a New Socially Integrated Web Browser!

    Wow! - is all I can say about this new Social Web Browser from the makers of Mozilla and Netscape. It's called "Flock" and it certainly is flying high above the rest of the pack!

Give me a browser that will package my whole social life into one place - allowing me to interact with all my friends and family on the various social networking sites available - in a user-friendly and innovative way - well, then you've won me over already!

After noticing that my Netscape Browser was out of date today after doing a user-test on a recent web design on it, I came to realize that they (Netscape) were actually discontinuing the support for this product and at the same time were actually promoting something apparently far more advanced and futuristic. It was a browser that incorporated all of Mozilla's nuts and bolts but also added an extra dimension to it by allowing users to interact and share with each other in a fashion only previously dreamed about. Of course Flock is going to be a winner - no doubt. It has latched on to current trends in social networking and put this all together into one place.

Social networks have been growing rapidly over the past year with more and more people logging on to sites such as Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Flickr. The need for people to interact and share with each other in real-time is becoming an essential mix and is directing the future of the Internet for the years to come.

Flock offers the user the ability to share not just text and photos but entire video as well. It also integrates with sites such as YouTube so that you can share footage between your network of friends easily. It can import all of your Favourites settings from Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or an external file and if you like to use online
favorite-sharing websites as well, then Flock's integrated tools are for you.

With built in feed tracking (for both ATOM and RSS feeds) it means that keeping up to date with news sites or blog sites is as simple as clicking a link and it means you can also become a news provider yourself by hosting your own blog.

Lastly, but not least - the real coup for Flock is how it manages all the above, creating a very personal and user-friendly experience. It literally "flocks" together all your important stuff putting it into a singular place and making it extremely easy to access and use.
This place is aptly named ''My World' and it is here that it collects together all of your favorite web sites, feeds and media, and puts
it all just one click away. You can also easily personalize your My World page and many
aspects of the Flock browser interface.

I have only just started to get to grips with the powerful Flock interface and I admit it is like starting to learn how to drive again - daunting at first - however I can already see after only about 1 hour of using it that this browser is here to stay, and poses a definite threat in the browser-war between Netscape (Mozilla) and Microsoft (Internet Explorer). I must admit that I can see myself becoming seriously addicted to Flock especially when I am feeling in one of those more sociable moods however I will not be binning my Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. I always say the "more the merrier" and I will embrace all three browsers- combining the positives of each one to suit my work mode.

To download Flock visit : http://www.flock.com/

Bulletin News Report concerning website and email downtime this morning

Due to an issue with the air conditioning in the London Data centre, Customers maybe experiencing intermittent problems connecting to their websites and/or Virtual Servers. However I decided it had to be done - I was paying far too much money each month for a service that could be equalled if not bettered elsewhere for almost half the price. So I gave the techies at Virgin Media - the now parent company of NTL - and arranged for switch over to Virgin Broadband. All this took was a simple phone call and a few redirects to get to the right place to register.

They advised me that I could get up to 8MB broadband speed for a mere £19.99 per month. Well, I couldn't possibly pass up on this offer could I, and as Virgin have merged (well, I say taken over!) NTL it seemed the logical step to take.

Going back to the previous debacle with my neighbours broadband set up using Tiscali, I had recurring nightmares over the next few weeks as I waited for my new ADSL modem and CD to arrive, fearing that I might suffer similar problems that she encountered. Her new PC had Windows Vista pre-installed and it was because of this that so many problems arose when setting up her broadband, although you would think that an ISP such as Tiscali would alert you to any minor problems that you may encounter using Vista. Anyway I tried setting up her broadband with her previous modem but to no avail. We couldn't even get past the initial driver set up. Vista just plainly wasn't having any of it. After many calls to Tiscali's support centre and about 2 hours later, they determined that this problem was to do with her modem not being compatible with Vista - and said they would send a new one out.
"Just plug the new one in and you will be able to connect straight away", were the words of the Tiscali representative as we finished the conversation - words which simply prove false as it later transpired.
When the new router arrived with its CD (a speedtouch 330) we follow the simple instructions to the letter to install it on her PC. Nope, still no connection, so a couple more calls to Support later and we finally get a connection. For about 20 minutes! Then it all messes up again. Whatever they guy had done at his end - it failed to hold out. So back to square one, I call their support again and I am told that the new broadband modem needs new drivers to make it compatible with Vista!! They sent me out a new broadband modem which was still not compatible with Vista, and then they proceeded to tell me I would need to order the Driver CD online. Oh great! - now I have to wait another few days for this to arrive. What a pallava - all this messing about just to be back at square one after over 1 week of communications with Tiscali. Anyway to cut a long story short - we finally managed to get her PC up and running with everything installed, firewalled, connected to the Internet etc etc after about 10 days of trying.
So as you may think I was somewhat cautious when my Virgin Broadband package arrived in the post the other day - running a business from home and not having internet access is a web designers worst nightmare.

So with caution, I proceeded to set up my new Virgin Broadband and guess how long it took me to get my Internet connection back online with Virgin Broadband.......YES, thats right....4 minutes 26 seconds!!!! Must be a world record. My only gripe with Virgin Broadband was the lack of communication initially to tell me that my card details needed to be punched in again at their end before I could become activated. This had put me back about half a day in downtime. But I phoned them up and on the second or third call my problem was resolved and all i needed to do was give them my Card details again so they could take payment and get me activated. About 20 minutes later their representative called me and said I was ready to rock and roll!. Well Mr Branson, you certainly do ROCK!. I now have a much faster broadband connection than i ever had for half the price i was paying before.

Well done Virgin Media - I take my hat off to you!

Temporary Loss of Services

March 10th 2007 - 14:15pm

To all Future IT Services' clients:

Please be aware that currently all services are down.

Your webhosts are currently investigating an issue in IP House London. She chose Yell.com to design and host her site, thinking that it was the ideal option as they are a large reputable company. What she got was a couple of very raw and unattractive web pages with very minor details about her business. After a few years of basically not getting what she wanted, wasted hours hanging on the phone after being put on hold, needing to make edits to her site but not being listened to, Anne decided to call it a day and get some outside help.

Her brother-in-law Richard, a Princes Trust mentor, decided to get in touch with Future IT Services (our business was initially helped by The Trust so there was common ground already) on her behalf to see if we could help produce a website that would fit their image. Of course we were only too delighted to be of assistance and over the course of a few weeks we put together a nice, quaint little website complete with online gallery, map location finder, upcoming events page and much more.

Now they have a trendy website which fits their needs entirely. Of course there will be regular updates to the site which Future IT Services is only too prepared to cater for and which was in fact included in the modest £500 price.

Feathers can be found by visiting http://www.feathersofhurstpierpoint.co.uk

Network Upgrade on 8th February - The theme for the site - simplistic and professional, using light blue as the main colour. It is to be a 5 page website to include press cutting reviews, some live recordings and a diary section. Uses an animated gif banner across the top of all the pages to give some character to the site. Feel free to take a look at the current site (which is still in design stage at the moment).
Matthew Cooke | Musician | Chichester

LEGEND COMMUNICATIONS STATUS PAGE

DEAR CUSTOMERS,

FIRST OF ALL - APOLOGIES FOR THE VARIOUS EMAIL AND WEB PAGE PROBLEMS THAT YOU MAY HAVE ENCOUNTERED LAST WEEK (13-15TH SEPTEMBER 2006). It involves creating an external XML document to describe elements such as photos, captions, titles etc for the XML Photo Gallery, creating a schema, linking that schema with the XML document and then loading that XML document from within Flash in order to add the content to the gallery. Here are the steps taken to implement our application.
1. Create the XML object.
2. Set the ignoreWhite property to true
3. Specify the name of the function that will deal with the loaded XML document.
4. Load the XML document.
5. Within the load function, test whether the file has loaded successfully.
6. Display the document tree with a trace action to check contents load correctly.
7. Set a variable referring to the RootNode of the XML document.
8. Work through the document tree, adding content to the Flash movie.

As i said before I used Actionscript version 2.0 and version 2.0 components in Flash MX 2004 for this project.

Rather than run through the whole design process I will instead give a quick explanation of what needs to be addressed.
Firstly set up the enivironment in Flash - ie. create an interface for the gallery. I used a static field to contain the text heading "Photo Gallery" and two dynamic text fields, one on the left for the caption and one on the right for the comments about the image. Give them both instance names. Create an empty movie clip called empty_mc below the caption to display the photos. Create a ComboBox component, gallery_cb, with two named buttons, back and forward for navigation.
Now create the XML document. I used an app called Microsoft XML Notepad to create my XML document but you can just as well use Notepad or similar - just ensure to save as UTF-8 and as .xml file extension. The advantage of using the application above is that you can check to see if your document is well-formed on-the-fly. If you need help with creating XML documents visit here for more information or buy a decent book.

The nodes (which should be in between <>) that i used in hierarchical order were:
1. photoGallery - being the RootNode,
2. location locationname="galleryName" - being the child element of the RootNode(locationName is an attribute),
3. photo filename="filename.jpg" caption="caption content" - as the final child element with attributes (or grandchild element depending on how you want to look at it)

Next you will need to in this order:

Load the XML document into the Flash movie.

Load the ComboBox component.

Add and event listener to the ComboBox.

Load the photos.

Conifigure the buttons.

To do all this create a new layer in the gallery.fla file and name it actions. Add the following code to the actions layer by copying and pasting (Ctrl+C followed by Ctrl+V):

// Global (timeline) Variables
var RootNode:XMLNode;
var
selectedGallery:String;
var photoPosition:Number;
var
GalleryNode:XMLNode;
var PhotoNode:XMLNode;
// disable buttons to stop
navigation till after
// we've selected an image gallery
back_btn.enabled
= false;
forward_btn.enabled = false;
//Load XML document into
Flash
var photoXML:XML = new XML();
photoXML.ignoreWhite =
true;
photoXML.onLoad=loadPhotos;
photoXML.load("photoGallery.xml");
stop();
//
Add event listener to ComboBox
var CBOListener:Object = new
Object();
CBOListener.change =
loadGallery;
gallery_cb.addEventListener("change", CBOListener);
// Make
the back and forward buttons work.
back_btn.onRelease = function():Void
{
if(PhotoNode.previousSibling.nodeName != undefined)
{
photoPosition--;
loadPhoto(photoPosition);
}
}
forward_btn.onRelease
= function():Void {
if(PhotoNode.nextSibling.nodeName != undefined)
{
photoPosition++;
loadPhoto(photoPosition);
}
}
// Function for
loading XML object and calling the loadCombo
// function after successfully
doing so.
function loadPhotos(success:Boolean):Void{
if(success)
{
RootNode = this.firstChild;
loadCombo();
}
else {
trace("Error
in loading XML file");
}
}
// function to load ComboBox
component.
function loadCombo():Void {
var
galleryName:String;
gallery_cb.addItem("-- Select --");
for (var
i:Number=0; i< RootNode.childNodes.length; i++) {
galleryName =
RootNode.childNodes[i].attributes.locationName;
gallery_cb.addItem(galleryName);
}
}
//
Function to find if gallery is selected and sets the variable
//
selectedGallery. For more detailed explanations onwhat is going on here I would advise buying Sas Jacob's book, XML for Flash,ISBN: 1-59059-543-2 as it explains everything you will need to know about XMLand Flash and in particular this PhotoGallery Application.

I am now going off to implement a dynamic Photo Gallery using server side technology, and will tell you all about it once I have it completed!

Good Luck and see you next time.

Lee Pearman - Future IT Services - email

Webmaster Tools and SEO Software Resources :: Webmaster Toolkit

Webmaster Tools and SEO Software Resources :: Webmaster Toolkit

This website is an excellent research and learning tool for budding professionals within the Web Industry. I found this site by accident but was so impressed that I had to comment on it. It provides a comprehensive list of important SEO tools and all for free!.

I use it personally as my one stop library, when dealing with Search Engine Optimisation on my various sites. It not only includes most current and up to date tools for all aspects of Web marketing but it also provides links to other resources such as Link Machine. This is a link exchange software which specifically promotes natural organic link building (which by the way has recently been endorsed by Google) in an attempt to pry peoples habits away from opting for unnatural and illegitimate link building practices such as using Link Farms.

The site provides everything you need at a click of a mouse button. If you dont believe me - then just check it out for yourself and make your decision!

Lee Pearman
Future IT Services

FUTURE IT SERVICES TOOLBAR ADD ON

Hi there readers,

Hope you are all well and looking forward to the imminent Christmas festivities. She is a horse riding tutor, who would like to record the lessons she has with her students onto a recordable DAT machine (or something similar), transfer this file onto her hard drive, convert it into an MP3, and then upload this onto a website for her students to then download onto their ipods to listen to later, after entering a user name and password accessing their particular "lesson" file.

I am still attempting to get my head around this, but I am presuming that this idea is basic podcasting correct me if I am wrong - the only difference being that access is limited to just the one individual rather than a whole host of people - which can surely be done by either javascripting a password into the HTML code (less secure) on the link to the RSS feed, or (better still) having a small content management system in PHP/MySQL for example; to accept logons for each student to gain access to their "lesson" folder and ultimate ipod download link???
However, having not used an i-pod (sigh - I know, im letting myself slip behind the times!!) I was wondering if there was any expert advice out there that could be passed my way to help me decide if the project is do-able. I have researched using google and found lots of useful information about itunes, ipodder, aggregators, RSS Builder, Audacity, etc... but any feedback that can provide me with a simple solution to this, perhaps listed in in a methodical way, would be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise I guess its back to Google and thinking of search terms to get the answers to the many questions I still have!

Many thanks and look forward to hearing any comments on this

Lee Pearman
Future IT Services

10 steps to higher search engine position

More News from Future IT Services

Search Engine Optimisation - 10 steps to higher search engine position.

Did you know that there are many legitimate and sure-fire ways of getting higher search engine position that avoid having to use cheating methods or unethical search engine practices such as spamming and cloaking?

In an article I read recently by evolt.org I agree entirely that if you follow the Rules of Thumb when dealing with search engines, you are more likely to do well in the long-term for your website than if you choose to go with the fast-track option that many companies are now offering for "guaranteed Top 10 results in 14 days"

It is well known that search engines are becoming more diligent in these practices and are also becoming more militant when it comes to sites trying to cheat their way to the top so it does not bode well to go down this route, especially since they (search engines) ultimately have the power of authority and can ban you completely from their listings - a huge error to be made on any business' part.

Simply put, there are ten major steps to good optimisation (there are obviously plenty of other things you can do to increase your rankings and position - but these 10 are generally considered a definite yes-yes when it comes to following simple rules outlined by most if not all the search engines.

1. Choosing Keywords
2. Site Content
3. Site Structure
4. Optimisation
5. Internal Linking
6. Human Testing
7. Submissions
8. Link Building
9. Monitoring
10.Reward yourself!!

To read more detail about these steps I suggest you visit the evolt.org website to gain more insight. They are an excellent source of information and I credit them entirely for providing this article.

Christmas Break

Office is closed from 23rd December till 5th January
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
See you all in 2005
