DEFINITION:
Toxicity
Toxicity is the degree to which a substance is able to damage an exposed organism. Toxicity can refer to the effect on a whole organism, such as an animal, bacterium, or plant, as well as the effect on a substructure of the organism, such as a cell or an organ, such as the liver.

Activated Sludge
The term "activated sludge" refers to a brownish flocculent culture of organisms developed in aeration tanks under controlled conditions. It is also Sludge floc produced in raw or settled waste water by the growth of zoological bacteria and other organisms in the presence of dissolved oxygen. Activated sludge is normally brown in colour.

Alkalinity
The capacity of water to neutralize acids, a property imparted by the water's content of carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and occasionally borates, silicates, and phosphates. Alkaline fluids have a pH value over 7

Anaerobic
A biological environment that is deficient in all forms of oxygen, especially molecular oxygen, nitrates and nitrites. The decomposition by microorganisms of waste organic matter in wastewater in the absence of dissolved oxygen is classed as anaerobic.

Anoxic
A biological environment that is deficient in molecular oxygen, but may contain chemically bound oxygen, such as nitrates and nitrites.

Bacteria
Bacteria are microscopic living organisms They are a group of universally distributed, rigid, essentially unicellular, microscopic organisms lacking chlorophyll. They are characterized as spheroids, rod-like, or curved entities, but occasionally appearing as sheets, chains, or branched filaments.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
The BOD test is used to measure the strength of wastewater. The BOD of wastewater determines the milligrams per liter of oxygen required during stabilization of decomposable organic matter by aerobic bacteria action. Also, the total milligrams of oxygen required over a five-day test period to biologically assimilate the organic contaminants in one liter of wastewater maintained at 20 degrees Centigrade.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
The milligrams of oxygen required to chemically oxidize the organic contaminants in one liter of wastewater.

Composite Sample
To have significant meaning, samples for laboratory tests on wastewater should be representative of the wastewater. The best method of sampling is proportional composite sampling over several hours during the day. Composite samples are collected because the flow and characteristics of the wastewater are continually changing. A composite sample will give a representative analysis of the wastewater conditions.

Denitrification
A biological process by which nitrate is converted to nitrogen gas.

Digestion
The biological decomposition of organic matter in sludge resulting in partial gasification, liquefaction, and mineralization of putrescible and offensive solids.

Disenfection
The killing of pathogenic organisms is called disinfection.

Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
The oxygen dissolved in water, wastewater, or other liquid. DO is measured in milligrams per liter. If the DO of a sample of water is 2 mg/L, it means that there are 2lbs of oxygen in 1 mil lb of water.

Dissolved Solids
Solids that cannot be removed by filtering are dissolved solids.

Extended Aeration
A modification of the activated sludge process which provides for aerobic sludge digestion within the aeration system.

Floc
Clumps of bacteria and particles that have come together to form clusters, or small gelatinous masses. The floc mass in an activated sludge aeration tank generally consists of microorganisms.

Grease
In wastewater, a group of substances, including fats, waxes, free fatty acids, calcium and magnesium soaps, mineral oils, and certain other non-fatty materials.

Milligrams per Liter (mg/L)
A unit of concentration of water or wastewater constituent. It is 0.001 g of the constituent in 1000 ml of water. The unit parts per million is identical to milligrams per liter.

Mixed Liquor (ML)
The mixture of activated sludge, wastewater, and oxygen, wherein biological assimilation occurs.

Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS)
The milligrams of suspended solids per liter of mixed liquor that are combustible at 550 degrees Centigrade. An estimate of the quantity of MLSS to be wasted from the aeration tank of an extended aeration plant may be determined by the rate of settling and centrifuge tests on the sludge solids.

Nitrification
The conversion of nitrogen matter into nitrates by bacteria.

Nitrogen
Nitrogen is present in wastewater in many forms: total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, organic nitrogen.

Nitrogen Cycle
The cycle of life, death, and decay involving organic nitrogenous matter is known as the nitrogen cycle. In the nitrogen cycle ammonia is produced from proteins.

Oxic
A biological environment which is aerobic

Polyphosphate
A large compound formed of several orthophosphate molecules connected by phosphate-storing microorganisms.

Raw Wastewater
Wastewater before it receives any treatment.

Reactor
A tank where a wastewater stream is mixed with bacterial sludge and biochemical reactions occur.

Return Sludge
Settled activated sludge returned to mix with incoming raw or primary settled wastewater. When the return sludge rate in the activated sludge process is too low, there will be insufficient organisms to meet the waste load entering the aerator.

Return Activated Sludge
Activated return sludge is normally returned continuously to the aeration tank. Recycling of activated sludge back to the aeration tank provides bacteria for incoming wastewater. Its should be brown in color with no obnoxious odor and is often also returned in small portions to the primary settling tanks to aid sedimentation. Settled activated sludge is generally thinner than raw sludge. Some activated sludge will be wasted to prevent excessive solids build up.

Sludge Age
In the activated sludge process, a measure of the length of time a particle of suspended solids has been undergoing aeration, expressed in day. It is usually computed by dividing the weight of the suspended solids in the aeration tank by the weight of excess activated sludge discharged from the system per day.

Sludge Digestion
The purpose of sludge digestion is to separate the liquid from the solids to facilitate drying. The proper pH range for digested sludge is 6.8 - 7.2.

Sludge Reaeration
The continuous aeration of sludge after initial aeration for the purpose of improving or maintaining its condition.

Splitter Box
A division box that splits the incoming flow into two or more streams. A device for splitting and directing discharge from the head box to two separate points of application.

Wastewater
Domestic wastewater is 99.9% water and 0.1% solids. Fresh wastewater is usually slightly alkaline. If the pH of the raw wastewater is 8.0, it indicates that the sample is alkaline. If wastewater has a pH value of 6.5, it means that it is acid. Wastewater is said to be septic when it is undergoing decomposition.

How Pumps Work

All rotary pumping systems (Fig) contain a drive
system. The driver is what makes the pump rotate.
There are several types of drivers (i.e. electric motor,
combustion engine or steam turbines, etc.). Often, but
not always, pumping systems contain a coupling, which
attaches the driver to the rotary shaft of the pump. A
bearing arrangement supports the shaft. The bearings
may be any of several types (i.e. sleeve bushings, ball,
roller, etc.) Normally, there are two bearings that support
the shaft (thrust bearing and radial bearing). Attached to
the shaft is the impeller. A volute shrouds the impeller.
Within the volute, the rotation of the impeller increases
media velocity and pressure. The media being transported
enters the pump through the suction inlet and exits
the volute through the discharge outlet at a greater pressure
and velocity. The rotating element extends through
the stationary housing of the pump in which some type of
sealing device has been or can be installed. This housing
or cavity is known as the stuffing box for packing or seal
chamber for mechanical seal applications.
Although somewhat simplified (there are all types of
service variations and designs, some of which may contradict
this description), the above can be considered a
general description of how most rotary pumps function.

Who Uses Mechanical Seals?

Everyone in the industrialized world uses mechanical
seals. Various pieces of rotary or rotating equipment,
pumps in particular, depend on mechanical seals to control
leakage. Familiar rotary equipment devices include
automobile water pumps, washing machines, dish washers,
compressors, swimming pool pumps and farm service
pumps. Mechanical seals are used anywhere that
liquid and gases are transferred by rotating equipment.
Pumps are one of the most widely sold pieces of equipment
in industry, second only to electric motors. Pumps
are found in all industries, large buildings and households,
farming operations, mining, construction and city
services. Although some of the small, inexpensive
pumps are disposable (i.e. automotive water pumps),
most pumps require packing or mechanical seals to control
leakage between the rotating elements and stationary
housings. These packings and seals must be serviced to
insure controlled leakage is maintained.
Maintenance of pumping systems is what we will focus on
in the following sections. We will learn that some products
are allowed to drip without concern, while others must not
leak more than a few parts per million (PPM) and need
to be monitored closely with electronic detection devices.

Positive displacement (PD) pumps are not well understood by most
users and specifiers. Properly applied, PD pumps offer significant
opportunities to improve processes, improve efficiencies, and reduce
costs.PD pumps come in many designs and operating ranges, but they all work
on the same principle. An increasing volume is opened to suction, filled,
closed, moved to discharge, and displaced. The delivered capacity is
nearly constant throughout the discharge pressure range. This constant
capacity will intersect a system curve at a defined point, allowing a high
degree of system control.PD pumps create flow, centrifugal pumps create pressure. In a PD
pump, flow is created by enclosing a volume at suction, moving it to
discharge, and releasing it. Pressure is created by the system's response to
flow. If there was no connection at the discharge flange, the flow would
exit the pump at atmospheric pressure. Centrifugal pumps create pressure
by first imparting velocity to the fluid with the impeller, then converting
the velocity to pressure with the volute. If there was no discharge flange
connection, the flow would exit the pump with that developed pressure.
The system requirements will determine the type of pump required in
most, but not all, cases. If a system calls for a pressurized network of
piping with a constant pressure at various flow rates, a centrifugal pump is
the best option. An example of this type of system is municipal water. In
this system, a PD pump would be less efficient.
Oil pipelines normally require a constant flow at various pressures. At a
constant flow rate, pipeline pressure will vary with changes in viscosity.
Pipelines transport different products with different viscosities and
pressures. Product cooling will increase viscosity and pressure. This is of
concern if a pipeline is temporarily shut down then restarted. A centrifugal
may not be able to
produce a high enough pressure to clear the line. A PD pump willovercome the pressure and restart flow
Fuel delivery systems require a constant fuel flow to control turbines or
boilers. Pressure may vary as nozzles become clogged or erode open, but
flow requirement remains constant. PD pumps supply a steady source of
power. Centrifugal pumps would require recirculation to meet
requirements.
Process systems frequently involve batch operations where products are
circulated through reactors as the viscosity changes. Pressure and flow
requirements are flexible. At the end of the batch, the vessels are pumped
out. The pump must be able to handle the full range of viscosities as well
as stripping and dry running.
Shear sensitive fluids may require PD pumps to avoid the high shearing
action of centrifugal impellers. Most PD pumps operate with laminar
internal flow regimes.

We’ll be honest — after seeing TomTom’s best efforts on its flagship GO 740 LIVE, we couldn’t be happier to witness a new user interface for the outfit’s PNDs.

After taking the wraps off of the GO 950, GO 750 and GO 550 yesterday at IFA, the good folks over at Mobility Minded were able to take a quick peek at some UI improvements that’ll ship on the new trio. Aside from just looking entirely more modern, TomTom also added a “Live” tab that gives drivers quick access to upcoming traffic, the cheapest gas nearby and the location of fixed and mobile safety cameras. Windows Mail is a free email and newsgroup client Microsoft introduced in Windows Vista to succeed Outlook Express. Samsung WB5000: hands-on with a 24x zoom featherweight

When not concerned with the futility of existence we know what has your mind preoccupied: just how manly is Samsung’s WB5000? With a 24x optical zoom, full manual control option, ISO 6400 sensitivity, and RAW format support it’s just gotta be a heaving mass of elongating gadget hedonism, right? Well, no… at least not physically. Granted, our nerdceps are tuned to negate the shutter recoil of Nikon’s beastly D300 DSLR. But the WB5000 feels surprisingly light, hollow even.
Now the weight of a super-zoom camera, in general, has nothing to do with image quality. But the size to weight ratio was surprising nonetheless, and a stark reminder that the WB5000 is nothing more than a massive 26mm Schneider-KREUZNACH lens with compact-camera quality components inside its chunky posterior. We’ll reserve judgment until we, or someone else, can grab a unit for a full review. ‘Till then, you know where to find more pics.

Windows 7 Ultimate Cracked and Activated Permanently with OEM SLP Master Product Key (with SLIC 2.1)

Windows 7 Ultimate has been cracked, and can be permanently activated with OEM style instant offline activation which will pass Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation, before even any Windows 7 is officially released according to Windows 7 release schedule. All hell breaks loose when a Windows 7 Ultimate OEM DVD ISO from Lenovo been leaked and posted on Chinese forum. The ISO was quickly grabbed to retrieve boot.wim, which was then used to retrieve the OEM-SLP product key and OEM certificate for Windows 7 Ultimate.

Microsoft has updated the the SLP (System-Locked Preinstallation), a procedure that used to preactivate Windows operating system for mass distribution by major OEM (original equipment manufacturers), to version 2.1 to support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 while provided backward-compatibility for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 activation. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 OEM activation is provided by SLP 2.0. SLP 2.1 requires SLIC imprinted in BIOS to be updated to SLIC version 2.1 too, which contains new Windows Marker.

After extracting the OEM certificate and OEM product key, it’s confirmed that Windows 7 uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate (in .xrm-ms extension) that is been used in Windows Vista. Windows Vista OEM cert can be used in Windows 7 has been explained in Windows 7 forum. As OEM certificate is digitally signed by Microsoft with its own Private Key with OEM Public Key and OEMID (part of SLIC table in BIOS). The combination of correct Private Key, Public Key with OEMID will pass SLP validation as valid Microsoft license. Meanwhile, Windows Marker is signed by OEM itself based on OEMID and OEMTableID (both belongs to SLIC) using the private key that matches the public key. Thus, the same OEM cert can be used for many different SLICs, as long as OEMID remains the same, as in the case of SLP 2.0 and SLP 2.1, although Windows Marker has changed due to different OEMTableID.

The trick is to have BIOS modded to include the SLIC 2.1. The SLIC 2.1 can be modded into BIOS physically (hardmod or biosmod) or been emulated or simulated during Windows boots up (softmod). Various SLIC 2.1 BIN has been retrieved from various notebook computer that shipped with new SLIC 2.1 in BIOS to support the free Windows 7 Upgrade Option from Windows Vista. If you just bought a new PC, it’s possible to check if SLIC 2.1 exists in BIOS. The information can be used to mod the BIOS. If you’re not technically know-how, it’s possible to request for BIOS mod assistant, or wait for Windows 7 Loader or WoW7.

Last but not least (which makes no activation crack works properly so far) is OEM-SLP product key for Windows 7. So far no OEM-SLP product key required to activate Windows 7 as OEM offline instant activation been leaked yet as no machine has been officially ship in Windows 7 by OEM, until now.

The extracted Windows 7 Ultimate OEM-SLP product key, 22TKD-F8XX6-YG69F-9M66D-PMJBM, can be used to activate installed Windows 7 Ultimate system, which BIOS has a valid OEM SLIC 2.1, and corresponding OEM cert, even if it’s OEM cert meant for Windows Vista. Best news is that, the product key appears to be a master OEM-SLP product key for Windows 7 Ultimate, which able to activate many OEM brands, such as HP, Dell, MSI and Lenovo. Tip: It doesn’t matter if you have download and install Windows 7 RTM retail version ISO or Windows 7 RTM OEM version ISO. Just use the following commands to convert to OEM version:

slmgr.vbs -ilc OEM.XRM-MS (where OEM.XRM-MS is a valid OEM cert matching with SLIC 2.1 in BIOS)
slmgr -ipk 22TKD-F8XX6-YG69F-9M66D-PMJBM

Both 32-bit and 64-bit (x86 and x64) Windows 7 Ultimate system should and can be activated immediately. For Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Home Basic, and Windows 7 Starter, the OEM-SLP keys haven’t been leaked, thus can’t be OEM-activated yet. It’s expected that various Windows 7 activators, Windows 7 activation toolkits, Windows 7 Loaders and etc are expected to be released by various hackers soon. However, Microsoft may decide to block and blacklist this leaked master OEM-SLP product key. If true, other OEM-SLP keys from actual machine shipped from OEM has to be retrieved.

Disable SMS Text Message Threading or Conversation Mode in Windows Mobile 6.1

Windows Mobile 6.1 has SMS (text message) threading feature, which commonly known as conversation thread mode made famous by Gmail. With SMS conversation threading enabled, the SMS will be grouped into a style similar to IM (instant messaging) chat, with sent SMS text messages appearing in both Sent Items and Inbox.

The SMS threading feature in enabled and turned on by default in all Windows Mobile 6.1 (WM6.1) powered Pocket PC Phone device such as HTC P3400 Gene and HTC Touch Diamond. Although conversation thread may be useful in clarity and easiness to read the related text messages in series, but not all users preferring the new format of reading the text messages.

To disable and turn off the SMS threading or the text messages conversation mode in Windows Mobile 6.1 device, simply install a Registry Editor (such as CoRegEditor or PHM Registry Editor, see also how to install PHM RegEdit in newer Windows Mobile system), and then navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\OEM\

Under the registry key, create a new DWORD value with value name as SMSInboxThreadingDisabled and set it value data to 1.

Alternatively, download and apply the following DisableSMSThreading.cab file (unpack from the ZIP archive) on the PPC Phone device to automatically install the required registry key. Note that the .CAB file also install the registry key to force enable the Sent SMS notification bubble.

Soft reset the Windows Mobile device to make the change (without text messages conversation threading) effective.

If you have, or going to purchase Windows Vista, don’t be too excited or exhilarating and too eager to show off to the world via Internet, as you might be unknowingly, unintentionally or accidentally “release”, expose or leak your Windows Vista product key (aka CD key or serial number) to the world. If you do so after you have activated Windows Vista, less harm is done as you may only encounter activation problem when you format the machine and reinstall Vista. If the Vista serial key is leaked and used by others before you do, then you will most likely need to go through the agony to deal with Microsoft’s WPA support to resolve the issue.

How to Disable and Uninstall Protexis Licensing Service (PSIService.exe)

If you have installed trial or paid licensed version of Corel software products, you probably may notice a third-party unannounced software application makes its way into your computer too. The program is PSIService.exe by Protexis, which installs a Protexis Licensing service or Protexis Licensing V2 service in Windows operating system.

PSIService is part of Protexis copy protection DRM (digital rights management) and license management software, which intends to protect a software or application from piracy and illegal copying. Thus PSI service is normally installed by another program, such as Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, Corel Paint Shop Pro XI (X1), Corel Paint Shop Pro X, that uses its service to gather licensing information to send home much like spyware, ensure copy protection and authenticate user that uses genuine version of the program.

To make matter worse, the ProtexisLicensing service may make PC boots up slower, and when disabled, will cause Corel Paint Shop Pro to stop working, in addition to warn you of running illegal copy of non-genuine software. Besides, PSIService.exe does not uninstall together with the application that installed it, when the application is uninstalled and removed.

In any case, whether you want to get rid of Protexis while keeping the application that dependent on it still working properly and able to run (contrary to popular belief, Protexis Licensing service is not required for program to run), or now need to clean the Protexis PSIService spyware manually due to non-removal by original application that installs it, the procedures to complete uninstall and remove Protexis is easy. In fact, the instructions to uninstall PSIservice is provided on Protexis website.
If you are certain that no applications using PSIService are still installed on your system, and this service is still running, you can remove it manually by following these instructions:

1. Remove the following registry entry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProtexisLicensing]
2. Reboot your computer.
3. Delete the following files:

%windir%\System32\PSIService.exe
%windir%\System32\PSIKey.exe

Of course, in order to keep applications such as Corel Photo Shop Pro continue running without error, the complete removal instructions cannot be followed. Use the following workaround instead:

1. Open Services (services.msc) in Control Panel’s Administrators Tools.
2. Locate ProtexisLicensing or Protexis Licensing service. If you are seeing Protexis Licensing V2 service, use the next guide. Stop the service and then set the Startup Type to Disabled.
3. Bowse to %SystemDrive%\Windows\System32 folder.
4. Copy original PSIKey.dll to program folder of application that relies on Protexis, e.g. %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI\.
5. Rename PsiClient.dll to PsiClient.bak, or simply delete it.
6. Rename PSIKey.dll to PsiClient.dll
7. Rename PSIService.exe to PSIService.bak, or simply delete it.

If the Protexis DRM softare installed on your system is of version 2, follow these steps instead:

1. Open Services (services.msc) in Control Panel’s Administrators Tools.
2. Locate Protexis Licensing V2 service. Stop the service and then set the Startup Type to Disabled.
3. Bowse to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\License Service folder.
4. Copy original PSIKey_2.dll to program folder of application that relies on Protexis, e.g. %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2\.
5. Rename PsiClient.dll to PsiClient.bak, or simply delete it.
6. Rename PSIKey_2.dll to PsiClient.dll
7. Rename PSIService_2.exe to PSIService_2.bak, or simply delete it.

Now, Protexis Licensing Service is tamed and disabled properly so that PSIService no longer run in background, without affecting functionality of installed application.
