The Kindle Fire is an exciting new e-book reader that also allows for web browsing. Some people are calling it the newest tablet; drop by the First Thursday’s technology table –no reservations necessary– and see what you think. Find out from one of our technology librarians how easy it is to download books and read at your convenience! You can also take one home to try out. Simply reserve it online and pick it up at the Library’s Service Desk.

First Thursdays in the Library Series. During the 2011/12 school year, the Library will continue to offer the series “First Thursdays in the Library”. This year will have a slightly different focus than in the past. We plan to feature our own expertise in the areas of information, technology, or health topics. Our hope is that these topics will be of interest to you and will stimulate thought and discussion.

The Health Sciences Library is excited to undergo a major re-design of our web page in 2012. In order to better understand how easy –or not easy– our page is to use, we are planning to perform a number of usability tests over the next year. Our hope is that a large number of participants with different backgrounds will volunteer to provide us feedback. These in-person sessions will last approximately 1 hour and will require participants to talk out loud as they complete tasks. In return for their time, $10 gift cards to the hospital cafeterias or Higher Grounds will be received.

The DMPTool allows you to create an editable document for submission to a funding agency

As research becomes more data rich, more funding bodies are requiring applicants to state in their applications how their data will be managed. Thanks to the University of Virginia Library System, along with several other institutions, developing a data management plan has never been easier because of their newly created resource, DMPTool. By netbadging in with your computing UVa id, the DMPTool will allow you to:

Create, edit, and save, ready-to-use data management plans

Keep track of and meet funder data management plan requirements

View sample plans

Access step-by-step instructions and guidance as data management plans are generated

Find locally available resources and services to help fulfill granting agency’s data management requirements

The DMPTool allows you to create an editable document for submission to a funding agency and can accommodate different versions as funding requirements change.

In February, the Health Sciences Library will feature manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts that reflect the contributions of African Americans in health care

Historical Collections at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library is pleased to present our latest exhibit, “African Americans in the Health Care Professions.” As noted historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson once stated, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” During the month of February, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating the achievements of African Americans in the Health Care Professions by visiting the exhibit in the library’s lobby. In addition to manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts, Historical Collections has over 15,000 rare books, which offer insight and reflections on the history of medicine. These treasures are normally only available for viewing in Historical Collections’ Wilhelm Moll Rare Book and Medical History Room, but during the exhibit two display cases will feature rare books and journal articles written by and about the men and women who broke down barriers to medical and nursing education and advanced knowledge in the medical sciences. We hope the exhibit is an inspiration to future health care professionals.

We also invite you to visit Historical Collections & Services to learn more about the history of the health sciences or visit our website, which features over thirty online exhibits, a guide to our manuscripts collections, and the Online Visual History Project (with over 2500 photographs from the Health Sciences Library). If you’re interested in seeing more of the rare materials in Historical Collections, visit ourFacebook page, for more photographs and digitized content to add a little historical perspective to current health sciences news.

Springer Protocols is the largest subscription-based electronic database of reproducible laboratory protocols in the Life and Biomedical Sciences — and the University of Virginia currently subscribes to it. It includes over 25,000 protocols from 15 subject collections in the areas of cell biology, immunology, and more. Recently, Springer Protocols launched a mobile site so that users of iOS (Apple) and Android smartphones and tablet devices can view it more easily. Devices will automatically redirect from the traditional Springer page to the mobile site ( m.springerprotocols.com). If you are on grounds, the full-text is readily available. Those who are located at off grounds, will need to set up the proxy server on their device to read each protocol.

If you would like more information about Springer Protocols or setting up the proxy server from your device, contact a Librarian at 924-5444 or hsl...@virginia.edu.

If you consider yourself a more visual person, you may want to check out the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). Recently purchased by the University Library System, JoVE is a peer reviewed, PubMed indexed journal devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format.

Why video format? According to JoVE’s publishers, “visualization greatly facilitates the understanding and efficient reproduction of both basic and complex experimental techniques, thereby addressing two of the biggest challenges faced by today’s life science research community: i) low transparency and poor reproducibility of biological experiments and ii) time and labor-intensive nature of learning new experimental techniques.”

Check it out and see for yourself! JoVE can be accessed directly and is available on the Library list of e-journals.

PubMed Health, a new resource from the National Library of Medicine, provides the latest reviews of clinical effectiveness on a variety of health topics. By providing access to systematic reviews, resources from the Database of abstracts of Reviews Effects, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence Clinical Guides, and more, this resource can help explain the results of well-performed research. With over 5000 materials included –and growing– PubMed Health is geared towards consumers and health professionals alike.

One interesting aspect of PubMed Health is a section called “Behind Headlines” that breaks down the specifics of research recently reported in the news. “Behind Headlines” hopes to be an authoritative source to explain the facts and give a better understanding of the science that makes the news.

PubMed Health is available at no cost and can be accessed directly or on the Library’s Web page under “Resources”.
