Maybe you’ve heard of RefWorks, but wondered how it can help you with your research and writing. Take a look at these examples to see how RefWorks has helped your colleagues at UVa.

Lisa is a graduate student in UVa’s nursing program and has recently resumed her education after many years in the workforce. Writing papers with the bibliography in the correct format is a challenge. RefWorks has made Lisa’s life a lot easier. She can now focus on the content of the paper and not the mechanics.

Michael and his colleagues are collaborating on a document. Michael uses RefShare to share references even with colleagues outside of UVa.

Jennifer is on the House Staff. She appreciates the flexibility that RefMobile provides her. With her mobile device Jennifer can access her RefWorks account from anywhere.

What do these three people have in common? They have discovered that RefWorks can help simplify and organize their research results.

As a Web-based, free to UVa tool, RefWorks allows you to store references and attachments online, create bibliographies, and share references with others. You can access RefWorks from Popular Databases on the Library Home Page.

Classes and Consultations on RefWorks
The Library offers opportunities to learn about RefWorks with both classes and one-on-one consultations. Register for a class or set-up a consultation at a time that fits your schedule.

Rod Martin is the newest member of the Library Service Desk, working evenings.

Martin is a native of Massachusetts but has lived in Charlottesville for the past 10 years. Rod holds a Master degree in Theological Studies from Boston University School of Theology and is a recent graduate of UVA with a PhD in European history, specializing in European intellectual and religious history.

Before joining the Library Service Desk team, Rod worked in a variety of positions including a short stint in our own Historical Collections working with the collection digitations project. Along with his full time position in the Library, Rod is currently the “consulting historian” for National Geographic, writes articles for T & T Clark Companion to Reformation Theology, and has begun work translating the works of Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran Church.

Rod is excited about joining the library for many reasons but foremost is his love of libraries, books, and learning and the opportunity to work with our patrons in their educational endeavors.

The exhibit includes information, images, and artifacts on the pervasiveness of tuberculosis 1850-1950, the search for cures, establishment of sanitariums to treat patients, and fundraising for treatment and research, along with other topics. The special emphasis is on the various fresh-air treatments for TB patients (mountain air, sea air, desert air, even cave air).

Part of the exhibit is a collection of TB-related posters from the American Lung Association of Virginia. The posters are from Historical Collections and Services of the library and are being exhibited for the first time. Also in the exhibit is a 1925 incubator used to culture TB specimens at the Blue Ridge Sanitarium in Charlottesville.

Drawings will be held for a TB-related movie and for book sets of novels by authors with tuberculosis.

The library world is changing: in-person library visits are declining, while virtual uses of the library Web and resources are on the rise. One way the Library is responding to this change is to expand our services beyond the library walls.

Librarians will spend less time at the Reference Desk and more time outside the library. They will continue to work collaboratively with Health System individuals and groups to develop innovative and creative ways to share and organize knowledge.

What does this mean to Library visitors? You will still have the service that you need through a one-stop point at the Circulation Desk, with the Reference Desk closing this summer. At the Circulation Desk you’ll be able to check out materials, get help looking up an item, and request technology support and reference assistance. If your information needs cannot be met at this desk, a reference librarian will be paged for assistance.

We also hope our online services such as reference chat will be convenient for those who want to come to the Library virtually for assistance. Eventually the physical Reference Desk will be closed but the virtual reference desk will remain open.

As a profession and as individuals, librarians continue to evolve to meet the changing landscape of information technologies. We welcome your ideas on how we can continue to serve you in this new environment.

In this hands-on class, learn how to integrate 35-mm slides, VHS clips, and ideas for electronic media using Macintosh computers and software.

The Moore Multimedia program, consisting of two three-hour sessions, is scheduled for May 5th and 7th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Because of the small class size and specialized nature of the skills taught, a short statement of interest is requested from each registrant. Instructor approval, based on statement of interest, will be required before attendance can be confirmed.
