Excellent Warm up Activity for Building Rapport in Action Learning

Rapport between people in an action learning group is essential for its success

Why?

Most participants need to feel at ease with their fellow group members before presenting a problem, challenge or an issue.

It is the role of the action learning facilitator to model good rapport and encourage a group to open up.

To encourage rapport I generally start off with the following activity:

'6 Things' - Action Learning Warm Up

Give all group members a handout which has the following written statements:

What is THE question?

When I was training as a coach, we did this micro coaching session where we were challenged to come up with the ‘killer question’. Am not convinced about the word, but the sentiment and discipline is there: the possibility of listening deeply and being so perceptive, present and plucky, that you could ask a question to serve the other in a significant and transformational way.

Video games have changed the way we play; they're now set to change working life as well. If you don't already know what a stronghold games have on contemporary culture, it's time to find out. Here's one measure: video games are now bigger than Hollywood.

Learning evaluation: Research methods

Kenneth Fee and Dr Alasdair Rutherford talk the community through the various research methods of evaluation.

With so much choice of tools and approaches to the evaluation of learning, the research methods used to gather data can often be overlooked. But if you are to gather robust evidence of the impact of your training you need to both select the right methods and implement them well.

Many freelance trainers tell me that they worry about the whole business of pricing more than anything else and the main fear seems to be that if they are too expensive they won’t get any work. But you also have to take the view that if you are too cheap you won’t have a viable business. A lot of people who are on the other side – Training Managers in corporate – as I once was – will look at what you are charging per day and think ‘It’s alright for some ….’

Why we have to rethink critical thinking skills

We’re familiar with critical thinking from our university days. It’s what you are meant to be doing, after all, alongside all the partying and studying. But now, the current harsh economic conditions and competitive environment demand from all of us a rethink of critical thinking, AND a trainer who is able to effectively develop and hone these skills in themselves and others. Why is this?

A couple of weeks ago we had lovely weather. If like me, you tend to be a bit solar powered, you’ll have loved it too. I focused on being outside as much as possible, enjoyed walking the dog, seeing the first blue bells coming out and watching the squirrels jump from tree to tree.

If you’ve ever had a dog, you’ll know that dog walking can be one of the most sociable past times – and if you do the same route often enough you’ll bump into familiar faces (dogs and owners) and often stop for a brief chat.

Simon Drury shares some insights into the continuing need for personal significance, particularly after leaving the usual workplace.

Why we work

Work is an integral part of our lives. It enables us to establish our credibility in society, demonstrate our skills and capabilities and achieve our goals and aspirations. It affords us the opportunity to express our individuality and our commitment.

Training software: Technical barriers that trainers face at decision time

I’m experiencing it with the Kindle at the moment.

I know, at the back of my mind, that it makes perfect sense. More space for essentials in the suitcase, easier to manage on the commute and far more cost effective – so, what’s the problem?

e-Learning

Hi everyone,

I create bespoke e-learning using UPK and i'm sourcing potential new software solutions.

If there is anyone out there that creates/uses e-learning could you please advise what package you use and roughly how long it takes to create a new piece of e-learning (for IT software & processes).

Any information would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
