Sometimes simple ideas lead to powerful solutions.

Recently, Kelly Near, Outreach Librarian, and Cindy Westley, Director of Patient and Family Education, developed such an idea: a medical reconciliation card.

Developed as a way to ensure the safe use of medications, these wallet-sized cards give patients a place to document all the medications and dosages that they take. A personal “master list” of medications helps patients, as well as the health professionals with whom they come into contact, keep track of their medications.

The cards are produced by the UVa Health Resource Center. A PDF of the card, in both English or Spanish, can be downloaded from this site.

Look for these cards at UVa outpatient pharmacies, the UVa-HealthSouth Rehab Hospital, as well as in locations, such as JABA and CVS, throughout the community.

Are you interested in what was hanging on the walls of anatomy laboratories and medical school classrooms a hundred years ago?

Historical Collections has created an exciting new Web exhibition showcasing these objects: early 20th century anatomical wall charts.

Anatomy: The Foundation of Medicine presents a series of historical wall charts created by anatomist Sir William Turner of the University of Edinburgh. Called the W. & A. K. Johnston’s Charts of Anatomy and Physiology, these colored plates illustrate eight body systems: bones, ligaments, muscles, heart and arteries, veins and lungs, organs of digestion, nervous system, and organs of sense and voice.

The exhibit also includes a fascinating overview of the technical and artistic advancements of anatomical drawing from Aristotle to the 20th century.

The anatomical charts on display were the property of Dr. William Gayle Crutchfield, a professor of neurological surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine for 33 years. They are the gift of his son, William Crutchfield.

This summer, the Library will be launching a new design for its Web site. Serving the UVa Health System and the University, the Health Sciences Library caters to hospital health care providers and university faculty, staff, and students.

The new design of the Library web site was created with these disparate clients in mind. David Moody, Library Webmaster, remarks, “We thought a lot about how to personalize a site that serves so many different people. A clinician’s information needs may be different than the needs of an undergraduate nursing student, but we wanted to make sure that both found a home on our site.”

The Web site’s lively new design incorporates the latest Web 2.0 technologies, such as RSS feeds, Blogs, and collaborative applications, with the aim to establish a real time, dynamic presence for its users. The redesigned site will launch at the end of June.

The face of the country is changing. In 50 years time, the traditional English-speaking majority of yesteryear will give way to a population of diverse cultures and languages. This new cultural landscape is transforming Health Care.

<a href='http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/library/wdc-lib/collections/subject_info/Competency/index_umbrella.cfm' title='culturaldiversity.gif'''><img src='http://news.hsl.virginia.edu/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/culturaldiversity.gif'' alt='culturaldiversity.gif''/>

The face of the country is changing. In 50 years time, the traditional English-speaking majority of yesteryear will give way to a population of diverse cultures and languages.

This new cultural landscape is already transforming health care. Health care analysts are pointing to the growing need for providers to adjust to the nation’s changing demographics by developing and updating their health communication skills.

Health Communication
Effective health communication is a shared responsibility between patients, families, and the health care team. The practice of effective communication can positively transform a patient’s medical experience. Whereas studies have shown that poor health communication can contribute to:

Negative patient outcomes

Longer visits, delays in care, poor communication and incomplete consents

Decreased patient satisfaction and compliance

A good plan of care that incorporates effective health communication methods can lead to:

Increased preventive health visits

Patients who are involved in their care and more likely to follow instructions

Increased trust, satisfaction, and comfort for patients, families and providers

Health Communication in the Health System
The UVa Health System has recently spearheaded a culturally competent practice initiative for the advancement of cultural communication skills. Kelly Near, the Library’s Outreach Librarian, partnered with Cindy Westley, Director of Patient and Family Education, to develop content for the Web site Culture and Communication in Health Care, and its corresponding Net Learning Module. Near and Westley worked with the Library’s instructional design team of Ellen Ramsey and Guohua Pan to develop materials for the site.

Linked off the Library homepage, Culture and Communication in Health Care provides a series of resources on how to serve diverse populations. Its satellite page, Effective Health Communication, presents practical guidelines on how to communicate productively with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Other important guides from Culture and Communication in Health Care include Cultural Diversity, Patient Education, Patient Safety, Health Disparities, and Ethics and Moral Distress.

Write Papers Offline
RefWork’s Write-N-Cite III allows you to write and format your papers offline. Simply download your RefWorks database through Write-N-Cite III, and then work on your paper with your downloaded database. Visit RefWorks: Writing Your Paper Offline for instructions.

Import References into RefWorks
Now you can easily import PDF, Word, and Web references into RefWorks through HubMed, a PubMed search engine. Follow our quick, step-by-step instructions on how to import these references.
