<p>I love fall. The colors are vibrant and fun, the air smells like cinnamon and nutmeg and the best part are the pumpkins. I would say the cooler weather plays a part in it too, but I live in Houston, so that would be a lie. However, last summer while I was touring <a href="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/2017/10/visiting-the-pioneer-womans-lodge-also-known-as-that-time-i-fan-girled-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Pioneer Woman&#8217;s lodge</a> &#8211; yes&#8230; yes.. THAT lodge &#8211; I saw adorable wildflower painted craft pumpkins chilling in her supply closet and I fell in love with them.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the pumpkins that were at the Pioneer Woman&#8217;s Lodge:</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-10650" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/the-pioneer-woman-pumpkin.jpg" alt="the pioneer woman pumpkin" width="550" height="644" data-wp-pid="10650" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/the-pioneer-woman-pumpkin.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/the-pioneer-woman-pumpkin-256x300.jpg 256w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" /></p>
<p>Cute right? And yes, that&#8217;s a Mackenzie-Child&#8217;s cake plate just hanging out next to them as if I wouldn&#8217;t drool on it out in the open like that&#8230;.&nbsp; There was also a huge storage bin full of chocolate baking chips. I should have just moved right into the Lodge at that moment but I didn&#8217;t have the guts. Next time, I&#8217;m taking my luggage and dogs.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/2017/10/visiting-the-pioneer-womans-lodge-also-known-as-that-time-i-fan-girled-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">If you want to read about our trip to the Lodge, click here.</a></p>
<p>I knew that making these pumpkins would be on my crafty to-do for this fall. I started with just one pumpkin, one of the carvable craft pumpkins from the hobby store.&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10652" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/craft-pumpkin-for-painting.jpg" alt="craft pumpkin for painting" width="650" height="488" data-wp-pid="10652" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/craft-pumpkin-for-painting.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/craft-pumpkin-for-painting-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would sit and paint a flower or two whenever I had some free time. It wound up being a really fun project because I could pick it up when I had a minute and then put it back on the shelf when I needed to do something else.&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10653" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painted-wildflower-pumpkin.jpg" alt="painted wildflower pumpkin" width="650" height="469" data-wp-pid="10653" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painted-wildflower-pumpkin.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painted-wildflower-pumpkin-300x216.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>I do love how they turned out but I know what some of you are going to say;</p>
<p><em> &#8220;But I don&#8217;t know how to paint flowers!&#8221;</em></p>
<p>I get it but painting flowers are actually very easy and practicing is so much fun. Flowers are great items to paint if you&#8217;re not a painter because there are so many combinations, colors and types of flowers that it&#8217;s pretty hard to mess it up.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you look at the pumpkins from the Lodge, you&#8217;ll see that one is all sunflowers. So today let me walk you through how to paint a simple sunflower that looks like you spent a ton of time on it.&nbsp; Add a few green leaves and vines and you&#8217;ll have your own cute sunflower pumpkin.</p>
<h3>How to paint a sunflower:</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10654 size-full" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower.jpg" alt="how to paint a sunflower" width="650" height="488" data-wp-pid="10654" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p><strong>Step 1</strong> &#8211; pick two similar colors for the petals of the sunflower. I picked a yellow and an orange. Using an angled brush, put one color on one side of the brush and the other color on the opposite side.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10655 size-large" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-an-easy-sunflower-1024x653.jpg" alt="how to paint an easy sunflower" width="1024" height="653" data-wp-pid="10655"></p>
<p><strong>Step 2</strong> &#8211; The pointed side of the brush will be at the top of the petal. Put the brush at the top and pull down in a bit of an arc, putting pressure on the brush as you pull down. Pick up your brush and place it back at the top of the petal, doing the same thing but arcing the opposite direction to make a complete petal shape. Fill in the middle lightly with the paint that is already on the brush.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you need help making the round shape of the flower, draw a large circle with a pencil and a smaller circle in the exact middle of it. The outer circle will be your guide for the outside edges of the petals and the bottom of the pencil should reach into the middle circle. When your flower is done, erase the pencil.&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10656 size-large" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower-easy-1024x768.jpg" alt="how to paint a sunflower easy fast" width="1024" height="768" data-wp-pid="10656"></p>
<p>The circle shape doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect because extremely perfect flowers are very rare.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10657" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower-easy-fast.jpg" alt="how to paint a sunflower easy fast" width="650" height="488" data-wp-pid="10657" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower-easy-fast.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/how-to-paint-a-sunflower-easy-fast-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p><strong>Step 3</strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Make the middle of the flower. I like to mix two shades of brown together to do this. Then place your angled brush, the same one will work, in the middle of the flower shape. Hold one side of the brush bristles in place at the middle of the flower and swirl the other edge around to make a perfect circle.&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10658 size-large" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painting-sunflowers-1024x768.jpg" alt="learn to paint sunflower" width="1024" height="768" data-wp-pid="10658"></p>
<p><strong>Step 4</strong> &#8211; Take the darkest brown paint you have and using the opposite end of the paint brush, dab little circles of dark brown paint into the still wet paint in the middle of the flower. You can do it all over the middle or just a circle of dots around the outside edge of the middle of the flower.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10659" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painting-sunflowers-step-by-step.jpg" alt="painting sunflowers step by step" width="650" height="488" data-wp-pid="10659" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painting-sunflowers-step-by-step.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/painting-sunflowers-step-by-step-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy and fast! The best news is that anyone can do it!&nbsp;</p>
<p>You still have time to make these wildflower pumpkins or <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/226798531218663031/">Pin this idea to use next fall</a>!&nbsp;</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-10660" src="http://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/The-pioneer-woman-lodge-inspired-pumpkin.jpg" alt="The pioneer woman lodge inspired pumpkin" width="650" height="890" data-wp-pid="10660" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/The-pioneer-woman-lodge-inspired-pumpkin.jpg 650w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/The-pioneer-woman-lodge-inspired-pumpkin-219x300.jpg 219w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>After you are done painting the pumpkin, I recommend spraying it with the <a href="http://amzn.to/2hzgXV4">spray paint polycrylic</a> to keep the paint from scratching when it&#8217;s in storage.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Have fun crafting!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hi friends. I haven&#8217;t posted any new blogs in years. Where have I been? I&#8217;ve been recovering from abuse. I&#8217;ve shared about it briefly before. If you missed that post, I grew up in an abusive home and then continued the cycle of abuse into a very abusive marriage. A few years ago, everything crumbled to pieces and in that destruction, I had to face some very hard truths about how I was raised and the truth of my marriage. </p>
<p>I am still fighting to come out on the other side of that. The new joke that I told myself this week is that I got PTSD as a wedding gift. And hopefully, I&#8217;m giving myself healing as a divorce gift. </p>
<p>But today, almost three years since my separation, I want to share a few simple ways how you can support someone leaving an abusive relationship. These are all things that have been done for me that have continued to make a huge impact in my life. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Support Someone Leaving an Abusive Relationship</h2>
<p><strong>Help them get new bedding &#8211; </strong>This might seem silly but they need a safe place to rest. If they shared their current bedding with the partner that abused them, give them a fresh slate. Rest will be vital to their healing. Sleep will be hard and they will find themselves to be more exhausted than normal. </p>
<p><em>New bedding will remove smells and harmful memories while also helping them feel loved and cared for safely and positively</em>. If possible, also consider helping change some of the room decorations to make it their own space and fully remove any reminders of the person who harmed them. </p>
<p><strong>Install video cameras at their home or apartment &#8211; </strong>Video cameras today are easy to purchase and even easier to install. But for someone who is overwhelmed with a thousand things on their plate and is struggling with feeling unsafe, doing this for them will help. If you&#8217;re not handy, ask your friend group for someone who would be willing to go help install cameras. There are good people in the world who will gladly step up, they just need to know that you need their help. </p>
<p><em>And as a single parent, having cameras also helps me know that my kids are safe when I&#8217;m not able to be home. </em></p>
<p><strong>Participate in Random Porch Drop-offs</strong> &#8211; Abuse isolates you. The first year, I was largely alone simply because my network of friends and family had been cut-off. I wasn&#8217;t used to having people in my home and the pressure to pick up or clean if someone was coming over was too much in an already pushed-to-my-limits state. Slowly as people started to learn that we were divorcing because of abuse, things started appearing on my porch. Some nights it would be a casserole, sometimes a loaf of bread (or 7), one day it was fuel stabilizer that I needed, and every now and then a case of Dr. Pepper gets dropped off. Things just appear. And it lifts my soul so much. Not only do I know people are thinking of me and supporting me, it removes the pressure to entertain or even talk to people on the rough days. </p>
<p><em>If you know someone in your community is struggling, leaving abuse, or even just through regular life issues, dropping off small things on their porch sends a powerful message without the pressure of entertaining guests. </em></p>
<p><strong>Most Importantly, Listen to them &#8211; </strong>Supporting people with gifts and things is extremely helpful but nothing will take the place of someone who simply listens. Don&#8217;t try to offer advice unless you yourself have left abusive relationships. <em>Just listen</em>. Let them know what hours you are free and when they can call. If you&#8217;re available to chat at 3am when they&#8217;re awake and scared with nightmares, let them know. Occasionally I get texts at 3am when my friends happen to wake up, checking to see if I&#8217;m up and need to talk since I struggle to sleep. </p>
<p>People who leave abuse will sometimes have bad memories playing in loops. They tell the same stories over and over. It&#8217;s a way they process the memories. And the best way to get the memories playing on repeat to stop is to have someone listen to the story. Whether they tell you that story 1 time or 5 times, just listen and offer empathy and sorrow for what they endured. <em>They don&#8217;t need you to fix it, they just need you to listen. </em></p>
<p><strong>If you are looking for gift ideas or products you can purchase to support them</strong>, <a href="https://amzn.to/3XtBLhD">here is an easy list of ideas. </a></p>
<p><em>The best gift you can give to someone leaving abuse is simply your presence and your care. </em></p>
<p>Thank you to all who have supported and loved me, you have meant the world to me. </p>

<p>Part of me believes that watermelons were created to off-set the oppressive heat of summer. Do you agree? <em>Watermelon is for summer.</em> That&#8217;s why today I&#8217;m sharing this super cute DIY Summer craft with you &#8211; Painted Watermelon bags or pouches.</p>
<p>This is a great craft idea for the teens hanging out at your house occasionally moaning, &#8220;I&#8217;m sooooo bored&#8221; while simultaneously emptying your pantry of everything edible. </p>
<p><em>This is also an easy craft to make while you hide away in the air conditioning.</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Let&#8217;s get started on these DIY Watermelon Bags</h2>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="526" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Fabric-paint-crafts.jpg" alt="fabric paint craft" class="wp-image-12860" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Fabric-paint-crafts.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Fabric-paint-crafts-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p><strong>You will need:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Fabric Paint.</strong> <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Ink (opens in a new tab)" href="https://amzn.to/2XvaNs0" target="_blank">Fabric Creations Soft Fabric Ink</a> is my personal favorite and you can find it on the list of <a href="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/best-craft-products/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="my top craft supplies (opens in a new tab)">my top craft supplies</a>. </p>
<p><strong>White tote bags or pouches. &nbsp;</strong>I picked up these bag in a pack of three from Michael&#8217;s on one of my many trips there. Follow me on Instagram and I&#8217;ll take you shopping with me when I go. <a href="https://amzn.to/2MYtoIV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="You can find something similar on Amazon here. (opens in a new tab)">You can find something similar on Amazon here. </a></p>
<p><strong>Paint Brushes. </strong> Use your favorite paint brushes, you don&#8217;t have to have anything specific. I&#8217;m a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="nylon / taklon (opens in a new tab)" href="https://amzn.to/2IYEjNv" target="_blank">nylon / taklon</a> type girl myself. </p>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="526" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/fabric-paint-on-tote-bag-craft-idea.jpg" alt="watermelon craft" class="wp-image-12861" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/fabric-paint-on-tote-bag-craft-idea.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/fabric-paint-on-tote-bag-craft-idea-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p>Step one is simple. Paint white fabric paint across the middle of the bag. You want to cover about half of the bag with white. You can&#8217;t mess this step up (well, I probably could) but don&#8217;t worry too much about it. </p>
<p>Next, we&#8217;re going to start adding the red paint to make the top part of the watermelon. First though we need to add in some white to the red paint. Don&#8217;t dilute all of your red paint with the white, just pull a bit of each color to one side and mix it together.</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="578" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/summer-craft-project-watermelon-tote.jpg" alt="DIY watermelon tote bag" class="wp-image-12862" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/summer-craft-project-watermelon-tote.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/summer-craft-project-watermelon-tote-300x248.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p>Gently start blending the pink color you just created into the white half way up the bag. Keep going up on the bag, adding more red into your mix as you go.</p>
<p>Just swipe from one side of the bag to the other in long strokes. </p>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="611" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Watermelon-Craft-Project-Ideas.jpg" alt="DIY tote bag" class="wp-image-12863" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Watermelon-Craft-Project-Ideas.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Watermelon-Craft-Project-Ideas-300x262.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p>Eventually you&#8217;ll reach the top with your red mix that is mostly red. Using a clean paint brush, blend any areas that aren&#8217;t blended very well starting at the bottom and going up. </p>
<p>You want an ombre look. If you&#8217;re nervous to try it, start on a sheet of paper to practice before moving to your fabric bag. </p>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="525" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Summer-Craft-Watermelon-Tote-Bag.jpg" alt="watermelon ideas" class="wp-image-12864" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Summer-Craft-Watermelon-Tote-Bag.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DIY-Summer-Craft-Watermelon-Tote-Bag-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p>Next you&#8217;re going to paint the bottom green, mixing it into the bottom of the white color that you put on in the very first step.</p>
<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="535" src="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Watermelon-Print-Bag-Fun-tote-bag-for-summer.jpg" alt="diy watermelon ideas" class="wp-image-12865" srcset="https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Watermelon-Print-Bag-Fun-tote-bag-for-summer.jpg 700w, https://www.clumsycrafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Watermelon-Print-Bag-Fun-tote-bag-for-summer-300x229.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>
<p>Finally use a small paint brush to make watermelon seeds. I also followed up with a tiny white accent on each watermelon seed. This is up to you. </p>
<p>Let this side dry and then flip over and repeat on the other side. Or you could leave the other side blank and personalize it using HTV vinyl.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll love how cute this bag turns out. </p>
