“A mind too active is no mind at all.” (Theodore Roethke)

Being constantly on the go, doing ’stuff’, or leaving no room for playtime ‘makes Johnny a dull boy’…It also makes no time for making beats or writing songs… Your mind needs time to absorb everything it experiences in order to keep growing musically…

I don’t know about you but I am DEFINITELY too busy to make beats. However, I make time and plan for making beats and writing songs. I prioritize them according to the current goals and fit them into my current business schedule. We all do this to some extent – the challenge is following through and holding yourself accountable.

Tutorial: If you find yourself too busy to Make Beats:

"Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what's next or how. The moment you know how, you begin to die a little. The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark." (Agnes De Mile)

Mankind's human mind just loves to categorize, stereotype, and label everything it understands and everything it doesn't understand. As writers, as soon as words hit paper, our thoughts tend to wander to what our words mean and how they will be interpreted before we even complete the thought or finish the song.

“We are always doing something, talking, reading, listening to the radio, planning what next. The mind is kept naggingly busy on some easy, unimportant external thing all day.” (Brenda Ueland)

Ever notice creation of your best melodies and song ideas happen in your car or right before sleeping. Why is that?

..There are no distractions.

Of course, it’s easy to zone out and be available for music creativity when you have no distractions. That’s just not realistic though. With today’s music technology and social media explosion, you’re daily bombarded with distractions. It gets easy to forget that undisturbed focus is essential in achieving your music goals no matter what it may be.

But if you never allow yourself the freedom and the time to write, the time to enjoy the work you have done, the time to live and enjoy life, or the time to just ‘be’ and do nothing, is it possible you may be too busy or distracted with projects and tasks that do not lead to your ultimate dream?

“We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or to other peoples’ models, learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.” (Shakti Gawain)

When writing, don’t censor your ‘inner artist’. Let your emotions flow through your pen and let your creativity pour out onto your paper. Get your feelings and thoughts out of your head - don’t be scared of what’s inside you! Most importantly, capture the emotions of what you are writing.

You can always focus on structure or rewrite it again later but you may never feel that same emotion again... This applies to songwriting, music production or any type of creativity for that matter...

"Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there."
(Bernice Fitz-Gibbon)

At first, being creative is a very subtle entity… It is that voice and those thoughts that quietly give you amazing song and musical ideas… Sometimes, the mind is too noisy or busy to understand. Sometimes, it's easy to hear but not listen - We hear ideas but don’t write them down. Other times, there are ideas that have potential, but need massaging. These ideas usually visit you the most often and often get neglected the most too…

The process of massaging your music creativity starts with 'intent listening' when inspiration speaks. Then take action. This process will keep you from having ‘thousands of unfinished beats’.

By turning down inner noise and focusing on those abstract, crazy, and very personal ideas, more music creativity and possibilities begin to unfold. When you are open and always listening, more ideas can be heard. Very rarely to often times never is a great song or music production ‘inspired to perfection’. They are handcrafted, reconstructed, and massaged to perfection - massaged to sooth the ears of others…

“What we must decide is perhaps how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are.” (Edgar Z. Friedenberg)

Record companies used to develop artists into the best writers, musicians, and performers. Today, I find artist's are getting lost in the DIY. The catch? Without the 'Do it Yourself' Approach, nothing would get done for artists with no funding.. The challenge becomes how to recoup from the loss of focus, music creativity and inspiration.
Sometimes it's easy to forget that Memorial Day is more than a 4 day work week.. It's a day to slow down, stop and think about your personal freedom and ability to live as you choose best.

Thank you veterans, thank you those who have served and are currently serving - friends and family alike. I am so very thankful for your aspirations and passion to serve our country. This Memorial weekend is a salute of honor and respect to you.

.. Now you know out of respect I have to give the hook up this weekend too so here it is:

"Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose - a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye." (Mary Shelley)

When inspiration comes at you, it strikes with words, melodies, & music that can often seem overwhelming. It can be such an information overload that if sidetracked for one slight moment, all creative ideas could be lost. The most important thing to know in times of inspiration is acknowledging the desired end result. Here are 3 Songwriting Tips for Lyrics and Making Beats on a Time Crunch:
