Prediction Recap: Wrong again.  When I Was Your Man dropped to #3.  Talk about that more when we get to it. However, there is important news.

HARLEM SHAKE ISN’T IN THE TOP 10!!!!!  OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE ON THE POP CHARTS IS OVER!!!

Ok, now to the top 10:

#10: Heart Attack – Demi Lovato (Last Week: 15 Total Weeks in the hot 100: 7)

I honestly don’t know what to think of this song. Part of me wants to say that it’s shouty and annoying, but another part of me things it’s a good song that is thumbing its nose against a love that she knows will be toxic in the end. I’ll give it another week for it to sink in on me.

#9: Started From The Bottom – Drake (Last Week: 9 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 10

I’m just getting sick of yet another brag track in the top 10. Hopefully this will go away by next week, or at the very least go downward.

#8: Feel This Moment – Pitbull feat. Christina Aguilera (Last Week: 10 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 12)

One of the few Pitbull songs that I really like. This and Give Me Everything I put on my phone and listen to when I am on the bus when I go to school. This is the type of song that gets me going while I’m reading about Television Studies and how The Cosby Show was bad because it didn’t reflect what was truly going on in the country. I’d rather have Pitbull over that nonsense.  Dolly!

#7: Mirrors – Justin Timberlake (Last Week: 12 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 9)

Mirrors finally cracks the top 10. JT is doing what worked for him with Suit and Tie, but without the big band. I still enjoy it though. This one needs another week to settle in with me, but like Heart Attack, I think it’ll stick for a bit.

#6: Suit and Tie – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z (Last Week: 5 Total weeks in the Hot 100: 14)

A good companion with Mirrors. It’s interesting to see a singer have two songs in the top 10 that have him as the lead instead of being the lead on one and being a featured guest. Sadly, it’s on the downswing, so we’ll have to say goodbye to it for now, but it’ll definitely get a good spot in the year end list.

#5: Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton (Last Week: 7 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 10)

A nice jump due to more exposure and the debut of the new video. MSN.com had an article about it and whereas Thrift Shop was set in a thrift shop, Can’t Hold Us has the cinematic feel to it. The song is also amazing and much better than Thrift shop. For all the game show fans out there, he references Bob Barker and Plinko. Money!

4: Stay – Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko (Last week #4 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 10)

Go away Mikky Ekko.  Please, go away. I just hope this song goes away soon, but it’s not since it’s one of the songs that is really moving Rihanna’s concert sales, since it’s usually her first encore, according to Mediocre Music TV columnist Wences Acosta who went to her concert this past weekend.

#3: When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars (Last Week: 1 Total Weeks in the Hot 100: 17)

Odd to see this drop to 3 after clawing its way to #1. I would also like to think the bigger his hairstyle gets in the video, the better the song.  Grenade, It Will Rain and this are proof of that. I never really did talk about the video, but I love how it took the opening of those 60s musicals and turned it into a video. It really is an impressive feat with such antiquated big box cameras and purposefully out of focus style at the forefront.  I still love it.

#2: Thrift Shop – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz (Last Week: 2 total weeks in the hot 100: 28) 

A half a year in the hot 100, with the majority of that being in the top 10. If this song isn’t in the top 5 come years end, I’ll be amazed. BTW, I need to correct the Rap Critic when it comes to the “Skeet Blanket” line. Usually in Washington, especially in the eastern side, they do a lot of skeet shooting and those skeets are wrapped up in these blankets to assure they aren’t damaged during travel.

#1: Just Give Me A Reason – P!nk feat. Nate Ruess (Last Week: 3 Total Weeks in the hot 100: 9)

The best duet in years gets to #1. I’ve always loved P!nk, even when I shyed away from liking anything after the year 1990, aside from certain indie bands. I also love Nate Ruess’s voice, which is what is needed when two people who sing about wanting a second chance with each other want. It’s not lifeless like Stay and it isn’t pretentious as Stay either. It comes off as really honest. I hope this sticks around for awhile.

Prediction: P!nk stays up top, Psy’s Gentleman will crack the top 10 in a big way (Note: it Hotshotted to #12 this week), and Drake finally gets taken off the top 10.

Prediction Recap: Dead Wrong. Mirrors is still floundering between 20-11 and Suit and Tie dropped in position. Let’s see if I get it right next week.

#10. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons (Last Week #7 Total Weeks in the top 100: 32)…..Not quite. Apparently this is #11 and Billboard made a mistake with the original printing of the list. Which is a shame because….

#10. Feel This Moment – Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera

I’d honestly have Radioactive as #10 instead of this if I had to choose. The story behind Radioactive pushes it above of Pitbull doing the same thing that he did in International Love, but with someone who didn’t beat up Rihanna and is a much better singer.

 #9. Started From The Bottom – Drake (Last Week #8 Total Weeks in the top 100: 9)

Drake, Who Ya Crappin? You didn’t start from the bottom. You’re not hard. You’re just a spoiled rich kid who got famous from Degrassi and your rapping overall is nothing more than generic fare from Young Money.

#8. Cruise – Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly (Re-Entry)

This baffles me. Not only did this song get this high, it was originally off the charts for weeks before making it back on in remix form with Nelly. The original version was ok, but the new background track and Nelly’s addition makes it better.

#7. Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton (Last Week: 15 Total weeks in the top 100: 28)

This is another good song. I’m now hoping (more wishful thinking) that we can get Same Love in the top 10, but it won’t happen because it involves a white rapper talking about how same-sex marriage should be legalized. Either way, this song is just plain awesome, even better than Thrift Shop. Seek it out. You’ll be much better for it.

#6. Harlem Shake – Baauer (Last week: Nobody cares Total…ah screw it.)

Meme Garbage. I’m just thankful that it no longer has a stranglehold on the YouTube #1 spot, which is being added to how Billboard makes its lists. If we’re lucky, it’ll drop out of the top 10 next week and replaced by Fandango.

#5. Suit and Tie – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z (Last Week: 3 Total Weeks in the top 100: 13)

Yeah, my prediction went over like a lead balloon. I think it’s safe to say that Suit and Tie peaked last week.  If I were to have one problem with the song,  it’s the Jay-Z rap in the middle seems a little lacking.  Either way, still good.

#4. Stay – Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko (Last Week: 6 Total Weeks in the top 100: 9)

Ok. Now I’m just getting tired of this song and the problem is the lifelessness that is Mikky Ekko. Rihanna is fine and turns in a good performance albeit not as good as Diamonds or We Found Love, but she is brought down by someone who ripped off the fro of Art Garfunkel and all the singing talents of Glenn Meideros without the latin charm of his.  He is a whining simpleton and needs to go.

#3. Give Me A Reason – P!nk feat. Nate Ruess (Last week: 5 Total Weeks in the top 100: 8)

Everything Stay should have been. You have Pink who is a fantastic singer, teamed up with Nate Ruess from fun. and put them together in what has to be one of the best love ballad duets since Sonny and Cher. This has the potential to be #1 in a couple of weeks.

#2. Thrift Shop – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz (Last Week: 1 Total Weeks in the top 100: 27)

The second time he got bumped from the #1 slot, but to a song that’s just as good as Thrift Shop. Needless to say, with having two songs in the top 10 on his own label and independently, he really shook things up in 2013. I fully expect this song to be one of the biggest songs of 2013 when the Top 100 list comes out in December. He had 6 weeks at #1, and has been either 1 or 2 since late January.  That’s staying power.

#1. When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars (Last week: 2 Total Weeks in the top 100: 16)

Bruno did it. Pushed a really damned good piano ballad through and made it #1 under the pressure of pure crap in Harlem Shake and the little rap song that could in Thrift Shop. I will say that if Billboard wasn’t taking into account YouTube Data, he would have been #1 sooner, maybe in mid-March.

Prediction: Bruno will hold it for another week before P!nk or Macklemore takes it to kick of May.

Going back to the days where men were men…ok ok ok, political correctness….when people thought that being pelted with a basketball and called words that would make your grandmothers faint was acceptable, you had some of that same sort of behavior on reality shows, such as eating rats, throwing chairs across the room when it was revealed that you had genital warts, and being cursed out by Susan Hawk. Nowadays, throwing a ball at someone’s head, unless you’re playing Extreme Dodgeball, means your dismissal, and undoubtedly the countless lawsuits that will be going your way. I usually just resolved the conflict with a middle finger and walked in the opposite direction.

Now most people, when they saw the footage that caused Rutgers Men’s Athletic Basketball Coach Mike Rice to be fired, were shocked and taken aback. ‘This person should be fired! How dare he! He’s educating the children of America!’ My opinion for those people who are believeing that – you’re a dope. Not just a dope, but a dope who has their head planted into the sand like a flamingo.

Now before I go on, I’m not condoning the behavior of Mike Rice for one second. That’s another argument for another time, and that’s not what the focus of this article is.

The focus of the article is the videotape that got him canned. If you think that this is the worst thing ever on the face of the earth, you’re sadly disillusioned. As a matter of fact, you’re probably going to see worse tonight in the comfort of your very own home. Most people like the ‘drama’ from the reality shows, so if you’re a Real Housewife fan, than you’ve seen much worse than the Rutgers Men’s Basketball tape. You could same the same for Gordon Ramsay on Hell’s Kitchen, for that matter. Granted, the contestants are competing for a once in a lifetime job, but couldn’t you also say that for the men’s basketball program? These are 15-20 kids who are competing for millions of dollars and being put through various tortures to get it. Sound familiar?

How much cursing do you hear bleeped out in a Gordon Ramsay show? Compare it to the Rutgers tape. There is more cursing and worse behavior from both Ramsay and the contestants. On April 2nd’s episode, You have contestant Nedra Harris have more of a pirate mouth than Bluebeard on his worst day, and the amount of bleeps alone could be worse than that tape. And don’t get me started on Gordon himself, whether it’s throwing scalding food or hot kitchen accessories. And it’s not just Gordon. You watch the Housewives in 7-9 hour marathon sessions of adult behavior, complete with fighting and tossing of objects like they are in an Olympic Volleyball match. You certainy don’t watch Here Comes Honey Boo Boo for the educational material. And then there’s Jackass, Numbnuts, and Buckwild – that show that just had a member of the cast remove himself from the gene pool – who’s behavior, attitude and statements on inequality make the basketball tape look like a Boy Scout Retreat.

But here’s the kicker. For the people who say that ‘this is an educator who should know better’; maybe he should, but at least he is talking to 18-22 year olds who should, by this time, have the cognition to know what is right and what is wrong. At least these lessons are coming towards people who have had life experiences. Housewives, Kitchen, Buckwild, et al. are coming to you unfiltered and uncensored through YOUR TELEVISION SET AT ANY AND ALL HOURS OF THE DAY. So while you are railing against someone not doing their job, you, the parent are not doing yours because you are exposing your children to things ten times worse than what Mike Rice did. And I know you’re not doing your job because these, the highest rated shows on tv for their respective evenings, are molding your kids’ minds when they are 8, 6, 4…heck, however old they are when you allow them to watch it unsupervised.

So I’m calling out everyone who are allowing worse in their homes. If you’re THAT concerned about how your kids are going to wind up, then you need to start monitoring what they have been watching, as the behaviors and mannerisms with the ‘glamification’ of what they are viewing could be a factor on how they appear on a different show that will be airing on Saturday night after the NCAA Semi-Finals. It’s called COPS.

10: The Way – Ariana Garnde feat. Mac Miller HOT SHOT DEBUT!

(Hot Shot Debut: When a single debuts at a position higher than 20.)

While I enjoy the fact that this is a romantic love song that actually sounds like both of the singers mean what they say, it just feels like I’ve heard this song before back when I was in middle school in the late 90s. The piano and the clapping and the drum machine in the background reminds me of something Brandy or Mariah Carey would have produced back in the day. Will this stick around next week? I don’t think it will, especially since Justin Timberlake’s got Mirrors at #11.

9: Feel This Moment – Pitbull feat. Christina Aguilera (Last Week: 8 Weeks in the Top 100: 10)

Still a very fun song to listen to, even though it can tend to be a polarizing song. If you don’t like Pitbull and his rapping about he’s done so much and all of that, then you won’t be into this song, besides for Christina’s chorus, which is just flat out amazing.

8: Started From The Bottom – Drake (Last Week: 7 Total weeks in the top 100: 8)

Yet another song about how amazing Drake is. They Know, No Lie, and every single other song he does just makes us remember that he was practically handed fame thanks to Degrassi and him already being rich enough to buy into Young Money. This song is a waste.

7: Radioactive – Imagine Dragons (Last Week: 15 Total Weeks in the Top 100: 31)

If WWE ever wanted to adopt this song for a promo about the huge young stars they have in Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Antonio Cesaro and others, it would be amazing. This song just breathes and exhudes emotion. I also recommend the music video where you see Muppets fighting and Lou Diamond Phillips acting as the badass crime lord. Get this song, it is amazing.

6: Stay – Rihanna Feat. Mikky Ekko (Last week: 5 Total Weeks in the top 100: 8)

Still bland and as boring as ever. There’s no life to this and is just there so that we don’t have another unsexy “sexy” song of Rihanna’s plaguing the top 10 like last year with “Where Have You Been”.

I must admit, I should have bought P!nk’s latest CD , The Truth About Love, today at the store because this song and the rest of her stuff on the CD that has either hit or I’ve heard elsewhere is amazing, such as Blow Me (One Last Kiss) and Try.

4: Harlem Shake – Baauer (Last Week: 2 total undeserved weeks in the top 100: 7)

This “song” will die soon. The stupid craze will die soon and we can all forget about this pile of trash.

3: Suit & Tie – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z (Last week: 3 Total Weeks in the top 100: 12)

I honestly thought this would be Justin’s week to go to #1. I guess that I was mistaken. Still one of his best songs that he’s ever come out with.  Even when we have the hip-hop verse, it’s still well done by Jay-Z. Proof that he is one of the best rappers of all time. Still putting out quality work when others of his time have gave up (looking at you Ice Cube).

2: When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars (Last Week: 4 Total Weeks in the top 100: 15)

This might end up being Bruno’s 2013 iteration of “It Will Rain” in the fact it’s a really good song, but won’t reach #1 because the other song is much more popular. In 2011, it was Diamonds by Rihanna.

1: Thrift Shop – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (Last week: 1[6th week at Number 1] Total weeks in the top 100: 26)

Is there no stopping Macklemore? 6 total weeks at #1 and hasn’t dipped below #3 since late January. If this song doesn’t become the #1 song in the year end list, then I’ll be amazed.

Next Week’s predictions: A huge week for Justin Timberlake.  He’ll get Mirrors into the top 10 and Suit and Tie will get to at least #2.

Hello everyone. Welcome to a brand new column for CLW83.com called the Billboard Breakdown. Although my tastes in music changed a lot over the past couple of years, I’ve started to enjoy more modern music. I’ve also been following the Billboard charts lately, especially the Hot 100. So, every week, I’ll be giving you my thoughts on the weekly top 10. Let’s start the list right now.

#10: I Knew You Were Trouble – Taylor Swift (Last Week: 7 Total Weeks on the top 100: 23)

This will be Taylor Swift’s last week on the top 10, unless it gets a boost in YouTube views or singles purchases, although a 4 to 5 month run in the top 10 is amazing. While not a song I particularly care for, it is a catchy song and continues Taylor Swift’s emergence from country star to all around pop star.

#9: Love Me – Lil’ Wayne Feat. Drake and Future (Last Week: 10 Total Weeks on the top 100: 10)

I like Drake as a solo act.  But when he sticks with Lil’ Wayne’s songs, he outshines his mentor, especially when Lil’ Wayne recycles the tired clichéd song involving how “His bitches love me, those ho’s got pussies like craters, and can’t treat these ho’s like ladies”. We’ve heard this tired song before and Lil’ Wayne brings nothing new to this song than what has already been said by him in previous songs. The sooner this drops out of the top 10, the better.

#8: Feel This Moment – Pitbull feat. Christina Aguilera (Last week: 11 Total Weeks on the top 100: 9)

When Pitbull isn’t going solo, his stuff is miles better. For an example. Listen to Pitbull’s Back in Time and then listen to this song. He seems more on the ball with this song than ever. Not only that, Christina Aguilera is amazing here too. I’m happy to see this making the top 10 after a month of waiting for junk like Scream and Shout to fall off the board.

#7: Started from the Bottom – Drake (Last Week: 6 Total weeks in the top 100: 7)

While Drake has proven in the past to be a talented rapper and singer, he more than often regresses to being another paint by numbers rapper. Started from the Bottom is one of those paint by numbers songs about rising up from obscurity and making it big. The problem I have is that he was always big, especially when he got his big break as a cast member of Degrassi and then having major hits because of said reputation over the past 5 years. I seriously doubt that he thinks he “Started From The Bottom” himself, making this song useless.

#6: Just Give Me A Reason – P!nk feat. Nate Ruess (Last Week: 9 Total Weeks in the top 100: 6)

This song only broke the top 10 last week. This is the better of the two love duets in the top 10 this week. It’s got the bombastic voice of Nate Ruess from fun. and the ever charasmatic P!nk in a combination that is already in the running for my top 10 songs of the year. Everything about this song works for me.  From the lyrics, to the background music, everything works.

#5: Stay – Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko (Last Week: 5 Total Weeks in the top 100: 7)

The lesser of the two love duets. While Just Give Me A Reason is soulful and great, Stay is just lifeless. Rihanna and Mikky Ekko have no harmony at all when the chorus hits and the background track is dull as well. I’d still take this over all 5 of Rihanna’s hits of last year, when she unleashed Where Have You Been and Birthday Cake on us, where her “sexy” lyrics made all of America cringe. At least this song has a full chorus instead of repeating letters or words.

#4: When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars (Last Week: 3 Total Weeks in the Top 100: 14)

Bruno is the hottest male pop star right now. His second big hit off of his Unorthodox Jukebox album and bringing a really powerful piano ballad to the table. This song is amazing. I dig the lyrics and the simplistic melody. And to answer any questions, no this has nothing to do with Bruno Mars and myself sharing the same jewfro hairstyle. Although, I do respect anybody else that pulls that off.

3: Suit and Tie – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z (Last Week: 4 Total Weeks in the Top 100: 11)

After taking a few years off to rejuvenate, J-T comes back to life with Suit and Tie. I honestly enjoy it a lot. The lyrics are spectacular and JT sounds like he wants to be there. I also love the idea of a “classy” song about taking a woman out. It’s much better than the usual “Go out, get her drunk, have sex” songs that have plagued the top 40 over the past few years. This is also in the running for my top 10 best songs of the year.

2: Harlem Shake – Baauer (Last Week: 1 Total weeks in the top 100: 6)

My hatred for the song is only eclipsed by the fact that Billboard started to incorporate YouTube data and this “song” was the hugest beneficiary of it, since it was a gigantic meme at the time of its inception and has only started to die a slow, but hopefully quick death. Nobody has ever heard all 4 minutes of the track and thought “this could be huge!”. All everybody used was a 39 second bit of it that was used on the original viral video of an army roll call with one guy starting to move and then everyone suddenly starts dancing. This shouldn’t even be on Billboard at all. Expect this on my Top 10 Worst list, and pretty high too.

1: Thrift Shop – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz (Last week: 2 Total Weeks in the Top 100: 25)

I heard this song on local radio before it got huge nationwide, since Macklemore is a local Seattle rapper. The odd thing is that Thrift Shop, while great, isn’t even his best song off of his album, The Heist. With the debate going on right now, he’s got a great song called Same Love where he sings about Same-Sex Marriage and how everyone should have it. It hits close to home for him, living on Capital Hill (the big LGBT area in Seattle) and expect no straight rapper to be this heavy and hard on said subject. Seriously, Thrift Shop is good, but check out Same Love. Your day will be better for it.

Predictions for next week: Expect “I Knew You Were Trouble” to drop out of the top 10 and “Harlem Shake” to drop heavy, or even leave the top 10 altogether.
