Yesterday huge news broke when the amazing team at Magic Lantern got successfully recorded continuous Raw video on A Canon 5d Mark iii.

Check out some same footage that EOSHD shoot using a very early version of the software hack.

What is raw and why does it matter?

The basic idea is that raw video is uncompressed. So, all the data the camera receives goes into the video file. Currently when you shoot video on a DSLR, a GoPro or even your cell phone they all compress the footage, some do better then others but the footage has been compressed. Compression removes data that can be used in post when color grading, keying footage or applying effects. So the lass compress the better.

The Black Magic Camera’s (magic seems to be a key word when talking about raw) where a huge hit in the video world because they shoot raw video a very affordable price point. It’s not the same but this is what this new hack is going to do for the 5d Mark iii.

What does the new Magic Lantern allow you to do?

14bit linear uncompressed RGGB raw video

Full frame mode up to 1920 x 1280

1:1 Crop modes up to 3592 x 1320 (frames drop as you push the frame size past 2.5k)

Currently this is prototype software working on the 5d Mark iii, but EOSHD thinks that after a stable version of this is working we could see this ported to the 5d Mark ii, 6d and even the 600d but don’t hold your breath on that just yet.

Read more in depth converge at EOSHD

Last year I wrote a post letting you know how you could get non-profit pricing for Creative Suite 6 and the newly unveiled Creative Cloud. This year Adobe made a predictable but no less unprecedented move by going to a subscription only model for almost all of their software.

What does this mean?

Adobe has made it clear that CS6 was the last creative suite they will release. From now on you can get a subscription for individual programs or everything Adobe makes.

The Pros

Always have the latest version

Access to every program, no limitations of suites

Access to old versions of programs

Cloud Storage

The Cons (A Big One)

Once your subscription ends you no longer have access to the software (tied in for life)

See the end of the article for one solution to this problem

Pricing

As I wrote about in my past article their are a few different versions of the Creative Cloud: Individual and Team Editions. You can get student pricing on both and non-profit pricing on the team edition.

Non-Profit Pricing

The non-profit pricing is pretty much the same as the educational team pricing you see on Adobe’s Site. This team edition includes 100GB’s of storage, admin controls and centralized billing. However, you can’t buy the non-profit version from Adobe.

To buy the non-profit edition of the cloud you will need to use a reseller and I would highly recommend CDW.com. You will need to call and set up an account to prove your non-profit status, the easiest way to do this is to call Dave Nozar the Non-Profit Account Manager @ 877.667.0833.

The cost is $480 billed annually, if you are getting more the 5 seats (users) you start to get some price breaks so make sure to ask what is best for your situation.

Don’t want to get sucked in the subscription plan?

I have seen ton’s of people complaining about the subscription model and how unaffordable it is for their church, but their is an alternative!

You can still buy Creative Suite 6 from CDW at a non profit price. This will not have any support or updates and you can’t buy a upgrade guarantee but you can use this software for the rest of your life (or until your computer doesn’t support it).

So if your organization is light on funds and you can’t make a subscription plan work you should look at buying now before this option is gone. Check out the pricing of that below:

Design & Web Suite: $565 (regularly priced $1,899)
Production Suite: $565 (regularly priced $1,899)
Master Collection: $950 (regularly priced $2,599)

Disney decided to do something big in their parks to celebrate the summer release of Monster’s University. As you will see in the video below they are throwing an all nighter in 3 parks (Magic Kingdom, Disneyland and California Adventure) from May 24 till May 25th. What makes this special is that fact they they used 8 35k projectors to create a spherical projection of Mike Wazowski on Space Ship Earth at EPCOT for the announcement.

Check out the video below to see how Disney created all of this magic!

Behind the Scenes:

Bonus

This isn’t Disney’s try at project mapping. During their night time show “Magic, Memories and You!” they project on either Cinderella’s Castle or It’s a Small World to create an visual stunning end of day experience.
