What is a Trust?

A trust is a binding arrangement where a person leaves either money or property ‘upon trust’ to another person who is the ‘trustee’. The trustees will then be responsible for using the trust fund and ensuring the individual(s), called the beneficiaries, benefit from it. These arrangements can be made in the form of a trust deed, or as part of your will, meaning the trust will start after your death.

Why Should I Set Up a Trust?

Setting up a trust means you can leave money or property to a family member without them having to worry about dealing with the responsibility of looking after it. It may be that you have a son or daughter with learning difficulties and you want to ensure that they will be provided for, but someone else will be in charge of looking after that money. Or it may be that you want a family member to have your property or sum of money but not until they’re aged 18 or 21. A trust also allows you to dictate what that money should be spent on or what should happen to your house.
