While clubbing is all about having fun, it’s important to remember that this is nightlife, and darker things come out at night. Always be aware of your surroundings and know about the destination you’ll visit before heading on over. Serious injury, trauma or even death are all preventable on your part and all it takes are a few precautionary measures.

Sorry to kill the buzz on your spontaneity. Perhaps clubbing just isn’t the same as it used to be. What with the easy accessibility of drugs and alcohol, it’s often easy to become uninhibited and unaware of any bad vibes going on around the event.

Remember there is safety in numbers. Always go out with a group, especially if you’re female. Check in with your friends every once in a while and make a plan to meet up somewhere, such as the bathroom entrance, at the bar or near the back exit at a certain time before you all head home. Try to stay in pairs and watch out for each other. Leave as a group or at least pairs, never walk home alone. If you take a cab, make sure it’s with a recognizable company you’ve used before.

Keep an eye on your drinks at all times. Even if you run to the ladies room, have a friend hold on to your beverage for you. Club drugs such as GHB are easy to drop into drinks and are colorless, odorless and tasteless so you won’t even realize you’ve been slipped something until it hits you. Drink out of bottles if possible, or hold your drink in front of you. If you start to feel abnormal and experience any symptoms of being drugged, such as loss of consciousness, dizziness, vomiting or unusual confusion check in with a friend as soon as possible and have someone either get you to a hospital or home right away.

Drink water too! While it can sometimes cost as much as beer, water is much more important especially if you’ve been drinking for a while or if you’re experimenting with the darker side of the club atmosphere. Dehydration caused by ecstasy use is not uncommon, and water also helps your body control its heating a cooling systems.

Pack light. Leave any unneeded cards, money, keys and accessories at home. Pack your cell phone, ID, debit card and cash—but not a large amount of cash. Purses are not only annoying to pack around the dance floor but they’re easier to steal. Don’t pack a lot of cash unless you’re looking for unwanted attention and leave behind credit cards if you can. You’ll want a cell phone or phone card at the least in case you need to find an alternate way home or call a taxi. Always bring ID!

Know how you’re getting home. Don’t leave it up to maybe’s, especially if your location is out of the way. Have a taxi number in your cell phone, or assure you’re getting a sober ride home. Never accept rides from strangers—no matter how elementary that sounds, and never give rides to strangers. People wear a lot of faces at night, and you could only be reading one of them.

Do not buy or accept drugs at a club. It’s pretty common knowledge that drugs sold at clubs are dirty, and you may be getting a sugar pill, or even something that was never meant to enter the human body. Most club dealers are simply looking for an easy buck and while they walk away with your money you can be walking away with a terrible hangover, at the least.

Party smart and listen your intuition. If a situation feels wrong or you’re not feeling the vibe, check out and try something else or go home. There will always be another night and wasting your precious dollars at a place where all you can think about is your new down comforter is useless.

All said, do not be afraid to go clubbing! Some organizations will have you believe that clubbing is unsafe, but it only is if you’re unprepared. By following the simple steps outlined above and employing a little common sense you’ll have a blast, meet tons of great people looking to have fun and, of course, have the opportunity to listen to great dance music.

While it can be hard to compare to the debauchery and utter musical mayhem of European countries like Spain, the clubbing scene in the United States has a handful of well-designed, popular nightclubs. Featuring good tunes, a great party scene and atmosphere—not to mention much cheaper drinks than you’d find in places like Ibiza—we definitely know how to get down here in the States.

While underground clubs and dirty warehouses can sometimes offer more interesting and intimate DJ-audience experiences, it’s clubs like the ones mentioned below that have created a name for themselves as true party destinations in the hottest cities.

Pacha New York

First off we’ll mention Pacha New York. Typically anything attached to the Pacha name is bound to throw a good party, but New York’s 30,000-plus square foot labyrinth is truly a standout American nightclub. With a capacity of 2,000 there is nearly a party every night here. Whether you’re up-front dancing to the likes of Benny Benassi or Victor Calderone, or chilling in the mirror lounge, Pacha sets the night off right.

Mansion

Miami, Florida is a clubbing destination in itself, featuring a number of great clubs with live DJ music. Mansion is the epitome of everything Miami nightlife is about. Sexy, stylish and fun, this nightclub—partially owned by rocker Mick Jones’ son Roman Jones—is a VIP haven, featuring the best of electro house and techno. Acts like Deadmau5, Dubfire and the LA Riots grace the tables at Mansion, elevating the Miami heat.

Beta

Beta in Denver, Colorado sets the pace for futuristic design in both sound and structure. This eco-conscious nightclub was created by Beatport’s Brad Roulier and features a 100% green lounge and Feng Shui design that adds to the whole amazing vibe of the place. Voted #2 in America on DJMag’s 2009 Top 100 list you’ll see everyone from Ferry Corsten to Andy Moor to David Guetta top the booth here.

Avalon

Before we get back to Miami, we have to mention Avalon in Hollywood, California. This beautiful club has all the style with half the pretension you’ll find in most higher-end nightclubs. Winged angels float around the club while the likes of John Digweed, Freestylers and Sasha funk up partiers with hot beats on a crisp-clear sound system. Known previously as The Palace, the space used to host rock greats like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Nirvana, but has been revamped in an avant-garde style home to all kinds of live events, notably banging electronic dance parties.

Space Miami

Okay, back to Miami just once more. Nothing beats an outdoor party and Space Miami offers a partier’s paradise. With 24-hour bar service, an outdoor party terrace and music events ranging from hip hop to techno ravers and clubbers alike come together to celebrate the beautiful bodies, weather and music of Miami. Pretty much anyone who’s anyone in the DJ world has spun the decks at Space Miami, include Sasha, Deep Dish and Carl Cox. Voted DJ Mag’s top US nightclub, this prime party space is a must-visit on your club destination list.

Tao Nightclub

Head to party central Las Vegas’s Tao Nightclub for a serious party. This place gets packed—all 10,000 square feet of it. While the décor nearly borders on kitsch it’s a swanky place for celebrity spotting, great music and fun times. Paul Van Dyk, among many others, pump out great beats while the crowd continues on well into the early hours.

Vanguard

Last on our list, but certainly not the least of the best, is Vanguard in Los Angeles, California. Think big party, and then triple that and you’ll see Vanguard. This 20,000 square foot space gets packed on big club nights. Featuring the best sound and lighting it’s an all out free for all on the dance floor when acts like Afrika Bambaataa and Carl Cox roll into town.

While this barely tips the iceberg of amazing nightclubs throughout America, we hope we’ve given you some inspiration to do a little evening exploring during your next big-city visit. While smaller venues can offer a more comfortable experience, there’s something about a huge dance party that can keep a person going for weeks afterwards, well after sleeping off the hangover first Be safe, get in line and party hard!

Hip Hop and R&B have, without question, been the dominant music genre of the 2000s in bars and nightclubs around the world. Approximately 40% of number one hits throughout this period have either been hip hop or RnB, illustrating how a once-obscure music genre can dominate the mainstream music charts for over a decade, and even create a unique youth culture with dozens of subcultures.

The father of hip hop culture is DJ Afrika Bambaataa, who forged the five pillars of hip hop culture during the ‘70s: DJing, MCing, break dancing, graffiti, and knowledge. Beat boxing, an arguably late edition to these pillars, was not originally deemed to be an integral part of hip hop culture, but many now consider it as a defining item of the culture.

Originating from the Bronx, hip hop culture is most identifiable with African Americans, but has been adopted by all ethnicities both in the USA and around the world, largely due to the contribution of hip hop groups such as RUN DMC and Public Enemy, as well as hip hop music icons such as Grand Master Flash during the late 80’s. Massive contributions to hip hop music and culture were also made by notable break dance crews including the Rock Steady Crew, New York Breakers, as well as the Kool DJ Herc, who pioneered the hip style of DJing and turntablism, which is still used today.

Due to the explicit language and controversial topics that hip hop music addressed, conservative groups moved to censor hip hop music and artists on the basis that that they glorified drugs and violence. If anything, this only increased the popularity of the hip hop artists they tried to regulate, and reinforced existing prejudices that proponents of hip hop music and culture had against censorship from the police and government.

Hip hop music and culture is so popular that TIME magazine published an article “Hip Hop is the Most Important Youth Culture on the Planet,” highlighting how every country has its own brand and take on hip hop music and culture. Hip hop and R&B are set to only grow, as a never ending line-up of artists showcase their skills around the world and gradually develop the genre into a more sophisticated form of music.

Oh college, the time in your life that you’ll likely party the hardest. Unfortunately, most frats don’t have the luxury of having a fraternity brother who DJs or the funds to hire a DJ for every event or party they throw.

So what do you do? DJing via your iPod or iTunes is very amateurish these days, because nobody wants gaps between music while they’re dancing, partying, and drinking. Also, nothing is more of a buzzkill than people messing around and changing songs every 30 seconds throughout the entire night. The solution? Pre-recorded DJ mixes!

These mixes are well-thought out playlists from pro Club DJs who merge songs together seamlessly. You might not even notice when some songs transition into others, and it’ll blow everyone’s mind silly. This will keep your party rolling and the kegs draining swiftly.

Most DJs today will have their mixes available online for free as a way to self-promote themselves, so if you have a favorite DJ, then Google his or her name now! Otherwise, browse through our selection of DJ music before your party begins and grab some mixes that you can vibe with. We specialize in Top 40, electro, and dance music, similar to what you’ll hear when you go out to the clubs.

You can either download them to your computer (which I recommend, just in case the internet is slow or cuts out), or stream them off our site.

Be prepared to throw the highest energy dance party your university has seen! Why go out clubbing when you can throw the same party as if the DJ was live in your house or dorm? Pick up a few low-budget lights like the American DJ Vertigo Tri LED Powered Effect Light or American DJ Color Burst LED 4 Pixel Bank LED Color Bar and you’ll throw a party with an experience that will have people raving for more.

The recent release of the CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900 have bundled everything you could want into a fairly compact, attractive system, taking it to a whole new level beyond their also great CDJ-1000MK3’s. Perhaps the best attribute of the CDJ-2000’s is its multimedia input and storage capabilities. Forget the laptop at home, the CDJ-2000 features ports to access all your MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF audio files from USB, CD, DVD and even SD cards. Instead of advertising your undying reliance on Apple, you can now use the controller and screens on the decks to access your entire music library—and you can spend more time connecting with your audience.

Pioneer’s decks come with their standard rekordbox™1 music management, and Needle Search which allows you to pick up anywhere in a track. While many DJ’s still prefer to use the trusty Technics SL-DZ1200, which are undoubtedly top of the line digital turntables, you can’t beat the fact that with the CDJ-2000’s everything is literally right at your fingertips—with button and screen lighting you’ll have no problem performing in even the dingiest of dungeons.

Technics SL-DZ1200 digital turntables are perhaps more user friendly and easier to transition to if you’ve been using vinyl. While nothing can beat the feel of wax beneath the fingertips, digital allows for easier transportation with smaller portable media files that stand the test of time—unless you’ve bought a laptop prone to meltdown. These turntables are still responsive for scratching with the same torque as the original 1200’s, and you can run everything from a removable SD card. There’s something timeless about Technics tables—while the Pioneer CDJ’s might offer more in terms of technology you can’t beat the style, sound and simplicity of Technics.

Another excellent set of digital decks are the Numark V7 with Serato ITCH software, a new take on the NS7’s. These decks combine the feel of seven inch vinyl on a more responsive platter. Scratch the vinyl, or used the grooved sections around the vinyl. The V7’s feature adjustable torque for the feel you want and they also feature the Strip Search virtual needle drop, giving DJ’s hands on control for quicker track point locating. These are MIDI controlled decks, and are compatible with different MIDI software.

For those who still like to kick it old school Vestax has released their new vinyl turntable, the PDX-3000MKII. Vestax has upgraded many features on these decks, including a more powerful direct drive DC motor which reaches a constant speed rate within half a second from pushing the start button. The PDX-3000MKII also has increased the balance between the platter weight and rotary inertia movement, allowing DJ’s more control over their vinyl. If you can’t get past that beautiful feeling of vinyl beneath your fingertips but need an upgrade check these out.

It’s still hard to beat the Technics analog turntables. Technics are the granddaddy of digital drive, and their best turntable on the market right now is the newer SL-1210M5G. These have stepped it up from previous models with a digital pitch control, an improved tone arm for skip resistance and an easy to adjust breaking speed.

Mixers

Rane is now shipping their new Sixty-Eight mixer, the first compatible with Scratch Live that allows for two computers to be connected at the same time. The use of USB ports allows for easy hookup of up to four virtual decks, and makes it much easier for switching DJ’s. This mixer will likely be the new club standard, and DJ’s will be able to tag team seamlessly throughout an event. The Sixty-Eight also features a new 3 band EQ with high/low frequency controlled filter sweep. There are also two microphone inputs on this mixer.

Numark’s new X7 mixer follows the same idea as Rane’s Sixty-Eight mixer, on a smaller scale. The X7 allows for easy USB cable hookup, and two USB interfaces to hook up two computers, making it seamless to tag team or switch DJ’s. You can even sync tempo between them.

Pioneer’s new CDJ-2000/900 stablemate the DJM-2000, while not as versatile as Rane’s Sixty-Eight, offers the world’s first 5.8 inch Full Color Multi Touch Display, with a choice of Frequency Mix, Sidechain Remix and MIDI allow for you to scroll through effects instantly for a seamless production. The Instant Effects and Beat Effects are great for live mixing and sampling.

New Digital Controller

Another amazing invention soon to hit the market is Quickswitch, a turntable controller featuring over 120 different programmable buttons. You can wrap Quickswitch right around your decks, allowing you to control your computer programs with MIDI or HOT KEY macros. It seems as though it’s time for DJ’s to stop hiding behind their laptops—new technology screams for better connection with your decks and the crowd.

Headphones

While headphones may be the least thought about purchase in some DJ’s’ arsenals they can be the most important. Getting something that has clear sound, swivels and cancels out exterior noise will help you keep your tracks in line. Don’t fool yourself with flashy colors.

Pioneer’s HDJ-2000 headphones feature high fidelity sound and a snug fit so you can get into your music without worrying about losing your cans. The housing turns 90 degrees and they also feature a mono/stereo switch so you can monitor your sound even while listening through one phone.

Sony’s more budget friendly MDR-V700DJ headphones feature swivel and reversible earcups with an auto return swivel mechanism, great durability and comfort. These headphones also contain Neodymium magnets which produce more energy than other types like aluminum or ferrite. They sound great and are not bulky.

Technics RP-DH1200 DJ Headphones are another great purchase for the professional DJ. They deliver high quality sound even at high volumes, and feature folding swing arms. While arguably not as comfortable as Pioneer’s or Sony’s these headphones will help you get your sound where it needs to go.

Conclusion

As we ascend—or as some believe, descend—into the world of digital, analog may slowly fade. Consumers are looking for compact designs with efficient hardware and compatible software. We’re likely to see some amazing new constructions come out of the works in the next few years along the lines of Pioneer’s CDJ-2000’s—an all in one bundle.

While it’s hard to say goodbye altogether to analog, the easier track maintenance and portability of digital makes it easier for traveling DJs, and with the ability to control everything right from the decks, DJ’s will have more opportunity to connect with their audiences. Hands up to that!
