The end of another year. And how fast it went by. However, it was a bittersweet year for me. It's been two (2) years now that I have been part of this great community of book blogging and reviewing and am having as much fun today as I did when I first started. I have met many new friends, read some phenomenal books, have had the opportunity for new adventures and have been honored to host Authors as my guests just to name a few events of this past year. As far as reading, I fell short of what I wanted to accomplish but I hope to do better in 2012.

There were some road blocks that I had to get through this year, but I did, and I want to thank you all for being there for me when I didn't think I was going to make it to the other side. Your prayers, genuine concern, caring, words of encouragement and comfort helped me through. I will forever be thankful.

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for me.

First, I will be moving to my new home over at wordpress. I hope you all come visit, take down my new address, sign up and/or on, leave me a little comment that the directions I gave or that your GPS worked and you found me. Since I am not tech savvy, it might take me a while to learn my way around and navigate the new platform, so I apologize in advance.

And tomorrow, the day I have been patiently waiting for. I am being very optimistic that 2012 is going to be a better year for me....it can't get any worse lol.....at least I don't think so. Remember all those challenges that I signed up for.....all 23 of them....WooHoo.....they start tomorow. One of my resolutions this year is to read more. Because of my personal real life issues, I only read 50 books in 2011...pitiful. There were some months that I read 1 book. So let the challenges begin!!!!!!!

NEWS ALERT!!!!! MOVING!!!!

Dear Friends:

I am moving. Not as in house moving but as in blog moving. And I would love if you would follow me to my new home.

I will officially be, as of 01/01/12, using WordPress as my platform. My new address is:

Due to all the problems I had earlier this month with blogger, when my blog went missing and my gmail account was deleted (all of my Partners In Crime Tours spreadsheets gone), then my blog reappearing but not being able to access it, only my coadministrator could, then 2 weeks later, receiving an email that my gmail account had been restored but no explanation given, was as the saying goes, the straw that broke the camel's back.

I have to give a HUGE THANKS to my good friend Gina, from Hott Books, (my computer angel) woh was able to access my blog, save all of my work, recreate, set up my new blog, move and teach me the basics of WP, all the while trying to fix her and others' blogs who were having the same problem.

I have said that I am not computer savvy, so there will be bumps in the road until I get used to the new place but hopefully it won't take long...LOL!!

What were your favorite books of 2011?

My response:

I always get palpitations when a question asks for "a favorite", maybe because I'm a parent and I would never be able to answer the question "who is my favorite child". And since moving into this neighborhood of book blogging and reviewing, I have a total new outlook about books. I used to purchase them, read for enjoyment and either they would go on my shelf or be passed on. Now I know the hard work, the heart and soul the author puts into writing a particular book for my pleasure of reading. That book IS "their child"

This year I had the opportunity to read many outstanding books that I would recommend, many more than I am going to list, but I narrowed it down to these 10 that really stood out:

WARNING: LENGTHY POST

And how is everyone today? Exhausted? Feeling guilty that you had that extra piece of pie lol. I know I am. Did you have a wonderful day with family and friends? Did Santa bring you any book related presents, would love to hear if you want to share. Would love to hear about anything that Santa brought if you want to tell us about.

This weekend was bittersweet for me. It was very hard for me with my Mom not being here and I have to be honest, there were some tears, for different emotions throughout the day. However, I realized as we sat around my mother-in-law's table, how much I had to be thankful for. My husband and I did the blessing before we started eating, which is another story because today I start a HUGE diet after what I ate lol.

I am blessed. The fact that my husband was sitting there and did the first part of the blessing after what happened 2 months ago, his chair could have been empty too. Both my sons were there from out of state and one of their gfs, who I consider my daughter, my other son's gf, who I also consider my daughter, didn't fly in with him and spent Christmas with her parents. And to see the relationship my sons have with each other, I am blessed. Some of you know, but I only have one sibling who is 9 1/2 years older than me and is severely handicapped. My Mom and her were joined at the hip for all of her life and now lives in an assisted living facility and loves it. She was having a very difficult time this weekend but I was so proud of her. She came out to eat with us Saturday night and was at my mil's yesterday. I picked her up and brought her to my house because she wanted me to style her hair and put make up on her to go out. And she had a wonderful time!! So even though it was hard, I know my Mom was looking down and smiling. And then my husband, both boys and Heather (Paul's gf) gave me gifts from the heart that the tears continued until we were done opening presents. My boys tease each other constantly and Mark said to Paul...."Oh great...You had to give her your present first...you knew that she would do this". And I didn't stop having eyes filled with tears until we left the house to go and eat. I am sharing one that was book related below.

Today's question:

Did you get any books for Christmas? If so, what were they?
If you didn’t, what books are you most looking forward to reading (and/or buying) in the new year?

My response:

I didn't get any books and/or even an Amazon GC this year, which did and didn't surprise me. My family knows and sees the big 5 shelf bookcase, and shake their heads in disbelief, when I tell them that those are my TBR books, plus the books in my Kindle and Sony EReaders. So this year, I think they realize too, that the big bookcase in my reading room/office (now called "hopefully in my lifetime TBR bookcase) and the little book case that holds my finished reads, that I don't need any more books. But I love it, since they have started to read again, when they come home, they now go to both bookcases to see what they can take.

However, one of the gifts my Paul (the oldest) and the first gift he said I had to open was this:

The picture doesn't do it justice. It is a silver plated bookmark.The heart is raised with pearl in the center and rhinestones around the sides of the heart. There is filigree down both sides and engraved with this saying:

A mother understands what a child does not say.

OK..how many Moms out there are getting that warm and fuzzy feeling? lol

And as to what books I am looking forward to, lol all the ones that sound like I would enjoy!!! lol

My Thoughts and Opinion: Where do I begin? I'm thinking that I should apologize in advance as this is not going to be like my typical reviews where I attempt to make them short, concise, and to the point but this book has me reeling. It all started in May of 2010 when I read a debut novel, Moonlight Falls, by an unknown author to me, Vincent Zandri and I was hooked. Since that time I have read every one of his books and he doesn't disappoint.
If you are a reader of mystery's, thrillers, non stop action filled novels, this my friends is the book you NEED to read!!! Vinzent Zandri hasIT!!! Vincent Zandri is IT!!! Vincent Zandri is brillIanT!!! Just when you thought he reached the pinnacle in writing, he has found a higher mountain!!! He has raised the bar with Scream Catcher!! My heart was pounding at warp speed!!! This novel is a page turning, can't put down novel.
Fantastic!!!! Zandri is a genius at story telling. Why does this book have me reeling? His inventiveness of writing style. I noticed a deviation immediately. It has the classic Zandri flair, short chapters, cliff hanging chapters, twists and turns, non stop action and page turning suspense. However, this had more drama, less quirky, quip dialogue and more of a psychological thriller plot. Masterful!!!!
As I mentioned that I have read every one of his books, and noticed a different writing style, I am thinking that Zandri will keep producing unique novels that will keep readers wanting more and and enjoying each and every one. Exceptional!!! His creative talent is phenomenal!!! Vincent Zandri and Scream Catcher are Champions!!!!

To all the wonderful, fantastic, caring, genuine, funny, sincere "friends" that I have met these past 2 years of blogging and that have welcomed me into their neighborhood, from my house to yours, A very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday. My wish for you is that you are surrounded by family and friends, laugh, reminisce , eat too much and enjoy each and every minute. Like at my table today, there may be an empty spot at your table too, but past memories will allow that special person to fill that seat.

Christmas is truly about, the birth of Jesus for those that believe and being surrounded by loved ones, however, I do hope that Santa leaves you lots of books to help in completing all your Challenges for 2012.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!

I am sure that everyone has a million and one things to do today, running to store for that last minute gift that you forgot to pick up, finishing the wrapping of gifts, grocery shopping or cooking, which is what I will be doing after I post this. But I wanted to send Holiday Wishes your way.

The past few Saturdays, I have been sharing the challenges I plan on participating in for 2012. Today is no exception, except I am hoping that maybe I can sneak these by you lol.

JUSTIFICATION.....I had no choice!!!!! I did a little snooping on 2 blogs. One was my co-host's blog, Gina from Hott Books, and the other was the Reading Challenge Addict Challenge's Queen Addict, Bev from My Reader's Block. Gina, poor girl, she has it bad, is close to 30 challenges and Bev, well at last count, 23. Now I ask you, what kind of team player would I be if I didn't keep up with them. So, like I said, I had to.

Jodi and Robyn, those amazing ladies from WOW, have done it again. They are stopping by with another incredible female author. I have the honor today to introduce you to Ms. Debra Stang!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In addition to her parents and two sister, Debra's family includes four cats. The current crew includes a grouchy nine-year-old named Achilles; and orange tabby and alpha male named, appropriately enough, Alexander; and a black and white long-haired cat with attitude named Leroux. Then there's the foster cat named Pumpkin. Of course, it all started with a three-month-old brown-and-gray tabby named Calypso who had strong feelings about most people. And not warm fuzzy feelings. Calypso even had the dubious honor of being banned by not one, but two vets.

When not caring for cats or writing, Debra spent many years as a social worker. She worked with AIDS patients, emergency room patients, and those with Alzheimer's. Her final years as a social worker were spent with hospice patients. Although some would view that as a depressing job, Debra chose to view herself as a catalyst helping people make their final hopes and dreams come true. Sometimes it was making up with a family member after a decades long feud or leaving behind the stress of the office to reconnect with another aspect of their personality.

Debra took a clue from her patients and recently decided her writing--for years a part-time career--couldn't wait any longer. Worried she would become one of those people who would one day say, "I wish I had..." she handed in her resignation and is now living her dream as a full time writer.

Is It Alzheimer’s or Is It Dementia? Probably, It’s Both

I spent four years of my social work career working in a facility for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. During that time, I ran into a lot of confusion about the condition. Many family members would say things to me like, “Mom doesn’t have Alzheimer’s; she just has a touch of dementia,” or “Dad does not have dementia—the doctor said it was Alzheimer’s.”

I understand that words like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are bone-chilling to many family members. If it’s easier for them to use one term or the other, that’s not a problem. But for people who are genuinely confused, this article explains why Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are often used interchangeably.

First, let’s start with a quick definition. Dementia is a cluster of cognitive symptoms including short and/or long term memory loss, impaired judgment and decision making, difficulty understanding and completing simple tasks, and confusion in time and space. In its later stages, it may also affect a person’s ability to speak and understand speech.

A great many conditions can cause dementia. Some, such as medication side effects, depression, poor diet, or acute infections are reversible. Others, like Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Pick’s disease are not reversible or curable.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia symptoms, accounting for about half of all diagnosed cases with dementia. It is a disorder which causes protein deposits or neurofibrillary tangles and plaques to form in the brain, permanently and progressively destroying brain tissue. Alzheimer’s disease is not curable, but there are certain medications that can slow its progression.

One of the reasons Alzheimer’s disease is such a hard diagnosis for patients and families to swallow is that there is no definitive way to test for it. It can only be confirmed through a brain biopsy which takes place after the patient has died. It is often called a “rule out” diagnosis, because once other testable causes of dementia have been ruled out, Alzheimer’s disease is the most likely culprit.

Alzheimer’s is a diagnosis no doctor likes to give, and it is certainly one that no patient or family member wants to hear. Early diagnosis is important, however, for several reasons. First, it gives the person with Alzheimer’s and his or her family time to put plans such as a medical and/or financial durable power of attorney in place. Second, it gives the patient and family time to learn about Alzheimer’s and to try various treatments that might slow disease progression. Finally, understanding that the person with Alzheimer’s is truly ill, and not just deliberately behaving in ways that are annoying, can help family members respond with caring and compassion.

If you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, I am truly sorry. I know you are on a difficult path. Please know, however, that while Alzheimer’s can steal memories, it cannot take away tiny pleasures like the smell of a favorite meal cooking, the touch of a loved one’s hand, or the warm belly of a sleepy puppy. True, these moments will be forgotten, but when they occur, they are precious and should be savored for the gifts that they are. I wish you all the joy and peace in the world during this holiday season.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Hospice Tails shares the stories of those without voices. This books tells the stories of fourteen pets and the role they played when their loved one was ill or dying. The stories range from sad to touching to downright hysterical. There was King, who had the hospice nurses very nervous. Until they realized he was a lap dog in a pit bull’s body. Jasper and Jackie, Amazon parrots who put on a daily concert for their owner, even on the last day of his life. As an Alzheimer’s patient’s world shrunk Washington, a golden retriever, became the only “person” he recognized. This book is ideal for animal lovers as well as those who are caretakers—either as a profession or for a loved one.

My Thoughts and Opinion: In this very short and quick read, 108 pages, the author introduces the reader to some terminally ill patients and their pets who give unconditional love and comfort to their owners until their very last breath. When I was contacted to read and review this book and also hosting the the author as a guest, it was an automatic yes. Being a former nurse, I have witnessed the residents in a Nursing Home setting and their reactions to and behavior toward animals. How one's eyes light up and a smile will appear. How the patient will eagerly try to pet or cuddle with the cat and/or dog, give him/her a treat.

This book had me exhibiting an array of emotions. Sadness, laughter, empathy and tears. A deeply emotional poignant read, however, delightful and funny. A definite book for animal lovers and for those in the medical field.

Any books you’re hoping to get for the holidays this year?
How about giving? Are you giving any good ones?

My answer:

My family knows my addiction to books, however, they have also seen my tbr bookcase. So I am sure that I will not be getting one specific book. I assume that they will do and say what they do for the past couple of years and that is "you have so many books, I have no clue which ones you have already one so I got you an Amazon GC instead". Which, is fine by me. Because they are right. I do have too many books already waiting tbr (a 5 shelf bookcase full of just tbr books). And this way I can either save the GC(s) for something big to purchase like the Kindle Fire (I need to do some more research on that) or purchase books that I really NEED and HAVE to read during the year, or book accessories that I want.

As far as giving books this year...YAY!! YES!!! I am. Haven't done that in years. My years of reading to my "boys" when they were small as finally paid off. Once they hit HS, they stopped reading for pleasure. Never picking up a book. I wondered where did I go wrong? I read to them from when they were young, went to "library school" as toddlers, whenever we went to the mall, we always stopped in a book store and they were allowed to pick out 1-2 books each to add to their personal book library and took weekly walks to the library. Now that they are men, on their own, working (as I tell them) in their "big boy jobs", they have taken up reading again. So this will be the first Christmas in many years that I have bought them each a book. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which ones, in case they are reading this post, but I was so excited that it was the 1st Christmas presents I purchased.

It's been approximately 2 years now that I have been part of this wonderful community of book blogging and I can honestly say that I still enjoy it as much as I did when I first started. My Inspiration For King of Paine

I'm often asked about my inspiration for King of Paine because the story melds two wildly different story lines. In one, Special Agent Frank Paine hunts an online stalker who's taunting him with crimes hinting at the agent's own kinky past. At the same time, reporter Roger Martin is guided by an angelic woman to investigate missing senior citizens across the country. Naturally, the two plot lines connect in a shocking way.

Many authors look to their characters for inspiration; I tend to become intrigued by a plot point or theme first and then build characters around that. Given King of Paine's split personality, it's not surprising that it was inspired by two distinct ideas.

After receiving nice feedback about the sex scenes in The Jinx, my mind was predisposed to pursuing an erotic theme in the next book, and a case study in Psychology Today piqued that interest. The details escape me, but my recollection is that a woman had met a man in an online sex chat room and, after establishing a relationship, agreed to reenact a bondage fantasy in a live meeting. During the encounter she attempted to withdraw consent. The article examined the effectiveness of prior consent as a legal defense when the ability to withdraw it is impaired.

That case study led me to build a plot line around the world of online BDSM chat and the mix of ordinary people and devious predators who inhabit it. Even the wary may find it impossible to distinguish an innocent geek exploring his or her dark fantasies from a warped freak intent on doing harm. It made me wonder where that line could be drawn, and Frank Paine navigates that issue as he sorts victims from suspects.

My second inspiration derived from musings about personal accountability of the terminally ill. It's natural to have a violent urge from time to time, but fear of God or imprisonment prevents most of us from acting on it. I questioned what moral forces would keep a desperate patient in check when the law and religion were less motivating. Consider this snippet from a conversation between Frank Paine and his FBI colleague, the cyber agent Jeronimo Reyes:

Jero sipped his coffee, contemplating his response. “I think we rely upon the good faith of strangers for our survival every day. I’m less comfortable when strangers don’t believe in the salvation of their soul, and the law fails to act as a backstop. And, for all the wonderful things people say about Simone Perlow, until we have the chance to interview her, she’s still a stranger to me—as is your new girlfriend, by the way.”

Several characters stricken with cancer figure prominently in the story, including Simone Perlow, the co-founder of an organization called Doctors With Cancer. This gave me an opportunity to experiment with how different people react to the same stressors. An FBI profiler can analyze a crime and predict with some statistical accuracy many of the demographic and psychological qualities of the perpetrator. When faced with a stressful change in life like loss of health, employment, or a loved one, some people snap.

Yet the predictive quality of these triggers runs only one way. No profiler can foretell how any particular person will react. Like my characters in King of Paine, some snap, others take courageous action. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

What’s one book you always recommend to just about anyone?

My answer:

Questions that ask for "one" answer is always hard for me, it's like answering what child do you love more. With that being said, I will have to bend the rules a bit.

This past year I have read books by authors that I definitely would recommend. Beachcombers by Nancy Thayer, Author Chevy Stevens' books, Megan's Way by Melissa Foster, and of course, any book by Vincent Zandri.

There are many more but it would depend on who I would be recommending a book to, what their likes are, the genre they are interested in.

What book would you recommend me to read?

Hi everyone! And how is your Sunday? Any fun plans? Or are you running around finishing your Christmas shopping? My best friend took me the other day, as it is hard for me to walk around for lengthy amounts of time, and since she is the Queen of Shopping, we were finished in no time. Plus the fact that I do most of my shopping online.

As you may know, I am partners with Molly from Reviews By Molly, in a virtual PR company, Partners In Crime Tours (www.partnersincrimetours.net). Plus the fact that I just finished reading a book that will be touring with us starting in January to April and it was a 4/5. Addendum: Name sound familiar?......... It is fast-paced and darkly humorous, a little reminiscent of Elmore Leonard. The latter might be because the author, Peter Leonard, has been influenced by Elmore Leonard about as much as a writer can be – the elder Leonard is his father.
