In fact, the average American receives 41 pounds of junk mail each year. And if you’re honest with yourself, how much of your 41 pounds consists of catalogs you like to thumb through even though Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Eddie Bauer have perfectly good web sites where you can view the same content? Uh huh, that’s what I thought.

I recently watched the Overbrook Foundation’s environmental director Daniel Katz on Billy Moyers’ Journal discuss one of the easiest ways to seriously cut down on your junk mail–Catalog Choice.

Even though we at Clutter Love believe that a reasonable amount of clutter in your home proves only that you are not a Real Simple-reading cyborg, we do believe you should take some steps to reduce your environmental impact. And in this case, we aren’t too proud to shame you because it couldn’t be easier to stop most of your junk mail–saving you time and lessening your environmental impact–for FREE.  It’s as easy as signing up for Catalog Choice, an online service that will virtually eliminate your junk mail.

You can either contact the Direct Marketing Association and request the “do not mail” postcard (free), pay 5$ to make the request online, or sign up for Catalog Choice to handle it all for you.

Can you believe the DMA actually makes you pay to get on their do not mail list? Talk about nerve.
