heartwarming to see how they are thriving with their new families."
After the walk and run, join Heartland's staff and volunteers for a breakfast, doggie photos, raffles, other activities and prizes. All participants receive a T-shirt and there are prizes for the top fund-raisers.

Proceeds benefit Heartland Animal Shelter, a no-kill humane organization dedicated to finding homeless animals their forever homes while educating the public on spaying and neutering their pets in order to decrease pet over population. Because Heartland is a 501(c)3 organization, all donations are tax deductible.

Further information about the Walk of Love and the 9K for K9s Run, adoption, volunteer opportunities and other upcoming events is at www.heartlandanimalshelter.net. Pets available for adoption may be found at www.petfinder.com. Heartland generally has around 125 cats and kittens and 40 dogs and puppies available for adoption and in 2008 adopted 1,100 animals, which was new annual high for the shelter.

The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University presents Apple Tree Theatre's "The Mistress Cycle", Wednesday, July 22, 7:30 PM

For the first time in its storied history, the Auditorium Theatre will transform its stage into an intimate 200-seat black box-style theater, with all audience members seated on-stage with the performers in a unique new theatrical experience. Boasting an established 26-year history as one of the North Shore's premier performance venues, this is the first production Apple Tree Theatre will mount in Chicago's loop. "The Mistress Cycle" will play the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress, July 22 - August 8, 2009.

"The Mistress Cycle," with music by Jenny Giering and lyrics by Beth Blatt, breaks the mold of the traditional book musical, instead offering audiences a "song cycle" that illuminates stories of passion, sacrifice and strength of spirit. "The Mistress Cycle" explores the lives and loves of five notorious mistresses: Tess Walker, a contemporary Manhattan photographer; Anais Nin, the famed sexual adventurer of the early 20th century; Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of King Henri II of 16th century France; Lulu White, a turn-of-the-century New Orleans bordello Madame; and Ching, a 14-year-old concubine in 12th century China.

Gardeners of the North Shore Garden Walk , Sunday, July 26, 12:00 PM

Time: noon to 5 p.m.

FREE admission.

Erika and Eberhard Land, 4095 Pamela Ave., Northbrook IL, 60062 Behind our garden gate you will discover a bucolic garden setting complete with a stream, a pond of koi fish, a gazebo, a covered patio, deck and greenhouse. A fairly large garden with a rainbow of plantings.

Merilee and John Novinson, 1105 Adirondack, Northbrook IL, 60062 A perpetual work in progress, the current version of John and Merilee Novinson's 'Sun and Stars' garden features multiple flower strewn arbors leading one through distinct garden rooms. The 'Rainbow Bed,' a 40 foot perennial bed seen through the east side gate, is named for its bright colors and full sun location. Artistic touches from whimsical garden sculpture, water features, tuteurs, a pergola and the mellow sound of chimes ringing throughout the garden all enhanced by the sweet fragrance of flowers and foliage are designed to relax, calm and nourish those who visit . Large deciduous trees provide a framework throughout the property tying the many pieces together.

Sam and Andi Solomon, 620 Carriage Way, Deerfield IL, 60015
Ours is a garden with morning sun and afternoon shade. It thus lends itself to growing hostas, coleus, caladiums and elephant ears; hydrangeas also like this lighting. In our garden there are 168 varieties of hostas. The garden is relatively new but 40% of the hostas have reached their mature form. There is a path that wends its way through the entire backyard as there is no lawn. Scattered about are annuals and perennials. Hostas are also located in front of the house and along the driveway. We would love to share our garden with you.

Lana and Rich Gernady, 6509 Palma Lane, Morton Grove, IL 60053
Our garden is a work in progress with flowers in bloom from March to November. It includes perennials, annuals, roses, vines, hostas, hanging baskets, flowering bushes, fruit trees, blueberries, and even a potted tomato tree. Garden critters and bird houses everywhere add to the charm. Everything is done by the owners, from brick edging, bush and tree trimming, to construction of the glass house, brick and patio pond. A never ending work of love. Everyone welcome.

Alan and Barbara Schulman, 3 Foxtail Lane, Riverwoods, IL, 60015
This 1 acre property contains 20 unique areas of sunny floral and textured, shade plantings. Many of these areas are 2009 plantings and many existing gardens have been upgraded. Your walk will begin by entering a bending stone path surrounded by mature Pine, Spruce and White Birch trees that have a carpet of shade loving Hostas, Ferns, Hydrangeas, Astilbe, evergreen bushes and other plantings on the ground below. A long berm containing hundreds of these shade plantings leads to a waterfall and stream surrounded by numerous blooming plants as well as dark and lime colored green textured ground covers. A distinctive Red Japanese Maple overlooks the stream garden from its position at the height of the waterfall. Opposite the stream are bright beds of Impatiens and Hydrangeas as well as a fountain garden bordering a shaded, sitting area.

The back of the yard fronts a small beach and raised deck overlooking the lake. The shoreline is covered with thousands of red Daylilies and a newly planted Hybrid Daylily collection. On the lakeside deck there are hanging baskets of flowers and a potted herb garden. The South garden features beds of blooming Astilbe, Hybrid Daylilies, Coral Bells, Hosta and Ferns. Your walk will then bring you past another woodland area filled with more shade loving plantings and the front entrance of the house that has bright beds of Impatiens and Begonia baskets. The driveway garden has two sides that abound with textured plantings under arching Birch, Crabapple, Red Japanese Maple and Locust trees.. As you exit the garden be sure to view the new "Purple and Orange" street side garden. This part sun garden shows off its purple Salvia and Scabiosa surrounded by orange Lilies, Cone Flowers, Crocosmia and Asclepias.

The Gardeners of the North Shore meets in the Chicago Botanic Gardens in the Fairchild room on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. You do not have to live on the north shore to join. Dues are $30/year.

Greeks Challenge 4 Charity , Saturday, August 1

Charity Contributors of Chicago is partnering with Little Feet Daycare & Day Camp a 501(c)3 organization, for the upcoming event "Greeks Challenge4Charity." Our goal is to raise money to build a daycare center for Little Feet Daycare & Day Camp and focus on providing quality affordable childcare for families who meet the poverty income level, but exceed the amount to qualify for childcare assistance. We need to raise $100,000 to build a center that will accommodate at least 100 children.

Our fundraiser goal is $10,000. On August 1, 2009, Frats and Soros will take their "brother and sister hoods" to the gym floor for a friendly game of basketball and a stepping competition, while raising funds for Little Feet Daycare & Day Camp. These groups and individuals are using the art of step and the skill of basketball to create a stage for humanitarian contributions that will paint an extraordinary picture of Future Leaders, Change and Community Building.

Illinois Child Identification Program, Tuesday, August 4, 5:00 PM

The Western Springs Masonic Lodge No. 1136 is pleased to announce that it will once again offer its Illinois Child Identification Program (also called IL CHIP) to families, free of charge, during this year's National Night Out, which will be held at Spring Rock Park, Central Avenue & Elm Street in Western Springs.

IL CHIP is sponsored by local Masonic Lodges and events are held at neighborhood functions or community schools across the state to provide parents with everything they need to help authorities find their lost child. It is the most comprehensive program of its kind.

What participants* get at an IL CHIP event:

A CD that contains a color, digital photo that shows the image and height of the child.

A recorded interview is also provided on the same CD that shows the child' appearance, speech patterns, personal characteristics and mannerisms. The CD provides a very convenient way for police to circulate information about the child to the media within an hour via Illinois Amber Alert Program.

A DNA sample taken through a swab of saliva in the cheek. This is the latest tool used by scientific investigators to make positive ID's of lost children.

Fingerprints, the oldest form of positive identification, are also taken since they are unique to every individual.

*Parents must accompany their children and sign a parental consent form.

For more information, call Ray Kustush at 708-602-0348.

Kiwanis Club of Elgin Fay's Barbeque Fundraiser, Saturday, August 22, 4:00 PM

Time: 4:00 - 7:00.

Location: Epworth United Methodist Church, Highland and Randall Roads in Elgin.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.
Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things happen!
To accomplish our mission the Kiwanis Club of Elgin hosts an annual fundraiser featuring locally acclaimed Fay's Pork Chop & Chicken Barbeque. If you've never had Fay's, you're in for a treat. If you have, you know what I mean! Diners can eat-in or carry out. The event takes place "rain or shine".

Please send your check made out to the Kiwanis Club of Elgin for $12.00 per ticket. Upon receipt, tickets will be mailed out well in advance of the event. If you are not able to join us, of course we would welcome your donation. Please send your contribution to:

Gala of the Arts Fundraiser for Emergency Services, Friday, September 11, 6:30 PM

Catholic Charities Sets the Stage at Navy Pier Featuring Performance and Visual Art at Its Gala of the Arts Fundraiser for Emergency Services.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago's Gala of the Arts, which supports the agency's extensive Emergency Assistance program serving people in crisis, features an evening dedicated to the "Spirit of America" with a live performance of great American song and dance and visual art.

The eighth annual Gala of the Arts event is set at Navy Pier's Grand Ballroom, 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago. The Gala will showcase a celebration of performing artists as well as local and regional visual artists who will have pieces for sale. Also, the night will feature an encore exhibit and sale of photography by guests of Catholic Charities' Tuesday Night Suppers who have participated in the "Visions of My Life" photography project.

Gala guests will enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as they mill about the historic and spacious Grand Ballroom at the east end of Navy Pier viewing artwork for purchase and bidding on an array of silent auction items. Guests will then enjoy dinner followed by a program featuring song and dance numbers from some of America's greatest hits directed by Rachel Rockwell featuring local professional talent.

The Gala of the Arts fundraiser presents works of 15 Chicago area artists covering several media including oil, drawings, portraits, landscapes, still life and photography. Original jewelry will also be available for purchase. Each professional artist will display several works which will be available for purchase and commission.

Last year Catholic Charities™ Emergency Assistance Program served more than 160,000 individuals and families in crisis with food, shelter, clothing and supportive services through eight service centers located throughout Cook and Lake counties. Depending on the location and service type, Catholic Charities has seen increases in demand for services from between 20 to 90 percent and seeks support so that it may continue our mission.

In addition, several guests of Catholic Charities™ Tuesday Night Suppers participating in the "Visions of My Life" photography project will display their photographs illustrating life on the streets of the city through their eyes. For the past seven years, program participants have been provided basic instruction in photography as well as disposable cameras that they are encouraged to use to capture memorable photographic moments in their lives.

Susanne and Mark Tunney, of Oak Park, are the Gala chaircouple. Fifth Third Bank continues as the presenting sponsor for the event.

Cocktails and art sale begin at 6:30 p.m. Dinner and entertainment follow beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $250 each. Black Tie optional.

American Diabetes Association's Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes, Sunday, October 4

This year, hundreds of area residents will come together at Pottawatomie Park to raise funds for Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes, one-day signature, fundraising walk benefiting the American Diabetes Association. Every dollar raised through Step Out plays an important role in supporting the Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Together we can stop diabetes. One step at a time.
