<itunes:summary>"Cat & Cthulhu is like Toy Story. Except instead of being based of the imagination of a child like Andy, based on the imagination of a child like Sid. Ok Cat & Cthulhu isn''t really like Toy Story at all. Except that the main characters are stuffed toys (or an action figure in the case of Marvin). Oh and I do try and keep it at a level suitable for children. But apart from that it is nothing at all like Toy Story. Except that Cat & Cthulhu is also funny in places. Well Cat & Cthulhu is different in that we have Jedi and Ninja. And lots more seafood references. But that is mainly because the two protagonists are seafood junkies. Oh and we have mentions to impending apocalyptic genocide perpetrated by a main character. But then if you have Cthulhu in your cast roster it is kind of hard to get around that fact. Well I hope you enjoy Cat & Cthulhu. If you giggle just a little bit I''ll have succeeded." --- William Ellwood, Author</itunes:summary>

We have moved to WordPress! Yes, after a couple of years on blogspot I have migrated to a WordPress installation on one of my own domains. This is primarily because Blogspot limited the number of items in a feed to 25 – WordPress doesn’t. So now iTunes users can go all the way back to June 2007 and download episode 1 without having to trawl through old blog entries. Plus I think the layouts are much better – my wife described Blogger as Geocities for podcasting!

Show Notes

1. Introduction
Apologies for the lack of shows recently – I have been inundated with work, getting married in the US, the subsequent honeymoon and catching up on everything else. Plus the new World of Warcraft expansion. Which is shiny. However here is a triple bill of episodes to hopefully make up – I’m going to try to endeavour to put out an episode a week in the run up to Christ-/Mithras-/Yith-mas.

In recent news:
* I contributed a reading of “Hallowe’en in a Suburb” by H.P. Lovecraft to “The Nightsound Show” (http://www.nightsound.com)
* Inspired by The Bugcast I now have a drop.io page over at http://drop.io/catandcthulhu where you can share things such as related articles, record promos and leave voicemail with the podcast and other subscribers.

2. Featured Story: “The Game of Kings”
I advise against trying to cheat Cthulhu at any game.

3. Featured Story: “Tummy Rubs for Cthulhu”
Cthulhu is not feeling the love. Unlike the dolphins. Based on this story at the BBC new website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/7003148.stm

4. Featured Story: “Digestion”
Ctuhlhu has devoured one too many souls.

5. Commentary

6. Contact Details
If you would like to contribute to the show or have any feedback then you can contact us via the following methods:
Email us at catandcthulhu@drop.io
You can leave messages, files, links to articles and leave voicemail (if you’re in the USA or don’t mind making an international call) over at http://drop.io/catandcthulhu.

(Apologies for the sound and editing quality – I was recording the commentary and final story late last night while my wife was asleep nearby so I was trying not to wake her.)

Hello all. The Cat and Cthulhu Podcast is taking a break for two weeks whilst I am in the USA for my wedding and honeymoon.

In the meantime to keep you all amused and occupied I am running a competion to win a fabulous Cat and Cthulhu Podcast mug! To enter all you have to do is submit a review of your favourite episode of the podcast. (Guest readers cannot review the episode they starred in though.). The reviews may be positive or negative, it doesn’t matter as long as it reflects your honest opinion of the show.

I will compile a list of the first 100 entries received and the winner will be chosen by roll of D100 (what else?)

Selected entries will also be featured on the show and posted in the show notes.

How to Enter:
=========
1. Email your review, either in text or audio (mp3, ogg or wav format), to archimedesuk at gmail dot com. If sending audio please also include a transcript. Please provide your name and your country, country or state of origin. If you win I will contact you via email for the full address to send your prize to.
2. You can alternatively leave the review on iTunes – but please email me your details afterwards.
3. You can also leave your review on the podcastpickle widget on the site, but you’ll have to register with podcastpickle to leave a review there. Again, please email me your contact details.

Website: http://cncpodcast.blogspot.com

Conditions:
========
* One entry per person per episode.
* The closing date is Thursday 25th of October or when 100 entries have been received, whichever is sooner.
* Due to cost of postage the mug is only available to those with either a UK or USA address.
* The die roll is final – unless it rolls a number not allocated to an entry in which case it will be re-rolled until an entry is rolled-upon.
* Please keep rude words, etc. to a minimum. Defamatory or otherwise unpleasant entries will be discarded. This show is meant to be suitable for all.

Well that’s all for now, happy listening!

Show Notes

Hello and welcome to the 43rd episode of the Cat and Cthulhu podcast.

Today’s episode is a little shorter, as their is no feedback to feature* and as you have heard the promo section has been moved for today to the beginning of the show. Today’s promo is for Yog-Radio and stars an interesting manipulation of Tom Baker’s voice.

I do have some interesting news however. Some time ago I offered my services to FNH, creator of the Cthulhu Podcast and lo my offer was accepted. In the latest episode of the Cthulhu Podcast I star in a modest role as the guide in a production of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Beast In The Cave”. I highly recommend you go check it out at cthulhupodcast.co.uk.

And now to today’s featured story: “Can you quit Evil?”

Well I’m afraid that’s it for today. don’t forget you can review the podcast over at podcastpickle.com, comment on the website, leave a message on the thread at yog-sothoth.com in the yog radio/podcasting forum or leave a skype voicemail for me by calling catandcthulhu. And of course by emailing me at archimedesuk at gmail dot com. Until next time.

*There actually was some feedback but I completely missed it until I came to update – that will teach me to enable comment notification, which I have now done. Rest assured that it will be included in the next episode later this week.

Intro Music and Intro
Hello and welcome to the 42nd instalment of the Cat and Cthulhu Podcast. We haven’t received any feedback since our last show so it’s straight to this episode’s featured story.

Featured Story: “Conspiracy from the Heavens”
The latest meteor shower is being featured heavily in the news and Cat is convinced it is all part of a wider conspiracy by a third party at present unknown. Cthulhu however thinks Cat is just crazy.

I enjoyed making this episode and trying to emphasise the madness in Cat. I even found myself gesturing at the screen as I acted out the dialogue, as well as looking knowingly at my John Wyndam anthology, which includes ‘The Day of the Triffids’, that was on one of my bookshelves nearby.

Readers of Cat and Cthulhu should note that Will (the author) has effectively “pressed the reset button” and has started to write new Cat and Cthulhu stories but in a new continuity. You can still access the previous stories and I shall be continuing to produce audio podcasts of them.

Promos
A promo for Yog Radio and Yog-Sothoth.com followed by a promo for Cat and Cthulhu.

End Show
Congratualations to Yog Radio on their 30th Episode. Remember you can leave feedback by emailing me, commenting either on the website or on the forum thread at Yog-Sothoth.com or by leaving a skype voicemail by calling catandcthulhu.

If you have any feedback regarding the podcast feel free to get in contact via the many ways listed at the end of the notes.

1. Intro Music
Opening sequence of “Approach of the Leviathan” by Richard Shaw.
2. Introduction
For the 40th episode I’ve decided to expand the format of the podcast for this episode and perhaps the next couple as well. This episode is also being produced in stero too. I hope you enjoy the show.
3. Feedback
A few of your comments and other feedback (None in this edition as it’s the first time this has been done here)
4. Featured Story Introduction
So what happens in this episode? While Cthulhu is gone Cat explores the outside world, and is joined sitting next to the road by the Chocolate Horror.
5. Featured Story
“Cat” by William Ellwood, read by Richard Shaw.

Author’s Comment
“Actually written on the plane home from Switzerland. As was the previous issue. The one before that was written in the airport departure lounge. :P”

Producer’s Comment
It’s been over a month since the last proper episode went out but in the meantime there’s been a special episode and also a parody-promo (incidentally the background track to that was Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana, which is a great track in my opinion). One of the reasons for the gap in between episodes was the fact we moved house recently from one side of Sheffield to the other and my personal pc is still not set up in it’s own room and that I don’t have much quiet time in order to produce these.

Work is still progressing on Episode 40(!). I’ve got plans for backing/intro music (sourced from old music coursework – I’m just waiting for a friend to convert it from audio cassette to digital for me) plus field sound recordings of traffic, etc. I’m still working on whether or not we’ll have a guest reader for the story itself.

You’ll notice there is a new standard artwork for this episode (embedded into the mp3) – please be sure to check it out and let me know what you think.

As well as being able to review this podcast at PodcastPickle.com you can also send contributions towards the feeds hosting. All donations are gratefully received and no amount is too small. See the website for further details. Thank you.

Producer’s Comment
This is the first episode since the author stopped writing new stories regularly – but I wouldn’t discount the possibility of him doing any more. I have a new headset with which to record episodes – you’ll notice the lack of clicking on the recording. This should hopefully tide me over until I can afford a proper microphone but will do for now. I shall endeavour to release episode #39 this week as well as work on the 40th Episode Special on which I’m hoping to include some sound recordings and possibly some music.

Producer’s Comment
Apologies for not posting for ages but Real Lifeâ„¢ got in the way, what with university work and spending two weeks in Houston, TX in early February. However I plan from now on to make the time to produce episodes more regularly. Please forgive my poorer voice acting in this episode as I got a mouth ulcer a day or so ago and it’s quite painful to talk. Hope you like the story anyway.

Producer’s Comment
A review of C&C mentioned that the podcast was too short so this time, instead of releasing these two related shortish episodes seperately during the course of the week I may as well combine them into something more substantial.

Sorry for not releasing over the last couple of weeks but I have been busy celebrating Christmas/Annual Gift Day and New Year/Arbitrary Calendar Reset Day with friends and loved ones.

A happy and prosperous 2008 to you all.

Producer’s Comment
I decided to use music for the first time in a C&C podcast, to give the air of taking tea on the terrace of a grand house in the 1920’s. Music is “Ka-lu-a” by Jerome Kern, circa 1922. It and many more ogg formated tunes of the 1920’s can be found at http://nfo.net/ogg.htm. The episode image encoded in the mp3 file is of my improvised studio, with image processing done by Paint.NET.

So what happens in this issue?
Cat and Cthulhu settle down to watch their new favourite Anime, much to Marvin’s despair. A Great Old One dancing to an anime’s theme tune? How embarrassing.

Author’s comment:
I pulled the animé from my ass. It doesn’t exist. If
it does I’d really like to know. I have to say this because Richard,
the producer asked me if it was a real show. I had to say no. Some
context for this issue. Well things had picked up a little mood wise.
I’d been to see “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” the night before. It
wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t great either. So I had pirates on the brain.
But it had to be space pirates. Because that’s far more heavy metal.
What else?
Author’s comment:
Oh man this was written in the crazy week of May. The
day before I’d been to Bern to do some zip-lines and stuff with Susan
and Hayley. That was fun. Six hours of climbing around the tops of
tall trees. All amidst the capital city of Switzerland. The day I
wrote this I’d gone to Germany (just over the border) to play
badminton. I sucked badly. Got my pale arse handed to me on all
accounts by everyone. Day after, I went to the climbing wall in Basel
with Susan and Hayley. This is context. I was genuinely at this point
having an awesome time. Very happy with the way life and things were
going.

Story wise in Cat & Cthulhu this really is the the peak of the story.
Yes, the next episode is the final issue of, “The Death of Cthulhu”
story arch. Nothing too major happening in terms of style hopefully.
Just attempting to build up the tension and set up the next issue.

So what happens in this issue?
Cat and Master contact the Master’s younger sibling in an attempt to find out how to build a rocket to rescue Cthulhu.

Author’s comment:
Well what can I really say about this issue? In some regards it is a
bridging episode enabling the action to move from Switzerland to the
next major location. In other ways it is an exploration of the real
powers that Marvin seems to possess. Of course the really important
thing is that I did ask my brother for permission to use him in this
issue.

The price really was the use of my copy of Knights of the Old
Republic. So I hope your grateful.

Producer’s comment:
Forgive the lateness of this issue but it was delayed by the event of my 22nd Birthday – which I spent at a Model Railway exhibition in Shipley, West Yorkshire.

For some reason the noise profile of my computer has changed slightly. Thus when I perform the noise removal proceedure some of my vocal frequencies are also removed despite my best efforts to correct this. Thus my voice sounds… like I’m talking over a mobile phone. Which is quite apt given that’s how much one is involved in this episode.

All issues from now on will hopefully be produced on my fiance’s very quiet Dell Vostro machine, with it’s nice microphone headset too. So hopefully the quality of the recordings will get better from now on. ^^

So what happens in this issue?
Cat and the Master discuss how come stuffed toys can talk and how they could possibly recover Cthulhu.

Author’s comment:
This issue is put into some context by this
blog post. The plot moves forward a bit for ‘The Death of Cthulhu’
story arch.

For this issue I knew I wanted to have this dialog at roughly this
point in the story arch but I didn’t know where. As the link above
explains I’d popped into the center of Basel to borrow a DVD from a
friend (who I might also have had a crush on) and also avoiding
EastEnders being on the tellybox. Not getting the DVD and having
really wanted to go into town anyway to think about this issue I hit
upon the idea whilst on the tram into the city that it could be set at
this fountain. Which, I really do like as a place and wish I’d spent
more time there in moments like the one just described.

So while I didn’t get the DVD I got the moment of tranquility needed
to write this issue.
Which I guess you can be happy for now.
I’ll just look back on that time spent sitting next to the fountain
drinking coffee as a rather short moment of my life filled with
contentment and optimism.

Producer’s comment:
I can’t think of anything in particular about producing this issue. Apart from that I recorded it while off work with an injured left ankle. Damn you soft tissue injury! At least it hasn’t affected my voice…

Today we’re honored to have the writer of C&C, William Ellwood, join us for an interview.

William: Evening. Not sure who the third party is though.

The audience of course

William: It is always to my constant surprise and amusement that I have one of those.

Why’s that? Have you never thought much of your work?

William: Not really. I mean obviously I place some value on my work. Enough value to show people some of it. I’ve never received much in the way of criticism either positive or negative. Which one I suppose can take as a generally good thing. But in one major sense I don’t know how to value my work. It is just my work and writings against what? Hemmingway, Vonnegut, Thompson or those shitty tie-in novel authors? Or is it more plausibly somewhere in the middle or worse?

Have you always wanted to write? And publish yourself?

William: I’ve always wanted to write yeah I suppose. More tell stories then anything. Or entertain.

Well maybe not entertain. Provoke thought.

William: Publishing myself is an annoying thing. I’d be happier if I didn’t have to do that by myself. I’d be able to concentrate on writing purely then. But I also to some small degree enjoy the control I have over presentation. Even if I am really bad at it.It’s DIY I keep telling myself.

Are you quite a controversial person then?

William:Controversial…probably in a rather meek timid way.

I tend to only have three states of mind about something, love, like or loath.

I guess you could throw ignore in there as well. But that doesn’t begin with l.

It could be a lower case L masquerading as a capital I…

William: It could be.

You’ve had more than one website in the past…were you the really geeky one at school with all the flash gizmos?

William: No. I still don’t have many flash gadgets.

William: No iPod, a fairly powerful PC for running Ubuntu Linux on. So not for gaming. Most glamorous gadget I have is a 22″ flatscreen monitor.

But you’re into computers right?

William: I’ve a love hate relationship with them. I should mention that I study computer science at this point.

That sounds pretty geeky to me

William: I love computation and solving problems in abstract space. I’m less interested computers as physical things. Which probably means I should do a Philosophy degree.

William: I’m not denying I’m a geek. I’m horrifically pedantic. I can recite too much canon from Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate and lots of other things. I’m not proud of that sometimes.

William: I don’t even watch Stargate! I got bored with it when it jumped the Goa’uld. But with Heroes and Lost I don’t think being able to recite canon in explicit detail makes you a geek anymore.

What prompted you to start writing Cat and Cthulhu?

I started writing Cat & Cthulhu well in two phases really.

First as a one off issue of Insert Name which was a weekly flash fiction website I did. That ran for two years and I got bored with it and in actual fact out grew the idea.

Second as an idea that I quite enjoyed working on. And while I was in Switzerland I was looking for a project to keep my writing skills honed while doing various computer type stuffs for a company who shall remain nameless.

My computer skills actually decreased in that year. Oh well. So I started a flash fiction blog (http://quicktale.blogspot.com) and it turned out I was writing a lot of these Cat & Cthulhu stories so I put them onto their own website.

I don’t know what prompted me to put them on the Internet though.

Or talk about them to anyone else. I think that would be my natural childish. Well maybe not childish, because adults do this as well and there is nothing inherently wrong with this emotional impulse. With my impulse to show off.

But then all art and most advances in pure sciences come from the desirer to show of. Even if it is just to prove something to ones self.

Where do you draw you inspirations from? Especially when it comes to your characters and the events in the series.

William: You’ve just asked the question everyone dreads. I can give you one answer and you’ll get another one next week.

William: In terms of characters Well they are all stuffed toys (or in the case of Marvin an action figure) that I keep next to my computer monitor to decorate it. I’ll start with Cthulhu. Since he is probably the one that requires the least explanation.

Cthulhu is a fictional monsters from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft a science fiction author from the early part of the last century. He led a very odd life and was by all accounts a very strange individual. He envisioned or at least tried to describe a rational persons horror. That is horror without the supernatural of Gods and magic.

Which do have a place in his stories. But as beings of unknowable and warped realities and in the case of magic the true physics of the universe. Cthulhu is in his scheme of things a Great Old One. Not a God. But still a being of unimaginable and remote horror. Cthulhu lives in the sea where it has been imprisoned for millions of years. For reasons I fail to remember at this moment in time.

One day Cthulhu will awaken and the world as we know it will end. Or more precisely because H.P. Lovecraft deals in timescales on the holy fuck I can’t possibly think about this. Cthulhu will awake in millions if not billions of years. Meaning it really isn’t our problem. However there is always the chance that the sleeping horror could awaken early. Which does make it our problem.

Marvin the Paranoid Android also I doubt needs much explaining. He is a fairly important character in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books, radio play, TV series and film. In the case of Cat & Cthulhu he is based on the film version. Because on my shelf above my monitor presently (this will change when I move next week) sits an action figure from the 2005 film.

Which means I’ve had the figure for two years because I bought it on my nineteenth birthday

Cat, is from the Emily the Strange franchise. I believe the character is actually called Milo. But I didn’t know this at the time I acquired Cat.

I should mention I have a small Cthulhu sitting on my desk as well. That was a present from a good friend of mine.

Why would I use these as characters in stories? Well on one level I see the fact I have a Marvin figure, a symbolic representation of a Cat and whatever Cthulhu represents, as being fairly interesting because they are kind of totems to various facets of how I see my self. That is also complete bollocks! Well kind of…there is something in that silly statement of representation but I wouldn’t run too far with it.

And the events that transpire in the story?

William: Inspirations onto the stories. Often my life. Cat & Cthulhu does at times from my point of view very often take on the characteristics of a personal journal written in rather far distant not very disguised way. For example issue twenty, ‘Pirates of Neo-Tokyo’ was written on the same weekend I went to see ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 3’. The next issue to be podcasted, ‘Master’ comes from the fact I spent a large amount of time sitting in one place for a rather annoying reason, involving trying to borrow ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 2’ from a cute lass. The story, ‘Next door to the Mountain of Madness’ is a light retelling of the H.P. Lovecraft story ‘At The Mountains of Madness.’

‘The Secret’ is me ripping into this self help concept being sold in the back of newspapers with celebrity endorsements.

The two issues after that are well based directly on imagery found in the Gamecube game Eternal Darkness. A Metropolis character from the Fritz Lang film appears next to Marvin as a love interest in that as well. Throughout the whole thing there are numerous references to a book by Hal Duncan called ‘Vellum: The Book of All Hours’.

William: The issue ‘Aquaphobia’ is based on the fact I’m terrified of rapid water. And too stupid to realize this and thus went and had another go at kayaking in rapids on a short trip into France just over the boarder into from where I used to live. Ideas come from all over. None of them are original. Picasso made that point once.

Ok, you’re up to issue 54 so far… is there a planned limit or finale?

William: Really fifty four issues? Shit! I meant to throw a party at issue fifty. No. But I think the question is in error. I’ll stop writing Cat & Cthulhu when it stops being fun and or relevant. Which at the moment it does feel a bit not fun to do. But everything has bumps. When I can see no point in continuing Cat & Cthulhu and can find a better project I’ll stop. But that isn’t planned. Just an exit condition. If that does happen though I’ve no idea how I’d end it. Maybe a planned storyline to wrap things up. But since one of the core rules of Cat & Cthulhu is have no backstory, each issue should stand on its own. I’d have reservations about doing that.

Also looking at the fact I’ve done supposedly about fifty issues in half a year that will put me at one hundred in another half year. And things will look different to how they do now because half a year will have passed not another fifty issues.

Sorry… just checked. 52

William: I’ve stopped counting I think. It doesn’t serve any purpose, the counting numbers game for me anymore. Except word counts. I’m a bit obsessed with them.

Were you surprised when the idea of a podcast came up?

William: Yes. Very.

What was your initial reaction?

William: Delighted. But surprised because Cat & Cthulhu is already such a small format thing. In terms of crunch media it takes thirty seconds to read the effort I put into each issue. And a podcast takes longer I suspect then a few hundred words of prose to produce.

William: But it doesn’t take anything away from what I do. Which means long may it continue.

I mean take away from my enjoyment by the by.

It adds to it infact.

Really? How?

William: It’s ego boosting. In a good way. Someone is putting effort into remixing and playing with stuff I’ve done. This in my mind means they obviously like what I do quite a large amount. Since A, they wouldn’t be doing something so labor intensive and B, they could just as easily be playing with their own toys. I like sharing.

Also it puts a different interpretation on Cat & Cthulhu. It might not be mine, but in terms of ‘art’ there is no wrong answer. Many eyes show many things.

And the world needs more perspective. I wish I had the benefit of knowing different interpretations of what goes on in my life. So to have it for something so trivial as Cat & Cthulhu is nice.

What would you do if the guardian or radio 4 or even yog-sothoth approached you regarding C&C or your other fiction? To (re)produce that is.

William: Shit my self with joy. Laugh for a few hours. Promptly say yes and tell them I’ll be in the pub with my friends. Also walk around with The Jokers grin for a week.

William: Then sit down with a horrible hangover and think about it. Which means a few hours later the whole experience will have been excreted into words that you’ll end up reading.

Seriously?

William: Well semi-seriously. I do digest events and occurrences by writing about them. It’s possibly the most incriminating coping method ever. I’ve enough control of my sphincter to only shit my self if offered marriage or shot, or on the bog. I’d giggle a bit certainly. I did with the Podcast. I grinned for a few hours as well for that. I’d probably be heading to the pub with my friends anyway. But I doubt that such a thing will happen. So I’ve grown content not thinking about it.

Would you take part in the podcast itself? Guest read episode 30 or something?

William: I’m tempted.

For episode 30 (The Book of All Names) I’d request a very attractive other guest voice to counter my depressive plastic but iPod like shell. Yeah I’ll say I’m ugly but well designed, eat that double meanings.

Maybe you could voice Marvin? He’s well designed

William: I assumed I’d be Marvin. I’d have to do the second half of the story as well. It is my favorite pair of stories so far.

Final question: Would the cast ever listen to a podcast like say… C&C? Oh, and do you think there’ll ever be a mass genocide perpetrated by a ancient alien monster of doom?

William: No on the podcast. That would be far to self-referential. And just breaks several gut feels I have.

Mostly irrational and unexplainable.

I mean if they were ‘real’ -would they be into that kind of thing?

William: I could make a cheap shot about politicians for that second question. I won’t. But it probably wouldn’t be genocide. There is a difference between genocide and mass-murder. Ancient alien monsters of doom probably wouldn’t target specific groups.

Oh now I have to think my my tippy toes. Marvin would ignore it. Cat would probably loath it and Cthulhu would probably love it. Boo might like it.

Marvin being smart and depressive. Cat being a pretentious and lazy. Cthulhu being silly because of his alien perspective and goofy because just look at his face. Boo is a hamster. Hamsters like stuff.

Thank you for joining us.

So what happens in this issue?
Master is startled to find his supposedly inanimate stuffed cat has arrived safely in Switzerland.

Author’s comment:
Unlucky thirteen and a terrible pun. The issue is named after a Robert
Heinlein novel I’ve never read. I do intend to read it at some point.
My parents I presume and hope have a very ‘traveled’ paperback edition
in their room somewhere. Regardless this issue marks my first physical
appearance in the overall Cat and Cthulhu narrative. Something I still
have immense reservations about doing because it opens up the horrible
gateway that lets me be more blog like and indeed take on special
powers within the stories.

Which is something I don’t intend.
Unless of course it is really funny.
Or some other arbitrary exception to the general rule of I don’t
appear I can think of and not get my head kicked in for.

This is also a fairly accurate description of the accommodation I was
living in whilst I lived in Switzerland (I’m back in the UK now). Most
of the descriptions for realistic objects (people, places, items) are
based on actual tangible things. I was the one responsible for the
broken window! I got rather excited that friends were arriving for a
BBQ and closed it too quickly causing it to well er break.

My comment is almost as long as the written issue. Expect this to be
the normal course of events for the near future. I have a lot to talk
about when it comes to certain issues because honestly a lot goes into
them. Even if it is not a lot of thought and pure reflex to my current
surroundings.

Producer’s comment:
Somehow I doubt U2’s song of the same name had little to do with a stuffed Cat on it’s quest to find his tentacled companion. I tried to do an impression of the real-life ‘Master’ (Will) but failed to quite get it. I do have however a couple of recordings of his voice but have been forbidden from publishing those… for now. I’ll be proactising my impressions for the next issue however!

Additional:
I’ve finally come up with a design for a C&C t-shirt. I’ll be making a separate dedicated post sometime in the very near future so stay tuned!

So what happens in this issue?
Cat makes a grim discovery and is hysterical, despite Marvin and Boo’s “reassurances”.

Author’s comment:
I’m sorry for the horrible pun. Really I’m so sorry.
This issue centers around well the cast mourning over Cthulhu’s death
and working how how to get him back. Because it appears stuffed toys
don’t accept greif all that well.

There is also a reference to a myth that occurs around Call of Cthulhu
roleplaying game fans.
See the story goes that a group of players by great misadventure end
up confronting Cthulhu directly. Somehow they retain enough of their
collective sanity to nuke Cthulhu.

Except in the roleplaying game canon if Cthulhu dies s/he/it returns
in half an hour at full strength. So thirty minutes pass and Cthulhu
once again appears to traumatize these group of players. Except this
time s/he/it is highly radioactive.

There is humor in this if you are of a certain mindset.
Probably the kind that plays Call of Cthulhu.

Producer’s comment:
The second part of this week’s double-bill of podcasts.

As you might have found out from my writings or profile pictures I
have very long hair. I think that I wrote this issue at Easter 2007.
My brothers first words to me were along the lines of,”Leo! Lion!
Mane!” This at two in the morning after getting back to Leicester from
a red eye flight from Switzerland. So put these words in my mind.
Shake and bake for a little while and this is what came out.

Author’s comment:
Well this took place in April. I was at a gaming convention for
university societies in Edinburgh. I was playing Call of Cthulhu. I
had a very enjoyable time. This is a short description of what the end
of my first game at the gig was. Needless to say I’m not much of a fan
of bacon anymore. I seem to like the word fawn a lot.

Maybe this says something about my personality.

Producer’s comment:
This issue was awkward to do on account of it being so long. Took quite a few takes and I’m still not quite satisfied. Sorry for the delayed publication only I’ve recently started a new full-time job so that’s taken most of my previously “free” time. I do wish I was a Jedi sometimes.
I suspect the funky wuxia inspired powers would come in handy.
My long ginger hair would make for light saber fights that look just awesome.
Like an organic cape. With extra ruffian.

The pledge of poverty (which I have unofficially taken) isn’t that
appealing mind.
But if I was a new trilogy era Jedi – I could kill Jar Jar.
Also you get to whizz around a galaxy having ‘adventures’ and I sure
hope the celibacy thing is a guideline. Because I seem to remember
some really hot lady Jedi’s.

What other comment do you want?
I like Star Wars. I like Cthulhu. I wrote a mix and mash and tried to
do it in the least terrible way I could.
Enjoy.

Author’s comment:
I really need to sleep at the moment. I went climbing on Thursday.
Zurich on Friday night and then back on the train to Basel. Then
Zurich was visited again on Saturday. Today I went kayaking. There
were rapids and I know fear personally now. Never again!

None of this has anything to do with this issue of Cat & Cthulhu. Well
except I’d really like to curl up in a ball. Possibly in a fetal
position. Hopefully with a cute lass fawning over me trying to being
me out of my catatonic state.

A fact about this issue. Erm that cookbook really is on my shelf next
to my Marvin action figure.

W. Ellwood

Producer’s comment:
Apologies for publishing late this week. I did have an episode ready to go on Thursday but I wasn’t completely happy with it. So I reworked it slightly today and it seems a lot better now, at least to me anyway. I’ve also been dealing with my forthcoming engagement party and my fiancee has been busy using the computer for dissertation work. Mostly.

Producer’s comment:
I enjoyed making this episode, more so than the last one. After rehearsing the script it only needed two takes to get the whole thing down. Instead of making distinct voices I’m much happier with just putting more feeling into the characters. It still feels a little strange though, talking to a webcam microphone. Maybe one day I’ll have the chance to produce an episode in a studio… now where is that BBC7 phone number…?

Authors comment:
I like this issue. But I am a bit bias because it actually happened!
Well the ice skating bit did. It was the only time I fell that day.
Ice skating really is scary. Although it gets easier. Kind of. I don’t
like clowns that much either. However I do like clowning around.

Producer’s comment:
In this episode I experimented with more distinct character voices, but I don’t think it worked too well. At one point during “rehearsal” Cthulhu either sounded like Brian Blessed, and at another time like Hans Gruber from ‘Allo ‘Allo. I think I’ll voice future episodes like I did with the first two for the moment.

Hello everyone. Just a quick entry to bring you the news that Cat & Cthulhu is now featured on the iTunes Store at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=257472082, with some new subscriptions after just a couple of days.

As you probably guessed this blog and it’s feed exist not only for your listening pleasure but also for myself to gain more technical experiance with podcasting, and what a steep learning curve indeed! I gained most of my knowledge from the rather simply named: http://www.how-to-podcast-tutorial.com/ Now it’s an ok tutorial but is getting a bit dated. Some of the sections becoming more guidelines than actual tutorials. For example, the chicklet code-adding video is redundant since Feedburner now has a utility to add one directly to your appropriate blog. Exploring everything is the key here.

So, since this is a “experimental” blog I wouldn’t expect it to be fully featured or customised. That will come with the official production blog and feed. Don’t worry though – I will be sure to continute posting episodes here until such time when the proper site is completed and you’ve all edited your ‘bookmarks’.

So happy listening – our next episode will be released this coming Wednesday: “Episode 3 [III? – Editor] – In the Words of Obi-Wan”
