ANAHEIM HILLS – Mixed-martial-arts fighter "Razor" Rob McCullough towered over the throng of kindergartners, his tattooed arms bulging, his voice booming over a microphone.

The former World Extreme Cage champion, who has made a career of fighting and intimidating opponents, had a simple message:

Don't bully.

"Give me your lunch money," one kindergartner demanded of the man more than twice his height.

"No, that's my money, and I'm planning to keep it," McCullough responded.

"You dress funny," another kindergartener chided, eliciting a roomful of belly laughs.

"I actually like what I'm wearing. Please don't be mean," McCullough said calmly, then walked away.

The kindergartners felt so bold only because they'd been instructed to make fun of the fighter to highlight real-life bullying scenarios.

Two assemblies at Anaheim Hills Elementary School on Wednesday kicked off a nationwide anti-bullying campaign by Santa Ana-based LA Boxing.

The idea: to get fighters such as McCullough, Tito Ortiz and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to talk to students about how to treat classmates to encourage a kind, stress-free learning environment.

"You look at somebody like Razor Rob or Tito Ortiz and they might be what some people would think of as a bully," said Keith Williams, organizer of the assemblies for LA Boxing. "So if you've got them up there – the guys that could be the biggest bullies in the room – saying that it's never OK to be a bully, that sends a strong message."

McCullough, 35, of Huntington Beach, never envisioned himself as a motivational speaker. He grew up in that city and, after his parents divorced, lived with his mom in low-rent motels near Disneyland and struggled to stay out of gangs.

He's got sleeves of tattoos up and down his arms. He's married to a model and adult-film star. And he makes his living kicking other guys in the head and trying to knock out his opponents.

But, McCullough – who now works as a director of training at LA Boxing as well and has a 2-year-old son – said he hopes he's got a story that resonates.

"I don't come in here and talk about fighting, I just talk to kids about my story and encourage them to find what they love, set goals, stay focused and make it happen," said McCullough, wearing a shirt with the message: "100 percent competitor, 0 percent bully."

"I want to reach out to the kids being bullied and also those that could be the bullies and make them think, 'This guy could be a bully, but he's not,'" he added. "It's great if somebody like Shania Twain does a public-service announcement about bullying, but I'm hoping they hear the message more clearly from somebody with my background."

About 56 percent of all students report witnessing a bullying incident take place while at school, according to the federal Substance Abuse and Metal Health Administration. And more than 150,000 children nationwide are estimated to miss school each day because of fears of being bullied.

LA Boxing plans to sponsor dozens of free assemblies similar to the one in Anaheim Hills throughout the country in coming months. The company has 13 gyms in Orange County and 73 others nationwide. The fighters encourage students to get active in a gym, basketball, football, dance – whatever will give them focus, build self-confidence and keep them away from bullies.

UFC Champion Tito Ortiz is scheduled to speak at an assembly Oct. 30 at Huntington Beach High School, where he attended school in the 1990s.

After McCullough spoke, students crowded around him – some asking him to sign their notepads, T-shirts and even a cast.

"It was a good message to hear from him," said Matthew Radcliffe, 11, a sixth grader. "If he's not a bully, then we shouldn't be, either. And if we see other people getting bullied, now I know to speak up, to stand up for them and make sure it doesn't happen to anybody."
